Director J.J. Abrams confirmed to us that the follow-up to his hit Star Trek won't hit theaters until 2012, speaking last night at a party at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles to celebrate today's DVD/Blu-ray release. But that could change. And the creators gave us tantalizing hints about the sequel's timeframe and other story points.
Producer/writer Damon Lindelof told us that he thinks it's impossible to be done sooner. "Yeah, I think that we would be hard pressed to get it on screens by 2011," Lindelof said. "If that's the case, we'd better get to writing right now."
But Abrams believes more time will benefit the creative process. "It's like closet space," Abrams said. "You use what you've got. The more time you have, the more time you have to use to hopefully make it a better movie."
For his part, co-writer Roberto Orci wouldn't talk about release dates. "Who knows? It could still be whenever," Orci said. "I haven't heard any firm dates. It could be sooner or later."
What about the story?
Time shifts. Lindelof suggested that the sequel may play with time in relation to the first film, much as The Bourne Ultimatum takes place largely in between events from The Bourne Supremacy. "One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something," Lindelof said. "And the question that you're asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we're not going to tell you."
Whatever you're expecting, you're wrong. One way to combat sequilitis is to avoid the cliche of bigger, louder and more explosions. "Do we have to do that?" Lindelof pondered. "Is there something else that we can do that's a little bit off the beaten path? When you buy your ticket and your popcorn and you go and sit and watch the second movie that we're all working on together, we want to give the audience an experience that feels like it's not a sequel in all the best ways."
Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) will reach the next level. "Now that we've done that, you can't play that same joke again," Abrams said. "It's got to be about 'What is their relationship?' and 'Who are these people?' That's why the next one, hopefully while still maintaining the sense of fun and adventure, can go a little bit deeper in terms of the script."
Khaaaan! Abrams, Orci and his writing partner Alex Kurtzman keep hinting that they may introduce the character of Khan Noonien Singh, but haven't committed to anything. We asked Abrams to weigh the pros and cons of revamping a classic Trek villain. "We're not even at that stage yet, but the fun of where we are on the sequel is we could use some of what was done before in a new way," Abrams said. "But we haven't even figured out what we would use yet, so it's very early on." Orci added that the creative team would vote on whether Khan works for their new story. "That'll be kind of a groupthink decision," Orci said.
It's getting close. They are narrowing the ideas down, really. If it sounds like they're just not committing because they don't have anything, don't worry. They're down to the big-picture decisions, like what the philosophical theme of the sequel could be. "There's a couple themes up in the air that we're debating about," Orci said. "But we want them to be invisible, so it won't be until the movie comes out that you'd ever hear what they were. We're zeroing in some compass directions. It's still the story phase."
Abrams still wants to direct it. The last time Abrams gave a press conference, he cause a lot of speculation with the phrase "If I, in fact, direct the Star Trek sequel." Abrams clarified that he has every intention of doing it, but there's nothing to commit to. "In theory, I would be available, and it would be fun to do," Abrams said. "Since there's no script, it's hard to talk about directing a movie that the story doesn't even exist."
Could Star Trek 2 be 2012's The Dark Knight? Star Trek is already the highest-grossing Trek movie ever. It's been so well received universally that Abrams expects to have an even bigger audience for the sequel, by the time more fans discover the film on DVD. Another example of that was Batman Begins. "Certainly no one is looking to expect any kind of Dark Knight numbers on a Star Trek sequel," Abrams conceded. "Hopefully the quality of the cast of the first film, the fun of the movie, will eventually, over time, touch people who would not normally have gone to see the film in theaters. When a sequel comes out, they're converts, because they'd actually seen the film that was made originally. That would be the goal."
Start the A-list casting rumors now. Star Trek featured major stars like Winona Ryder and Tyler Perry in supporting roles. Abrams is open to bringing a movie star in to attract even more viewers. "I think that it's not a bad idea to begin thinking practically in that way," Abrams said. "What can be done to help open it up? In terms of casting, sure. Casting an international star would be a really good idea."

