Rumor control: New 3-D Star Wars film trilogy coming?

Rumor control: New 3-D \<i\>Star Wars\<\/i\> film trilogy coming?

Every now and then, someone tries to stir up a new rumor about a future trilogy of Star Wars films, and none of them ever turns out to be true, and we're going to go out on a limb here and say this one's also bogus.

Marketsaw is reporting that George Lucas is gearing up a 3-D trilogy:

I have been hearing rumblings ... extremely quiet at first, but now heating up significantly and from a trusted source—that George Lucas is preparing to unleash another STAR WARS trilogy upon us, this time in stereoscopic 3D. This is NOT the TV series, these are brand spankin' new 3D STAR WARS movies.

Yes, the pending 2D to 3D conversions of his six existing STAR WARS properties are still a go as 3D theaters are approaching 3000 (5000 is the number Lucas wants). No word on when this work will be completed. ...

Lucas will be producing and NOT directing these new episodes apparently! Could Steven Spielberg be tapped to direct a STAR WARS movie after all? Yes according to a trusted source of mine! Further, Francis Ford Coppola was mentioned too as a possible director for a future film!

We're going to say it flat out. This is SO not true. We don't believe it for a second. And we're willing to have egg on our faces if it does turn out to be true, but of course we're confident it's not true. Spielberg? Coppola? Really?

Here's Marketsaw's reasoning for why Lucas would trouble himself to climb off his mattress stuffed with $100 bills:

I could see Lucas getting a little jealous over a successful launch of AVATAR - jealous because it is a fully articulated universe, like his. And if he doesn't act on it - his franchise may well be relegated to a back seat as potentially the records will start falling to Pandora.

Again, SO not true. Anyone out there with us?

(Thanks to C.H.U.D. for the heads-up.)

There was always the rumors of 9 movies in the Star Wars series. Years after Jedi the rumors died and it seems like all we heard was there would never be anymore movies then we get Episode one. So I certainly would not say it isnt going to happen I think it very well could. Though the smart move would be for Lucas to let someone else direct, the best Star Wars film made was the one he did not direct which was Empire. Wasnt there weird rumors after Episode three about Lucas talking with Mark Hamill about reprising his role in for a 2014 release? Again just strange rumors I had heard at the time, personally I think Hamill would be a bit old by then but depending on his role they could make it work.

By asfm at 8:40 PM ON 10/21/09

My happiness as a human being is directly proportional to how untrue this rumour is.

By T-ray at 8:44 PM ON 10/21/09

Dear George Lucas,

Rise of the Wookies

That is all

By Tony at 9:00 PM ON 10/21/09

Two words: Blu. Ray. SW old school (screw the prequels) on 1080dpi LCD Hi-Def Surround. Period.

By kentcourtney at 9:04 PM ON 10/21/09

May the franchise be with you...More sequels, prequels and spinoffs. No dilution, just fruition.

By Jason B. at 9:10 PM ON 10/21/09

I call "shananigans". I just can't see this happening. Would it be cool? Sure! But any future movies would need to be thought out better to avoid another Jar Jar or Ewoks type of thing. Could Mark Hamill and the rest still play their parts? Of course, provided that either:

1) it's set a couple dozen years after the end of episode 6.
2) Hamill alone as the Jedi "ghost" version of Luke.

By Acceler8 at 9:25 PM ON 10/21/09

I'd like to see movies of some of the events from all the novels set after Episode 6, including the Jedi Academy and Han and Leia's kids.

By Monsters and Rockets at 10:44 PM ON 10/21/09

As much as part of me would like to see some movies set after the original trilogy, featuring an older Luke and company, I really doubt that would happen... And if it did, they'd probably be pretty terrible. At this point Lucas seems to have lost whatever it was that made him great, and he'd just give us more of the fakey CGI, clunky dialogue, "cute" aliens and ponderous council debates he forced on us in the prequels.

