If you're anywhere near adult age, you remember Kenneth Johnson's 1983 sci-fi miniseries V, and it's likely the things you remember most about it are: The aliens were lizards, they ate guinea pigs, and someone had a half-alien baby.
You may also recall the arrival of giant spaceships over the major cities of the world, a suspenseful scene that was subsequently ripped off wholesale by Independence Day.
Well, if you loved that stuff, the cast of ABC's newly rebooted V say you won't be disappointed by the new version, which debuts tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET/PT. (In fact, one character sarcastically refers to the ID4 theft in an aside.)
No one's saying at this point whether we will see lizard faces, guinea-pig snacks or alien newborns. But the cast members—Elizabeth Mitchell, Joel Gretsch, Morena Baccarin and Scott Wolf—offered up reasons that fans of the original will love the new version.
"Well, nobody's given birth to alien babies," Baccarin, who plays Anna, said in an exclusive interview on V's set in Vancouver, Canada, last week. "You know, let's hope we run for four seasons, and we can do all of those things. I think that, again, they don't want to ignore all those things, because those are special and interesting things that you can play with given this premise, but I don't really know what the plans are for those things yet."
Mitchell plays FBI counterterrorist agent Erica Evans, who discovers a secret hidden beneath the skin of every alien "Visitor," or "V." Gretsch is Father Jack, a priest questioning his faith in the wake of the Visitors' arrival. Wolf is Chad Decker, a career-hungry news anchor, who pursues an exclusive interview with Anna (Baccarin), the leader of the Vs. V will premiere Tuesday and air four episodes before taking a hiatus; it returns in March 2010.
Reasons fans of the original should watch the new version (click on the images for larger versions):
Giant freaking spaceships
"We watched it, and I actually had a room full of people cheering at how cool the effects were," Mitchell said. "The effects were great. And as a science fiction reader, as a fan, as someone who loves that stuff, to have it be better than my imagination was fantastic."
State-of-the-art visual effects
ZOIC Studios (Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) is doing the VFX.
"It is V 2.0," Wolf said. "It is V 2.9. ... Their ability to execute this story because of what they're capable of in terms of visual effects is just light-years from what it was at that time."
Smokin' hot evil lizard queen
"You said the L-word," Baccarin teased us while dressed in her form-fitting gray Anna suit. See, she's not bad; she's just drawn that way.
"Her face makes me happy," Mitchell says. "It looks like something out of a cartoon. You can't believe how architecturally perfect it is. So, I mean, you know, you have to have a babe, right? And you have to have a babe who could be one way or the other, and it seems to me that that's her."
Social commentary
Or as much of it as you can have in a show about giant freaking spaceships and evil alien lizard queens.
The original series was in part a thinly veiled allegory of the rise of Nazism in pre-World War II Germany. This one deals with societal paranoia in a post-9/11 era of terrorism. Whom do you trust? What is the cost of blind faith?
"I think it kind of goes into the rudimentary [elements] of us as people," Gretsch (The 4400) says. "Like, there's essential things you need in your life, and trust is one of them. And fear and danger, and what are other people's motives? Terror is in the world, and what are people trying to do for their own personal gain? To hurt you? And I think that is kind of very prevalent in the world, and I think that's great about storytelling is you can actually mirror what's occurring. I think that's what we're doing."
A similar story
The old V dealt with an underground resistance of ordinary people against what appeared to be an invincible, technologically advanced superpower. This one, same thing.
"The bones of it are the same," Wolf said. "You know, the intrigue of it, the questions it's asking, the exhilaration of the mystery and the possibility of the whole thing are exactly the same. "
Smokin' hot ass-kicking female protagonist
Mitchell's FBI agent Erica Evans is the principal good-guy ass-kicker in this incarnation of the show, a la Faye Grant's Juliet Parish in the original. (Interesting coincidence: Mitchell plays a character named Juliet on ABC's sister series Lost.)
"Elizabeth's in it," Gretsch says. "I mean, come on, she's pretty fantastic."

V is for Victory not Visitor...does not bode well for this show if they could not even get that right.
By PALADIN at 8:20 AM ON 11/02/09
I cannot believe how little interest I have in this re-make....Which is odd, as normally I am into giving any new sci-fi effort on the tube a shot, at least a look-see......
I`m not knocking the concept--A good Alien Invasion plot is just as intriguing as any other sort of sci-fi concept. I`ve enjoyed a few of `em myself.... I`ll always have fond memories of 'To Serve Man', thanks to Damon Knight. I watched the original 'V' and recall enjoying it, somewhat.
But I just have no interest at all in this new version. I don`t know precisely why I have no interest in even seeing the first episode just to give it a shot, but I just don`t CARE enough to even check the listings for it.
I would ruminate further on my lack of concern, but Nature Calls....
( Gotta go ' Drain The Lizard ' ! )

I spent Sunday watching the original miniseries plus The Final Battle that followed (lots of commercials) and have the series that followed in 1984 scheduled to record today and Tuesday.
The show is not bad, it had to have all the hokey resistance fighter stuff and did it pretty well.
The remake will be interesting to watch having just seen the entire original of everything. I noticed that most have trashed the series as not as good as the two miniseries now that Syfy made it all available to view I can make up my own mine. Thanks Syfy for putting it on. To this site operators if you can find the numbers on viewers for all the original from Sunday and today and Tuesday I am interested in knowing how many viewed, I bet it is over a million and might be much more.
I will be watching ABC for their Pilot tomorrow.

