Really? ABC calls Eastwick a "quiet success"

Really? ABC calls \<i\>Eastwick\<\/i\> a "quiet success"
Out of the blue we came across a note over on the Hollywood gossip blog Deadline.com that the ABC series Eastwick has been successful for ABC, which means it will probably not be one of this year's canceled shows. Now, we don't have anything against the series; we were just kind of shocked to hear that it was considered a success, since, honestly, we haven't heard anything at all about it. Here's what they're saying, though:

That the Warner Bros show even made it on the air is a minor miracle since it had been in TV development hell for eons and is based on that really old 1987 movie in the first place. But "Eastwick has been the quiet success story," a top ABC exec tells me. "Especially because we put very little marketing money against it."

What do you think? Is Eastwick a hidden gem that we've been somehow overlooking all this time?

the movie was better

By jgsugden at 2:34 PM ON 10/15/09

It is a better version of Charmed. The writing is hit and miss, but the story has somewhere to go. My wife really enjoys it, and I don't mind watching it with her.

By Hercules40 at 2:47 PM ON 10/15/09

It's been enjoyable. I watch it.

Hidden jem? Not yet. But it has potential. I like where it's going though.

By Tiffany at 2:47 PM ON 10/15/09

I'm loving "Eastwick"! Just adorable and very sexy. Can't wait to see where the show goes. :)

By MC0101010 at 2:47 PM ON 10/15/09

It's one of my guilty pleasures, I loved the original movie but the show has a lot of charm. I think it is still trying to find it's grove in terms of the comedy/drama balance but it is good entertainment.

By rush17 at 2:49 PM ON 10/15/09

What is with sci-fi wire being so snarky & attitudinal lately? I liked it better when it was more reporty and less douchey.

By tati at 2:50 PM ON 10/15/09

Didn't realize this was even on yet, although Ihad no plans to watch it.

Oh, and the book was way better :P

By scifire at 2:51 PM ON 10/15/09

I could barely get thru the premiere episode. I haven't watched it since!

By GeneD at 2:51 PM ON 10/15/09

I like this show. It's lighthearted, has an attractive cast, and has just enough supernatural elements to please this longtime fantasy fan. It reminds me as much of Pushing Daisies or Charmed as it does the original book and movie, and it's on a night with relatively few other genre shows: Spectacular Spider-Man (just back on the air), Leverage (on hiatus), and Human Target (coming at midseason).

By Goblinmoon at 2:55 PM ON 10/15/09

I was surprised as well. Surprisingly likable stars, solid plot so far (most suprising). To me its Charmed meets Desperate Housewives but its going to places that seem like good possibilities.

By scififan at 2:59 PM ON 10/15/09

I think it's quite good.

Not as good as the film, obv, but it does have a certain charm to it - particularly fond of the effort gone into individualistic characterisation for each of the female leads, rather than re-hashing any of the previous incarnations.

I'll keep watching, if only for the utter brilliance of casting a camp Paul Gross as Van Horne.

By Rueben at 3:00 PM ON 10/15/09

I'm enjoying it. Watched because of Paul Gross and got hooked on the zany story. It's a guilty pleasure show for sure with some very talented women in front and behind the camera. I hope ABC stands behind this statement and gives it a chance, esp. with the low ratings it's been getting.

By cylonphoenix at 3:03 PM ON 10/15/09

I dig it. It's light, adorable and fun.
And I'm agreeing with rush17...what's with the douchiness?

By penguintrax at 3:04 PM ON 10/15/09

I find the show to be a fun, guilty pleasure!

By neverwatch at 3:09 PM ON 10/15/09

Never watched it. Prob won't start.

Why is it douchey to say they haven't heard anything at all about it. Until this article, i completely forgot it was even on. they weren't trashing it, which would have been douchey

By Bruce at 3:20 PM ON 10/15/09

It's such a quiet success for ABC that "The Jay Leno Show" beat it in the ratings last night. If it was any more of a "quiet success" it would be an ABC Family program.

By misguided at 3:33 PM ON 10/15/09

Now Bruce's comment was douchey. lol.

It's a fun show and cheap to make, so it might make it. The girls are gorgeous!

By Pedantic1 at 3:34 PM ON 10/15/09

I will watch anything with Paul Gross and so far this has been enjoyable in a Charmed meets Gilmore Girls kinda' way... and Paul's role could have been written for his particular skills and charms.