Personally I hope we get something a bit darker that addresses the changes in the timeline.
By SethSJ at 1:16 PM ON 11/17/09
I still want to see Dr. Marcus(Kirk's Ex and mother of his deceased son, David) brought into the storyline somehow. Then Kirk would have a love interest. But how would it play out in this timeline? I'm not so sure about Khan.
By BenRoethig at 1:17 PM ON 11/17/09
I would stay away from Khan though. I don't know if he quite fits with the JJ-verse.

Introducing the Klingons would be great. Also...more Wheaton.

Hopefully, the USS Botany Bay will just sail off into the void, undiscovered...and that story line can die.
There are more important things coming up that can mess up the Galaxy and beyond if not addressed....
1) The first Romulan attack with a cloaking device is about to occur against the Federation ("Balance of Terror")
2) There is about to be war with the Klingons near Organia
3) Lazarus is about to meet his double and cause the whole universe to blow up (The Alternative Factor)
4) Someone is going to find the Guardian of Forever and screw with time some more (City on the edge of Forever)
5) Kirk's brother Sam and family's planet are about to be invaded by pain causing parasites (Operation Annihilate)
6) Nomad is coming to wipe out Earth (The Changling)
7) The Doomsday machine is coming to gobble up Federation planets (The Doomsday Machine)
8) A giant amoebic life form is about to spawn and eat all the energy in the galaxy it can gobble (The immunity Syndrome)

Why not change the series name to Time Trek? After all, the majority of the movies have time travel as the main narrative ingredient. Not unlike superfluous lens flares, time travel is the adolescent film maker's elixir.

I like them having big stars in supporting roles, I think that's fun. like Tyler Perry. Keep the main roles to lesser known actors so we can enjoy the characters and not the movie stars playing them, but nothing wrong with a few fun cameos.

I got a great idea, instead of the fans trying to figure out the best way to write a movie and work with existing story's that have nothing to do with this particular series we wait for the film to just come out. I know, I know, Its a ground breaking idea but I think it could work. And the up-side to this idea is no one gets there hopes up or gets there feelings hurt when there Brilliant Idea is ignored in favor of the writers ideas! Breath taking idea!
By Nausicaa'sLover at 4:20 PM ON 11/17/09
I really hope the conflict in the next film centers around the theme of EXPLORATION! When was the last time Star Trek lived up to its name? I want to to see my action/adventure based on some real scientific discoveries within the vast unknown of space! Granted, Star Trek over the years has been increasingly about exploring space--only to find that space is a hostile place full of aliens who want to start wars, and so "Trek" quickly becomes "Wars". What's funny is that the writers over the years seem to be aware of this and seem to make "inside jokes" about it, and so every once and a while you'll hear a line spoken by a crew-member expressing how they don't do as much exploring as they'd like, one of the more memorable lines spoken by Picard at the beginning of Insurrection before heading off to save the day-- "Does anyone remember a time when we used to be explorers?" Well, that's alright and all, I guess, but I would LOVE to see some real exploration again, some truly exotic unknowns to sink my brain into. Will we ever see the day?

I am in my 50's and have been a fan of Trek since the first episode aired on TV.I saw the new Trek and still have mixed feelings on it but that is not the thing here.I am saying that if Trek ever goes into the REMAKE YARM Syndrome by taking old movies and/or episodes to make a movie like doing an Alternate Khan I will be walking the space plank to a death in airless space.Trek will be gone for me and I will watch my old Treks.
I refuse to watch Trek that is remakes/alternate remakes.
Sorry I love Trek that is to say Original Films/Tv of Trek.

I love Trek in almost all of it's incarnations...but this site literally has run it into the ground. Months leading up to it's release in theaters, every single days there was a new clip or a new picture released or an interview with JJ-A. Now that the movie is out on video we are being treated to almost daily reports on what may or may not be in a movie over 2 years away. Come on Sci-Fi...tell JJ-A to just make the movie and stop trying to work up support for it when you don't even know the direction your going in yet.
By tamcamry at 7:44 PM ON 11/17/09
Whoever said 'Kilingons find Botany Bay' just tripped into something too awesome. Khan takes over the Empire by force (ie fighting when he has to, convincing some of the Klingons of his 'vision' ) then he fights a war with the Romulans and wins, and then the Federation is the big underdog.

