Roland Emmerich still game for Stargate sequel film?

Roland Emmerich still game for \<i\>Stargate\<\/i\> sequel film?

Given the complex mythology built up around Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and now Stargate Universe, it's easy to forget that the whole thing started in 1994 with director Roland Emmerich's movie, starring Kurt Russell as Jack O'Neill and James Spader as Daniel Jackson.

In the years since, Devlin has told us that he still wants to produce the two sequels he and Emmerich always envisioned, and Emmerich told us over the weekend that he's also game, though that means overcoming some rights issues and his natural aversion to doing sequels.

"Whew, it's a tough one," Emmerich told us in an exclusive interview in Jackson Hole, Wyo. "I mean, I constantly keep talking about it with Dean, too. I mean, we also keep talking about an Independence Day sequel, but it's just, like, such a ... tough thing to do in these days."

In 2006, Devlin told us: "We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out. I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we're going to try to not tread on their stories."

"When we created the original Stargate, we always envisioned it as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control over [it]," Devlin added. "I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three."

Last Friday, Emmerich said: "It was probably good that we never did these sequels, because it forced us always to do something new. ... In general, I'm not a big fan of sequels. I'm just not a big fan of sequels. Because it's very rare that a sequel really works for me. Like, for instance, Aliens was a great sequel. But most of the time they're kind of a lesser version of the first one."

Another consideration: Russell is now 58 and Spader is a rotund 49 (as anyone who's seen him on Boston Legal can attest), and that may be a bit long in the tooth.

Not to say they couldn't recast, though, and it would be fascinating to see how Emmerich and Devlin's Stargate mythology would have diverged from the elaborate universe we've seen developed in the TV shows.

Any movie would never live up to SG1,SGA, or SGU.

They lost their chance at making more movies when they let SG1 do it better.

By PBMom at 2:16 PM ON 10/13/09

This sequel desire is as bad of an idea as this Battlestar movie they want to make that is different from what BSG was. SG-1/SGA/SGU is now the standard. So far, watching SGU has been like watching a feature film anyway.

By 3456 at 2:20 PM ON 10/13/09

As much as I want to say SG1/Atlantis is canon, we need to give credit where credit is due; Emmerich, Russell and Spader were first. I would DEFINITELY want to go see these new flicks as the first one pretty much blew me away when I first saw it in the theater...

By Chiper at 2:20 PM ON 10/13/09

Awful, awful idea. The characters that have been established over the course of the SG tv series' have diverged significantly from those in the original movies. Sure you could say the show exists in an alternate universe from that of the movies, but that doesn't change the fact that anyone who has watched the shows would be completely unable to accept the characters as who they claim to be.
The main audience of that sequel would want the film to be something it's not, and will hate it because of that. Sorry guys, but you lost control of that franchise a LONG time ago, let it go.

Now an Independence day sequel I would LOVE to see. The books set around that movie were all interesting.

By Slacey at 2:23 PM ON 10/13/09

RDA is Jack O'Neill... no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

By me at 2:28 PM ON 10/13/09

Astonishing. Absolutely astonishing. This explains so much. Hollywood people are absolute IDIOTS. To even think of trying to compete with FIFTEEN YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL Stargate stories. IDIOCY.

By Logan at 2:32 PM ON 10/13/09

Independence Day was supposed to be the second Stargate movie. It would have been the alien's response to the "attack" on them by Earth (destrying Ra's ship). Instead, SG-1 got made, and Emmerich retooled his script and we got Independence Day.

Ugh, thank you for creating the general idea, but 16 seasons of SG-1/A/U the mythology is pretty much established. There is NOTHING he could do that wouldn't step all over it.

By ladyhgiggle at 2:34 PM ON 10/13/09

I had loved Stargate and I was waiting for a sequel with the way it had ended. I was extremely glad for SG-1, which has become my favorite Sci-Fi of all time, but I would GLADLY welcome a sequel to the movie. Even with all the stories of SG-1 & Atlantis there is still a lot more that could be explored in the storyline. Besides the Goa'uld were such great bad guys!!

