Psst! Wanna be in a horror movie? Talk to director Craig Singer
Perkins 14

Fancy yourself the next scream queen? Think you have what it takes to pitch a movie? You can submit your story ideas, artwork and, yes, even audition tapes for Singer's upcoming horror film, Fear 101.

He's done it before. His most recent film, Perkins 14, was one of the first fan-created feature films, and fan involvement is something Singer has always been passionate about. In an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire, he explained how the idea came about.

"We've been working on something called 'America's Movie' or 'The Horror Project' for many, many years now," Singer said. "The idea behind it was to give the fans the opportunity to come up with an original idea for a horror film. It was then professionally produced and then involved the fans in many facets, such as casting and even marketing, via the poster and things like that."

Singer added: "The fans were given an opportunity to share their ideas for pitching an original idea for a horror film that was then whittled down and voted on by the fans to a final list. They created trailers to pitch the ideas. Ultimately one was elected. ... There was a screen-test process for four of the actors. ... Four significant roles were given to the fans. They screen-tested in Los Angeles. They were flown to Romania to film. Even the poster design was fan-created and -selected." (By the way, you can check out the screen tests on massify.com.)

Singer said Fear 101 is going to "take fan involvement to the next level, in a way that's going to turn a lot of heads. It's going to be done on a much larger scale and with much deeper fan engagement. It's something my partner Chris Williams and I have been working on for many years. Hopefully we'll be announcing our production date shortly."

Why does he do it? Singer told me that he thinks that horror fans are some of the most loyal and voracious in filmdom. And he wanted to reach out to them. "As a young filmmaker, I never had the opportunity to go to film school. ... Had there been resources like this, I would certainly have taken advantage of that."

Head over to massify.com or Singer's company Web site, T180.com, to find out how. Want to check out the result from the last film? Perkins 14 airs this Saturday on Syfy at 3 p.m. PT/ET. You can also check out Singer's earlier film, Dark Ride, at 11 a.m.

Perkin's 14 was a real accomplishment. It's suspenseful and horrific, with great performances shepherded by Craig Singer's masterful hand. All around a fun movie that should not be missed! Easily the best of Horrorfest '08.

I friggin LOVED this movie - thought it was a sort of crime drama and then get taken on this wild ride of a kick ass Zombie adventure. Loved the lead guy also he seemed so beaten and real not like all the beautiful faces you usually see in movies - the daughter was really cool too. A PLUS!
