Joss Whedon reacts to Dollhouse delay

Joss Whedon reacts to \<i\>Dollhouse\<\/i\> delay
Joss Whedon (left) on the set of Dollhouse with star Eliza Dushku

Joss Whedon, creator of Fox's Dollhouse, has posted on the Whedonesque Web site about the network's decision to pull the show from its November schedule, and as you might expect, he's philosophical and good-humored about it:

"Howzabout that schedule? Well, I'm not as depressed as everyone else. We weren't about to rock sweeps anyway, and though there's a chilly November, December is CRAZY. It's like an Advent calendar of episodes! We get November to try to spread the word (which I'll be leaning on Fox to do, though it's hard to imagine them doing as good a job as the WhyIWatch guy) and then December is pure gluttony. Plus the episodes line up extremely well in these pairs, and we'll have an absurdly appropriate lead-in. Back to breaking Tim's [Minear] episode.

Keep the faith, peeps. I'll bring you news (and hopefully a little humor, I mean would it kill me to punch these up a little?) when I can. -j joss | October 22, 18:11 CET"]

Look for a rockin' new episode on Friday, about which we'll have a full review in the a.m.

This is fraked up.

By TheGigaShadow at 7:56 PM ON 10/22/09

Note to Joss:

First Firefly, now this. Never work with Fox again.

By Whedon Hater at 7:58 PM ON 10/22/09

Haha suck it Whedon! You over hyped talentless hack.

By ben_b55 at 8:15 PM ON 10/22/09

Huh. Whedon Hater, you wouldn't happen to be one of the bitter TSCC fans who blames Dollhouse for the show's cancellation would you...? I'll admit I'm a TSCC fan, but thankfully I am sane. We Dollhouse fans need to do what Joss said, get out there over the next month and generate interest in the show.

Everyone does need to visit http://www.whyiwatch.com/ as they truly are doing a far better job at promoting the show than Fox (although that really isn't hard to do).

By Pixel at 8:15 PM ON 10/22/09

As you can imagine, I'm less than delighted, as it puts yet another taint on a show that is already struggling, and gives the detractors another reason to badmouth it. If Fox get their act together and seriously promote the new eps, maybe rerun those already shown, it could give it a boost, but if they don't, the show is dead in the water.

Wonder how this will affect the UK Sci Fi broadcasts - are we gonna keep running, and get ahead of stateside? Because that'll put a crimp in Fox's plans, if folk can download them from the Net before US broadcast.

Numfar! Do the dance of network incompetence!

By whedon_lover at 8:28 PM ON 10/22/09

Whedon Hater: you clearly lack taste..

ben_b55: why would he/she necessarily be a TSCC fan? Could just be that he/she doesn´t like Dollhouse..

I love Whedon but Dollhouse hasn´t been a very good show so far. Decent at best. TSCC on the other hand was awesome and I don´t care what anyone says, of course they chose between DH and TSCC. That said, it wasn´t much of a choice financially. But TSCC is much better.

TheGigaShadow: The problem is, Fox is probably the only network that´ll give Whedons kind of shows a chance in the first place..

By daget at 8:34 PM ON 10/22/09

I do not think Tscc was awesome, it was ok.

Lucky for them they had beautiful women in it like Heady, Jacobsen, Leven, and Shirley manson.

and Galu has a small, but INSANE fan base.

By TVDIVA at 9:23 PM ON 10/22/09

My daddy always said if a mule kicks you once, that's his fault. But if he kicks you twice that is your own darn fault.

Mr. Whedon, you have been kicked by a prime grade a jackass named Fox.

By Daumier at 9:39 PM ON 10/22/09

I love Dollhouse, but the kind of naive optimism he's displaying just gives me a worse feeling about this. I have a hard time believing that Whedon's attempted front of confidence is really as sincere as he's trying to make it out to be.

By ben_b55 at 9:52 PM ON 10/22/09

Well whedon_lover to answer your question I have found that for the most part the people who say they hate Joss Whedon are the TSCC fans who feel that Dollhouse being renewed either directly effected the opportunity for TSCC to come back, or simply want everyone to suffer as much as themselves. Unfortunately it is those type of fans who do more damage than good for the cause of their show. If I had my way there would be several shows still on the air, including TSCC, Firefly, Jericho and Arrested Development. Even shows that I don't care for I don't bash because I know that those shows have strong fan bases as well.