By ATK at 3:12 PM ON 10/13/09

I'm starting to think their isn't a movie that Ronald Emmerich hasn't thought up a sqeuel for.

By divineway at 3:16 PM ON 10/13/09

Really? There is only one Jack O'Neill for me now, and that is RDA.

By BatGal at 3:23 PM ON 10/13/09

RDA is Jack O'Neill. Two L's.

By jpl1976 at 3:29 PM ON 10/13/09

While I agree that the movie set the "tone" for SG-1 and its subsequent spinoffs, its a little too late to e thinking of a sequel to the movie at this point. Personally that ship has sailed. Dont get me wrong, without the original movie there would be no Sg-1/Atlantis/SGU or hell Sanctuary for that matter (because Amanda Tapping wouldnt have the pull that she does now).

By Pedro Henrique at 3:32 PM ON 10/13/09

the stargate original movie sucks!
my god, who would think to do such a thing?

By Felipe 058 at 3:32 PM ON 10/13/09

I am in full accordance with everyone else; there is one and ONLY one Jack O'Neill, and that is Richard Dean Anderson.

By hall442 at 3:46 PM ON 10/13/09

The original movie was no big thrills. it was a mediocre box office performer at best. When it came to the small screen, recast, it really found it's path and shined. Making sequels to the original movie, now, would be basically re-booting, in the Star trek fashion (major suckage, btw) or Battlestar Galactica reboot (soap opera with lasers - hideous). Hollywood, quit ruining good properties with your idiotic ideas.

By thinkwatchthink at 3:53 PM ON 10/13/09

I wonder if they could cover the same plot/themes they had in mind back then with new characters? Then no one's favorite actor toes would be stepped on.

By lambertamr at 4:04 PM ON 10/13/09

i can't imagine how they could do a sequal when sg1/atlantis has carried the story so well. But i'm not against them trying. if it sucks it sucks. and they will be ridiculed till my fingers are sore. but if they manage to pull it off, then they may become gods themselves.

By crazyokie at 4:30 PM ON 10/13/09

I don't want to take anything away from RDA, but I definitely enjoyed Kurt Russell's performance in the original. Here's hoping Roland sticks with his instincts - in this case a sequel is not a good idea. The original was fantastic, was original and not just a rehash of something done previously.

By creno at 4:39 PM ON 10/13/09

I'd love to see a sequel made just so I could watch the fanboys cry.

By scifi-ED at 5:17 PM ON 10/13/09

So wait. The day after tomorrow isn't the indepence day sequel?

2012 isn't completing the trilogy?

Oh wait, they're all the same movie, rebooted over and over agian, my fault. I thought they were sequels. (But don't get me wrong, I liked ID4.)

I guess he's out of destroying the world ideas, so now he has to go back to his old ideas.

By jose at 5:46 PM ON 10/13/09

Well I agree with the Idea od RDA being O'neill however, I would see a Sequel, I'm up for it simply because they (Devlin and Emmerich) made the original film and I'm quite sure they could work something out that would fit in the cannon Go for it! why the hell not! everyone is either remaking reimagining or rehashing old Ideas!

By Iso at 5:53 PM ON 10/13/09

Emmerich has an aversion to making sequels? He certainly doesn't mind making COPIES!

By thehomegaman at 6:48 PM ON 10/13/09

I remember reading a while back that Emmerich and Devlin's idea for a sequel involved tying mythological monsters like the yeti and such to Mayan pyramids and God knows what else. Frankly, I'm glad somebody with a lick of sense got the franchise to TV and saved it from that kind of idiocy.

By azsinz at 7:28 PM ON 10/13/09

They could do a sequel
SG1 did like 3 episodes with alternate realities
so they could do their own ideas with maybe a little acknowledgment of the tv canon

same thing they should do with remaking bsg
after all bsg ended with it being our earth and no knowing what happend to the cylons left over
alternative realities work well in comics im sure someone can make it work for these franchises

By Sheep Farm at 8:01 PM ON 10/13/09

They should make the sequels without keeping the TV series in mind. If they do it otherwise, everything could end up in a big mess. So, I say make the two sequels as if the TV series never existed, then let SyFy produce a TV movie that integrates the sequels in their universe, and give a an explanation for the fans. Can it be done? No, I don't it can be. But, I would rather mess up the TV series rather than the movie sequels (ouch). Okay, sure it can be done (fingers crossed).

