If 1 million fans demand Paranormal Activity, you'll see it

If 1 million fans demand \<i\>Paranormal Activity\<\/i\>, you\'ll see it
Paramount is letting you decide whether their scary indie film Paranormal Activity gets a nationwide release. They're using the Eventful Web site to create a voting system where anyone can submit a request (aka "a demand") to have the film shown in their area. Paramount says if they get 1 million demands, they'll "open nationwide"!

Over on Entertainment Weekly they're comparing this idea to the brilliant marketing campaign behind another low-budget horror film, The Blair Witch Project, but this one seems more like straight-up marketing to us. Nevertheless, it's kind of fun to make it seem like we have some control over what films we get to see in the theaters.

The vote is already over 600,000 as of this writing, so our guess is you'll get to see Paranormal Activity before Halloween if you want to.

I refuse to beg to see a movie. Even if it is a marketing stunt. Plus, it is not like they weren't going to do it anyway. To open nationwide means a whole lot of films ready to be shipped. So if it is coming before Halloween, they already have the films made and ready(most likely). They wouldn't advertise this promotion and then not be able to deliver on their promise because they didn't have enough copies ready in time.

By superfly at 2:39 AM ON 10/08/09

You'd think it already was nationwide with as many commercials playing nonstop on the scifi channel.

By archangel at 2:43 AM ON 10/08/09

All the syfy channel and this column is anymore is a way for Movie companies to get advertisement. Look at Star Trek....every day they released new images and new clips...I love Star Trek but by the time the movie came out, I was soooo sick of hearing about it, not to mention I had already seen most of the good parts of the movie. A lot of the Sci-Fi movies are good these days, but they are no where near what this site makes them out to be. This site is certainly not un-biased. They will talk up any movie as long as the money is good. What ever happened to integrity in the journalism field?

this movie looks killer...so want to see....it needs to come to idaho though...we never have that good of movies here...or that look that scare.....hopr to see it in theaters here in idaho soon....so demand it for idaho.....

By CHaze at 10:11 AM ON 10/08/09

I saw this movie and it is definitely worth the trip to the theater. I hope it goes nationwide.

By IronOre at 10:11 AM ON 10/08/09

Archangel there doesn't seem to realize that SyFy has to pay the bills somehow. They're paying at least a couple people to find stories that interest the average sci-fi fan and post them on this blog. To do this, they have to generate revenue, and the classic business model for media is to do this via advertisements. I wonder what Archangel's response would be if SyFy made this blog a site you had to pay to access.

As for Paranormal Activity, I will not be "demanding" it as I find most horror movies less than entertaining.

By archangel at 10:27 AM ON 10/08/09

There is a difference between paying the bills and being a mouth piece for whom ever will give you a few bucks.

By cogadh at 10:34 AM ON 10/08/09

And that difference would be...?

You still seem to be missing the whole point of advertising and selling advertising space/time. SyFy is, by nature of its status as a commercial media outlet, the "mouthpiece" for everyone who gives them a "few bucks".

By divephotog at 10:43 AM ON 10/08/09

I can find something else better to throw my money away on...

How rediculous... Like 1M attendees is gonna make it worth the release costs? Not even....Especially considering, like any event, theattendees are only 50% of the RSVP's ... :D - KH

LOL You people who are touting your virtues against the evils of 'corporate journalism' make me laugh. You're a bunch of ignorant fools who have been taken advantage of by the media time and time again and you never knew it before.

Now, because you think you have a valid complaint, you're standing up for yourselves.

In six months, you'll fall for some other ploy that is smarter than you are.

Bottom line: if a news source opens your eyes to something, go and research it for yourself. Treat any reports you read or see as a gateway to educating yourself about the product in question.

But stop being toolboxes. Jesus Christ on a crutch.

And as for you people saying 'I won't beg to see a movie'....kill yourselves. If you think the movie's worth seeing, why not just go take the ten seconds to fill out their request form?

Because you have some principles to adhere to? What a joke. You aren't saving anybody from anything and you aren't propping the corrupt morals of a decaying society up on your shoulders like Atlas lugging the planet around.

You people are sad and pathetic.

