We've reported scattered comments about the Star Trek sequel development ever since Star Trek came out. Throughout the summer, director J.J. Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have hinted at their early development as they promoted their show Fringe and the writers' movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Now we've got them all in one place talking about Trek. Abrams spoke to a group of reporters on Oct. 8 in Santa Monica, Calif., and Orci and Kurtzman gave another press conference later that day. We've compiled the eight directives, if you will, that they gave for their sequel to the biggest Star Trek film of all.
The reboot of the Star Trek canon inspired fans to imagine the possibilities of this new, young cast revisiting classic Trek missions from their new perspective. Perhaps another Khan, or Mudd's women. The fan fic writes itself. While the script is still in early development, Abrams promised the best of both worlds. "In going forward, the fun of this movie series is that we will have the opportunity, given its alternate timeline, to cross paths with any of the experiences, places and characters that existed in the original series," Abrams said. "We have to be really careful, obviously, doing that. I don't want to do something that is so inside that only die-hard fans will appreciate."
The best Treks addressed philosophical, ethical or social issues that made sense even if you didn't understand future technology or alien cultures. That's where they want the sequel to go, but don't worry. They're not doing Gitmo. "It is the job of the next film to go a little bit deeper," Abrams said. "It shouldn't be any less fun or take itself too seriously, but consider who these people are now and grow with them, and just examine them a little more closer, now that we've gotten through the pleasantries and introductions."
With such a strong jolt to the franchise, a studio would certainly want to think of back-to-back sequels. Even the fans would want to see them crank out Star Trek 2 and 3 as quickly as possible. The writers said they won't, but for a good reason. "It's very, very important to us to make sure that each movie is good," Kurtzman said. "Not 'Hey, let's do as many as possible.' Part of what is great about Star Trek is that it's a continuing adventure, so you naturally think that there will be many, hopefully, but we only focus on what comes next, and then build off of that."
Being the biggest Star Trek in the franchise's history, it's doubtful anyone was meaning to catch the flick but just couldn't work it into their schedule. Still, if there were any holdouts, you can just wait for the sequel. "I guarantee you, whatever the story is, and whatever the final movie ends up being, I know it will be something that will work on its own terms and be something that you don't need to know and study Star Trek to get," Abrams said. "But, if you are a fan, there will hopefully be gift after gift of connections, references, characters that you hold near and dear. At least, that's the intent."
Abrams has been discussing the Star Trek sequel as if he's guaranteed to direct it. However, in an unrelated question about the possibility of shooting in 3-D (that's a big maybe), Abrams phrased it interestingly. "If I, in fact, direct the Star Trek sequel, 3-D could be really fun," Abrams said. If? Well, he's certainly investing a lot of time in prepping the sequel. "It's obviously just movie-to-movie," Abrams said. "The fact that we are now actively discussing the second film is surreal and very nice, and I'm thrilled. I hope that that results in something worthy of your time. But it's one of those things that you just don't know."
Perhaps Leonard Nimoy was just being modest when he said Star Trek doesn't need him anymore. Abrams and company still welcome him. "I can't imagine a Star Trek movie not needing him," Abrams said. "I'm sure that what he's saying is a combination of modesty and honesty. He may actually feel that way. Working with him again would be a joy. It is clearly too early, given that we are just now talking story, to conclude whether or not Spock Prime is in the film or not. Do I want to work with him again? Of course, 100 percent. I'd love to."
Abrams explained that the on-screen death of Capt. Kirk in Star Trek: Generations made it impossible to work him into the new Star Trek storyline. However, now that the new actors are established as the crew, maybe now he can focus on a way to bring back Kirk. "I feel like the first movie did some of the heavy lifting that needed to be done, in order to free us to continue, going forward," Abrams said. "Maybe there's less of a burden and there's going to be more opportunity to work with him again. I would love to work with him."
Abrams shunned 3-D on Star Trek purely out of insecurity with his own filmmaking chops. Now that he's seen his contemporaries use it, he's more ready to jump on board. "Paramount talked to me about doing the first one in 3-D," Abrams said. "Having it only been my second film, I was petrified just at the addition of it. I thought it would be another dimension of pain-in-the-ass. I was so worried that, instead of being a decent 2-D movie, it would have been a bad 3-D one. I'm open to looking at it because now I feel a little bit more comfortable. What I've seen of Avatar makes me want to do it, because it's so crazy cool-looking."

