Will a Millennium movie happen without Chris Carter?

Will a \<i\>Millennium\<\/i\> movie happen without Chris Carter?

Lance Henriksen, the veteran sci-fi character actor perhaps best known for playing former FBI profiler Frank Black in the '90s TV series Millennium, has been talking about a feature-film follow-up/sequel for years and has reportedly been approached by investors interested in mounting an independent production, though Fox owns the rights.

Now comes news, via ScreenRant, that Fox itself may be considering a new independent movie based on the Chris-Carter-created show, with Henriksen but without Carter (who also created The X-Files and co-wrote and directed last year's flop The X-Files: I Want to Believe).

I have heard rumblings that Fox are interested in bringing Millennium back to screens—possibly without the involvement of Chris Carter—and this independent route would seem like a way of doing so. It's also believed that the studio intends to make another X-Files film, and again it's possible that Carter won't be involved ... .

Now, be aware that this is speculation, but also something that I have heard through the grapevine, so there might be some truth to it.

Fans recall that the show, which aired on Fox 1996-'99, centered on Black, a former FBI investigator with a history of mental issues, who is recruited by the mysterious Millennium Group, a private group of former law-enforcement personnel who investigate crimes of the supernatural but whose true agenda remained murky and had something to do with the coming millennial year (2000, though the actual new millennium kicked off in 2001).

The show had a rocky creative history, owing to changing executive producers (Carter, then former X-Files writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, then Carter again), network interference and a rambling and at times incoherent mythology. The show was canceled before it could wrap up; a 1999 episode of The X-Files, titled "Millennium," brought back Henriksen as Black to put a coda on the Millennium TV series.

ScreenRant suggests that a new independent Millennium movie would be spearheaded by filmmaker Brett A. Hart, who directed Henriksen in the indie feature Bone Dry:

I spoke with Hart who had this to say about the project:

"As a tremendous admirer of "The Millennium Series" I'm of course very intrigued by the recent rumors that there may indeed be a full length feature on the horizon. If any one can get "Millennium" made it's Lance, and it's been a long time coming. It's time to give the fans what they've been patiently waiting to see... More insight into the aberrant world of Frank Black ... while further elevating and merging storylines, characterization and visuals... and finally closure for one of the finest series ever created. Let's hope as the title sequence suggest "The Time is near" ... and as I've already publicly stated ... my passion and conviction for the series is so deep that I'd direct "Millennium—The Movie" for free just to see it on the big screen."

Not sure how a movie would work: The millennial changeover has come and gone, and basing a film on that would be kind of like calling a movie "Y2K." But Henriksen remains a great screen presence, and it would be nice to see him glowering as Frank Black one last time.

The season two finale remains one of my most favorite finales of any series ever (with a fantastic dialogue-free sequence depicting one characters mental collapse under the weight of being inducted into the Millennium Group), and it's a shame that when Carter returned to helm season three, he completely gutted it to be and mean next to nothing.

Loved Millennium, hated what they did on X-files with it. I think they could go the whole 2012 route!

This would be awesome...and I'm not the least bit upset that Carter may not be involved. Don't get me wrong...he deserves creative credit (and in some cases blame) for what The X-Files and Millennium became, but his feature film track record hasn't been the greatest.

Handing the reigns over to somebody new may just be what the doctor ordered for both franchises.

Frank Black is the bomb!!! However, I'm not sure making a Millenium without Chris Carter is a good idea. His insight into the character of Frank Black far exceeded anything he did on X-files. I'd rather see Chris Carter on Millenium than watch another X-files.

No way. Chris Carter conceived of Millennium in all its subtle exploration of the darker side of human nature. If you watch the Season 1 special features, you realize how much he defined about the show -- right down to his lack of hand gestures and his clothing. He was very upset at Morgan and Wong's childish turn of the show toward the supernatural and has long expressed a desire to return the format to its Season 1 roots if a film were to be made. The problem is whether Fox will allow it. That's all.

