The episode of Dollhouse you MUST watch

The episode of \<i\>Dollhouse\<\/i\> you MUST watch
We learn how Sierra (Dichen Lachman, right, with Eliza Dushku) came to the Dollhouse in tonight's episode, "Belonging."

Fox's Dollhouse may be in trouble, but you wouldn't know it from this week's episode, "Belonging," which we can only describe as breathtaking.

This is the episode that should have started off the season. This is the sort of writing that makes Joss Whedon fans so loyal. These are the performances that have made people follow Whedon alums to whatever project they do. And, sadly, this is the last episode you're going to see until Dec. 4.

Whedon himself remains positive, if not exactly optimistic: In a comment on the Whedonesque.com Web site, he says that his decision to direct an upcoming episode of Glee doesn't mean Dollhouse isn't getting more episodes. "Our numbers mean that! But I kid. Okay, we're not exactly saving all the good stuff for 14-22, but nobody's closed the door."

Keep your fingers crossed, Whedonites. In the meantime, here's why tonight's episode will restore your faith in Dollhouse.

Excellent direction by Johnathan Frakes. Number One does a bang-up job, making the action scenes compelling and frenetic while getting a performance out of Topher (Fran Kranz) that will make you fall in love with the little worm.

Dichen Lachman. Many fans have been publicly complaining that Dollhouse has become nothing more than an Eliza Dushku fashion show and that we never learn enough about the other Actives. In "Belonging," we get an entire episode about Sierra/Priya. We learn more about her relationship with the well-connected man who forced her into the Dollhouse, whether she'll be betrayed by Adele (Olivia Williams) and whether her attachment to Victor (Enver Gjokaj) can survive continual imprinting. Lachman gives such a powerhouse performance that you'll wonder why she's been largely relegated to the show's sidelines.

Writing by Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon. The Dr. Horrible alumni have written what are arguably the best episodes of Dollhouse, including the unaired "Epitaph One." They made us laugh and cry with the critically acclaimed Web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog. (They also appear in small roles.) And in "Belonging," they bring back the snappy gallows humor and compelling pathos that Whedon fans have come to expect.

We may have to wait until December to see Summer Glau's appearance, but "Belonging" will leave you hopeful. The show may not make it, but with episodes like this, it will certainly go out with a bang. Dollhouse airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Hey! Jonathan Frakes was not only NUMBER ONE in Star Trek (you should know that!) but he is a good director AND actor. Needed to put that out there!

By nilus at 10:24 AM ON 10/23/09

I know the Internet thinks they are all hot, but all I think when I see the pictures above are those girls need to eat a damn Cheeseburger.

By Hercules40 at 10:33 AM ON 10/23/09

"You must see..."

What are you know? Pimps for FOX and Joss Whedon?

And Jonathan Frakes was "Number One".

If this Episode should have started the season, then they screwed-up.

"Dollhouse" has already been removed from "Season Pass" from TiVo after 2 Episodes. Story went nowhere.

I'll hate missing Summer Glau, but then again, I already miss TSCC.

By Hercules40 at 10:36 AM ON 10/23/09

OOps, that should have said:

"What are you now?"

Darned "internets"

By Kyle Nin at 10:38 AM ON 10/23/09

Isn't Vincent Ventresca also supposed to be in this episode?

I know it's been a while, but I still miss "The Invisible Man". It was such a great show.

By Closettrekkie at 10:51 AM ON 10/23/09

This show,s been messed round so much by Fox I feel sorry for Joss it,s a bit like Firefly all over again. I liked it at the start but have have lost interest scince then.Maybe Fox after the series is finished will let him rearrange the episode,s the way he first wanted them and release a writers dvd set for the show.

By bobby burger at 11:18 AM ON 10/23/09

Who wrote this? Whedon? Someone at Fox? Eric Kripke?
There's no good episode, must watch episode, incredible best episode.
They all look the same, they all suck.
The show sucks and that's why the ratings are low and it's going to be canceled.