Hopefully, the new crew will meet the Borg very soon in the new movie and get blown out of the stars to end this garbage.
By Scjessey at 8:48 AM ON 10/09/09
I would think that using 3D camera technology would probably make it more difficult for Abrams to make such extensive use of lens flare. I liked that effect because it added to the whole "glossy newness" of the picture.
Much as I like William Shatner as Kirk, I really cannot see him being in the next movie. That Kirk is dead, and trying to bring him back (even in a flashback) will do the franchise no favors. In fact, it could potentially make what was already a pathetic and poorly-conceived end to a beloved character even worse.
By Cr8z13 at 9:06 AM ON 10/09/09
They absolutely need to bring Shatner back for a sequel. Kirk's death in Generation was an abomination. He fell off a bridge for Christ's sake and they buried him under a pile of rocks. Do the man some justice finally!
By antodav at 9:16 AM ON 10/09/09
@TrekTechNot You're a douchebag. Although I have always wanted to see Captain Kirk go up against the Borg.
Bringing back Kirk would be great in theory but honestly, is William Shatner really still in the condition to play an action hero? A cameo appearance by him would satisfy me; you can't undo what was done in Generations, not without a lot of confusing time travel and temporal paradoxes being involved. Personally, I'm just hoping for the return of a classic villain like Khan, or maybe some Klingons this time around (it's actually been quite a while since we've seen them; two consecutive movies featuring Romulans is enough). Any way I know it's going to be great, because Orci, Kurtzman, and Abrams have as of yet failed to disappoint me (well, Transformers 2 kind of sucked, but still...).

