Spidey 4 writer to tackle Warcraft for Sam Raimi

\<i\>Spidey 4\<\/i\> writer to tackle \<i\>Warcraft\<\/i\> for Sam Raimi

On Monday, we reported that director Roland Emmerich was waiting for screenwriter Robert Rodat to finish his script for Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov's series of books; now we learn that Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) will also write Warcraft, Sam Raimi's upcoming adaptation of the World of Warcraft MMORPG.

Here's how Variety reported it:

The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of "Warcraft" and shoot the picture after he completes work on "Spider-Man 4," which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures.

Legendary Pictures and vidgame publisher Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, and Warner Bros. will co-finance and distribute.

Is this really the guy? I mean, we love Ryan and all, but mostly because of director Steven Spielberg's work. This is also the guy, remember, who wrote the script for Emmerich's The Patriot, in which Mel Gibson goes all hatchety on the Revolutionary War. Hm. Come to think of it, maybe he is the guy for a WoW movie ...

What do you think?

If they have to make a movie based off a Blizzard game, they should do it on Starcraft. Best of all would be to NOT do a movie based on a Blizzard game.

I basically agree with IronOre, although I'd rather see Diablo in Imax before Starcraft.

By SciFiFan at 1:54 PM ON 10/14/09

So long as they don't screw it over like they did with the Dungeons and Dragons movies. They were ok but disappointing.

Blood and Thunder!

They should let blizzard just make there own CG movie. thier Cut scenes and game lore rocks and i think they would not basterize it the same way hollywood will.

By oddball at 4:43 PM ON 10/14/09

CG movie lol that would tremendously suck. We've all come a long way with with Warcraft and this is our chance to put a real face on Khadgar, Arthas, Jaina all of them. I do have my personal opinions what actor should play who, but we have to take what they give just so long as they can deliver.

This could be just Like Lord of the Rings, but even better. The Patriot was a real good movie and Saving Private Ryan was a damn good movie, so if the writer behind those movies does Warcraft perhaps we may be looking at the most epic movie of all time.

Heck it maybe time to say goodbye to Ttitanic on the top spot.

Blizzard owns the gaming world (practically) if they own the movie world as well these bastards would be damn close to world domination.

I agree with oddball, I expect it to be better than Lord of the Rings also.

Sam Raimi is a great director. Spiderman 1 and 2 were on point and did honor to the source material.

If they can come up with a good plot and honor the source the materila, it will definitely be a hit.

If they do this right, Blizzard could be the Marvel of the gaming industry when it comes to movies.

Oddball and diesel, I have to ask on what planet do you reside that you honestly think a World of Warcraft movie could be better than Lord of the Rings? That's just about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard and the thought that you both may mean it seriously makes me hang my head in geek shame.

Jesus, I mean, I know people sacrifice almost all aspects of their personal lives to play this hell spawned vacuum of life while sacrificing many of the social graces to productive people need to survive in day-to-day life, but that doesn't mean that it's worth a damn for a movie. Lord of the Rings had source material that was transcendent of it's genre. It's literature and the movies managed to grab hold of that while making something wonderful to watch.

WoW, on the other hand, is merely nerd masturbation material. Not saying people don't enjoy it, or have a grand old time with it. But don't make it what it's not.

And for the record, Patriot was a hackneyed Braveheart rip-off that just happened to be able to secure the main actor from it's source material.

By diesel at 8:46 AM ON 10/15/09

Chris - My comment was not meant to belittle Lord of the Rings. They were great movies. My point is that if they come up with a great story and do it right, the movie has the potential to be better.

With a good director, writer and source material, they already have some of the pieces of the puzzle for a great movie.

I think movie studios should strive to create better movies than previous movies.

This movie will only rock if the hero is played by Bruce Campbell...

By bkolber at 9:39 AM ON 10/15/09

the movies in WOW are amazing. A CG movie with that quality and without the limitatons of real Actors and the sometimes made intergration of CG overlays would be awesome

By Tara at 9:47 AM ON 10/15/09

I have to agree with Sidan and bkolber, a CG movie would be amazing! I'm afraid no real actor can compete with my imagination or Blizzard's for that matter. Though, as a gal who loves the gnomes (that's really all I play)...isn't it about time we see a CG cut scene with gnomes?! I'm desperately hoping Cataclysm will have some gnome action in the cut scenes.

It's funny to read post by people who dont have a clue such as Chris "WoW, on the other hand, is merely nerd masturbation material." Obviously someone who knows nothing about the World of Warcraft. There is so much lore with this game many movies could easily be made out it. I stayed away from the novels because I thought they would be a joke, well I have read about 5 of them now and they are well done. But they wont let just anyone come and write a novel for them either.
Personally I have been following this story since the news broke a couple years ago that Blizzard wanted to do a movie. The reason it is taking so long is Blizzard will NOT allow just anyone to do it. Uwe Boll was laughed out of their offices and told that he would never be allowed the rights to make any Warcraft move ever. It took Blizz quite a while to find the right company then they settled on Legendary, took them a while longer to find the right director, and now they have one. Blizzard will be watching every aspect of this movie and if they dont like something it will be changed. I do think that this movie will be up there with Lord of the Rings, way to early to say if it could ever be better.

Chris, while I agree on an academic level that LotR is by far the most superior piece of fantasy writing to every grace the printed page, it's not fair to say that Warcraft is dribble. Anyone who has stuck with the franchise from the beginning (before everyone jumped on the bandwagon with the release of WoW) knows that Warcraft has a SUBSTANTIAL amount of lore, and Blizzard hired damn good writers to create that lore. While I don't think a Warcraft movie would be better, it most certainly has the potential to sit proudly on anyone's shelf next to their extended LotR collection.

Do I think that Rodat can do a good job? Yes. Warcraft is in essence about two nations at war. Let ILM handle the dragons and the epic beasties. I think a good war film writer could do a damn good job in delivering a fantasy movie that will please fans and the general public alike.

If they are doing a WOW movie it should be CGI like the actual WOW cinematics with the same voice actors.Life action would just ruin it

By kirk at 2:03 AM ON 10/17/09

I completely agree with VOIDance, life action will ruin it. Any one who has played WOW and watched the cinematic s know it could easily be made into a feature film.

By subatai at 4:43 PM ON 10/18/09

Wondering how they'll handle the barrens Chuck norris jokes Lol

By SteelEagle at 1:21 PM ON 10/20/09

Everyone needs to step back and realise there's a difference between Warcraft and World of Warcraft. Any sort of movie should deal with the original invasion by the Orcs and the founding of the Alliance to defend Azeroth from them. In all, I have my hopes but would set my sights too high. Hollywood has a way of taking the fantasy genre and making a cartoon out of something many people take kinda seriously.