By Kyle Nin at 11:34 AM ON 10/23/09

What does Eric Kripke have to do with this?

And not all "Dollhouse" episodes are bad. I loved the first season finale episode ("Alpha").

I miss The Invisble Man, I also miss TSCC, but at the moment I have to say I won't miss Dollhouse. Dushku is an experienced actress but sadly not a versatile one, the series needs someone who could carry it. She can't. She's nice and was wonderful as Faith, as any feisty chick really, but this is the wrong vehicle for her.

To be fair I have never watched an episode of Dollhouse so I can't comment whether it's any good or not but reading this short article it appears Sci Fi Wire and it's writers love the series and most viewers say it sucks. Now who's right?

By Kyle Nin at 12:25 PM ON 10/23/09

"I miss The Invisible Man."

Agree.

"I also miss TSCC."

Disagree.

I honestly can't figure out why people loved that show. It was slow and boring, with barely any likable characters. Maybe fans were brainwashed? Yeah, I'm gonna go with that.

By baron_elric at 1:35 PM ON 10/23/09

The few episodes we've seen this season have been a good continuation from the great ending last season had. My wife and I are really looking forward to tonight and to everything else that gets aired.
I hope tonight's episode will get more buzz like this, and that it brings in more viewers. Gotta keep those Fox beancounters happy.

By Bluemcgee at 3:35 PM ON 10/23/09

If most viewers say "it sucks," then why are they still viewing? In actual fact, this show doesn't suck, it's just the constant need to try and introduce new people to it (and not confuse them) that sucks.

The show has shown so many times it can produce good/great/amazing episodes, but only when it stops trying to please everyone (and possibly when Eliza isn't the main focus). It is at its best when it explores its premise, instead of it's mission of the week.

For anyone to unfairly critique this show on some of the episodes that have been show -- which, to be honest are more than likely due to FOX -- is just wrong. This show will probably get cancelled after this season. I don't actually mind, because at least FOX gave it another chance after the first season's dismall ratings.

By NYMARTY at 4:26 PM ON 10/23/09

Wise up FOX. Put DOLLHOUSE into a better day and time slot and viewers will flock to this one of a kind most interesting show.
DOLLHOUSE is well written and no wonder. The Whedons are brilliant. This time iits Maurissa and Jed Whedon.

By gorehound696 at 5:04 PM ON 10/23/09

breathtaking episode as in taking my breath away due to boredom and stupidity.
i will never be there for you dollhouse.you lost me after the 6 or 7 horrid episodes i watched.boring, mindless, not good, only a hugewheddon fan would support it.
wish firefly was around cause this show sure ain't no firefly.

By Dollhouse at 5:47 PM ON 10/23/09

I'm so excited for tonight, this show is one of my favorites on TV.

By j at 5:49 PM ON 10/23/09

wilcoy: the show is actually pretty cool. the most vocal against it are the angry tscc fans. you'll usually see most negative comments followed by "fox should have kept tscc" or phrases like it.

By prospero at 7:41 PM ON 10/23/09

yes I have to agree, the ones that seem so against this show tend to be fans of the idea that it had to be this show or terminator last year. This is, of course, ridiculous logic. Both could have been saved, both could have been cancelled. Television has definitely gone the way of "Network", thanks to the mindless masses that actually care who the next American Idol or Biggest Loser are. Its sad really. CM Kornbluth's "Marching Morons" have come to roost in America.

By Sylko at 7:42 PM ON 10/23/09

I like dollhouse, but doubt I'll miss it when it's gone. Firefly was far superior. I still miss that one. Dollhouse has had some great episodes, "alpha" "epitaph one", but Echo is not a compelling character, nor isBallard ditch them and ratings would go up

By Mandy at 3:06 AM ON 10/24/09

I miss Dark Shadows, I miss Forever Knight, I miss The Dresden Files. I won't miss Doll House.