If you realy think about it Trek has always ben about time travel & Alternate/Mirror Universe story's after thge way everything had been done with previous movies this was the only logical way to give the series new life- Star Trek was about to left behind-forever because there was no way to truely carry on & because no one has been supporting any new series anyway. I realy enjoyed the new Trek & look forward to revisiting classic Trek missions from a new (& updated) perspective. So many things can be done now that could not be done then. Please fix the Khan Noonien Singh storyline of him being a genetically engineered superhuman tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s-obniously this did not happen & is an alt timeline itself
By Marty B. at 10:09 AM ON 10/09/09
At this point, Shatner could return not quite as Kirk, but the Trek equivalent of a "The Face of Boe" that may be Kirk after millions of years of existence after falling into the plasma rift or whatever it was that got him in the first place.
They could even save on make up, guy's got an old head, and a big head.
By GnDC at 10:09 AM ON 10/09/09
Maybe the crew will run into the Nexus. It does travel around the galaxy in 40 years and time has no meaning within. So if the early crew encounters it, young Kirk can meet old Kirk. And I think we need a Guinan cameo!!
By Lauren at 10:19 AM ON 10/09/09
They should bring back Shatner back what do you think
By AlphaTau at 11:03 AM ON 10/09/09
Kirk's death in "Generation" (along with the entire movie) was an embarrassment to the franchise. We should simply jettison that movie from the franchise - call it a mulligan or a do-over. Since Abrams has already decreed that he will not be bound by what has come before, why in the world should he be bound by arguably the worse Trek movie in the franchise? Bring Shatner/Kirk back in all his glory to face (and insult) the Borg.
By barsoom at 11:11 AM ON 10/09/09
Why not insert a CGIs of Shanter from the OS or from the first couple ST:OS movies?
By unRiel at 11:29 AM ON 10/09/09
I don't care if Shatner comes back. If he does, he should lose a lot of weight; Kirk would never let himself go like that though certainly later Kirk's were a bit heavier certainly. Since we're already in an alternate timeline, we can effect AlphaTau's suggestion by determining that Generations' Kirk was from yet another alternate timeline, not from original Trek's continuity.
By js09am at 11:42 AM ON 10/09/09
Here's an idea.....how about they stop doing so many interviews and just write the script.
By InfiniteMonkey at 11:43 AM ON 10/09/09
Some people just cannot let go. LOL! I wonder how old they are? Let the new generation take over and just get over the fact that Shatner's egotistical maniacal wants to forever be in every Star Trek movie that is being produce is just outdated and diva like is not the wave of the future. The new generation of Star Trek lovers want new blood and the legends (actors) should stay as such by staying in the past.
By Mike at 11:51 AM ON 10/09/09
Watch the different series. The thing that changes is us. The series reflect their time. The stories aren't about people in the 23rd century. They're about us. In the TOS writers bible it stated that the good guys could do no wrong. No stories about anyone in Star Fleet doing something underhanded. This really ed off Harlan Ellison who wanted some abuse in "City on the Edge of Forever". All that has changed. The reboot could have all the old plots, or not, but they will, and should, end up being brand new because they are written for us, and not folks in 1967. So Mudd's women will not be passive Barbie dolls. Harlan can have his abuse (is he still alive?). The stories should naturely go in new directions.
By Mike at 11:56 AM ON 10/09/09
Interesting. Words for waste expiration and medicinal chemicals abused for recreational purposes are automatically deleted. Anyone come up with a set of replacements? Can we write "frak"? I always referred the original "foglecarb".
By Just Me at 12:01 PM ON 10/09/09
I thought this "wasn't your fathers Star Trek." Why then talk about retelling old Trek storylines like Khan and Mudd? If a new audience is what they are looking for maybe new stories, including new characters and adventures, should be what they write. You know retelling Khan's story, even if it is in an alternate universe, will generate huge arguments over canon among hard core Star Trek fans, and new audiences, if they do a little Netflix browsing, will perceive it as a remake.
By ShaneAwesome at 1:09 PM ON 10/09/09
@Marty B., awesome suggestion, lol. Whatever they do to this Star Trek sequel, they better make it as wicked, if not wickeder, than the first one. The last time I watched a movie and was so thrilled was when ROTJ came out back in 1983. And to be fair, I was 4 years old.
By jonodan at 1:42 PM ON 10/09/09
Although I enjoyed the new Star Trek movie for what it was... Frankly, I think this alternate timeline is a gimmick that won't go very far. Frankly, I'm surprises Gene Roddenberrys son hasn't been more critical of the revisions Hollywood is making to his vision and creation of a Star Trek universe. But as long as the money keeps rolling in, I guess I am in the minority here. Live long and prosper, Paramount..... financially.

By klitz0031 at 1:58 PM ON 10/09/09
i'm not too sure about time travel or alt time lines. In fact it gives me a rather annoying head ache thinking about trying to think about it. But if everything's been changed "Generations" may not even happened.
Kirk may not be dead . Poor Captain Picard may not have carried his large retired corpse to be buried atop of a mountain. And lets not get into an argument over why Picard didn't return with the cadaver and give Kirk a well deserved state funeral.
So in a nut shell it doesn't mater what happened in " Generations". Star trek 2009 cleaned the slate. With that said, Kirk Prime could of been standing besides Spock Prime watching Vulcan implode. So theres no excuse why he can't be in the next movie.
Story wise lets bring in Q in a " look what you lost " stint. Q can do the "Christmas Carol" theme without the Christmas. Or the Carol.
By Just Me at 2:30 PM ON 10/09/09
How about a spatial rift opened by the Romulans propels the Botany Bay into the Delta Quadrant where Khan ends up assimilating the Borg. Meanwhile, Kirk and the gang run into Harcourt Fenton Mudd, but are then thrown out to the Delta Quadrant by Q to see how they deal with the Korg (the Khan-Borg). Khan takes Mudd's women for his own, Mudd gains control of the Enterprise, but then Spock shows up, Red Matter in hand, to save the day!
By lostandconfused at 2:44 PM ON 10/09/09
I would actually like to see a movie with Q, or a Q, that would be so cool. They can always take the franchise in any direction, I would not mind seeing it carry on and we could see some missions that covered the span between the end of TOS and the very first movie. Oh, and I am fully in favor of giving Tyler Perry a bigger role. I can see it now. Uhura marries Spock, launching the sequel. Coming soon to a theater near you, Star Trek 2: Why Did I Get Married to that Mad Vulcan?
By Sheep Farm at 2:51 PM ON 10/09/09

