It looks like someone was paying attention to the thread yesterday about the SciFi Wire being a bit chauvinist and juvenile. I'm not sure they got it right, but at least they tried.

By Science Fiction at 10:18 AM ON 11/12/09

In what universe does this have anything to do with Science Fiction?
If I wanted to look at sexy pictures, I am sure I could find a couple of sites to do that on.

The amount of "puff" pieces on this site used to be a small percentage but recently it is getting pretty high. I think I will start using another site for my Science Fiction news.

By jdmimic at 10:27 AM ON 11/12/09

Well, at least they put 5 guys in with the list of 20 women. Somehow, I don't think that is really going to satisfy the people that have been complaining that Sci Fi Wire has gotten puerile and sexist. And with this blog post, I can't say as I blame them. Come on, guys, this is a really trash piece with no class. Surely you can do better than this. What's next? The Sci Fi Nudie Show? You going to start showing Flesh Gordon? Everybody do the Limbo, How Low Can You Go?
I don't mind these sorts of articles sometimes, but they have gotten out of hand. Maybe you could put them in a separate thread, Sci Fi Image perhaps?

By MCP-001 at 10:29 AM ON 11/12/09

Isn't there a federal law regarding websites making inappropriate material (i.e. porn) available to minors?

Considering the amount of material that has been posted as of late, I'm surprised that this site hasn't been cited yet?

By RangerPrimeX at 10:31 AM ON 11/12/09

Yeah, it may be a puff piece but it does show sci-fi (although some are loosely sci-fi) actors/actresses getting covers on mainstream mags which is get exposure for the genre. No problem having a fun piece once in awhile.

By Captain Kibble at 10:39 AM ON 11/12/09

Try again, this time only pick covers where the subjects aren't airbrushed to the point they look like all CGI aliens from the new Doctor Who series.

By Tubes at 10:48 AM ON 11/12/09

This website is really starting to s**k!

By GAVAL at 11:08 AM ON 11/12/09

Bewbs for the win.

Keep em coming! This site is about Science Fiction and fantasy related entertainment and sex is entertaining. These actors have all played major characters in science fiction movies and television shows. How can you not see the relationship?

You know what the article is about so skip it if it won't entertain you instead of being a lemming and whining about something you can't control and aren't obligated to take part in.

Also, moar bewbs plskthx!

By Wombat at 11:09 AM ON 11/12/09

In response to those complaining about this article...

Was the title that misleading? You clam this isn't the kind of stuff you want to "read", yet you obviously clicked on the link and took enough time to scroll to the bottom of the page to leave your comments. You realize that the more hits they get for pages like this, the more they're going to do right?

If you don't want to look at this stuff there's a simple solution...don't. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to look at it. Just don't click on any link with the words "hottest", "sexiest", "girls" or "guys" in them.

Yes, you have the right to your opinion of 'I don't like this so i'm not gonna look at it'...that's cool. But your posts make it sound more like your stand is, 'I don't like this so no one should be allowed to look at it.' - and that is why I'm responding.

By sparrowlord01 at 11:13 AM ON 11/12/09

They forgot one of the biggest hotties in Scifi.. What about Jessica Alba?

By DerelictZombie at 11:17 AM ON 11/12/09

Oh man, now they are adding dudes, it was fine when it was just girls..I quite enjoyed it. I agree with the comment above, click on the articles you think you will like not the ones you know are gonna upset you.

By GAVAL at 11:19 AM ON 11/12/09

Good call, Sparrow. Alba's been in ghost stories and played a major comic book charachter...who frequently had to get naked to use her powers effectively (invisible girl).

I don't reckognize Diora Baird. Who is she? Was she in the new Trek or something? They should have put some captions explaining the ties to science fiction in some of these...

Also, while I do enjoy occasional articles like this, I would like to see a NSFW warning on stuff like this for those who aren't self-employed and might get burned on their coffee break checking out Tricia Helfer's arse.

By GlowGoBoy at 11:23 AM ON 11/12/09

@DerelictZombie - If seeing a few covers of guys, only three of them shirtless makes you enjoy the girl pictures less...then you have some major issues. Hell, I'm GAY and I can appreciate the beautiful women of sci-fi. Perhaps you either have underlying issues or you're just jealous of these guys' physique. If that's the case, get to the gym, dude.