It simply damages the reputation of a group as a whole to put down other shows, as well as the networks. Even if the executives are the biggest fans of the show in the universe, they cannot justify keeping a show around that isn't financially viable just because they like it.

Hopefully everyone can continue to be positive and do what they can to keep the show going, and even if it doesn't we can know that we gave it a good try, and we will always have Epitaph One if nothing else.

By ben_b55 at 9:56 PM ON 10/22/09

Daumier - Whedon has been in this business long enough to know that nothing good comes out of approaching things with a negative attitude. If he shows a lack of faith that the show could come back then what point is there in anyone else hoping that it can. He is not naive to the situation the show is in. Plus he realizes that if Dollhouse doesn't get brought back it simply means he can finish Dr. Horrible 2 sooner and perhaps finally get around to writing "A Shepherd's Tale."

By Alhazred at 10:09 PM ON 10/22/09

Whedon_Hater U Frakkin' SUCK!!!!!

By thehomegaman at 10:12 PM ON 10/22/09

Let's hear it for the Whedonites. Joss goes 0 for 2, and it's all the network's fault. What'll the excuse be when he bombs on another network?

By Dreamtime909 at 10:18 PM ON 10/22/09

Joss, you continue to be a class act. Keep bringin' the shows and I'll keep watching 'em no matter how long the studio numbskulls keep them on the air!

By ben_b55 at 10:51 PM ON 10/22/09

How is he 0 for 2 thehomegaman? Do you forget that he also made Buffy and Angel? Come on, get the facts straight. Plus Dollhouse still has a chance.

By Sammy at 11:12 PM ON 10/22/09

ben_b55 - Dollhouse has absolutely zero chance. Pretty much out there that FOX only brought this back for P.R. reasons. In other words they did feel like dealing with a very small but loud groupies.

By thehomegaman at 11:29 PM ON 10/22/09

0 for 2 on Fox. Had trouble picking up on it?

By ben_b55 at 11:31 PM ON 10/22/09

How many times does it have to be said that networks don't bring back shows unless they are financially viable. It isn't about PR. It's true those of the Whedoverse are a very passionate group, but even so it isn't Fox who gave the fans Serenity. It was Universal who saw the potential earnings that could be garnered from giving Whedon the backing to make the film, and it paid off very well for them.

It doesn't matter to a network if a show is a steaming pile of crap. If it continues to make them money it will continue to air.

By J at 12:42 AM ON 10/23/09

Sorry folks. I'm one of those people who can't wait for Dollhouse to die already.
Firefly was awesome. Buffy not so much. Same with Angel. Dollhouse is just painful to watch.
Please let it go easily into that goodnight, and get back to the drawing board Joss.
Secretly, I think Joss tossed this turkey at Fox to see how long it would be before they canceled it.

By Muldfeld at 1:11 AM ON 10/23/09

I was gonna maybe forget about this show, but mention of Tim Minear, who did fantastic work on "Angel" has me interested again. I'll be there in December, Mr. Whedon.

By Jon at 5:11 AM ON 10/23/09

thehomegaman - do you just sit around and wait for posts about whedon so that you can slate "rabid whedonites"? Was an ex girlfiend a big Firefly fan or something so now you're bitter? I think you need to get another hobby because this is getting old REALLY fast.

By Pimenta at 5:23 AM ON 10/23/09

I'm a Dollhouse and Whedon fan. But Dollhouse could be so much better.
We've heard references to other dollhouses. When will we get to take a look at them?
We've heard about some sort of big plan behind Dollhouse. Will that ever be developed?
I think Dollhouse suffers from the same problem most series do nowadays: there's a big idea, the end of season 1, 2 and 3 is immediatly planned, then they fill in the gapas with small episodes. This is a serious business. They need a season ending idea for EACH EPISODE!! Otherwise fans simply loose interest...