By jlgrand at 8:11 PM ON 10/13/09

creno: "I'd love to see a sequel made just so I could watch the fanboys cry."

so mean are you. and soooo funny!

SGU has to play out. NOW they want to jump on the bandwagon. Vampires.

By paramore at 8:46 PM ON 10/13/09

oh so you sell your series let someone else have sucess with it then want it back? Too late. We waited for something and TV series was all we got. If they do a movie it needs to follow SG!,SGA & SGU as Cannon. SG! is known for Alternate Timelines & Alternate Universe as much as Star Trek so it can work out

By Azgoroth at 8:59 PM ON 10/13/09

They want to give it the Highlander treatment where the plot changes wildly between sequels and makes no sense at all.

By Simon Baylor at 9:25 PM ON 10/13/09

What would be the point ?

By TheGigaShadow at 9:37 PM ON 10/13/09

@creno

There's always one douche bag in the bunch. This time, it's clearly you.

By SighFyeGuy at 9:54 PM ON 10/13/09

HERE'S A GREAT IDEA FOR A SEQUEL!!! There are alternate universes right? So get Kurt Russell, James Spader, Djimon Hounsou, and some actress to play Carter, and have them meet their t.v. characters!! It would rock!!

By creno at 10:29 PM ON 10/13/09

@ jlgrand You mean like the Wraith? .

@ TheGigaShadow What? Crying fanboys are hilarious! "No Carter? No Teal'c? Canon violation! Waaaaaaaa!"
It'll be just like the new Star Trek only slightly less annoying.

By steve at 11:43 PM ON 10/13/09

Bring the sequel. I watched all the Stargate shows, but would like to see where Devlin and company originally wanted to take it.

By UmNo at 12:04 AM ON 10/14/09

Yeah, there are ALREADY two more movies, which build upon SG1's mythology. No thanks, Roland.

Unlessssss.... he wanted to do a PREQUEL to SG-1 and show what happened to Daniel and Jack between Stargate the movie and CotG(and maybe give Sam more backstory!). Shanks would have to grow his hair out again though. But he did a GOOD Spader, and the did an even better job of making Daniel hiw own.

By Guardian at 12:05 AM ON 10/14/09

I can tell you as someone involved with the series on a technical level--they are two entirely different animals. The series had GREAT character development, and we (as viewers) became heavily invested in them (think Dr. Frasier's death).
The film was a GREAT story about exploring the unknown, and we were left wanting so much more. Remember how incredible and powerful Ra's soldiers were? SG-1's, on the other hand, were clad in knit mail and dropped at the first bullet hit. (No one ever liked that, but couldn't/wouldn't admit it!)
My point is that the film showed a very different enemy, one that should be explored in a film #2 of the originally intended trilogy.
If you are thinking "Oh, B.S., the series was SO FAR Superior to the film, it's not funny!!!", then take a deep breath, relax, and watch the film again. (You know you have it, and probably the Director's cut--so go get it!) This time, forget about RDA (God love him) and the rest of the cast. Remember how the film made you feel when you watched it for the first time. Remember how the series Pilot made you feel when you watched IT for the first time! (Many felt betrayed--and wondered how McGuyver could possibly fill Kurt Russell's shoes!!!)
After you've watched it, get behind it. It will be good, trust me. After all, Roland's been thinking about it for years, and it will surely be worth the wait.
Just remember. It's not the series. It is separate--and you'll be just fine with it! :)

By vanny at 4:02 AM ON 10/14/09

Look - I absolutely loved the orginial movie - I went to see it 3 times at the cinema, as to me this idea of an Egyptian God being an alien was really awesome.. then the series came out and I was hooked further... to that end, I have loved all the series since then, and can't get my head around them doing movie sequels now. As much as I liked Russel and loved Spader, it is no longer them that i think of when thinking about the characters... just my thoughts...