By Gwinna at 11:43 AM ON 11/12/09

I see one sci-fi related item above (Rolling Stone). The others a just a bunch of mostly women in lingerie, who have at some point played a part in a sci-fi movie or show. Isn't that stretching the idea a bit? Was this really worth publishing to the masses? What is "new" about this?

By Eva at 11:44 AM ON 11/12/09

Yesterday ladies were asking for sexy men to accompany the hot ladies posted in the various articles and voila! today we got 'em. :) *fans herself*

Thanks for listening to your readers, Scifiwire. Sadly though "Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain." ~Lily Tomlin

P.S. Grace Park and Angelina Jolie look yummy, too!

By Iis4island at 11:53 AM ON 11/12/09

At least use pictures that are associated with the science fiction roles they played! Skin is fine with me -- I believe that we should all appreciate the work these actors and their handlers put into looking good for us, but the least you could do is make some type of genre effort.

Seriously, SciFi Wire, hire some adults. And while your at it, hire a woman. Just hire someone who isn't a 15-year-old white male!

By BlessedBlogger at 11:54 AM ON 11/12/09

::yawn::

I read SciFi Wire for news about upcoming scifi/fantasy/horror shows, movies, music, comic books, graphic novels, video games, books, cons, merchandise etc. Not fluff pieces. Come on SFW, you're driving your female readers away and likely some of your male readers as well. Is this site run by 15 year old high school boys? All the misspellings, shoddy editing, rumors, celebrity gossip, softcore porn and one-sided rants makes it feel like it is. I'm not saying it's all bad, just that there's room for improvement.

By Iis4island at 11:56 AM ON 11/12/09

Oh, and one other thing -- you need to add Taylor Lautner's Dec. Men's Health cover. I think that it is particularly important that we support the younger generation in their efforts to keep us all entertained. ;)

By KatsuKaze at 12:00 PM ON 11/12/09

So is Cameron Diaz on this list because she did that crappy box movie? I don't think you should count Shrek because she only did voice over work.

By Bilge at 12:04 PM ON 11/12/09

Rachel Bilson's anatomy.

That's Science Fiction.

By tj900 at 12:17 PM ON 11/12/09

Wow. I never realized what a bunch of self righteous prudes there are posting here.

God bless sexy pictures!
God bless airbrushing!
God bless scifiwire!

This will be my one and only post on the subject. I didn't come here to argue, I clicked on that link to see sexy pictures because that's what the title said. I was not disappointed.

By MJPollard at 12:45 PM ON 11/12/09

I really feel for the people complaining about this article. After all, it must be a frightening experience having a gun held to your head and being forced to click on the link to this article.

Hello! Just exactly what part of "25 of the hottest sci-fi cover girls and guys" did you not understand? And with three examples on the main page, even? Jesus H. Christ on a warp-powered pogo stick! If you disapprove of articles like this, then don't read them, but if you already have an idea what the article is going to be about and then CLICK ON THE LINK ANYWAY, well, you have no one to blame but yourself (and, frankly, I'm of the opinion that you've forfeited any right to complain).

By daj at 12:49 PM ON 11/12/09

That Ryan Reynolds cover is crazy hot. Still have the issue next to my living room table.

Surprised Justin Timberlake's famous Rolling Stone cover/photo spread wasn't listed. Still have that one, too.

By cogadh at 12:53 PM ON 11/12/09

I'm shocked at the level of prudishness displayed here. You call that porn? C'mon, this is the internet, do you have any idea how much real porn is available for free on the internet? Go complain about that, not a bunch of harmless pin-up pictures. So its a fluff piece, big deal. This is an entertainment news website, technically everything here is a "fluff piece". You want hard news, go to CNN.com. Most importantly, you don't like it, don't bother clicking on the link. Go suck all the fun out of some other website, you're all obviously way too full of your own self-righteousness to enjoy being here.

By a different tim at 1:06 PM ON 11/12/09

I can just imagine what the staff was thinking when they posted this "that ought to shut'em up" thanks for putting Jennifer Love Hewitt on this list. She is downright beautiful.

By rts2020 at 1:10 PM ON 11/12/09

The cover with Diora Baird said she was from Star Trek. I don'r recognise her of the name. What Trek was she in and who did she play? I looked on her web sites and they do not mention Star Trek in her list of work.

By AngryJonny at 1:15 PM ON 11/12/09

Hey, I, for one, am NOT complaining any, Sci Fi Wire! And I think you said it perfectly, cogadh.

