The second season premiere of Sanctuary joined Stargate Universe in a Friday night ratings surge, leaping 18 percent among adults ages 18-49 and 7 percent among adults 25-54 versus last year's average, according to Syfy. The series grabbed nearly 1.9 million viewers (1.85) on Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Sanctuary, starring Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne, delivered nearly 1 million adults 18-49 (946,000)—its second highest A18-49 delivery ever—along with 1.15 million adults 25-54.
Sanctuary airs Fridays on Syfy at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

If I read this right, Sanctuary does worse then Dollhouse for ratings? You say it got 1.9 million viewers but Dollhouse in the previous article had "2,235,000 million" viewers. So, Sanctuary in enjoying a "ratings surge" while Dollhouse is an abysmal failure? (Granted, DH is a big network show versus a cable show, but still that's not that bad of a number for viewers).

i actually watch both shows in hopes they get better. and yet they don't and yet i still watch. I might actually stop watching Sanctuary but continue with Dollhouse b/c i know it's getting canceled after this season. still prefer Terminator and Firefly.
ps
Castle is getting canceled this year as well, why not bring back Firefly, heh? Joss. heh?

Great. I like Sanctuary and I think Amanda Tapping is a good actress.
Friday definitely has a cool line up of shows for Sci Fi fans, Smallville (WB), Stargate Universe and Sanctuary.
I think the Sanctuary premiere was good and did a good job of getting a watcher excited about the episodes to come. I hope it lives up to expectations.
I think the ratings for all three shows would be even higher if they were on Thursdays. Fridays are usually the nights to go out. Thank goodness for DVR.

My younger sister even likes Sanctuary and even SGU, and she's a die hard twilight head.
By Thogar at 11:56 PM ON 10/12/09
My whole family watches SGU and Sanctuary and we cover an age range from 13 to 50, both male and female.
Diesel, I agree that more people would watch those shows if they were on another night besides Friday, but please not Thursday! It's already crammed with shows like CSI that beat down the ratings of Fringe. FOX needs to move Fringe back to Mondays or it'll be cancelled soon. It's too good to go down this quickly. It's like X-Files, but I think better because of the crazily funny Walter Bishop. Too bad Anna Torv is still so "wooden" but she's getting a lot better as are the stories.
Sorry for the rambling rant! :o)

I love SciFi Friday with Smallville, Dollhouse, Sanctuary, and SG: Universe. Excellent night for TV.
By Omen at 12:36 AM ON 10/13/09
I watched DH at 9pm.
Sanctuary at 10pm & the reairing of SGU at 11pm. So got all 3 in one night.
SciFi Friday all the way.

Dollhouse is a niche show on a network. They usually don't end up doing well.
Maybe someone will come up with a channel that is devoted exclusively to scifi and fantasy, in their finest sense! Then, all these programs deemed failures because they are in the wrong slot, day, and/or channel, will have a chance to flourish.
Oh wait....

Cable networks approach their original shows differently than broadcast. Cable networks aggressively run repeats (network started doing repeats of new shows in the same week last year, but only sporadically). They run shorter seasons 10-13 episodes. They have tight production budgets, often shooting in cheaper countries like Canada, using fewer big stars, and are willing to give shows a full run to see how they do. I actually had hoped they'd cancel some shows quicker! (Black Widow anyone?) They're thinking long haul with DVD and download sales and streaming factored in. Cable also caters to more niche audiences, Syfy in particular, and can deliver targeted demographics rather than broad categories. And Cable has been programming off season or in times/days with less competition. Networks have affiliates to contend with as well as bigger budgets, stars, and of course seasonal, prime-time competition. They need big numbers and fast. If Firefly had been a SyFy show, it might have stayed on the air for years.

I really enjoyed Sanctuary - and enjoyed it even more the second time around on Hulu. *Such* detail! Next week looks like the big payoff for this weeks ep. Yikes!
I'm hoping SGU grows on me. Not looking good that I can't remember most character names after 3 hours...
Smallville. No. Just no. Teen angst in twentysomethings. No. Same story, just with cousin.

i'm kind of so-so with the ratings for sanctuary's season 2, because i seem to be stuck in the past of household ratings being the big thing to pay attention to. (and no actual rating was given for sanctuary)
but it seems syfy is happy with sanctuary's other part of the ratings, so good! :)
btw, i watch 'smallville', 'medium', then 'sanctuary'. i watch 'stargate universe' the next day on syfy rewind.
stay strong, sanctuary, you're a GREAT show! :D