By Pixel at 5:36 AM ON 10/23/09

I think the main problem with Joss' shows is they appeal to an educated, literate audience, and the vast majority of the public are not so much in that vein. Just look at the above posts - defences of Dollhouse are well worded and composed, the detractors simply beat their chests and howls. If I can be elsewhere before we devolve to flinging faeces, that'll be just fine with me.

I'm not saying Dollhouse is his best work, but it certainly has a lot going for it, and (the first few, network friendly episodes aside) every single week has brought more information that has only made me more interested in the show.

It's sometimes difficult to gauge things over there in the States from this side of the Atlantic - in Britain all things Whedon are better received and very well regarded, and Summer Glau has more than "a small but insane fanbase." It is no coincidence that the world premiere of Serenity was in Britain, the first complete showing of Firefly - in order - was our Sci Fi channel, and we have hosted the first conventions for Firefly and Dollhouse.

Unfortunately, the voice of reason is usually drowned out by the baying of the crowd.

As with so many other shows, if two season is all we get, we'll accept it with gratitude. As Daniel Knauf said of Carnivale - the surprise isn't that it got cancelled after two years, the surprise was that it got made at all.

By gorehound696 at 8:08 AM ON 10/23/09

I may have loved TSCC but I do hate Dollhouse.I think it is one of the dumbest krapfests that ever stole my life for the 6 or 7 episodes I watched.
I will never go near this show again and would not care one bit if it was cancelled.
there are those among us who hate this show and not because of TSCC !!!!

By Chuck359 at 8:14 AM ON 10/23/09

I loved Buffy & I loved Angel. Both were great hits. Never saw Firefly becasue I was working evenings and when I finally did see the DVD set I wasnt impressed. Next we had Eliza's Tru Calling and now Dollhouse. I love seeing Eliza, she is a beautiful woman. But both of her shows have been lacking something.

Dnt remember if Tru Calling was Josh's show or not but if so he has had 2 hits and now 3 failures. I can see this being the final season of Doll House. The writing is already on the wall.

Besides as soon as Smallville ends I watch Stargate Universe & Sanctuary. Both are better shows then Dollhouse.

By lookn_4_stars at 9:14 AM ON 10/23/09

SGU better than Dollhouse? Three eps in and I'm still waiting for something, anything, to happen. So far all we've had is an ugly broken ship populated by an incredibly stupid crew flying around in the middle of nowhere taking to long to fix the damn thing. Whether you like it or not, at least Dollhouse has actual stories to follow. Fix the damn ship and give us some bad guys already. In the meantime, I'll keep watching DH and recording SGU.

By LoriAnn at 10:04 AM ON 10/23/09

Gorehound 696, is your life so meaningless that you respond to something as trivial and ephemeral as a TV show with HATE. There is nothing wrong with not liking a show, with a show not being one you want to watch, but to HATE is simply an exercise in 1) futility and 2) negativity. People who HATE are hateful. Is that what you want to be? It certainly seems like it.
Also, how can a TV show steal your time, much less your life? It is you who chose to watch however many episodes you watched. Although six or seven seems a bit excessive if you didn't care for the series, you could have stopped watching anytime or never have started to watch. The responsibility for your watching a show does not fall to the show or the producer or the network; it falls to you.
To call the show a "krapfest" is absurd. It is a fairly well made, if not expensively made, TV series. It may not be one you enjoy, but your enjoyment or lack thereof does not make the show crappy or brilliant either, for that matter. Neither you not I can affect the show. It is what it is, and someone saying it is great or that it is crap does not affect the show one bit; personal opinions do not affect what the opinion is about. They only affect the person who has the opinion, and if a person fills his or her opinions with HATE and CRAP, these negatives have to have a negative impact on the person. Do not let hatred and bitterness about a TV show, of all things, affect you. Recognize that you will like some things and not others, and other people will like some things that you do not; then live and let live.
If you have a comment on a series, be specific. If you think the writing is poorly done, show why in detail using well explained examples, and refrain from nebulous, whether positive or negative, adjectives that do not really back up your points.

By superfly at 10:05 AM ON 10/23/09

Whedon ruined Aliens 4 and through reputation with fox killed TSCC indirectly. It is logical to assign blame.

When Terminator isn't competing with Dollhouse, yet dollhouse's ratings are even worse, what does that say about which was the better show?

