The hottest stories and best comments of the week

The hottest stories and best comments of the week

Here's a list of our hottest stories (like the chart above, in which we ranked female scientists on their hotness and plausibility) and best comments this week, in case you missed anything. Consider it a DVR for SCI FI Wire.

Enjoy!

Our story: Chart: Sci-fi's sexy scientists ranked by hotness/plausibility

Your best comment: Did anyone else notice they have Rachel Weisz listed twice - and in two mutually exclusive categories - for playing the same character? She's listed as "Not hot but plausible" for The Mummy and "Hot but not plausible" for The Mummy Returns. How does that work?— CrazyOkie

Our story: Trek 2 shocker: The original Spock and Kirk—in 3-D?

Your best comment: Here's an idea.....how about they stop doing so many interviews and just write the script.— js09am

Our story: 6 most awesome Stephen King horror films (plus 3 that sucked)

Your best comment: I thought Kubrick's The Shining was crap...the man never seemed to understand that the characters in a story should be real people. The events of the movie could have been predicted from the very first shot...you just knew that Jack Nicholson was going to go crazy, and Shelly Duvall was going to be a victim. I thought they should have cast Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers for the leads...yup, Gloria and the Meathead as the perfect sympathetic troubled American family. That would have been a hoot....—Token

Our story: You can own Firefly's Serenity for just $2,495

Your best comment: I picked a terrible week to stop pooping hundred dollar bills.—MetalPause

Our story: New FlashForward mystery: Was that a spaceship?

Your best comment: it's nothing. shows like this, like Lost and Alias and Fringe, don't have plots. they have a series of ongoing mysteries, one replacing the other in an overlapping, seemingly endless pattern. 'Answers' are considered 'conclusions', and the networks don't want tv shows that might be popular to end, thus depriving them of content and funding. it's the limitations of the medium that creates this. you either learn to enjoy the Art (or Artifice) of the show without attempting to glean insight to something that isn't there, or simply don't watch.—robonerd

Our story: Heroes shocker: Original cast member will die soon

Your best comment: They're going to kill a cast member????? Wow, I could see killing a character, but this is pretty extreme.—John-Video

Our story: Roland Emmerich still game for Stargate sequel film?

Your best comment: So wait. The day after tomorrow isn't the indepence day sequel?

2012 isn't completing the trilogy?

Oh wait, they're all the same movie, rebooted over and over agian, my fault. I thought they were sequels. (But don't get me wrong, I liked ID4.)

I guess he's out of destroying the world ideas, so now he has to go back to his old ideas.—scifi-ED

Our story: Ron Moore calls Star Trek's tech "meaningless"

Your best comment: what technobabble is to Trek, love triangles were to Moore's Battlestar, personally I'll take the technobabble—daug21

Our story: 20 awesomely hot Slave Leia costumes (slightly NSFW)

Your best comment: I have never seen so much pasty white flesh since high school gym class.—Jayguana

Our story: Poll: Who's the greatest TV vampire of all time?

Your best comment: I have to agree that the Count from Sesame Street wins this hands down. To this day, I still shake in my boots when I hear thunder in the distance.— Eldon

Our story: Star Trek's sexiest Vulcan will be back on TV soon

Your best comment: As long as she's not playing another efIn" VAMPIRE! VAPMIRE!VAMPIRE! VAMPIRE! THERE COMING OUT OF THE WALLS NOW!!AARRGHH!!—muadib

Our story: Good news for Chuck fans! It's coming back SOON

Your best comment: Best news I've heard in a while. This just made my day. I would gladly sacrifice any show in my DVR schedule if it meant I could watch Chuck sooner. I've followed Heroes since the beginning and would give it up over Chuck anyday!!! Bring on the kung-fu!!!!— jjhubbard

Our story: Roland Emmerich promises not to ruin Asimov's Foundation

Your best comment: Roland Emerich "promises" not to ruin Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy. Uh, huh. That ranks right up there with "the check's in the mail".—RGeo

That's kind of pathetic when you think one of the best comments of the week is someone calling a horror classic like The Shining crap.

By Closettrekkie at 3:27 PM ON 10/16/09

Top 10s

Instead of all these stupid top tens why don,t you start taking these things seriously. You have huge fan base out there and should pick a topic or subject at the start of the week on a weekly basis and create a voting system and I,m sure the fans will take the time and vote and debate the subjects chosen you may be surprised at the results.

By Rusco at 3:45 PM ON 10/16/09

I just got burned. D: I commented about Rachel Weisz first. Apparently, I wasn't as detailed as I should have been.