So what exactly is their plan? Are they going to recycle characters and give them new looks with totally different stories. Thats pretty much the only thing they can do.
@Nausicaa'sLover
I agree with your point that its mission is to explore. And it would be nice, but studios would find a way to throw in some form of action. They could explore a prehistoric planet and then boom it turns into Jurrassic Park. They could explore a pre-warp society and then boom they get caught up in the middle of vicious WWII on that planet. You know how studios can be. It might work out better as a tv episode other than a feature length film. If you want the kind of exploration that doesnt always result in big space battles and crazy villians. Many people love 2 dimensional conflicts and not deep political, cultural issues when going to the theatres. But in the end the studio will decide what brings in more money.
@everyone who wants Klingons.
I remember an episode of the simpsons where they are watching a star trek movie called Star Trek XIII: So very tired, and in it the main bad guys are the Klingons, and Captian Kirk said perfectly: (sigh) "Again with the Klingons." Thats how I feel whenever the Klingons are the main badguys.
@Shaddoe
I like that idea of the mirror universe, but the whole evil twin scenario that every one has, does it have to be that universe? Does it have to be a mirror universe? Why not a whole different universe? Im not taking shots, just wondering can there be another universe?
If they do have to recycle characters, why not the Andorians since Vulcan is gone, or bring in the Temporal Cold War since time travel seems to be the only answer for Star Trek, or hell Bring in Q, after all he introduced the Borg let him introduce something else in this new time line just for fun since he loves to be mischief maker.
I don't know, but I agree with anyone who belives don't bring back Khan, its just to soon, and that will take more time to even try to compare it to the original.

I'd really like to see a specific mission or series of missions in the next Trek. Not necessarily a remake of a classic episode, but I would like it to FEEL like a classic episode. The Enterprise is out doing it's job, exploring, star charting, whatever, and something happens.
By Jeffery2010 at 10:20 AM ON 11/18/09

@CaptainKickinthePants
Half the fun is the speculation. This is apparently lost on you but most of us understand its value.
@tamcamry
I love you.
@Shaddoe & REDante
This Star Trek universe is already a mirror universe. The original timeline and the original mirror universe would both be considered mirror universes of this new timeline. I doubt Abrams and crew will delve back into either of those two timelines because that would damage the idea that this is a new, separate timeline.
@SciFiWire