Sanctuary looks great this season... I beleive they have the story and characters down to make great entertainment.
No show does creatively well it's first season, save a few rare exceptions. We have been spoiled by the likes of Farscape, BSG, and Firefly, which actually had great stories and development right out the gate.
Shows like ST, ST:TNG, the rest of the ST family, Andromeda, et al all had first seasons spent getting things underway.
The Science Fiction story line and genre is not something easy to develop in one show. Even the movies take a bit to get one accustomed to the ideas and fictional components being introduced to the viewer.
That said, Dollhouse is doing poorly in it's second season because the story line is rather much rubber stamp like, episode after episode being much the same, after having had great promise in the use of the 'programmed being' story, what with the instant ability to have a technician or well versed expert available to handle any given situation at the flick of a switch. They however reduced it to romance, escort-land, and garbage-du-jour.
Look back into the show logs on any of the great series from Science Fiction. With the exception of the aforementioned greats, I defy you to find a real 'fan favorite' episode in their first seasons.
Maybe it takes a season for writers, actors, and producers to become relaxed in the writing, the characters, and themselves to not take themselves so seriously, and be able to write better SF.
I feel reasonably sure though, that SGU and Sanctuary will be prevailing. - kh

Great to hear Sanctuary has increased it's ratings. The show is really coming into it's own. Season 2 looks great and I love seeing Amanda Tapping expand her range as an actress. Have to say that none of the characters on SGU grabbed me- so I don't plan on watching it again. I found it hard to care about the show.
By Bizzle at 8:14 AM ON 10/13/09
I tried watching this show a couple of times. There were definitely some good parts, but the basic premise just keeps coming back on me to annoy me. A monster menagerie, sorry meh, I'll pass. Next show please!
PS
Amanda, your British accent is terrible, not passable at all.
By Whovian1 at 8:36 AM ON 10/13/09
I like a lot about SGU, but I don't like having another Baltar--another genius scientist who's probably a traitor and at a minimum has a secret agenda. Bah!
By victor at 1:07 PM ON 10/13/09
@kyle
Joss can't bring back Firefly because fox has the rights to the series and if the network wanted to bring it back, it can but won't. And castle has pretty decent ratings for a show on ABC. If Dollhouse gets cancelled, Joss himself has said that he'd probably go to making web content like Dr. Horrible instead of TV.
I love Firefly as much, scratch probaly more than most, but it's not coming back and there probably won't be a sequel to serenity, so just enjoy the time you had with Firefly and Serenity and realize that there are other shows the actors have signed onto.
Morena baccarin: V
Gina Torres: Flashforward
Alan tudyk: V and Dollhouse(well, he's just on the pilot of V or something like that), but his character(spoiler alert) is dead
Adam Baldwin: Chuck(where's the Chuck love on this site?)
Summer Glau: Dollhouse, and they may do a TV movie for TSCC
Nathan Fillion: Castle
All the actors are pretty much booked(with the exception of ron glass who's not really doing much other than the Death at a funeral remake). The chances that everyone is just gonna drop their contracts to be on a comeback of Firefly is doubtful.

"SIGH"-Fy...
Does anyone ever get sick of the constant irrational ramblings of fanboys?
I liked Sanctuary during the second half of season 1. It started really slow, but picked up nicely and I had high hopes for it. The super assassin story arc has been done way too many times on way too many shows, so this show is getting downgraded on my priority list. I will now only watch it on HULU during my lunch hour and will not waste time watching it at home.
Hopefully, SY-FY won't ruin SGU too or I'll need to get a life!
By Hasekblack at 10:31 PM ON 10/13/09
I like this show better when it's called Torchwood.

I stopped watching Doll House because I didn’t FEEL anything and I was not intrigued by the possibilities. Sanctuary managed to keep me because I FELT something, I was not a totally passive viewer. Having said that, I do feel there is some room for improvement. To those who are carping on the actresses’ accent – I’m British and she sounds just like everyone around here – of course, English accents are not at all the same all over the isle and there is a HUGE difference in cadence, tonality, word choice and flavor depending on your age and where you live and where you have traveled. For instance, My Gran, schooled in the US as a child sounds totally different than my mum, who, lived in Paris for 12 years and Japan for 2 and everyone says I sound totally different from them despite having a sillier cadence (naturally! They DID teach me to talk!)
With SGU I’m not hooked yet. I’ve not made any sort of emotional commitment but I’m intrigued.

Love Sanctuary! SGU not so much. SGU is so different from the other Stargate shows which were entertaining and made sense. SGU is just ... blah! I hope it improves. SANCTUARY, on the other hand, hit the ground running. I can't wait for next week's episode!

Santuary deserves the attention it has received.
SG-U hmmmm. they short shifted Atlantis for this... I will reserve judgement for now