Buy Season 1, all you non-Millennium fans; it's as good as any single season of The X-Files. Just brilliant. It's also wonderful how the show shows these criminals as human beings who feel guilty but are unable to stop themselves. This is closer to the truth about serial killers; they're not simply malevolent maniacs as most film depicts them, but very anguished and emotionally distraught human beings, who've been tortured in their youth.

This is an important and thoroughly entertaining series.

The X-Files without Chris Carter would be like... well, frankly, the first four seasons of The X-Files, (or the best episodes of Fringe). Let's face it, when Morgan & Wong ran that show, it was top-flight genre fare. When Carter asserted his "creative control", yikes. Fox: Let Morgan and Wong produce a Darin Morgan X-Files script. Get Brad Anderson to direct. Trust me on this one.

By Muldfeld at 12:24 AM ON 10/14/09

I would remind people that Fox wanted Millennium to become progressively like The X-Files in Seasons 2 and 3; the show was stripped of all its originality without Chris Carter's approval.

It was Fox that killed this franchise, not Chris Carter. I can understand a film being done with some artistic supervision -- though I don't trust Fox to ever make things better -- but there's no way I'll accept a film without Chris Carter's involvement. The guy rewrote every script in Season 1, I think. He HAS to be involved. Otherwise, it'll suck.

I don't mean to be rude, Sean Coffee, but Chris Carter wrote or rewrote 20 of 24 episodes of Season 3 of The X-Files. Morgan and Wong had full creative reign on Season 2 of Millennium and completely ruined it. They turned a subtle show into a conspiracy-ridden, childish, melodramatic piece of crap with characters proving their heroism by engaging in self-sacrifice. Not psychologically realistic at all. They also weren't there for Season 3 of The X-Files; baby brother Darin Morgan is a prodigy in places, though; his were the only X-Files scripts Carter didn't try to rewrite and his Season 2 Millennium episodes explored mature subject matter with real innovativeness and humor.

Morgan and Wong's stories are shown for their superficial formula in Season 2 of Millennium. They only care about shock factor and, for those criticizing X-Files 2, take a look at Morgan and Wong's film work like "The One" and "Final Destination"; I've barely seen any of it and can tell it's a joke. Even Lance Henriksen didn't like what the show became without Carter's strong influence.

Carter was just creatively tired of running a show constantly and I agree that it begins to show in The X-Files Season 5, but he still did some great work through Season 8. "Essence" is better than anything Morgan and Wong have done. Wong and Morgan do deserve credit for "Beyond the Sea", though. However, J.J. Abrams and his Transformers writers Orci and Kurtzman are just atrocious. Where X-Files was subtle in its fright factor and tension laden with great writing, "Fringe" hits you over the head with gross out scenes that just make you want to turn away and annoy you with bad and cheesy comedy. For that kind of over-the-top humor, Whedon is the master, though my favorite has to be Carter's more subtle stuff.

Think what you want Muldfield, but Millennium season 2 is onf the greatest seasons ever produced for any television show. The maturity of it put nearly all X-Files seasons to shame in its brilliance (which actually were childish, but entertaining nearly all of the time).

When Carter came back for season 3, he took a monstrous dump on what had become a fabulous show and flushed it down the crapper (with Hugo's soul for you Misties out there). Chris Carter seems like a genuinely nice person, but based on his writing, he seems very much like a big manchild.

I agree that if Morgan & Wong were allowed to do what they wanted, it would be amazing. Maybe bring back the Mikaido. :)

The message I read here is, Chris Carter botched something that should have been unbotchable. He screwed the pooch and is no longer welcome near the kennel, so far as production money is concerned. Sorry Chris.

Put me in the Second Season was best camp. I liked the first season, loved the second season and totally bounced on the third season.

A post Millennium Millennium group could be interesting. 2012 is coming and what is the next big end of the universe date after that?