By niafabo at 3:36 PM ON 10/15/09

Actually it's not half bad. Think Charmed meets Desperate Housewives. Definitely not a show I'd think many men would be into but quite fun to watch non the less. I'm glad to hear that it's doing well. I was kinda worried they'd cancel it because I never see it advertised.

By ecgordon at 3:41 PM ON 10/15/09

I concur with the others who say that the editors of Sci-Fi Wire are less like the reporters they should be and more like any geek with a blog that likes to diss on anything and everything. This is listed in the TV and News categories, but with the headline they used it should only have been in Opinion.

The show is enjoyable enough, and although I haven't watched last night's ep yet it is on my DVR, and I plan on continuing with it as long as ABC keeps it on the air.

By divephotog at 3:51 PM ON 10/15/09

Quiet Success = We took a chance on copying an old TV program that did well, while modifying it to fit a movie that did well also, and have found ourselves a limited success.

Their numbers are not as convincing, but see the loyal fans already here.... Until it becomes a retelling of every plot line Charmed ever did... - kh

By Ranshiza at 4:40 PM ON 10/15/09

I was suprised by Eastwick and have found myself really enjoying the show. I had half expected a rehashing of soemthing similiar to Charmed, but it is a great show that shares little in common with Charmed aside from three witches. I am glad to hear it is a success, as I was worrying it might get canceled on me.

By mykl at 4:47 PM ON 10/15/09

I honestly find it enjoyable but they need to lose all the quirky “Desperate Housewives” like dialogue and make their own quirky dialogue. I think it is setting itself up for a really nice story arch and hope it sticks around cause bottom line is it is really an enjoyable fun show and the ladies are not bad on the eyes either.

By Lt. Cmdr. Radner at 4:51 PM ON 10/15/09

Lots of potential and an enjoyable new show. Lots of room to grow and I eagarly look forward to seeing where this story goes.

By DJ Jarak at 5:02 PM ON 10/15/09

I thought it would suck, but I watched the pilot and was immediately hooked. I watch it every week now.

By kryche at 5:16 PM ON 10/15/09

There are certainly a lot worse shows on the airwaves. It wouldn't make it into my top 20, but it did make it into my DVR scheduler.

By Claude at 5:20 PM ON 10/15/09

What's the status of the Dark Shadows movie with Johnny Depp? Any news on that or the new line of Kolchak audio dramas?

By JenniferH at 5:20 PM ON 10/15/09

I just wrote up a long review about this show after last night's episode. I just think it's utterly charming; with great characterization. I really adore it. So happy to here that ABC may not cancel after all. Yes!

By Sheena at 5:57 PM ON 10/15/09

I tune in each week almost exclusively to watch Paul Gross play a suave egotistical jackass. The rest of the show isn't the best thing ever, but it's pleasant enough.

By smegforbrain at 6:47 PM ON 10/15/09

"we were just kind of shocked to hear that it was considered a success, since, honestly, we haven't heard anything at all about it."

That's because you're too busy writing bs articles about nothing, rather than doing any actual reporting.

So, I don't finding it shocking that you don't know anything about this show.

But don't forget to pat yourselves on the back the next time you get good ratings!

By seeker5528 at 8:07 PM ON 10/15/09

I like Eastwick, I think it has a good mix of quirkiness, mystery, comedy, and drama. Not as high on my list as Castle, SGU, and some other shows, but solidly on my 'want to see every week' list.

Later, Seeker

By me at 9:46 PM ON 10/15/09

I like it, but then again I like the actresses Jaime Ray Newman, and Lydsey Price.

By mangalee at 9:49 PM ON 10/15/09

Never any real interest to see watch this show. But I hope it gets canceled, so Jaime Ray Newman can come back and reprise her role on Eureka. :)

By c from illinois at 10:14 PM ON 10/15/09

Gross does a good job at playing Jack Nicholson. Supposedly, they are gonna tie it to the movie, and they would like another member of the cast to join the show. Veronica Cartwright was in in the movie, after all, ans she is supposed to be one of the original Witches, along with Cybil Shepard.

By he he haw at 12:32 AM ON 10/16/09

It is more of a sucess than this snarky news-lite site.

By Tarc at 2:24 AM ON 10/16/09

And I'll add my five-hundredth 'me too' to the pile that wants the writers here to be less 'douch-ey'. Eastwick is in the Charmed/Desperate Housewives vein, has a charismatic cast, likable characters, and plenty of potential - both for improvement and in plot expansion. The writing has been a little patchy, but that's to be expected for both an adaption and a show so early in it's run. It's entertaining, but not must see - so far. I'm guessing that it will get a lot more interesting, just like The Vampire Diaries did last week and tonight.