I actually bought that issue of Playboy just for Tricia Helfer (NOT the articles). She's amazingly beautiful (and Canadian!) and the photography by Sante D'Orazio was terrific. Cute butt-crack, too.

By jdmimic at 1:42 PM ON 11/12/09

Sigh. No, the title was not misleading. I knew exactly what it was about when I clicked on it. But commenting on it did require me to click on it. I am not being prudish. I have nothing against pictures of scantily clad women. I have no desire to have Sci Fi Wire censor or prevent anyone from seeing these sorts of pictures.
No, I do not consider this porn. I was merely commenting on the level that the staff has sunk to draw in the lowest common denominator and asking just how far down this line do they want to go.
Yes, I carried it to an extreme to make my point. Ordinarily, I would say perhaps I went too far, but with comments like "Bewbs!", I think maybe not.

I do think that too many of the blog posts here are in this vein and pander to the Kewl, bewbs! mentality. I would like more actual news, more articles that are more interesting to my big head than my little head.

For instance, I really liked the Asimov article. That was great. I like the news bits about new movies in development. Even though I am not a big Doctorow fan, I thought that articles with authors was great. I was glad to read the Roddenberry news. Even though I thought the last article from McCarthy was rather fluffy, it was at least thought-provoking and if I don't agree with him all the time, his articles are always interesting to read. These are the sorts of things I come here for. And it is precisely this sort of thing that has decreased lately in favor of bewbs. We get articles about Twilight's threeway. I can get pictures of naked and semi-naked women anywhere. Good science fiction news is harder to come by. Is this so much to ask?

By IbeatYouupinHighSchool at 2:02 PM ON 11/12/09

Look nerds. Sci Fi gave you all what you needed...something to milk the monkey to since you can't get laid. Shut up and enjoy.

By Nutamu at 2:07 PM ON 11/12/09

Are the occasional guys thrown in there as spacers or something? I think this list is a little unbalanced but hey whatever. It's not like there was any actual content to this article anyway. I'm just surprised there's any writing on this at all (hidden way at the top lol for those who didn't notice).
Nice try even if the attempt did crash and burn somewhat.

By Death at 2:36 PM ON 11/12/09

After reading recent comments Im starting to think that my fellow Sci-Fi geeks are prudes too. Seriously? 14 girls 4 guys (say in whiney voice.). The over-analyzing is VERY Sci-Fi geek. But the recent prudish, right wing sounding crowd on here? Not!

By oh not again at 2:38 PM ON 11/12/09

... photoshop fail one more time... or else Rachel Bilson's legs are definitely weird.

And SERIOUSLY is that the best you could do on the man's department??????

By MCP-001 at 2:46 PM ON 11/12/09

Prudish?

Hardly.

The thing here is this is an entertainment site.

Anyone can access the material posted here.

Now, unless the good people running Syfy want to really ramp things up a bit, they can drop their regular lineup and start playing uncensored versions of Flesh Gordon, Zombie Strippers, and Galaxy of Terror.

Those ought to get those Neilson ratings going through the roof.

But if its not looking at changing it targeted demographic to those only above 18 years old, then it ought to look at being a tad more careful about what gets posted here.

By BuckBlack at 3:03 PM ON 11/12/09

Why don't we cut the cr@p here and just start posting links to porn sites.

I mean - surely, we can do better than these endless 'Beavis and Buthead' droolfests (being pitched at kids in their early teens, BY kids in their early teens, looks like).

No one seems to be too interested in SciFi here anyway. So lets do it.

By muadib at 3:11 PM ON 11/12/09

mcp. NONE of this ,i repeat NONE of this is porn! Try joining the rest of the world in the 21st centurty and leave the alquedaesque thinking with the faNATICS!

By jdmimic at 3:20 PM ON 11/12/09

Why is it that whenever some people say they would like something more than shallow sex themes, those who do only want shallow sex themes respond by calling them prudes and other names? Really, is that the best you can do? Stupidly insult anyone with a different opinion?
This has nothing to do with prudishness. This has everything to do with wanting a higher class of news on a science fiction news feed.

I know feeding the trolls doesn't help, but I remain stubbornly optimistic that one day, with enough repetition, something beyond primal instincts might sink through. I can not give up hope that we may find our way to a more civilized society in which people may discuss things without debasing themselves with mindless insults.