Okay, Mitchell IS smokin' hot, but Baccarin in that short haircut just doesn't do it for me. MUCH hotter in Firefly, which quite frankly I'd rather see come back than a re-tread of a great idea that got F-ed in the A real darn quick after the first mini-series. The second mini was NO great shakes, and the series was a swift downward spiral, only slightly mitigated by teh hawtness of Jane Badler.
By TB3 at 8:37 AM ON 11/02/09
They should get Michael Ironside back to reprise his role as Ham Tyler. He was a great lizard-killer and I bet he can still kick ass.
By divephotog at 8:45 AM ON 11/02/09
Let's see... they want 4 seasons to tell the stoeies that 8 hours on mini-series and a few single episodes told? Sounds like a boring drag to me!
Few remakes are ever better than the original, and hate to think this will follow in that history. - kh
By xxnapoleonsolo at 8:46 AM ON 11/02/09
This new V has been troubled from the start, but it will find it difficult to match the old one because that was massively ambitious event television in a world with far fewer choices, as well as being something we hadn't seen before on TV.
People have so many multi-media options now that it is hard for something like V to break through.
I'll still watch it though - I'm a sucker for smokin hot lizard queens!

"You may also recall the arrival of giant spaceships over the major cities of the world, a suspenseful scene that was subsequently ripped off wholesale by Independence Day."
Actually, the 'giant spaceships over the major cities of the world' goes back even further to Sir Arthur C. Clark's 1953 Book: Childhood's End: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood%27s_End
Maybe earlier. Actually, I've seen several movies that go back to some of the scenes that are in that book.

I think Morena is one of the most beautiful women in the world, but doesn't she look a lot like Michael Cera in that first pic?
By Marty B. at 9:39 AM ON 11/02/09
When I read this article the only thing that gave me pause is the one item in the list lacking an image was the item for "State-of-the-art visual effects".
I'll be catching this on Hulu, providing they port it over to Hulu.
@xoman, I don't see it, but I like the idea of Michael Cera as alien leader, conquering Earth through mock self-deprecating passive aggressiveness.
By Marty B. at 10:25 AM ON 11/02/09
Victory007, you ought to look into this concept called "multivalence" or for the sake of this thread "multiV." Basically the letter "V" can mean many things, making a program more nuanced. It could mean victory, it could be visitors, it's likely both.
I swear this show may fail because the contemporary audience is just stupider than the audience of the 80s. That's astounding.
By hollywoodpresents at 11:00 AM ON 11/02/09
I agree with Marty B, Audiences today are spoiled by CGI and Big Budget ILM effects that the simple art of good story telling elludes them. The basic viewer does not want to think, let's face it our society spends more time trying to create things to do our day-to-day for us making us a very lazy people, so why would'nt that same logic be applied to our entertainment.
A good story does not need ober-the-top effects. It needs character, plot development, and style. Forget what everyone else is saying and give it a chance. People thought Firefly would be stupid as well as the idea of BTVS, and look what happened with both.
By jdmimic at 12:27 PM ON 11/02/09
I must say I am quite amused by the large blank white space in the "State of the Art visual effects" section. Is this in some small way a not-so-subtle commentary?:)

@jdmimic: Clearly Anna has messed with our video feed. We've fixed it. :)

I watched most of the original V on Syfy yesterday and was glad that I did. I have seen it many times before, but the acting, characters and even the special effects were so well done, that I want to watch it again. I will definitely want to check out the new V remake as well to give the show a chance.
V is awesome.

By IGPNicki at 2:40 PM ON 11/02/09
here, here to the whole V is for Victory comment. It's true, at least in the case of the original series. Yeah, if they can't get that right, it really isn't a good sign. I do hope they get it right, but i'm pretty doubtful. The first one was a television event. This one is a tv series that ABC don't even seem to be getting behind. Oh well. There's always Kenneth Johnson's plan for a movie.