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 10:40 AM ON 11/18/09
How about unbeknownst to Kirk he took more out of the Spock Prime mind fusion than he was supposed? He miraculously gets out of scrapes like Kirk Prime but on a subconscious level he pits Prime's antagonists against each other in accomplishing that. We get mashups:
1. Nomad versus The Doomsday Machine
2. M-5 versus Landru & Baal
3. Norman versus Ruk
4. Khan versus the Kelvins
5. Apollo versus Plato's Stepchildren
6. Talosians versus the Melkotians
7. V'ger versus The Whale Probe
8. Janice Lester versus Marta
Epic confrontations! Twice the BOOM!
By Old Guard at 11:23 AM ON 11/18/09
How about the best of both worlds (original series wise): The Doomsday Machine and The Klingons? For it's time, that was a good episode, with a lot of promise. Made today and throw in some Klingons, you've got a show, with plenty of room for further characterization, drama, and humor. But leave Khan alone. As the saying goes: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
And some would say, the same could be said of The Doomsday Machine episode. Except this is an original episode of untapped potential, that wouldn't feel so much like a remake. That's what Khan was, an expansion on an original episode. And just think of the title. Star Trek: The Doomsday Machine. Kids alone will love it. Let the snarkiness commence.
By Kikstad at 12:47 PM ON 11/18/09
Can't do Wrath of Khan remake, it would have to be Space Seed remake.
I would love to see them introduce Mitchell in a riff of "Where No Man Has Gone Before."
Best yet, how about exploring the Captain Pike story -- retell "The Cage" (or "Menagerie"?) with Kirk going through the adventure instead of Pike now that he has early command of the Enterprise.
By Duke at 12:57 PM ON 11/18/09
I would set the new Star Trek movie in an alternate universe.
Young Kirk and the Enterprise crew are exploring an uncharted region of space and pass into the Mirror Universe.
Old Kirk is there, but as Emperor Tiberius. Giving a chance for William Shatner to appear, but as the Big Bad vs. young Kirk.
In this universe, everything is flipped. The Klingons, Gorn, Romulans, Cardassians, and Borg are the good guys. And the bad guys are the Vulcans, Bajorans, Andorians, and humans, all ruled by Tiberius. Khan would be young Kirk's best friend and ally.
There is a multi-universal law that young Kirk discovers: If you die in one universe, you die in all the others. He faces a dilemma in having to fight Tiberius and kill him. There would be an epic battle at the end between Tiberius' Terran Empire and young Kirk's Federation 2.
Maybe young Spock could fight the evil Mirror Spock. Of course, this Mirror Universe would be somewhat different from the one in the TV series. Maybe one of the Mirror Universes. Kirk would be young in one universe and old in the other because time flows differently. Spock would explain it. At the end, young Kirk imprisons Tiberius in a stasis field so neither dies.
That plot would certainly defy expectations and it would end the over-reliance on time travel. I doubt it would fly in Hollywood. What do you think?
By Sheep Farm at 1:15 PM ON 11/18/09
How do we bring back William Shatner? Easy! Have Captain Kirk time travel back (from this new timeline to the present (or where the first movie left off). But, that is too easy, way too easy. Why not get the original Captain Kirk back? In "The Final Frontier", Captain Kirk said that when he dies, he knows that he would be alone, yet in "Generations" (when he "did" die), he wasn't. CAPTAIN KIRK AIN'T DEAD! Maybe what we say was a clone or a partial split of his subconcious. Perhaps he split into two during a transporter accident that went unnoticed. I don't know. But, he ain't dead according to "The Final Frontier", so he should be able to come back.
By jdmimic at 2:11 PM ON 11/18/09
As long as they explore some relevant cultural issue like TOS tried to do a lot, I'll be satisfied. I don't want to see just a fight with no meaning behind it. Action is great, I love action and explosions. I just want it to have some intellectual thought-provoking substance as well.

I think the new star trek film was really good, it gave me another Back to the Future timeline storyline. But I think we need to stop remaking of the original storylines of the past, using past creativity that has made the original series and movies great at that period of time in that particular generations. Why redo and remakes films that keep repeating the same idea, but continue to use past ideas to try reclaim the box office thrown. Such as the Original Superman and Superman Returns. We keep using this timeline story too many times and gets very tiredsome of repeating the same theory over and over. HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS NEED TO THINK SOMETHING NEW AND ORGINAL AND QUIT USING PAST IDEAS AND THINK IT IS GOING TO REDO THIS GREAT BOX OFFICE GENRA YEAR AFTER YEAR. WHY NOT DESIGN A NEW STAR TREK VIILIAN THATS HAS NEVER HEARD BEFORE, A MIX UP OF BORG AND DATA, OR SOMETHING DIFFERENT INSTEAD OF TAKING THINGS FROM THE PAST CLASSIC TV SERIES SHOWS. Why bring up another Khan storyline, it has been done too many times, THINK OF CREATIVITY NEW AND QUIT STEALING OR MAKING RECOPIES OF THE ORIGINAL STORIES!! IT GETS OLD VERY OLD. THE DARK KNIGHT WAS A GREAT SEQUEL TO BATMAN BEGINS. BUT AGAIN ANOTHER JOKER AND TWO-FACE ENEMIES THAT HOLLYWOOD KEEPS REPEATING OVER AND OVER, AND NOW RUMORS OF ANOTHER RIDDLER AND CATWOMAN FLOWING AROUND THE RUMOR MILL. WHAT HAPPEN TO THE IDEA OF JOKER AND HARLEY QUINN IN A BATMAN MOVIE, OR KILLER CROC OR ENEMIES THAT HASN'T BEEN ON THE BIG SCREEN IN THE BATMAN MOVIES. AND HOLLYWOOD IS PLANNING AND FILMING A REMAKE OF FOOTLOOSE AND KARATE KID, WHAT'S NEXT ANOTHER REMAKE OF TOP GUN OR EVEN STARS WARS? Does everyone understand the point of this comment? Hollywood needs to stop remaking and do more on creativity ideas of new characters and storylines, find to use the original copies for research, but why redo/ remake the original films. It is call mind creativity laziness and stupidity
By floxy at 11:12 PM ON 11/18/09
Please can there not be a new creative idea out of Hollywood? the new Star Trek was pretty that's about all the story was predictable, the acting not all that good. The universe is a big thing, lots of cool unknown out there - please don't bring back Khan, let him rest- If you are going to bring back a characters -bring back the Talosians from the original pilot- that was good original scifi-not the remake drivel- and I do realize that the new star trek caters to the lower literacy level of today's 20 somethings but god make something worth $10 bucks to see.