Thanks for posting information, SyFy. You give me newsbits that I can use, in conjunction with Google, to learn more about something if I find it interesting and that's all that matters.

By Eldon at 11:03 AM ON 10/08/09

I'll pass too, thanks.

By Marty B. at 11:41 AM ON 10/08/09

IronOre, your attempt to diss arcangel is confused.

You contend the _postings_ on ScifiWire are paid advertising. Arcangel's complaint is that the bulk of SciFiWire's "coverage" of science fiction tend to be regurgitation of press releases, with an occasional clipping from the trades. SciFiWire isn't "paid" for that coverage aside from "access" to people, pics, footage, and set visits.

The revenue comes from the actual advertisements, which are pretty easily recognized as such.

By archangel at 11:41 AM ON 10/08/09

Cogadh....the difference would be that Journalists are supposed to be un-biased. Sure, take the money to write a fair and honest review....not to just spew forth what ever tag line they want you to. When all of America is saying this movie is bad, or that movie lacks any real substance...and then you have this site saying..."It's the best thing ever...go see it." Kind of stupid really.

Taiso....your comment was nothing but "touting your virtues" and maybe you should look into the "killing yourself". Karma is a b!#$H!

By Sheep Farm at 11:52 AM ON 10/08/09

Nah, I want to watch Doctor Who instead.

By green11420 at 12:13 PM ON 10/08/09

I don't want to see it. I value my sleepy time. I can't lose it.

By Daniel at 12:30 PM ON 10/08/09

To Paramount- I really don't like being manipulated like this...

By IronOre at 1:55 PM ON 10/08/09

Marty B.: I wasn't attempting to "diss" anyone. I was just explaining my point of view on his contention that this blog was biased and just used as an advertising platform. In my response, I in essence agreed with archangel, in that this website does seem to promote certain movies, but I contended that this isn't necessarily bad.

In response to your post, I really do wonder if some of these posts aren't "encouraged" outside of just allowing access. Again, I don't think it's all that bad if they are, it just amounts to product placement in a TV show or movie (e.g. Subway in Chuck) and it allows for the SyFy staff working here to post interesting articles and commentary that we wouldn't get otherwise.

Why am I thinking 'Snakes on a Plane'?

By PBWeng at 3:23 PM ON 10/08/09

If 1 Million people send me $10, I promise I will accept it.

Thank you, Paramount, for giving me the opportunity to demand the opportunity to pay you. And thanks for filling my email inbox everyday with ads for doing so. I am so grateful I might rebuy all the Star Trek Movies for the 4th time in your latest packaging.

By Craig at 3:44 PM ON 10/08/09

Loving all the comments. No one has ever asked to buy a story on Sci Fi Wire though. If anyone ever does ask, we'll politely tell them no. We have no corporate or ad sales mandate, we just cover stories we find interesting or that we think you'll find interesting.

Can I demand for them not to FILM crap anymore and not shove said crap down my throat anymore?

That would be Priceless?

By gorehound696 at 5:41 PM ON 10/08/09

I would not touch this film if you payed me nor will I ever sit thru Blair Witch Krap.
I have a lot better things to do with my time.

By wraithfodder42 at 7:04 PM ON 10/08/09

Hey, I tried it. Think I did it right. Waste of time though as only 18 people in my town are interested in seeing it, butI was sorta surprised to see anybody else from where I live visiting SyFy!

By Captain Calvin Grant at 12:07 AM ON 10/09/09

They made this movie on a budget of $11,000.00!!! With word of mouth and internet buzz they got there interest of the horror genre and the curious!!
If they were not planning to release it in theaters. It would have been released straight to DVD. All a ploy and very well caculated for max effect for the halloween movie crowd.

By everet316 at 6:08 PM ON 10/09/09

saw this last night it was so boring.

By chris at 3:12 AM ON 10/10/09

I just think that they should do this more often. I mean, first get the public's opinion and then produce the movie. Give us a trailer to watch and then depending on hits and requests, you make it or don't. That would definitely get rid of the crap shows they make.

By BlueMein at 6:13 PM ON 10/10/09

Nervously i ate chicken, while i watched the trailer