Another remake (long yawn)...
I've already stated my 6 million reasons to not watch this copycat series.
In addition, why support a series not wanted to credit the original creator (Kenneth Johnson) of this whole concept in the first place.
By Rick at 7:00 PM ON 11/02/09
I loved the original show - and will have to check out the new one. Might be fun to see it play out over a longer time period - and with some new "less cheese" special effects.
By Lame looking chicks with high end FX DO NOT make a successful sci-fi show at 7:54 PM ON 11/02/09
Oh God once again they managed to totally screw up an iconic masterpiece (albeit flawed masterpiece) from TV's glory days.
This new Diana just plain sucks especially with that outstandingly bad bowl cut shes sporting. To each his own however shes just too boring and yuppie looking to me & could not hold a candle to equisitely beautiful women like Jane Badler or Faye Grant. Can someone tell me what the hell is wrong with these casting people?
LISTEN UP casting dept.. If Jane Badler is going to come back for this then PLEASE PLEASE try to get Faye Grant back as well! These are 2 of the most beautiful and liked actresses from the 80's era & this show will clearly be needing some babes that can act as well as look good.
By bobanort at 8:21 PM ON 11/02/09
@Limey: Watched the Original. Did you forget the best scene in the whole original miniseries where Leonard Cimino's character and Ruby are walking and see some kids with a can of red spray paint defacing visitor propoganda posters?
Bernstein: "If you're going to do it, you do it right. I show you."
Takes the kid by the hand and paints a large red "V" across the poster. Then he looks at the kid and says "You understand? For Victory." They cut to the kid's face and the kid nods. Then they cut to Bernstein who tells the kid to "go tell your friends".
The resistance even used the "V" handsign made with the index and middle finger a couple of times. "V" never stood for "visitors". It was a symbol of the resistance.
By Gill Avila at 10:26 PM ON 11/02/09
And, if you do the "V" sign with the back of your fingers out, it's the British version of "Fuck You."
Bit I'm sure ABC already knew that...

If this were simply a re-make that would blow.
This inane chatter about whether V stands for Visitor or Victory completely misses the point.
The writers of this new show obviously are playing on symbolism of how the symbol of the letter V is powerful in the hands of the ruling Visitors and in the hands of the resistance who strive for Victory.
I can't believe people are actually complaining about the fact that this show is successfully using symbolic layers and playing with deeper intellectual concepts like in this particular instance. It's wonderful that they are being playful with symbolism!
Also, at first, I was personally dismayed at how quickly the first episode blew into the big reveal by the end of the first 42 minute episode.
Then I realized how wonderful it was. Most of us remember the basic lizard/fascism/resistance focus of the original, so the writers did us the great favor of going ahead and getting all of that out of the way in the pilot! How great is that?
People here are complaining that ABC is going to drag out a two part mini-series into four seasons, and they are missing the point entirely! They went ahead in the pilot and quickly got through the necessary acknowledgements of what we all know from the original mini-series. In other words, they took all of 42 minutes to get across what the mini did in 4.5 hours! It's evident that if this show does last for four seasons, it will give the writers a wonderful opportunity to expand on the original mini's ideas concerning such important topics as fascism in America but in the post-Patriot Act era of today.
In other words, this show has the great opportunity to be the intellectual playground of serious and deep issues over an extended number of seasons, much like BSG did. It may be that shows rightful heir if played right.
I simply cannot believe the whiny ignorance of the complaints that I'm reading on here. Did these nay-sayers actually watch the pilot and spend time thinking about it before going into apoplectic fan-boy and fan-girl fits?
By Dreggor Gade at 6:20 AM ON 11/08/09
Oh, and I forgot to mention the most important reminder to all:
Now that the basic concept of the show has been addressed in the pilot, the writers of the new show have the freedom to go into whole new directions with the premise.
This is a wonderful thing.
Look at how well it worked for Battlestar. If the writers of the reboot were slaves to the original, it would have sucked. Instead it was one of the best TV shows in the last decade. It became an excellent drama that moved in a different direction and addressed modern issues that we all grapple with today, such as the wars in the Middle East.
The new "V" reboot has the same opportunity to evolve like BSG did into its own different and wonderful entity.
The funniest thing I find about these ridiculous fan complaints is that so many BSG fans lamented that NBC was unable to move BSG from cable to a broadcast audience.
And what is ABC doing? They are taking the huge risk of having a sci-fi show broadcast on network TV. This is exactly what sci-fi fans so greatly desired for BSG, but instead of applauding ABC, they're taking cheap and frankly moronic potshots at the network.
I will never entirely understand the strange bitter venting of fanatic on the internet. Even when they get exactly what they were begging for two years ago, they're too stubborn and provincial to see that they have just been given their exact wish, and instead of being thankful to the network, they're writing hate mail.
People need to take some time for introspection before they start clacking away on their keyboards spouting out the first emotions they have. Think before you type...

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS SHOW.
Hear me out for a second. Those of you that call yourselves a fan of the original, and aren't watching because it's a "Ripoff" or shows disrespect to Ken Johnson, PLEASE listen.
Warner Brothers own the rights to the TV show, V.
Kenneth Johnson owns the rights to the FEATURE FILM, V.
Even if you HATE this new V, turn it on anyway. You don't have to watch it. Do your dishes or something. Give it its ratings to keep it on the air because if the TV show, as much as you hate it, does well, then we have a chance of bringing the ORIGINAL back.
If the new TV show works, then Kenneth Johnson has a better chance of getting the funding to do HIS version in theaters. There should be no doubt that that's something that any REAL V fan wants to see.
Right?
I know that Kenneth Johnson wants this show to succeed for that reason.