Actually, I thought of them but I couldn't come with anything epic to double the BOOM.
THE TRIBBLE WITH TROLLOPS?
The only boom I could see was a miner's frying pan colliding with his cranium.
DS9 did give us the idea of a tribble bomb, though...
Or even Mudd's other ep?
I Tribble
Kirk keeps Norman endlessly occupied corralling tribbles while Kirk and his crew escapes? Still no boom...
By EnvoyPV at 2:12 PM ON 11/23/09
@Duke I like some of those ideas. A little problem casting Kahn, but then both Kirks could yell, "KAAAHHHNNNN!!!" during the movie. That'd be awesome!
By OldGuy at 2:33 PM ON 12/02/09
I think it would be great to change it more, say the romulans realize that one of their own destroyed Vulcan and change on a deeper level toward the federation out of guilt and the Kilingons go the other way and never form the aliance because of a new relationship between Romulus and Federation. Big battles between the klingons and federation with the romulans coming to the federations aid.
By bobmonkey at 10:14 AM ON 01/26/10
Q if we are playing with time shifting we need Q, and besides Q rules.
By kevinftmyers at 9:58 PM ON 01/30/10
Love the idea of the federation being the underdog.
Remember, Vulcan has been destroyed, a cornerstone world of the Federation. What if in its absence, there is division, unrest, and even worlds seceding from the Federation. Border skirmishes, espionage, assassinations. In general, all hell breaks loose. A couple main characters (Spock, Sulu, some Red shirts) go on a covert mission in a yet to be revealed secondary ship within the Enterprise. (Think, small, fast, heavily armed fighter type ship), which ends up on a planet for ground based hand to hand action.
Meanwhile the Enterprise (Kirk in command) defends a Federation outpost in a totally different sector. (Space battle.)
Plenty of classic Trek political based drama to start and JJ style ass kicking at the end.
And last but not least, kill off a main character. Sulu maybe?Nothing like a tear jerker ending with the killer still at large and a furious and vengeful Kirk to bring people back for the next one.
Perhaps the killer is the main villain for ST13, and the Enterprise is in pursuit of him throughout ST13 just one step behind, and at some point in the movie Kirk must be talked back from the brink of rage and a revenge killing by a moving scene in which Spock calls Jim his friend for the first time. Oh, and meanwhile, the Federation continues to erode and traditional Federation enemies smell blood in the water.
ST14 anyone?
DId ya get all that?
By stevo135 at 8:32 PM ON 01/31/10
i think that its time Q was in on a movie. with all the changes in the timeline Q could take pity (if thats possible) and intervene in the altered events, or present one of his elaborate trials for Captain Kirk and crew to undertake, then the Borg, Romulans or any aliens could be involved.
By astrochild at 2:12 AM ON 02/03/10
I think the Q idea is very good. The series finale of ST:TNG was almost a movie in itself, with a very interesting perspective on time. I liked Q's line at the end, where he urges Picard to explore the unexplored possibilities of existence.
Q wouldn't be the villain, he would be the trickster who opens the hero's mind to possibilities of which he hadn't thought before.