By Marty B. at 8:01 AM ON 10/14/09

I think they should do it as buddy movie between Frank Black and Frank Black from the Pixies. Soundtrack would be easy at least.

I liked the Jose Chung Millenium episode, and "The Devil Made Me Do It" might have been the best show Fox ever aired. Don't know where they fell in the series/seasons.

By superfly at 8:24 AM ON 10/14/09

Season 2 of Millenium was total garbage!!! Morgan and Wong can't write anything coherent and destroyed Frank Black's family life. Season one stays true to the original concept of Millenium, where everything after was unwatchable.

By danjack at 8:56 AM ON 10/14/09

Season one was decent. Season 2 was brilliant (and coherent if you can understand the stories). Season 3 was subpar horse crap where Frank became a back ground character.

By strider at 9:20 AM ON 10/14/09

I would love to see this happen. How many of the original cast would they be able to bring back? I am as big a fan of Terry O'quin as I am of Lance. And we really dont know if that was Terry behind that desk

I guess this means the Owls had it right.

danjack, rewatch Season 1! Back in high school, I thought Season 2 was better as well, but seeing things on DVD changed my mind. Season 1 was subtle and entirely different in its themes from The X-Files.

Season 2 was Fox exerting its control over the show and it choose Morgan and Wong. They turned the Millennium group into a world-wide conspiracy. They cast porn star Ashlyn Gere, who acted TERRIBLY. Carter hadn't been involved at all, except for choosing Michael R. Perry to try to keep some influence over keeping the show to its original concept. Michael Perry wrote "The Mikado", which was totally awesome BECAUSE it adhered to Season 1 writing. He and the other writers discuss how Morgan and Wong ruined things on the DVD for Season 2.

Then, Fox demanded that the show be made even more like The X-Files. Carter didn't understand or like what Morgan and Wong did, but wanted to maintain some continuity, so he was forced to make Season 3 follow what they'd done and he was forced to make Frank Black join the FBI and have a female partner. I totally agree that Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz' episodes were lousy that year -- just awful, but they were tired by that point (X-Files' 6th season). However, look back at their work in Season 1 and it's incredible! They were forced to change the concept for Season 3 due to Morgan and Wong and Fox's interference and I'm sure that affected things, too. Fox always felt Season 1 was too disturbing, but it was amazing. Seriously, check it out again.

By Muldfeld at 4:44 PM ON 10/14/09

I should clarify that there were 2 writing teams for Season 2; one headed by Morgan and Wong, in which case they wrote every episode, and the other, headed by Michael Perry, who was hired by Chris Carter to maintain some semblance of his vision. I thought the Erin something and another writer's Christmas episode was pretty good. Oh yeah, the Kristen Cloke character was Morgan and Wong's work, too, because she was Glen Morgan's wife; I got so sick of hearing her get all emotional about her gift; also Peter Watts talk about his ridiculous deal with God to have a boy; they also made Catherine a bitch by having her moral code so unrealistically strict that she fell out of love with Frank for killing her kidnapper. And how about the silly way the Millennium Group talked to one another. And don't even get me started on the Nazi group.

By Smiley at 12:10 PM ON 10/15/09

You know, all 3 seasons were good IMO. It was easy to see how each one took drastically different directions, but I could find something to like about nearly every episode (except maybe the Jose Chung one - didn't even like seeing that character in the X-Files) and would love to see some sort of incarnation on the big screen. The show may have been originally conceived by Carter, but that doesn't mean new talent couldn't possibly improve upon the groundwork that has been laid.

My only fear is that a movie would end up like the X-Files movies to date - mostly disappointing and not nearly as good as the TV show.

Yeah sorry chris carter but the whole ode to pedophiles that was the last x-files film was just a freaking mess. Hell I sincerely believe uwe boll couldve made a better x-files sequel. Imagine that. Please dont let this guy do any more harm to either franchise. Thanks.