By BuckBlack at 3:27 PM ON 11/12/09

@muadib. ALL of this, I repeat ALL of this is porn!

If you're intent on seeing the kind of pictures shown above, they can be found elsewhere (and much more besides) on sites dedicated to this kind of stuff. Heck, you might even consider buying the magazines.

Call me an old guy, but I remember when you could read SciFi articles on this site :(

By MCP-001 at 3:53 PM ON 11/12/09

muadib, would you show any of these magazine covers to any of your relatives under, say, 12 years old (i.e. nieces, nephews, sons or daughters).

I have no issues with talking to them about the Sci-fi that I like to read and watch.

But, I do limit what I talk about to something that is appropriate to their age group.

And that is what is missing here.

I'm not advocating that this turn into a PBS Kids chat room or we all sit around and sing "Kumbayah", but you need to be aware of everyone who is here and reading what's being posted.

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 3:54 PM ON 11/12/09

@GAVAL & rts2020

She was another Green Orion in a cut scene from the latest Trek movie where Kirk hadn't yet discovered the subtleties of being able to distinguish one from the other.

By cogadh at 4:48 PM ON 11/12/09

@everyone calling these pics porn -

Take a walk through the magazine section of your favorite grocery store or book store or convenience store or any other store that sells magazines, you will find every single one of those covers proudly displayed for everyone to see, regardless of age. If that is porn, then pretty much every major retailer in the world is guilty of displaying pornographic images. The fact is, porn is not what these images are. They are not explicit, they do not even feature nudity. They may be intended to titillate, but being titillating does not make it porn. You all just need to get over your fragile sense of morality and pull that stick out of your collective asses. So maybe a "top 25 hottest" list is not the kind of thing you want to see on this site, but just because you don't want to see it does not make it porn.

By MCP-001 at 5:34 PM ON 11/12/09

I'd love to know which grocery store chains you shop at, cogadh.

I never noticed a copy of Playboy, Playgirl, Maxim, Vanity Fair or Rolling Stone in the check-out lanes at the corner Wal-Mart.

The convenience and book stores that I frequent at least have enough common sense to put them where kids can't get directly at them.

I also got a response back from someone who was able to cite the specific law.

It's under 28 C.F.R. 75, also knows as 2257 regulations.

A quick read can be found here:

http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr;sid=c400d3f7be6a08a261ddf625e1187d09;rgn=div5;view=text;node=28%3A2.0.1.1.30;idno=28;cc=ecfr

Part of it stipulates that those under 18 cannot view these images.

So, the SciFi Wire staff has a bit of a dilemma.

It can continue posting articles like this, and hope that no one drops a dime on them to the FBI.

I understand that federal prison is nice this time of year.

Or, it can stick to writing about SciFi related topics.

By dfgsdf at 5:38 PM ON 11/12/09

Again how the F*&k is this about scifi? or what maybe its about syfy whatever the f**k that is.

By cogadh at 5:55 PM ON 11/12/09

@MCP
You need to look a little harder next time. You might not find Playboy or Playgirl at the checkout line, as they do have nude pictures inside them (but not on the cover, which even if behind the counter, is still displayed), but the rest of those mags are openly available, either at the checkout or in the magazine section.

Also, you need to check the facts on that law you referenced, it specifically applies to photos, videos etc. that depict explicit sexual acts, not cheesecake photos. Pin-up art like that has always been a readily available thing and is not considered pornography, by any legal or other definition.

By dfasdfasda at 6:22 PM ON 11/12/09

To all you uptight SOBs on here citing laws and what not. GET A LIFE!! If you dont want kids coming here SET FILTERS ON YOUR KIDS COMPUTERS! I agree that this story is completely assanine but then again i think its more of a response to comments made on previously assanine stories featuring semi explicit photos. Seems someone at syfy is rubbing it in all the whiners noses. Im sure all of you complaining on here are actually fueling similar stories. Also im sure the complainers (much like that prejean idiot) all have home videos of them doing some pretty naughty things...Instead of posting on here go secure those videos you dont want your kiddies finding that stuff and giving it to TMZ? hah

By jdmimic at 6:40 PM ON 11/12/09

dfasdfasda - Your statements are both rude, uncalled for, and completely wrong. You exhibit the crassness and foolishness that exemplifies the problems with anonymous comments like this.
You can't be sure about anything you said about others because you don't know any of them. Since most people judge others through the filters of their own experience, we can only assume that you are the one that is hiding videos at home. Go wank off to them rather than insult other people you know nothing about.