By TimtheRipper at 8:01 AM ON 10/14/09

I will just repeat what has been stated already, For me and many others:

There is one and ONLY one Jack O'Neill, and that is Richard Dean Anderson.

Amen to that, SG-1 was better then the original movie.

By scifi fan at 9:04 AM ON 10/14/09

The idea of a big budget movie for the franchise is a great idea to get a greater exposure and does not need to be dismissed so quickly. A good example is the SG:U series, that had some terrible reviews by some of us that have followed the franchise from the beginning. I really was not (am not ) happy with the shaking cameras, sex and too dark for me plots, but it is doing reasonably well and even growing in the ratings. A story can be developed even if they use a different SG team other than SG1 or the Atlantis team. Maybe a mixture with some new characters but in a similar approach as SG1 or Atlantis. Also by the time a movie can be put together some of the characters that are on SG:U now on earth could be used. The new Star Trek movie proves there is room in the Stargate world to tell more stories. The original second and third movie ideas might have to be adapted to do some different characters but it is doable and I think successfully, even if a newer audience needed because there is no limit to a good imagination. I am older than most that post on this site (I think) but do understand new ideas are accepted and even embraced that my generation might not want to see happen, but it is still a fact of life. I truly loved the way SG1 and Atlantis were done but younger newer audiences can accept something different. My opinion is GO FOR IT!

By 3456 at 9:57 AM ON 10/14/09

This is all make believe non-sense. All for
entertainment and fun and NO this fanboy
ain't going to cry and pout if they make a
set of movies not related to SG1 and
Atlantis. I hate to say this, but the original
movie had some cooler aspects to it than
the series' did IMHO, but the series' built
out a magnificent fantasy world of story lines
and mythology. Again, there's no need
whatsoever to bridge the two together as
Emmerich could easily expand upon the
original concepts/story line of the original
movie without damaging or affecting the
TV series'. WOW, I can't believe I am
actually saying this, there was a time when
I would have gotten plain angry over some-
thing like this:)

By lookn_4_stars at 10:11 AM ON 10/14/09

Love to see the Goauld on the big screen again, if only to relieve the sour taste left by the Ori storyline which sucked bigtime. Merlin's weapon? We never got to see it used, we were just told it worked. How lame was that? And the conclusion to The Ark of Truth was just awful. There are still alot of Wraith left in Pegasus as well. They could do a movie for both sets of baddies. Go for it.

By gatemonkey at 12:10 PM ON 10/14/09

To be perfectly honest, a prequel would be in order here. Show the struggle of the Egyptian people as they overthrew Ra and his Jaffa army and show how they sealed the gate below the cover stones at Giza. I, for one, would LOVE to see that. This way it doesn't have to break SG1/SGA/SGU canon and it could be a very original story. Emmerich and Devlin, if you read this, there is your story! Take all the credit, just give me a great movie!

By sonza at 12:40 PM ON 10/14/09

the Stargate movie and the TV series' live on two separate universes anyway. (Jack's last name is spelled differently for one and all those other "minor" changes done in between the movie and Children of the Gods.)

so go ahead with the movie. any Stargate movie would be great for the franchise.

:)

By Guardian at 1:57 PM ON 10/14/09

@gatemonkey
I agree, that could be an epic story! But--even that story isn't untouched by the television series. Didn't SG-1 go back in time and help with the rebellion?
See: Season 8 EPS. 19 & 20 (Moebius Parts 1&2)

@lookn_4_stars
I would love to see the Goa'uld again too, but they weren't called that in the Stargate film. I don't believe the name of the alien species [of RA] was ever revealed, but probably was in the books (by Bill McCay, Dean & Roland), which continued after the film beginning in 1995. I read them all, but don't recall. Anyone have that info?
(The books were great, and had nothing in common with the TV series.)