By oneeye at 6:40 AM ON 10/16/09

Boring so far unfortunately ..

By Meezer at 9:28 AM ON 10/16/09

Great show. Unfortunately the title probably turned people off from the beginning. I myself wondered why they were making this. But the show has legs (pun intended). Good writing and moves along quickly.
Also agree with syfy wire getting a little to opinionated lately. Just give us the info and we'll take it from there.

By Nid at 9:33 AM ON 10/16/09

Proving once again that bitches like witches!

By K'Rik at 9:41 AM ON 10/16/09

The one episode I watched was not that bad. I am interested in seeing more.

By jedimom at 12:29 PM ON 10/16/09

I just started watching it out of curiosity and am enjoying it

nothing else on against it, the only ABC show I watch in fact. DVR unless I am not busy, then I watch it live

the kewt Johnny Depp looking dude is no harm to the series heh

and frankly it is nice to see a slightly older cough cough woman in a sexy role on network TV!! hope she comes back for more X Men too!

By SPotter at 12:33 PM ON 10/16/09

So, the kill the most excellent show "Defying Gravity" with out giving it a chance, but they keep this moronic show because it's a "quiet success"?? I am SO done with ABC.

By ProgGrrl at 1:50 PM ON 10/16/09

I've been watching since ep 101. It's relatively well-written, funny, and the cast is charming. It's a nice show for women. Adult women who like charming, soapy fantasy fare. Not a ton of overlap with the scifiwire crowd, I would guess.

I'm sure their lead in show (the hit Cougar Town) isn't hurting the ratings either...

By Cranky at 5:38 PM ON 10/16/09

I Like the show. I'm surprised by the number of positive comments when usually you get just the haters and cynics who grouse about anything other than BSG.
Loved the one comment that he hadn't watched it and wouldn't watch it but thought the book was better!?

By rush17 at 6:47 PM ON 10/16/09

neverwatch said: "Why is it douchey to say they haven't heard anything at all about it. Until this article, i completely forgot it was even on."

Well, that's kind of the point of the network spin calling it a quiet success, right? To me that's why the article was douchey. It starts asking "Really? ABC calls Eastwick a quiet success" and then goes on to say, "that's surprising because we haven't heard of it..." well, uhm... DUH! The item they're reporting on includes a quote that reads: "Eastwick has been the quiet success story," a top ABC exec tells me. "Especially because we put very little marketing money against it."

The fact that it's performing acceptably for ABC despite no one hearing of it is the whole point! So it's douchey to take the opinion that ABC is somehow off its rocker to suggest the show is doing well when "we've never heard of it" or whatever.

By KLD at 11:15 PM ON 10/16/09

I really enjoy the show. I think it's still finding its groove, but it has a lot of potential.

By MUSC at 10:15 AM ON 10/17/09

I think it's great to have a reason to turn off the TV once a week. Thanks, Eastwick!

By Allison&Jack at 9:23 PM ON 10/17/09

@So, the kill the most excellent show "Defying Gravity" with out giving it a chance, but they keep this moronic show because it's a "quiet success"?? I am SO done with ABC.

They killed 3 episodes. The show was done after the 13th episode anyway, that's all the original production company and channel in Canada made. Don't try to fool yourself into believing Defying Gravity ever stood a chance of having more than a 13 episode run.

Difference between Eastwick and Defying Gravity? Eastwick is an ABC original designed to last for at least 5 years. Defying Gravity was an acquired property bought to be burned off during the summer off season.

By badhorse at 4:53 PM ON 10/18/09

I love this show. I loved the movie and the book and I think they have a quality addition to the franchise. I'll watch it as long as they make it.

By skyhawk at 9:42 PM ON 10/18/09

Love the show. As long as Lindsey Price stays on, I'm so there.

By mechele_m at 9:32 PM ON 10/21/09

love it! very entertaining...that being said, it probably won't make it because everytime i start watching a new show ,it gets canceled!! you want to talk about frustrating. let's cross our fingers and hope for the best..

By Kerrsutherland at 6:20 PM ON 10/22/09

"A better version of Charmed!" What are you high? Charmed was so much better than this knock-off on so many levels.

By BasketballMom at 6:23 PM ON 10/23/09

I LOVE this show. It's a refreshing concept compared to all the medical & crime shows out there, mesmerizing cast who are great to look at and can actually act and I enjoy the story line. I would be VERY disappointed if it was canceled and want to see how the plot plays out. You kind of wonder...how long can they go on without revealing all the secrets and the show losing that mystery element...but look at LOST. I also just love the setting, such a quant picturesque seaside town where everyone knows each other.