By Xizor at 10:57 PM ON 10/21/09

I'd love to see an animated version of Shadows of The Empire. I don't care what style its in, I just want to see the story on screen. Mark Hamill does great voice-over work. Han is frozen throughout the story too, so no need for Harrison Ford to be involved.

By oddball at 11:20 PM ON 10/21/09

Lucas said years ago there won't be anymore movies.

By Ryan at 11:30 PM ON 10/21/09

He should have gone back in the early 90's and done more Star Wars with Luke, Leia, and Han. Ten years on for a group of fan favorites is one thing. Fisher could have still been the hot heroine. She just turned 53 and I'm sorry to say, she looks even worse. As it stands Return of Jedi was 26 years ago. You're talking returning after a 30 year absence. Bad idea.

By NateDogg at 11:51 PM ON 10/21/09

Originally I'd heard that there were to be 9 movies and have it set up as a trilogy within a trilogy. Only characters to be in all nine were R2D2 and C3PO. Also there was supposed to be a lapse of 50 years between each group of 3 movies, which explains why only the 2 robots were to be in all nine movies.

By grag at 12:45 AM ON 10/22/09

There was talk a few years ago that Lucas was going to (somehow) convert the six existing films into 3D and re-release them, but nothing seems to have come of it. I wonder if that could somehow have morphed and re-emerged as this new rumor.

By x-wing20 at 1:06 AM ON 10/22/09

there is already so much expanded universe material during that time frame it would pointless unless they did an adptation of the new jedi order which a trilogy cannot do justice too.

By Gilveron at 2:18 AM ON 10/22/09

I remember reading as a kid back in the 1980s that there were originally supposed to be 9 "episodes" to the Star Wars saga, and that Lucas picked his favorite 3 (Eps. IV, V, and VI) to film. In more recent interviews, however, he said his original script, "began when Vader walked through the door on Leia's ship [in Episode IV], and ended when he threw the Emperor down the shaft [in Episode VI]," and he added that he crafted the prequels out of background work he did for the original Star Wars films. That would seem to imply that Episode VI is the end. Personally, I don't know what a proposed third trilogy would be about, but I can guarantee (and I'm willing to get a little egg on my face too) it would NOT be based on any material previously published by another author. Lucas would write his own stories.

By Cheve at 2:55 AM ON 10/22/09

Lucas is bored of saying that the Darth Vader saga is over and that without it, theres no plot for more movies. Either he comes up with new characters and a new time set for them or I don't really believe there will ever be more Starwars movies made for cinema. The Clone wars don't count, of course, as they are simply episodes of a TV series released on movie theatres. Maybe he'll do one day a movie theatre release of episodes of the real action TV series, but that doesn't count as a Star Wars movie either.

By dukethepcdr at 3:39 AM ON 10/22/09

I hope the rumours about a set of new movies is true. Especially that someone else will direct them. The best Star Wars movie ever was directed by the great Lawrence Kasadan (Episode V). Lucas is a visionary and has great imagination but he can't direct actors to give very good performances.

I hope the rumours about 3-D remakes of the other trilogies is not true. I love Star Wars, but I won't buy yet another set of the movies on DVD, especially if I have to wear 3-D glasses to watch them.

By Jonas72 at 4:56 AM ON 10/22/09

As long as Lucas stayed on as an idea man, this could work. But please, someone keep that man from ever directing another movie! I'd love to see Spielberg having a go at it, though.

I remember hearing rumours of 9 movies back in the '80s, apparently Lucas himself said so in an interview (not having any Internet back then, there were no way to confirm such rumours, living as I did in a small town in Northern Norway...) Having been a Star Wars geek my entire life, until the new trilogy came along, I'm experiencing very mixed feelings about this. Guess there's nothing for it but to wait and see...

By Sheep Farm at 5:21 AM ON 10/22/09

If you go back to the 70s and 80s, these movies would be great. Today, people have seen it all. Back in the 70s, there had been anything like Star Wars before, so of course it succeeded. But, today, Star Wars is just another movie, and is only know for its historic impact. Many copies have been made, but also new ideas have come about as a result.