By klitz0031 at 4:27 PM ON 10/09/09
Parallel timeline? So "generations" did happen, will happen, is going to happen but not in this time line? Theres that head ache again.
That just opens up a torrent of questions like:
Did the Enterprise E come back in time to stop the Borg from screwing up first contact? And if they did were they from the parallel future and did there actions created another parallel future?
If not, who stopped, whose going to stop the Borg from assimilate earth in the parallel past? And why isn't that in the next movie?
By Riceball at 5:34 PM ON 10/09/09

The Borg origins, and ending, has been done in timeline 1, at least. The same set of conditions that created the Borg might not exist in this timeline 2. I hope not. I've had enough of the Borg, Kirk and Kahn and Mudd, too. Let's do SOMETHING NEW in this Universe. THAT is what made the orginal ST so great !!!!!

i demand a reimagined ultra scary borg who detected their technology when the narada came to their timeline and went to investigate.. then we have a full blown war, and they wouldn't be super slow and dumb, they would be more irobot like agility,
and the klingons in my opinion need to be more predator like
they made the romulans not look lame, and had lots of unique aliens in the new movie

It is so easy to bring Kirk (Shatner) Back, in fact there is no need to even explain how he came back, all you need to do is have him reminisce about an earlier mission gone wrong, since vulcan was destroyed the whole gravitational shift thing had the nexus going somewhere else, in fact, Spock did not die therefore original Enterprise was not destroyed so, there was no ceremony on the so called Enterprise B in fact, the whole A, B thing has been altered. Finally Don't explain a damned thing Just let us know that Kirk Didn't die such a ridiculus death we will make up the rest

As much as I had GREAT fun in this reboot - - - Syfy did a piece that gave 9 "issues" that were inconsistencies that if averted would have made a better movie. I agreed with them but one was missing.
If the timeline was TRULY altered - - Spock Prime would have vanished at the pivotal moment of temporal completion.
The fact that Spock Prime is still "in the past" and viable suggests a "time loop" that he will have to go back to the past again sometime in the future. . . . OR am I missing something in "temporal mechanics" ??????

Why do a Nimoy and Shatner appearance mean that Spock and Kirk Prime are having to appear?
Couldn't the new adventure simply entail some "aging" of the crew (not a time travel story but some alien weapon or something) -- this would allow for the aged actors (Nimoy and Shatner) to have screen time together. It could be really funny to watch physically aged Kirk hitting on Uhura and being scolded by aged Spock while both are in sick bay being treated by the new McCoy - maybe a few weight jokes thrown in by McCoy or Spock to Kirk. Some red alert sounds and aged Kirk races to the bridge to save the moment (not the day, since the day saving is reserved for Quinto and Pine).

If by biggest you mean biggest budget I agree. The fact that Paramount gave Abrams, who had directed exactly ONE film before Star Trek and that was Mission Impossible III (UUGH!), 150 million, the highest budget of any Trek film is absolutely inexcusable. If however by biggest you mean best, Then I disagree vehemently. If you mean highest grossing, well the Trek films are scattered over a 30 year period and it’s difficult to figure that accounting for inflation and the like. I’ll leave that for someone who is better at math than I am. As far as complaining? Well as long as I keep disliking this movie, I’m going to complain.

~~i love the movie and jj should just not care about the hardcore fans of the crappy original show, they only account for 7% of the total movie sales..~~
You should also learn to capitalize your sentences. And you’re right again! JJ doesn’t care about the hardcore fans. He said himself this movie wasn’t for fans it was for non fans and it shows. 7%? Really where did you get that figure? Or did you just pull it out of your ass. I can do that too. How about this? “93% of the people who like this movie are twenty something air headed dweebs who don’t give a rats ass about Star Trek one way or another as long as they get their daily dose of entertainment and probably can‘t be bothered to read a book all the way through.” But I wouldn’t say something like that. It would be too insulting.