By Crosis101 at 5:48 PM ON 10/23/09

Look, I tried to give Dollhouse a Shot. As for people who hate being haters, as in like a predilection to hate, or just capable of it? we are all capable of hate it is in our makeup as human beings, unless you would like to say you are not human, which is fine with me.

As for TSCC vs. Dollhouse. They were different shows aimed at different people. As a long time Terminator Fan, you know the guy with the toys, and the Dark horse Comics, and seeing them in the theater and what not I found TSCC to have continuity lock out so badly, that I would miss and episode, and be lost. Not confused as to what was going on, not wondering what city we were in but confused as to the prime motivators for the major characters. That is a serious flaw in storytelling. And yeah I am a Babylon 5 fan, and a fan of several other shows like LOST and Fringe that are not pick up and go shows, but even so...they don;t have continuity lockout like TSCC did.

As for Dollhouse, it just isn't any good. I mean I watched the fiorst episode and said "OK Echo's imprinted with the memory of being raped by the killer" ok in the first 5 minutes. I spent the remaining minutes of the show in agony, cause I had already gotten the joke.

I bailed on the show, and I want to like it. I watched the premiere of Dollhouse for this season... and wanted to like it, I want to like it. I just can't bring myself to care. I don;t give a poop about Echo or anyone else. I mean sure it was fun to watch Apollo and Helo beat the crap outta each other, but I am supposed to believe what? Echo is imprinted, and within 15 minutes is married to an arms deal/mobster type guy with enough trust that she can do whatever she wants? I don;t believe it. Who out there believes that's the way it works. Or am I supposed to believe that Echo is just so hot he falls for her...none of his hentchmen think it's a set up, no one wonders where she comes from? I mean the guy is loaded. He has hot and cold running women, people who look like Eliza Dusku would be a dime a dozen to this guy.

My disbelief....it was not suspended. And this has nothing to do with hating Joss, and wanting to see him fail, though to be fair the email he sent to all the Browncoats personally blaming each and every one of us for failing him upon Serenity's opening weekend certainly makes me disinclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

in shot. Dollhouse isn;t very good, and I am not willing to wade through houres of poop to get to the good bits.

By Angelus at 2:56 AM ON 10/24/09

Ever since fox axed TSCC back in may over low quality projects, I can give a rats @$$ what they show on that network! I hope they crash and burn.

By JezuitX at 4:58 AM ON 10/24/09

Look I love Joss as much as the next guy and sure Dollhouse got the short end of the stick again, by being a Friday night show. That said Dollhouse is not that great.

I watch it looking for something that reminds me of Joss Whedon, and so far I've found a rather flat show (barring a few cool eps). I won't be sad to see Dollhouse go and that's saying something. Hell it took me seeing the Felicity Day bonus episode to get me to come back for season 2, and so far I feel disappointed.

By David at 11:11 PM ON 10/24/09

Fox is a steaming pile of shite.

Just when Dich pulls out all the stops and gets the show back on the track to EPIC WIN they pull the show. Scumbags.

I think TSCC was a better show, but I like Dollhouse too.

Fox Executive need to do the World a favor and commit Sudoku.

By ripper1 at 12:12 AM ON 10/27/09

joss whedon strikes me as a modern day gene roddenberry . hes had one great idea and hes trying to prove hes not a one trick pony . he really needs to return to what he does well before his reputation goes down the drain .

By sean at 5:34 AM ON 10/31/09

The bottom line is Dollhouse is just not that interesting. in my opinion, the concept was flawed from the start. It might make a good movie or mini-series, but if it doesn't resolve, it's all just BS. The only resolution/growth for a show about slavery is emancipation. It makes no sense for handlers to have sympathy for the dolls, yet continue to participate in their exploitation. It makes no sense for an FBI agent obsessed with freeing a doll to join in that exploitation. They keep trying to make the dolls' handlers/exploiters sympathetic, but it can't hold up.

Firefly was brilliant and fun, this is not. Every promo focuses on how amazingly hot Eliza Dushku is (and she absolutely is), but how many veiled-eyed, open-mouthed soft porn shots of her will it take to save this dead horse they keep beating?