George Lucas needs to hitch a ride with Doctor, and go back to the 70s to direct these films, because then, and only then will they be a success!

By RangerPrimeX at 6:20 AM ON 10/22/09

I am all for a new trilogy 7-9 set after the events after the destruction of the second Death Star. I loved the Thrawn Trilogy by Zahn. Due to the age and availability of actors, you will need to set it for a good number of years later. The big one for me is to have someone else direct. Lucas gave us a fantastic universe but his directing was off in the prequels. A stronger producer and director would have made those better films because the basic premise and plot lines were there but the execution in the details were off.

By Nolrog at 9:57 AM ON 10/22/09

>> Here's Marketsaw's reasoning for why Lucas would trouble himself to climb off his mattress stuffed with $100 bills:

Here's my reasoning. Ego. There will be more Star Wars movies. Mark it down.

Lucas' ego will get to him eventually and he'll look to make more. Especailly since the 2nd trilogy wasn't universally accepted and prasied.

By TheDocToRx at 10:02 AM ON 10/22/09

There were supposed to be 9. You can get a synaps of the last 3 eps online at starwars.com. Luke rebuilds the jedi order and the bad guys clone luke and Anikin to be bad guys. So the good luke fights the bad/clone luke and the bad anikin, the story looks good...

By kenmarable at 10:31 AM ON 10/22/09

Although I think a *well done* additional trilogy would be great, I'm certainly not expecting anything and agree with the writer.

Plus I have to mention that if I hear any more gushings about how Avatar will be the second coming of scifi movies and put all scifi every created to shame with its incredible 3Dishness and awesomosity, I think I'll puke (which is also how I usually feel after watching any 3D movie, btw). The level of overhyping on this flick has definitely reached the point of making me less and less interested.

By Duke at 11:09 AM ON 10/22/09

The Emperor uses the dark side of the Force to create a wormhole to escape his apparent death at the end of ROTJ. He ends up in the alternate reality of 2009 U.S. That is why things are so ___ up now. The older actors from "Star Wars" and "Star Trek," including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and William Shatner, unite to fight him. Kanye West gets converted into Darth Urbanus. That is all.

By bonsai13 at 12:07 PM ON 10/22/09

The prequel movies threatened the expanded universes's story of how Darth Vader came too, though in the end the movie held true. If an addtional set of sequels were made I would bet credits that the expanded universe would not be up held, which at that point I may actually stop watching and reading anything Star Wars related. Now on the other hand if they followed the expanded universe story line there would be a lot to pull from but 3 movies would not do it justice. Maybe they could pull from "the New jedi order" era or "the legacy of the force" era would be cool.

By 13th Cylon at 12:46 PM ON 10/22/09

I would be so for this, IF George would scrap Episodes I, II, and III and say it was a typo, and redo them all over again; this time using real writers, real actors and real directors. Lets face it the prequel trilogy had it's moments but over all they were a HUGE disappointment. George got rich, and the fans got the shaft.

I say, George man up and admit Eps 1-3 were crap and let’s redo them to show us a real story, instead of the watered down dreck that you served us.

By zzbickyzz at 12:54 PM ON 10/22/09

George Lucas cannot direct, public knows this from Episodes 1-3, worst of the bunch.
I welcome another director at the healm, bring on episodes 7-9!!!!
Perhaps Peter Jackson?

By Cheapshot at 12:57 PM ON 10/22/09

Yeah, and rocky said "there ain't gonna be no rematch".

Here's to hoping he really would. Say what you want, but I have always wanted a back 3 story line since the rumors of the 80's, and what would it hurt anyway?

By Cheapshot at 12:59 PM ON 10/22/09

By Guns at 2:31 PM ON 10/22/09

Personally I would like to see Quentin Tarantino direct a Star Wars movie.

Now that would be something to see.

There would be Ewok hides nailed to barn doors, and Jar Jar would end up hanging from a flag pole. All most likely in the first five minutes.

Then we could get down to a decent bad vs evil story and forget all the little cute stuff.

