What Ridley Scott's Alien prequel will be and won't be

What Ridley Scott\'s \<i\>Alien\<\/i\> prequel will be and won\'t be

Alien director Ridley Scott has talked more about the proposed prequel movie he'll be directing, and it's not what you expect.

No, it won't deal with the backstory to that giant alien ship on LV-426 that the crew of the Nostromo discovers in Scott's 1979 original movie. Rather, it'll be something new, Scott told Empire magazine:

"It's a brand new box of tricks," said Sir Ridley. "We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It's very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior."

The script, by Jon Spaihts, will center on humans in some way. Not really clear how it'll fit into the series' mythology, but we're sure it'll be something.

"I never thought I'd look forward to a sequel," said Sir Ridley. "But a prequel is kind of interesting. I'm looking forward to doing that."

Maybe this movie will serve as a bridge between Alien and AvP

By alien at 2:31 PM ON 10/30/09

Don't forget, The Company had the Nostromo set down on LV-426. This may deal with how The Company found out about the aliens and their search for a specimen. Or, maybe not their first specimen, but another.

No Predator. Please. I like the fun house of the Alien jumping out of shadows like the 1st Alien. Liked Cameron's besieged fortress take on the second. But no Predator. Please. The whole Predator thing takes the creepiness & dread out of the Alien as much as the running zombies took the creepiness and dread from flesh eating ghouls.

I can't see Ridley Scott using his movie to support a cheesy video game franchise like AvP. Hopefully he'll bring it back to basics and remind us all why Alien was terrifying in the first place.

By Melora at 3:20 PM ON 10/30/09

Scott's being a bit too vague about this, but perhaps nothing is set in stone yet. If what he says follows through, the story will likely be how the Company came to find out about the ship of alien eggs on LV426 in the first place.

Rather than bridge the gap between AVP and the original Alien, I'm hoping that this prequel will actually cut the appalling AVP films out of established Alien canon altogether.

Ridley Scott should have left this alone.

I'm not saying that the movie shouldn't be made; there are plenty of talented directors out there (of slightly less stature than RS) who are capable of serving up a more than passable episode in the Alien(s) franchise. But that's all it is. It's Alien 5, or Alien -1, however you'd care to look at it.

I hope against hope that he'll pull off something special seeing as he's committed to doing it - but people like Scott should be bringing us something new, leaving the sequels to talented up-and-comers.

Hmm...

This prequel might deal with the discovery of a lone Alien on another planet and once the Company becomes aware of what they are they send the Nostromo to LV to retrieve more like him.

Someone's not paying attention. The AvP movies WERE the prequel to Alien.

By Michael Sacal at 4:37 PM ON 10/30/09

This could be a direct prequel that ignores the events of the team up and focuses more on answering the question of how the Company knew about the derelic alien ship full of Alien eggs.

By PhoenixPhell at 4:45 PM ON 10/30/09

Whoever said that the AVP franchise was just some crap video games, it is not. The Alien and Predator series were tied together in a series of books and many many comics, and honestly its all about the fans choosing which parts of the stories we want to believe are part of the universe or not. I know some people who totally cut out Alien 3 and 4 in their take on the story, and Predator fans who cut out the pred books (not the avp ones, though they might have) so yeah its up to us to decide.

While the AVP movies *did* take place before the Alien movies, I wouldn't personally lump them into the prequel category. In several of the Alien books I've read (not canon?) Weyland-Yetani if I'm spelling it right were in cahoots with the Alien that crash landed on LV-426...some great reading if you can't get enough of the Alien universe.

Did he say anything in that article about what this movie is about?? All I got was, its prequel, its not about anything we saw in the original movies, its about aliens, its not about aliens. Thanks Ridley, really explained a lot. Now go reinvent the wheel and stop wasting our time with vague press releases.

By Dreugan at 3:22 PM ON 10/31/09

I can tell you one thing - Ridley Scott should be totally ignoring the AvP franchise - which is a good thing.

By Maltheus at 8:15 AM ON 11/01/09

Enough with the ADD. Just do The Forever War already. That story blows away any possible "Aliens" concept.

The didn't go looking for the ship on LV-426 and when newts parents found it they didn't know there were aliens.

The Alien universe timeline is all messed up. Why not have a human ship enter a time rift and crash on the Aliens Original Homeworld. After a battle the ship from LV-426 rescues them and they find out about aliens on board too late. On the way to Earth (to return the rescuees to their home planet) the ship is lost on LV-426 and the Alien Queen starts laying eggs as she succumbs to the environment on that moon. The final shot could be of the Egg chamber full and the pilot dead.

Predators and aliens have been established on Earth since prehistory (AVP). It was suggested that the predators were using aliens as a battle game during prehistory and that this battle game has been going on up to current history (AVP) (AVPR). W-Y corp individuals were around during this timeframe (AVP) (AVPR)(W-Y satellite in orbit over antarctica). Earth knew about both Predators and Aliens prior to the origianl movie(Bishop in AVP and Yatanni in AVPR) (US Military in AVPR) (Auto respond to distress signal in Alien) "We checked out LV-426, There has been a colony on it for 20 years" (Aliens) Mother tried to retrieve an alien sample(Alien). Us special ops team knew about the Predator from the files of the episode in the jungle(Predator and Predator2). Predator had an alien skull on display in their ship(Predator2).

If you look at all the skulls from the Predator ship in predator2 there is a few other creatures that could be used as hosts for the predator/alien battle games. A movie that features the predators transporting humans to another world to act as a third element in these games might prove to be a good story line.
Time travel must be incorporated to the two universes to repair the inconsistencies in the timelines. I get the feeling that there is a link missing from the two universes and a story arc that repairs that issue would be the smartest thing hollyrock could do.

That actually sounds pretty interesting.

Alternate timelines? Time rifts? What the f*** is this - JJ Abrams "Alien Trek"?

NO THANK YOU.

By 3456 at 1:37 PM ON 11/03/09

I might not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but I am not sure what Mr. Scott is trying to achieve artistically in this prequel. Honestly, I would rather see a sequel with Sig. Weever that takes them to the alien world to find out who or what they really are. Case in point, were they some form of biological weapon made by some advanced alien race for use against their enemies, where their own weapon/creation turned against them etc...?

No backstory to LV-426? What exactly are you filling in then, if not the original Alien movie? I am not convinced the "Company" knew about the existence of the aliens on the derelic ship as envisioned in the original 1979 movie, but I do see some very weak and subtle points that *could* point to that conclusion.