By Reed Farrington at 3:27 AM ON 10/24/09

I agree. This really was an outstanding episode of Dollhouse. All the performances created an emotional impact. I usually find the Topher character to be somewhat annoying, so it was surprising to me that I enjoyed this episode so much since he plays such a major role in it.

I admit that I watch Dollhouse because of Echo, but this episode showed that Dollhouse can be entertaining without focusing so much on Echo.

By baron_elric at 11:39 AM ON 10/24/09

I was going to watch the episode no matter what. It was nice to see this promotion for the episode, and the actual episode easily lived up to what was said about it here. Dollhouse has improved enormously this year, and I was already a strong follower from season one.

By Cyrus at 11:50 AM ON 10/24/09

this was probably the BEST episode that i've seen with this show. i've been wanting more character development with the dolls themselves. it's so difficult on this show that the most interesting characters are those that are different every week. but this one was excellent. more like this please.

and Eliza Dushku in that dress wants me so badly!

By RobotDickens at 11:57 AM ON 10/24/09

the episode of Dollhouse that I MUST watch will be the one that never airs.

By jedimom at 12:06 PM ON 10/24/09

ratings are up, it tanked, their lowest yet.
TSCC baby.
http://wp.me/pnjeY-41x

By jedimom at 12:10 PM ON 10/24/09

uhm prospero, we angry tscc fans got that idea it was one of the other from the suits at FOX, the horses mouth, that is exactly what Preston Beckworth and Kevin Reilly said, there could be only one
and Dollhouse is no Highlander baby.

the alpha storyline was the best thing about it and they ended it, the unaired epi was good, it was in fact an awful lot like the plot of...tscc....

By thunderstud at 6:22 PM ON 10/24/09

@RobotDickens... you mean Epitath Two, right? Yeah, that one would be awesome. Too bad about it though... :)

@jedimom... "ratings are up, it tanked, their lowest yet." - What the hell does that mean? Are you saying it did good or bad?

By Null House at 8:14 PM ON 10/24/09

Null and void - - - just like nearly ALL of FOX execs decisions . . . what a NOWHERE network . . . they get a couple right and drop them . . . I won't give this a second season of my time for them to waste my "investment" = not that the characters are worth "caring" about!

By RobotDickens at 11:38 PM ON 10/24/09

@thunderstud. Your name is as funny as mine, but no I dissed the show cuz I think it stinks, but if people like it than more power to them.

By Pixel at 12:05 AM ON 10/25/09

Just finished watching this episode - amazing. So many great performances, so many moments, seeing the characters face dilemmas that had never even occurred to them, and no matter what they try to do to make it right, they just end up more compromised.

Dollhouse is easily my most anticipated show currently airing, and the wait until December is going to be a long one.

By pixel 2 at 5:55 AM ON 10/25/09

is dichen lachman real? she seems an alien, like predator!

By cattypie at 12:07 PM ON 10/25/09

I know there are Dollhouse HATERS out there. I am a fan, but I am disappointed sometimes.

I just watched the episode mentioned in the article, and it was really FANTASTIC!! Why haven't they been doing this all along!! (Please don't answer that - I know a lot of people will chime in and say "FOX is why.")

By Pixel at 8:45 PM ON 10/25/09

Pixel 2? Wow, I have a namesake!

Dichen is, if memory serves, of French and Tibetan ancestry, and grew up in Australia. She is entirely real, and having met her when she visited the UK earlier in the year, I can assure you that she is also a lovely, gracious, welcoming woman.

By lookn_4_stars at 9:48 PM ON 10/25/09

Hey Gorehound, if the show is so horrible, why are you still watching it? I can only conclude you must enjoy torturing yourself.

By scubafiend at 1:57 PM ON 11/11/09

Hey Gorehound - I have to assume you wouldn't like ANYTHING with a plot line you have to think for and lacking constant blood and bodyparts...

I love this show - will continue to watch each and every week. Joss does AMAZING work - perhaps intelligence will strike management and they will stop cancelling his excellent shows... One can but hope....
