Oh no! The end is (kinda, sorta) near for Sookie Stackhouse
If you like the books from A Southern Vampire Mystery -- which HBO turned into the fang-banging show True Blood -- then make sure you enjoy the next four, because they may be the last ones Charlaine Harris writes. Harris was out and about promoting her short-story compilation A Touch of Dead, featuring stories about Southern Vampire Mystery heroine Sookie Stackhouse, when she revealed that the end is sorta kinda nearish.
"I've signed a contract to write three more after the one that's coming out in May, and they may be the last three," Harris told CNN. "Probably by then I will have lived with Sookie long enough."

Harris said she doesn't want to keep the books going if Sookie's stories start feeling played out. "I hope I have enough sense to walk away before that happens."

The series stands at eight novels now and will finish with 12 if Harris really does give Sookie a rest when she finishes out her contract. That's a pretty good run for any series, although there will probably never be enough for Sookie fans.

This is not a terrible idea. The last novel, Dead and Gone, was not asgood as the previous books. Sometimes the best thing an author can do is bring their creation to an end.

I know that I may not have read the books but going by the series on fx I dont,t think you could have more than 2 or 3 series based on the small area were the show has been based and the limited principal actors I liked the first series but for the show to be successful the next series will have to be much better

I agree with Jimmy.

Peter David did the same thing with Star Trek: New Frontier. He was contracted to do 12 books, but ended up doing 13. Since then there has not been another New Frontier novel, and there won't be without David's blessing since he co-created the book series.

I have mixed feelings about it, but it does have to come to an end sooner or later. Hopefully it will have a "good" ending compared to other book series with horrible endings.

charlaine is a PROLIFIC author. Sookie of the Southern Vampire series is far from her only series

she has Lily Bard, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries AND the Harper Connolley series which I LOVE!

and Alan Ball has PLENTY to work with to continue TrueBlood for a good 6 seasons should they so choose

please keep writing about sookie too many questions left

Sookie's romance and professional troubles have barely begun as True Blood still has a ways to go if they keep borrowing from the novels.

I had to look it up, but Peter David has actually done NF 17 books so far. And that's not counting the crossover books he did with the Gateway and Double Helix mini-series.

As for Harris and the Sookie books, if she want to let the series end then more power to her.

I'm with Jimmy - I felt like the last book was a little lost. I still love the series and the TV show even more, but I don't want Sookie to turn into another Anita Blake where there is no plot other than who she's romantically involved with in this chapter.

I agree with many of the others: the last book was short, rushed, and mostly a retread of previous books. It honestly seemed like the end of the book was half as long as it should have been (based on her previous work); I assumed there was a time crunch. It was the only disappointing Stackhouse outing of the series.

all vampire material now-a-days are shadows of the vampires anne rice wrote. no one will ever write them better.

having said that.. true blood is pretty good. :)

I'm quite satisfied by the idea that the novels get wrapped up, although I'll be disappointed if they don't have a bang-up ending. I've seen too many things fizzle out or left hanging indefinitely not to appreciate a good wrap-up.

Yeah, I was guestimating at how many he had done. I lost track with all the books, comics, and crossovers. lol

Does anyone at Sci Fi Wire proofread or check for errors? I don't read every story, but it seems like the ones I do read run with obvious mistakes. The Southern Vampire Series (each book is a "mystery" story in the SV SERIES) has NINE novels in print so far (not counting "A Touch of Dead," which is a short story compilation). Four more novels would end the series at THIRTEEN.
What's the point in writing these pieces if you're not going to do minor research or check your facts?