Things that normal people like. You mean like this movie? This badly written, annoyingly filmed waste of celluloid that is passing itself off as Star Trek? You know, there is something I liked about this movie, the special effects were cool. As long as this remains an open, public forum, I will not shut the hell up. I will continue to voice my dislike and disappointment over what JJ Abrams has done to Star Trek as long as Sci-Fi Wire continues to put up articles about it and I have access to a computer. So deal with it. Besides compare both of our previous posts and decide which one is more of an attack.

To Cosmic Voyager:
The Shatner co-authored novel, The Return, is not part of the official story lines acknowledged by the ST powers that be. They have said time and again they only recognize the people, places, things and events which occured in broadcast episodes and movies. Even Shatner did not have enough clout to get past that rule.
I have been a fan since 1967 of ST, in all of its incarnations. People love to bash different ones for different reasons, but I appreciated all of the casts and the stories they told on their own level.
That being said, I don't necessarily want to see they cross paths with old characters, or retell the same stories from a new perspective. There is so much room here to do something new, there is no need to revist the old.
Let's explore a strange new world. Let's seek out new life and new civilizations. Let's boldly go when the Trek Universe has never gone before.
By Steve at 5:34 PM ON 10/11/09
I'd love to see Shatner come back as the older "future" Captain Kirk. Since the timeline has been altered, Kirk no longer as to die in the awful and inappropriate way he did. I want to see Kirk married with a bunch of grandkids running around at his summer home on New Vulcan with Spock Prime. In fact, it would be great if you don't actually see who Kirk marries and Chris Pine can wonder who it is. He can also swear to start working out more. Could be a source of great comedy!

They should go with the Shatner "The Return" series, wherein Kirk comes back to life after being killed in "Generations" I like the first few books in the series, teaming Kirk with Pickard. Hey, it could work in a movie.

A reminder for true fans:
CBS now directly controls the Star Trek franchise, having done way with the last vestiges of Paramount involvement. And CBS says that there is no such thing as "Canonical Star Trek" any more. They feel free to dink around with the intellectual property they've inherited to any limit, perhaps far beyond what we've seen so far with JJ Abrams & Co.
All the talk from Abrams about the first film laying groundwork for a renewed franchise does make me bark bitter laughter. "Heavy lifting" huh; he must mean having all the once-official Star Trek consultants and archivists heaved over the transom before his film released. CBS shut down Startrek.com's editorial offices with no notice people, a month before Christmas 2008; the present website is frozen in time, still stuck with half-revised notices in the episode listings like the clocks that stop when an airliner crashes. Even the banner ads for the new film haven't been touched in months.
Star Trek is pretty much crashed-and-burned at the moment, with its titular ownership uninterested in active fan relations, its fanbase fenced in with cease-and-desist letters suppressing independent Web destinations, and clueless mainstream customers lapping up Abrams Trek like it was milk and honey.
Reminder for clueless mainstreamers: it's just matchmoved CGI kids! Yes they stretched a peacock skin over a sawdust turkey -- get over it!

I find it interesting that the purists are so vehemently against the reboot. We have TOS, with its glorious moments and its less than stellar ones. We have the original movies with their even awesomeness and their odd badness. We have the multiple later series that also had their good and bad episodes. And for every new movie, every new series, every time jump and every plot hole, there were letters written to complain about the atrocities done to what came before. Everyone burns out eventually, every show/franchise will jump the shark.
Now, I personally, was delighted by the reboot. Yes it had holes in it, not the least of which was that I kept waiting for Spock to vanish when the time traveling fell to rights. Or the Enterprise to break apart in the midst of the explosion at the end, for that matter. There were things about it that bugged me. But the first five minutes of the new film were incredibly moving, and overall, it was stunning to watch. Time travel is a staple of the franchise, and this particular version is no less ridiculous than the slingshot around the sun from IV. I think it was a brilliant way to generate new fans. While those of us born in a simpler, less glossy era have watched it develop and can appreciate the older stuff, we can also appreciate the potential of a completely new cast, if we look past our devotion to the passion and awesome if the old.
Nothing got ruined. It got re-imagined. And if you're really a fan of the franchise, I don't see how you can so completely reject that. Will I miss the Vulcans? Very much. So will the Federation, I'm quite sure. But so many stories remain to be told. The Vulcans will accept it, and either let their race die, or rebuild it. I'm excited to see what they're going to do with it.