By darth voltage at 2:34 PM ON 10/22/09

I heard that there was 9 original books or scripts and that in the end the darkside won the battle between the jedi and sith lords.

By bigalosu at 4:06 PM ON 10/22/09

They could base the movies on a later trilogy/series of books to account for the actors ages, like the Corellian Trilogy or the LEGACY or FATE or JOINER series.

OR

They could do three stand alone books that are placed after Ep. 6 like Crystal Star, Children of the Jedi, Millenium Falcon, etc. and set them up like the first three where they don't follow immediately back-to-back-to-back in time.

OR

They could base a trilogy on the new series of comics with Cade Skywalker, Lukes Great-Great-...-Grandson which is based in a future where the Sith have regained control of the galaxy. This would be their best bet, because: 1. There is not a lot of material written about this period. 2. The only returning actor needs to be Mark Hamil for the ghost scenes with Cade. 3. It is really cool!

By closettrekkie at 4:10 PM ON 10/22/09

please no the orginal 3 films were the best no more

By Narukami at 5:19 PM ON 10/22/09

In the summer of 1977 Lucas gave an interview to the Rolling Stone magazine in which he laid out his plans for a 9 film saga (3 set before the Rebellion, 3 during, and 3 after the Rebel victory) and his hopes that his friends would come and "play" (that is direct) in the sandbox he had created.

See:

The Force Behind Star Wars by Paul Scanlon, Rollingstone Magazine, May 25, 1977

." I think the sequels will be much, much better. What I want to do is direct the last sequel. I could do the first one and the last one and let everyone else do the ones in between."

It wouldn't bother you to have someone else do the ones in between?

"No, it would be interesting. I would want to try and get some good
directors, and see what their interpretation of the theme is. I think it will be interesting, it is like taking a theme in film school, say, okay, everybody do their interpretation of this theme. It's an interesting idea to see how people interpret the genre. It is a fun genre to play with. All the prototype stuff is done now. Nobody has to worry about what a Wookie is and what it does and how it reacts. Wookies are there, the people are there, the environment is there, the empire is there . . . everything is there. And now people will start building on it. I've put up the concrete slab of the walls and now everybody can have fun drawing the pictures and putting on the little gargoyles and doing all the really fun stuff. And it's a competition. I'm hoping if I get friends of mine they will want to do a much better film, like, "I'll show George that I can do a film twice that good," and I think they can, but then I want to do the last one, so I can do one twice as good as everybody else." [Laughs]

By Sithboy at 5:33 PM ON 10/22/09

Oh for pete's sake, let's clear this up... there is NO TRUTH to the rumor that a new set or new trilogy of SW films will be made in 3D. The plan has been to CONVERT the EXISTING films to 3D as the technology progresses. There has been talk of MANY filmmakers being interested in doing this to their existing films, as the technology is emerging to convert 2D films into 3D images. Got it?

By Roger Workman at 11:52 PM ON 10/22/09

Is Sci Fi Wire going to publish every wacko nutjob rumor its editors find on the net? They might be interested to know that Bill Gates and Walt Disney Jr. want to pay people to forward e-mails.

By Kizzik at 4:51 PM ON 10/23/09

all i can say is that if it happens Thrawn better be in there somewhere or it won't be worth watching

By bush1879 at 12:39 AM ON 10/25/09

I can see Mark Hamill, play his role again for I have been reading all the books that have been coming out, I really would like to see a TV Series, that goes by the storys in the books, would be fine.

my guess is one day more live action star wars movies will be made . i doubt this is article is true though . i personally would like to see a complete departure maybe going back a thousand years to the old republic days .

By Stopgeorge at 3:10 AM ON 11/09/09

George Lucas is like Jason Solo. He started out with good intentions but he's drunk on his own power and won't listen to reason. In fact he believes he is still doing good. Does George have a twin sister? Please say yes! Just kidding, I'd love to see more Star Wars but dear God please don't direct it George! If your intent is to ruin what you've created your more than well on the way. Your ideas rock, your implimenting of those ideas?