By PoisonKissez at 6:52 PM ON 10/25/09

I look forward to the latest Eastwick every week. I have very few television " passions " and this is one of them. It will definitely suck if they turn around and cancel this. I am so sick of the hospital and crime dramas that have been monopolizing the airwaves for so long. It's about time they start getting GOOD shows on here. I am also proud to say that I am an Eastwick fan and will keep my fingers crossed in hopes that the show continues.

By Kloo at 7:49 AM ON 10/26/09

I CANNOT BELIEVE KYLE XY HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR...FOR...THIS!!!!!!!! Oh, come on, Matt Dallas could do so much better than a Disney-like show! -.-

A success...yeah, right. Considering Abc's latest smart mooves...funny, really.

By Seth at 1:54 AM ON 10/28/09

If I may be so bold ... I am one of those men that has gotten into the show. I agree that the writing it hit or miss, but the show has some of the best one-liners I have heard. Paul Gross is a personal favourite of mine from his days on "Due South", and I think he plays the part on Eastwick excellently. "Eastwick" is light-hearted and fun, which makes me fear for its future at the hands of ABC. (Anyone remember what ABC did to "Boston Legal"?)

Here's hoping "Eastwick" sticks around for awhile.

By VanHorneRules at 6:00 PM ON 10/29/09

ABC needs to take full advantage of the skill of the actors and there are so many directions that the plots could take it's not funny. Paul is fabulous as Darryl and all of the actresses are great. It's a great cast and I think that they've all gelled well together and will only get better. Last night proved that there is more going on here than meets the eye and I want to see more, more, more.

By PaulGrossforPM at 9:46 PM ON 10/29/09

Eastwick is quirky, sexy and my favorite indulgence of the week. It is smart TV and the cast and characters are fabulous. Paul Gross as Darryl is worth anyones time, trust me! Its just clever TV, better than the over-touted desperate housewives by far because of its creative edge! I am not surprised at all by its "quiet" success!

By elementalv at 8:36 PM ON 11/01/09

Paul Gross is worth the price of admission, and so is Jamie Ray Newman. Not too thrilled with the other two actresses, but the show is starting to improve, now that they're starting to focus on the darker aspects of what's going on.

By Nan at 9:08 PM ON 11/01/09

This is my favorite new show of the season! Paul Gross is wonderful, and it's starting to really get going now that the characters are more fleshed out.

By Kat at 11:11 PM ON 11/01/09

I love this show! It's better than desperate housewives was in it's hay day! It has witchcraft and mystery and fun characters! Really the best new show this season.

By Kif at 2:30 PM ON 11/02/09

I was always a fan of the movie. I mean, Jack Nicholson is simply fantastic. However, I simply love this show Eastwick. I'm a huge fan of Paul Gross, and I think he has really made the Character of Darryl his own.
The show has a witty kind of humor to it. It is also sexy and fun. This is by far my favorite new show! :)

By Lexi at 4:15 PM ON 11/05/09

Eastwick is an amazing show, with a growing audience, it needs time to capture its full potential. Everyone is losing ratings because people are moving to the internet to watch their shows for free or because they missed the time slot and catch up online! please everyone who likes Eastwick and does not want to see it cancelled-go to this link and sign the petition, you have to give them your email but they will not sell their email lists or send you any spam..they send you one confirmation email and you dont even have to open it, please sign to keep this show on the air http://www.petitiononline.com/saveeas1/petition.html

By jasmin at 11:52 PM ON 11/06/09

Please save eastwick it is a good program. Please keep it on ABC.

By Lori the lass at 7:42 PM ON 11/08/09

I love Eastwick. ABC has not advertised it and it is taking off like crazy. I have watched it from day one and look forward to it every week. Last week I got my daughter caught up and she is now hooked. I don't quit understand why this article starts out with REALLY? Of course really! We are fighting for this one and already have a petition out to save this show even though as this article state it will stay. People are so tired of reality shows, doctors shows except House, talk shows, game shows, We now have a few fun shows on Tv now like the vampire diaries, eastwick, ncis, smallville, house, medium and Sons of Anarchy. Give us some fanasty time here; life is hard enough to have so many serious show on. Give our minds some rest. I wish abc would of took Guilding Light and still fans are upset about that. Anyways yes Eastwick is a great series.