By Iis4island at 4:12 PM ON 10/16/09

Hey SciFi Wire -- when are you going to start a monthly "best comments on our best comments" feature? Because, you know, we don't get nearly enough snark with our sci fi news when we visit your site as it is.

By oddball at 5:00 PM ON 10/16/09

After a few more months of this people are gonna get tired of this. Waste of web space when there's more important information out there than this.

And like Mandy pointed out some of these comments can be really insulting. But of course it's just too much trouble to just post news and updates only.

But just like the name conversion people are gonna hate it, but it's still gonna happen.

By Marty B. at 5:20 PM ON 10/16/09

oddball, but a few month is like _eons_ on the web!

I would prefer "community nomination and voting" system like closettrekkie's outlining for the top ten lists as well as the comments (like the thumbs up and down you find on YouTube, Yahoo, etc.).

By TJ9000 at 5:21 PM ON 10/16/09

"Waste of web space"
Yes, because web space is so limited.

"more important information out there than this"
Yeah, like real news, like what's happening with the Gosselin family

Seriously, I've never seen so many haters of a web site that keep coming back for more. I love the fun stuff at Syfy. That comment about killing a heroes cast member was hilarious!

By Craig at 6:00 PM ON 10/16/09

Thanks for the feedback. Based on how many people have been reading the hottest stories/best comments feature since we started it, we plan to keep it around (same for our lists, btw). If people stop reading it, we'll stop doing it, but so far both ideas are VERY popular.

I love Closettrekkie's idea and will look into how feasible it is. Love Marty B's idea about applying thumbs up/down to comments and will see if our current system will support that.

Best,

c

PS Hi Marty! Good to see you around ;)

By UPOOP at 6:29 PM ON 10/16/09

But the movie, The Shinning WAS crap. No substance, just Nicholson going nuts. Seen that in how many movies now? Ruined King's book too. The mini series had both substance and the book.

By Muldfeld at 6:52 PM ON 10/16/09

BSG's approach to the dark side of attraction was real and artistic and true to life. If some people can't get over cheesy sci fi conventions, I feel sorry for them. When I was a kid, I used to wonder if there was something wrong with me for not understanding all the technobabble and not finding it particularly engaging. Ron Moore explained it all to me. His work is mostly brilliant and BSG kicks the crap out of TNG.

By David N. at 10:35 AM ON 10/17/09

I'm still laughing over "They're going to kill a cast member?????" Hilarious!

By Eldon at 11:05 AM ON 10/17/09

Yeah, killing a cast member. Classic!

By thehomegaman at 3:16 PM ON 10/17/09

Craig, keep it up. People seem to come here expecting NPR or BBC, but on science fiction only. Don't pander to those who are confused or in denial about the purpose of the site.

Besides, a little snark and humor is always a nice addition to the site. These lists are a great concept.

By Nyarlathotep at 3:23 PM ON 10/17/09

@Muldfeld,

perhaps you'd be better off watching reality-shows and soaps then, sounds like sci-fi isnt for you if you want realism and soap-drama, you know like battlestar galactica.

And BSG -was- cheesey. Cliche, uncreative and laughable. Go read some real sci-fi like Olaf Stapledon or Hal Clement and see what the genre is really about ; imagination, creativity and the ability to think beyond the norm. I.e. not the crap most people here like.

By cylon_conspiracy at 9:08 PM ON 10/17/09

I have to admit, I actually like these best of quotes. Some are quite funny.

I'm torn between AICN, with it's archaic HTML and Jr. High attitude, i09 with it's snooty elitist star system, and this place, which I fear will eventually have even less sci-fi coverage as the brand evolves over time.

Anyway. No killing cast members, lol.

By cylon_conspiracy at 9:12 PM ON 10/17/09

I meant its, not it's. Although it's probably clear what I meant. Grammar and its rules.

By John Duncan Yoyo at 12:17 AM ON 10/18/09

Do you have a readable version of that poster somewhere? I would sure like to be able to see it and read it.

By Flux Cheese at 2:26 AM ON 10/18/09

I'm not sure if these comments are in fact the best ones, but it is interesting to see what scifiwire thinks.

By closettrekkie at 1:17 PM ON 10/19/09

I have a few points to add if you are taking my previous comment seriously.
You could run a Hit or Miss poll on scfi shows at the end of the given year.
Maybe a rating box added to the leave a comment section of 1-5 so that on any particular show when people are making postings on them you could be able to keep a running total.
Before you are doing any special features on or interviews on a given show if you leave enough warning people could post favourite plot archs ,seasons, actors on the show etc...
I realise you,re probably doing the last one already so I,ll stop now