John Turner said;
~~CBS now directly controls the Star Trek franchise, having done way with the last vestiges of Paramount involvement. And CBS says that there is no such thing as "Canonical Star Trek" any more. They feel free to dink around with the intellectual property they've inherited to any limit, perhaps far beyond what we've seen so far with JJ Abrams & Co.~~
I did not know all of this. If this is true then Star Trek truely is dead. Thank you very much ABC and JJ Abrams.
Trekgirl77,
You can like this movie all you want. I have no problem with that.
How can I so comletely reject it. Because Abrams took Star Trek and ripped the heart out of it. He destroyed the planet Vulcan which was one of THE iconic elements of Star Trek. One of the founding worlds of the federation and the source of many of the stories that define Star Trek. I ask you, what purpose did Viulcans destruction serve in this movie? In what way did it further the story? The only thing I can come with, the ONLY thing was making young Spock emotionaly compromised and that could have been shown in other ways. He changed Kirk from an brash, motivated young man inpired by his fathers example to try and make a difference by joining starfleet into a spoiled, egotistical, arrogant blowhard who had to be dared into joining by someone he had just met.
I don't like it, I will never like it.
I will not buy the DVD and I have no entention of seeing the sequel If Abrams, Orcii and Kurtzman are involved.
I will continue to say so as long as people continue to gush over how "AHWSAAHM!" it is.
When there are people that say "You know I always hated Star Trek until I saw THIS movie! It's totally rad!" Then how good of a Star Trek movie can it be?

Okay, for a moment, lets put aside the "I love the new Star Trek / I hate the new Star Trek" arguments and just dwell on what has been changed in this new alternate timeline.
It seems that the crew of the Enterprise is already on their new ship. None of them will have served on another one. Kirk will never be on the Farragut, eliminating a couple of the original episodes right there. Spock doesn't serve with Captain Pike for many years before serving with Kirk (after all, the Enterprise is new now) so we don't have to worry about 'The Menagerie'. Vulcan is gone so there goes a few key episodes right there.
Without going more and more into it, it would seem that the best way to go about a sequel would be to almost ignore any of the original episodes. The timeline has changed,. The Enterprise isn't already twenty years old by the time Kirk and crew start having adventures on it. All of them are altered as well, given their circumstances. I would imagine that none of the old original episodes could be transplanted to this new crew and ship. Things are too different.
The Original Series, TNG, DS9 and Voyager are all in Universe A (and alternate A for some episodes) and this new Star Trek is in Unverse B. I think they have to let it stay separate or it may just come apart at the seems.
And yes, I'm a Trek Fan, so flame away if necessary

Meh on the Shatner thing- I think if he will act WELL and not like an ADHD-addled two-year-old, he should be in it. Yes, he has a big ego, but he is also a vital part of the franchise and he should be allowed (encouraged?) to be in the movie.
I'm a teenage female TOS fan and I loved the new movie (admit it, Quinto's hot). In fact, the movie inspired me to go back and watch TOS. I am a nerd, and proud to be. All you alcohol and 59-fifty-addled jerks should really learn to do something productive with your time. Like learning to read, type, and count properly. Or maybe tying your shoes would be an easier goal.
and @Spaceman Spiff? Yeah, you. Maybe before you go around criticizing idiots' grammar and spelling you should learn some yourself. Just saying.

Earth to the empty suits! We DON'T want to see this new YOUNG cast do the Classic missions. We WANT to see the time line restored, and a new story from DS9 forward. But no, you can't think of one, so let's throw everything away and start over.
Trek is as dead as it gets.
