Will Charlize Theron be the next Mad Max?

Will Charlize Theron be the next \<i\>Mad Max\<\/i\>?

The Australian outback is pretty darned hot. But it will get a lot hotter if director George Miller has his way.

E! News reports rumors that Oscar-winner Charlize Theron will star in the fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise.

That's the good news. Here's the bad news:

When he announced that he would begin work on the sequel back in 2007, Miller admitted Gibson was too old for the antihero role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky, and said, "I don't think he would be interested in being involved at all."

Charlize in pleather, kicking ass? Sign us up! But it's mind-boggling that anyone could conceive of the franchise without Mel Gibson.

Miller is also considering British actor Tom Hardy (Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers) to co-star, opposite Theron.

Miller is keeping everything a secret, though, going so far as to only give auditioning actors a letter of their character's name. No formal offers have been made.

The editing on this piece isn't.

On one hand, if Gibson isn't in it then I truly might like it better if the main character was a female to better disassociate the two versions. Seriously. On the other, if they're making the character female then they might as well call it something completely different.

While a remake is an interesting concept, like Indiana Jones I'd rather see a "years later" movie with the older Gibson.

Surely it would be Mad Maxine then? :)

I actually agree that Gibson would be the wrong choice to star, except maybe they'll have him do a cameo as "Old Max" who sits on his radiation soaked porch yelling at the young punks to "Get off the sun-baked dirt!". Or perhaps they'll have him traveling to Apocyclypse-ravaged Israel in search of "those who done him wrong"... hmmm, better not go there. :)

I always thought that the Mad Max world would make a great videogame though; so many have copied the apocalyptic wasteland-punk-battling cars world you might as well make it a game and a MMORPG one at that.

Also a comic book called "Rockatansky: The Adventures of Max" was something I always toyed with.

If they make Mad Max 4 I have just one other request other than seeing Charlize in black pleather and silver studs. They need to find another Dog. The blue heeler in Mad Max 2 named 'Dog' was the coolest hound in the wasteland. No Mad Max sequel will be complete without 'Dog'.

no, no,no,no a thousand times NO! i wont say i was a fan of mad max , yes i watched em sveral times growing up. but if u change out mel u have actually cut all ties to previous efforts. there is NOTHING left. his car was destroyed the last of the interceptors, dogs dead and mel...well with out mel what do u have left? another post apopalytic film. if thats what you want to make, thats great but it is not a mad max film. conceptually u have a bare bones plot at least in the last 2 flicks. people went to see max and the bizzaro universe that his world devolved into. theres alot of ideas out there for more well done P.A. type flicks research, gather your cash for special affects and go for it but leave max alone in ourmemories.

If she's cast in this role won't she look a bit like she did in Æon Flux?...not too crazy about that.

She's a cool actress though, and although I'd prefer Mel as Mad Max I'd happily settle for Charlize if the alternative is no Mel Gibson.

Btw, I was surprised to see Mel Gibson acting in a new movie, Edge of Darkness. I thought he only wanted direct and not act from now on?

...but what I dont get is;

Not the first time I've read that, but what about fuck!ng asking him instead of keep guessing what he'll say? - he's had enough time. *sigh*

This would just be dumb to call it mad max without mad max. If the role was going to be for a woman they would have called it mad maxine. And as far as Med Gibson playing or not playing the role. I feel that he should, even if were as a cameo and they could name the movie something else other than mad max like they did with the road warrior. I for one will be a hugely disappointed fan of the franchise if he doesn't have at least some part in the film. If not, then I would like to see some kind of kindred spirit partnership and mentoring going on. Have her be an MFP that patrols Anarchy road.

Aw, come on! It won't be Mad Max if Mad Max isn't actually in it! And Mel Gibson is Mad Max. It's that simple, really. At least to me.

What's pleather?

Does it make men horny?

I could see the female lead if the kill off the original Max in the opening scenes. "Old" Max (Gibson) making a small cameo at the beginning - his character finally at peace with life in the wasteland - a daughter-like character there as witness to his brutal killing. This leading her on a revenge quest ala the original film's motivation for Max. I would prefer them to not kill Max, though, perhaps take him hostage and leave him alone and more damaged at the end of the film...his character was always about him being a sponge for all the wrongs of the world - he would soak them up to keep the rest of us safe - this would entail more than one shooting day for a Gibson cameo, though.

Someone doesn't know their Mad Max films...it's "Two men enter, one man leaves!"

Nothing about a chick in pleather.

By Red Mask at 11:02 PM ON 10/23/09

If this film is better than Terminator: Salvation I'll go for it! Just don't have a cameo of Gibson blaming the Jews for anything!

By joebags at 9:22 AM ON 10/26/09

Craig Parker has to be in this!

By sshrul at 10:32 AM ON 10/26/09

The best thing for Mel Gibson to do in his Career rate now is to do a Mad Max movie I said that after the incident he should have went rate into doing a Mad Max movie Those were the movies that made him I understand why he doesn't want to go back that way, But if he just think about it it would be the best move rate now.

By gatelady at 11:03 AM ON 10/26/09

A girl "Max" would be dumb. I like the Craig Parker idea though (as he already works "down under". He is terrific as the bad guy, Darken Rahl, on Legend of the Seeker. He can play smooth evil very well, but he was a sexy elf in LOTR too. I don't care if Gibson is in this or not. Look at the Batman films - they have changed the main actor several times and it has worked.