I don't consider the pictures here porn and I am not advocating censoring them, but the defenders of them seem to be making a good case for why putting them here is a decision that should be reconsidered.

By N at 7:06 PM ON 11/12/09

Hayden Panetierre?? Seriously????

By Omen at 7:29 PM ON 11/12/09

Always a pleasure to see Gillian on RS.

By wraithfodder42 at 8:07 PM ON 11/12/09

Are you guys running out of news? Seriously. It's getting rather tabloidy here as of late.

By keem at 11:17 PM ON 11/12/09

hey, geeky does not necessarily qualify as sci fi.

By FigNeutron at 11:54 PM ON 11/12/09

Milla Jovovich for the win!

By XCalPro at 8:05 AM ON 11/13/09

Seriously, do the guys that pose for Playgirl realize that the only people getting off on their picks are gay men? Makes you wonder why they do it.

By BuckBlack at 8:19 AM ON 11/13/09

@dfasdfasda "If you dont want kids coming here SET FILTERS ON YOUR KIDS COMPUTERS!

Probably not a bad idea. But, a shame it has to come down to that.

@dfasdfasda "someone at syfy is rubbing it in all the whiners noses. Im sure all of you complaining on here are actually fueling similar stories".

You may be right here, too. I can just picture a couple of Beavis and Buthead types putting this together exactly for that purpose.

Anyway, dfasdfasda. Enjoy.

By Ric at 8:40 AM ON 11/13/09

It is a truly sad state of affairs when SciFi geeks complain about a cheesy fluff piece and call it porn. Did anyone complain when about Carrie Fisher's bikini-style outfit in SW:Episode 6? How about Hugh Jackman going shirtless in Wolverine? Or Sly Stallone's 'slighty-nude' scene in Demolition Man? I don't remember hearing anyone complain about Megan Fox running around in a micro-mini for most of Transformers 2?

My point is that sex sells. It always has and always will (the original Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' was considered pornographic when it was published). As free-willed individual's we have the right to chose what we want to read and what we don't want to read. So, if you have a problem with fluff pieces like this, DON'T CLICK ON THE LINK!!! It's not rocket science and no one is going to force you to read what you don't like. I personally love the occassional 'fluff' piece. Life is already too serious and we really, really need to 'LIGHTEN UP!!'

BTW: with the exception of Playboy and Playgirl, all the other magazines can be found in easy reach via the magazine rack or at the check-out counter of the vast majority of grocery, convenience and department stores worldwide.

By scifiwoman at 9:57 AM ON 11/13/09

Ok I am a fan of sexy as much as the next person but this is just plain ridiculous. In case you people who run this site haven't figured this out not all sci fi fans are boys between the ages of 18 and 34. Yes sex sell but what are you selling here, this site? Why don't you try putting up some real Sci fi news instead. You insult my intelligence with posts like this. Not everybody who reads you posts thinks with their d*ck.

By pinkraygun at 10:08 AM ON 11/13/09

@MCP: Why are you afraid of boobs? Your kids are more likely to be damaged by violence on TV and video games than by an image of a woman in lingerie. Our priorities when it comes to this kind of thing are really screwed up. You can't see titties on network TV, but you can see a guy get decapitated, tortured with a drill, etc.

You say that your Wal-Mart doesn't carry Maxim, Vanity Fair, or Rolling Stone. But, I'll just bet they sell guns.

By MCP-001 at 10:41 AM ON 11/13/09

pinkraygun, et al.

You're really not understanding my position here.

I quite frankly, very much do not care what you read or do on your own time.

If you want to sit in front of your screen and pleasure yourself with the covers posted above and a pallet of Kleenex, then have at it.

The point that I am trying to make here is that there are appropriate and inappropriate places to display the material posted above (along with the "Caprica" and PETA threads).

Placing it out in the open where it can be easily accessible by anyone of any age isn't it.

And I also agree with scifiwoman's comments above.

The people here at Sci Fi Wire seem to have lost focus on what types of stories need to be reported and who their readers really are.

Now, if you want to alienate that demographic and drive them away, that's their business.

Given what this site is supposed be promoting, I would've thought that they would've known better.

Perhaps, I was wrong with that initial assessment?
