Remember the rumors floating around last week that George Lucas was getting ready to film a 3-D Star Wars trilogy? We told you it was too good to be true—and we were right. Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm head of fan relations, put the kibosh on those 3-D dreams in an interview at Star Wars Fan Days III.
Our friends at moviegeekfeed caught up with him there and got him to address the rumors. Check out the video below and you'll learn why, as Sansweet says, "You shouldn't believe what you read on the internet."

Why is Lucasfilm so hostile to the idea of doing more Star Wars? Are they embarrassed by the critical reaction to the prequel trilogy (certainly not by its financial take)? And even so, re-releasing the original trilogy in 3D would be the perfect excuse for a Blu-Ray release somewhere further down the road...and for Star Wars NOT to be released on Blu-Ray eventually is inconceivable to me. The movie really does look terrible in standard definition on an HDTV screen, at least compared to most newer movies that are in HD. If Star Wars's popularity is to pass on to the next generation—especially considering the resurgence of Star Trek—this seems like an essential step for Lucasfilm to take.

Well that's pretty much that, And I'm glad.

Why would any head of fan relations call anything that someone posted on a blog ignorant and stupid (regardless of whether it was or not)? He couldn't find any other way of shooting down that rumor? That wording kind of goes contrary to his job description, don't you think?

Ignorant and stupid seems a bit harsh. Shame, Thrawn's trilogy in 3-D would have been awesome.

I'm surprised this lame rumour got as much attention as it did because it was so obviously a load of crap. Sansweet was right to call it stupid, and makes a clear distinction between news and mere rumours started by internet geeks. I'm surprised that some sites (including this one) even bothered to report such a lame rumour, even if they were skeptical about it themselves. Maybe it due to there not being enough Star Wars-related news at the moment.
Lucas himself has said there will be no more Star Wars films and that SW will now move to television, although he has also said that he plans to reissue the existing films in 3D. I would imagine he doesn't want to do more films because he doesn't want to run Star Wars into the ground. All six of the Star Wars films were huge moneymakers (unlike the Star Trek franchise which was moderately successful as a whole, but has had its share of flops) and the last SW film was well received by critics and audiences. Better to end on a high. There is no reason to believe there won't be Blu-ray editions of the Star Wars films in due course.

Pretty hard to say Star Trek was marginally successful with 5 live action shows, 1 animated show, 11 movies, started the sci fi convention, started the cult show, started the letter writing compaign for said cult shows, introduced the world to cell phones, etc., has thousands of books and comics, and 43 years of history behind it.....yeah sounds not too successful to me

Just remember, after Lucas made Jedi he said that was it there would be no more films. When rumors would come out he would say they were untrue than low and behold years later he was filming Episode One. I doubt there will be any movies anytime soon, but if the live action TV series ends up creating enough buzz you can bet more movies will follow eventually.

Lucas said he planned to modify the movies into 3-D not make anymore like he's been doing for years with the original trilody which has been rereleased at least 3 different times because they are different versions of the same movie.
Why is this so difficult to understand for some people. I swear the most logical easy answer to any question can be sitting right in front of them yet people still act stupid and ignore it.
Lucas said many years ago he won't do anymore star wars movies, but did say he planned to rerelease them in 3-D. This information isn't hard to find just look it up.
I don't understand the reason why this subject is still being looked into. Even if this rumor was going around only a moron would believe it.

just saw on imdb that he has listed Indian Jones 5 in preproduction. little off topic but another franchise to make money off of.

kickboxer - I was referring to the Star Trek FILM franchise. My bad.

As much as this fan has always wanted to see three more movies
after Return of the Jedi, Lucas has been adamant about not doing
anymore beyond ROTJ. SW has always been a story about how
your children can redeem you etc...as a massive allegory with
legendary proportions. If you take that from its creator, then the
six movies FULLY satisfy that basic premise. I still say there is
enough story left to do stories about Luke's Jedi development,
but it doesn't fit into Lucas' basic premise. Eventually, he will
run out of "time gaps" between the movies for anymore fill-in
material and then SW is dead...

The star wars Universe will not be fully realized until George Lucas passes away into the force. He has lost his creative edge, and Star Wars needs a new vision, someone with balls to pick up where he left off!

Good job Sci-Fi Wire.
Good job devoting a story to a baseless rumor, admitting as much, and then patting yourself on the back when it turned out to not be true.
Somebody's eyeing a Pulitzer.
By thunderstud at 1:01 AM ON 10/28/09
I agree with hulk-lite. Where do you get off Sci-Fi Wire? How *dare* you report rumors? Rest assured, the rest of the internet will hear of your sheer insolence! You have made your LAST MISTAKE! ARGHH!!!
By Iso at 1:17 AM ON 10/28/09
Okay, lets not kill the joke.
By hulk-lite at 4:45 AM ON 10/28/09
See Sci-Fi Wire? You're tripping up.
One minute you're reporting on ridiculous fanboy speculation, the next minute you've got a "thunderstud" knocking your door down and looking for answers.
This is why you've got keep it real, man. Internets is serious bizness.

Personally, i would love to see a trilogy of films at the start of the jedi-sith confrontation. How did this all start and why..... nothing to do with any of characters of Episodes 1-6
By WR at 8:12 AM ON 10/28/09
No one involved with the prequel trilogy should ever refer to anyone else as "ignorant and stupid"... ever... again.

ROFL!! Love it.

The big question for us all is WHEN this supposed live-action TV show will be filmed. I heard that several actors have been cast already, and that all the scripts are completed. So... what is stopping them???