The books can be found at Amazon by (advanced) searching for author Bill McCay & Stargate)

By Flux cheese at 2:50 PM ON 10/14/09

I really wanted to see these films a year or so ago when I first heard the news but now I'm conflicted.. would I go see them if they were made?.. HELL YES duh..

By joesocwork at 9:31 PM ON 10/14/09

I agree that the movie and the series(es) are completely different creatures. A more serious O'Neil(l) and geekier Daniel Jackson won't destroy my memories of RDA and Shanks in those roles. I'll be watching SG-1 DVD's forever! But since Emmerich and Devlin are the originators, I'd love to see what their vision was!

By Just Me at 11:29 AM ON 10/15/09

He already made a prequel, 10,000 BC, so why not a sequel?!

How is 10,000 BC a prequel you ask? The film is based on the idea that the Pyramids were built long before the Egyptians. There's a god/leader overseeing the Pyramid construction who some believe came from the stars. The prominence of the constellation Orion. The god/leader wearing finger coverings like Ra in Stargate. And one of the characters speaking in a voice very similar to Ra's in Stargate.

By Reptile fan at 8:03 PM ON 10/15/09

May I remind everyone of what it,(Emmerich) did to Godzilla. that aside he should not make this movie unless he keeps it in the same universe with the right actors meaning RDA etc.

By what? at 1:30 PM ON 10/16/09

If you REALLY wanted another Stargate sequel, help make the 3rd SG-1 movie. Shanks and Anderson have a great on-screen chemistry, and I'd love a good, strong, non-shippy script. Also, I take offense at the nasty comment about Spader's weight. That man has more talent and charm than 99% of Hollywood's pretty boys, as evidenced by his multiple Emmys. Go stand naked in front of a mirror and tell me how good YOU look!

By shaurissmile at 3:53 PM ON 10/16/09

I loved the Stargate movie, it's the best movie of all time as far as I'm concerned and it is the end all of Stargate for me. Stargate SG-1 was good, Atlantis was ok and Universe I could do without. I would give anything to see what Roland and Dean could come up with. From the movies they've both made since, I don't think there's any better team or set of individuals that write, produce and direct better for their genre. I love their movies, TV shows and will watch anything they make, no matter what!!!!!!!!

By marc9834 at 12:26 AM ON 10/17/09

Bring on the sequel every fan of SG1 will want to see it just for curiositys sake.SGU really isn't that good right now.I just don't care about the characters as much as I did with SG1 or SGA.But remember both shows improved with age.I don't see why SGU would be any different.

By silverhawk at 12:15 PM ON 10/18/09

I for was was very upset when sg-1 came out. Kurt Russell and James Spader were the originals. But I absolutly fell in love with the series and the characters. Lets remember how bad atlantis sucked in the begining. It also turned out great. The only reason i am even watching sgu still is the track record of the first 2 series. As far as movie sequel or prequel, I for one would love to watch. Go for it I love all things stargate, even the animated series.

By marc9834 at 10:46 PM ON 10/18/09

There's an animated series? I missed that.

By return to greatness at 8:50 AM ON 10/19/09

Hopefully the sequels would be better than the cheesy series

By Screenwriter72 at 11:45 AM ON 10/19/09

Instead of making sequels, either re-cast the parts for a feature film trilogy OR use the SG-1 cast minus the extra characters used in SG-1!!! This would make more sense to me...

". . .he should not make this movie unless he keeps it in the same universe with the right actors meaning RDA etc."

@Reptile fan
It's obvious how much you like the series, but you should keep in mind that the RIGHT actors for another Stargate movie is Russell and Spader, not actors from the series. The series has little (other than the Gate and Abydos) to do with the 1994 Film.

The hard truth is that almost all of the actors are [not too old to act, but] getting too old for young gen action movies.

I agree with Screenwriter72, Roland and Dean should start from the beginning, recast for a remake of the original Stargate film, and continue through the originally intended trilogy of films.

Who knows, there might even be a remake of a Stargate series not unlike ST: The Next Generation.
