Zombieland proved that the dead do rise: It is one of the few zombie movies and horror comedies to break out in its opening weekend, topping the box office. The movie, starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, took in an estimated $25 million during the Oct. 2 weekend, pushing Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs out of the top slot.
Here's BoxOfficeMojo's take:
In the realm of zombie movies, Zombieland had the second highest-grossing start on record behind the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, more importantly, it was the first horror comedy in recent memory to find significant theatrical success. The only horror comedies to claim greater initial attendance in the past two decades were the Scary Movie pictures, but they primarily appealed as spoofs. Failure is the norm, with movies like Jennifer's Body and Snakes on a Plane among the corpses.
What about the best horror comedy/zombie movie of all time, Shaun of the Dead?
Despite its cult status as the horror comedy to beat, it actually took in a measly $13.5 million in North America and a total of just $30 million worldwide.

Shaun of the dead had a very limited theater run in the states. Me and the wife had to look around to find it playing anywhere. I think it really took off on DVD when more people saw it.
Glad to here Zombie Land is doing well, I here its great but have not got a chance to see it yet.

I don't really care for horror movies or the mostly ridiculous "horror comedies", but If you haven't seen it yet you should. I went because a friend paid for my ticket, and it may be the best movie of the year so far.
It perfectly mixes jump out of your seat scares and edge of your seat action with belly laugh comedy.

I agree with ETo. It was a great film that had a lot of great comedy and enough scares to keep it from being cheesy. The opening credits were done exceptionally well and I could watch them over and over.
I’m glad to see that it already made more then it’s production cost. Here is hoping that we get to see more of this kind of stuff.

Well Went with My Teanage Son and HE said it was the best comedy Since Space Balls! I have seen a few More Like Army of Darkness, Which I will Say this is either Equal or better than it. But it is a SAD Day I have to go 17 years to find a GOOD movie in this vein. Shawn wasnt bad but it was no American wearwolf in London. But there again Was about 11 years before someone got it right!

Sure comedy horror movies are ok. Just don't turn a horror movie into a comedy.

LOVED Zombieland! It did not disappoint at all. Great zombie movie AND a great comedy.
The actors were excellent, but it seemed casting said, "We can't get Michael Cera, but there's Jesse Eisenberg, and we can't get Mila Kunis, but there's Emma Stone." To steal a line from David Spade: Michael and Mila called and they want their DNA back.

Why is it that when a movie makes money it is considered a great movie. And if a movie doesn't make much money it is considered to be not as good? What ever happen to substance? I'm not saying anything about this film, which I shamefully have yet to see, rather film critics in general.
Some people wouldn't know a great movie if it shambled up to them and bit into their flesh.
PS. I can't wait to see this movie. :)
