Syfy unveils Caprica key art

Syfy unveils \<i\>Caprica\<\/i\> key art

Syfy has released the key art for its upcoming series Caprica, and Maureen Ryan—aka The Watcher over at The Chicago Tribune—debuted the image that captures the spirit of the new show.

But you can check it out below.

"There's something really interesting about the idea of Zoe and the Eve metaphor," said Mark Stern, executive vice president of original content for Syfy and co-head of Universal Cable Productions, of the photograph featuring Alessandra Torresani as Caprica character Zoe Graystone.

The two-hour pilot of Caprica is now available on DVD and the Web; Caprica debuts on Syfy next year on Friday, Jan. 22, at 9/8C.

WOW!!! I would like a bite of her apple.

Nice child porn, Syfy.

By Markus at 7:46 PM ON 11/12/09

She's 22...

By TheGigaShadow at 7:47 PM ON 11/12/09

@j

If porn is what you see when you look at that ad, you're a truly sad person. Maybe just stick to your bible.

By asfm at 7:47 PM ON 11/12/09

When you say two hour, do you actually mean two hour? Or do you mean two hour when adverts are factored in?

It's just that i'm pretty sure DVDs don't have adverts, so it wouldn't be two hours long. I understand that network types talk in hour blocks and stuff, but it's misleading for actual real people.

Especially when talking about 90 minute long DVDs.

Anyway, that out of the way, I can't wait for Caprica. I have kind of a lingering sense that I wouldn't care about it at all if it wasn't a BSG spinoff, but it is. So I care. A lot.

By Archer at 7:48 PM ON 11/12/09

Wow, gorgeous add. I can already imagine what the people complaining about all the "hot babe" adds are gonna say though. Ummm...that's Alessandra Torresani (girl in ad above) and she is 22 not even close to a child..grow up.

By Archer at 7:53 PM ON 11/12/09

*Ugh..I meant ads (as in advertisements) not adds

By Matt at 7:55 PM ON 11/12/09

She may be 22, but the character is 16.

By jdmimic at 8:09 PM ON 11/12/09

As one of the people who complained about the 25 hot babes list, I can tell you what I think about it.

This story directly related to not only a science fiction show, but one on Syfy. I understand what they are alluding to in the picture. There is an actual story in this article of interest to their readers.

Thus, I see nothing wrong with the article.

Is that what you imagined, Archer? Or have you missed the point of the comments?

By Mandy at 8:29 PM ON 11/12/09

Why does this look like an alternative book cover to Twilight?

By Romy at 8:35 PM ON 11/12/09

I like it. Lets not waste time arguing people.
Lets appreciate the art! I don't have to read the article, I get out of it what I want. Apples usually signify "Garden of Eden" or "Eve" or the beginning of a choice. In my mind anyways.

By Iis4island at 8:38 PM ON 11/12/09

Does the photoshopping look a little strange? Her head looks too big. The whole "the character is 16" thing aside, I don't like the visual layout of the ad. It looks cheap. I would expect a better job for one of SyFy's major investments.

I bet the original photo of the actress has her body oriented forward. I swear they put her head on a skinny man's body. Look at the hands.

By SadFan at 8:44 PM ON 11/12/09

It looks dumb. It isn't related or relevant to the series.
And yes, the photoshop work is bad. It makes her cheeks look pudgy and child-like while displaying a the rest of the physical body looking much older.
Again MGM & SyFy with crap digital production for promo materials.
Still excited about the series, just not about their key art and images.

By Eva at 8:48 PM ON 11/12/09

If only they'd given her red eyes...otherwise LOVE the shot.

By jdmimic at 10:05 PM ON 11/12/09

I like the shoot. It seems clear to me that they are using the visual to reinforce the statement about choices. The show seems pretty evidently about a series of seductive but morally questionable choices that lead to a bad end. Now to be clear I am not talking about sexual choices at all, simply morally bad. Not unlike Pet Sematary. How far will a grieving parent go to erase the tragic and untimely loss of a child (which is what I have gathered from the commercials)? What consequences can choices made even with the best of intentions have? As a father of a little girl myself, I plan on watching simply to see how they handle this.

On that basis, I think the advertisement is effective. She is certainly eye-catching, the shot is tasteful and supports the intellectual allusions. Kudos.

By Melora at 10:22 PM ON 11/12/09

Does this ad make anyone else think of Desperate Housewives? And doesn't her hand look freakishly big?

I know SyFy wants to get a larger female audience, but I don't think this is the right metaphor for a show like Caprica.

By Roadking at 11:25 PM ON 11/12/09

Bitch, bitch, bitch!!! Why is it that the people who comment about the women posing for the advertisements can't just sit back and appreciate the beauty of the work instead of nitpicking it to death. Alessandra, if you actually read this...you do your Italian ancestors proud.....

By Mandy at 11:32 PM ON 11/12/09

Melora, Scifi / Syfy has a habit of making heads too big in photoshop. I noticed that with the cover art for The Dresden Files DVD. Paul Blackthorne's head looks far too big.

By FigNeutron at 11:58 PM ON 11/12/09

For fraks sakes people! Every time I come in here, all I see are complaints. Do any of you, on this entire site, like anything? Then why are you here? There are BSG haters to the left, and Twilight haters to right? And here I am, stuck in the middle with lame ass science fiction fans who cannot be pleased. Ever. Go watch some lifetime.

By vanguard at 1:16 AM ON 11/13/09

It's called HAVING AN OPINION, FigNeutron. You may be surprised to hear but that is exactly what message forums are for. Of course, if you don't like the comments section, you do actually have the choice not to read it.

By spilman at 2:32 AM ON 11/13/09

don't care how old the model/actress is, she looks 13 and thats what people who think she's sexy are responding to.
Please don't admit to it guys.

By hmmmmm at 5:50 AM ON 11/13/09

I'm having a flashback to artistically semi-nude Miley Cyrus photos here.

Yes, it's a lovely picture but I thought it was a semi naked teen when I first saw it.

It it possible to have skin that shade of white?

By kizer at 12:06 PM ON 11/13/09

You people crack me up.

I'm guessing her bare skin symbolizes either birth or being vulernable. I'm sure it doesn't say hey I'm a 22year old that looks 16 stare at me while I eat this apple, which we all know means garden of eden. You know the forbidden fruit.

I would say grow up, but then again stupidity and bitching about everything makes this site entertaining because it gives me something to point and laugh about every day as I read some of the obviously mentally retarded comments of some of the posters.

Sure point and laugh at some of my grammer and spelling, but at least the smack I'm talking isn't absolute rubbish.

By Mandy at 12:29 PM ON 11/13/09

The flaws with the picture

1. The girl looks too young, pretty but too young.

2. It reminds me of the cover art to Twilight. Really pale girl holding an apple.

3. What does a really pale girl holding an apple have to do with a battlestar Spin off.

4. Syfy's head swelling issue. I noticed this back when The Dresden Files came out on the DVD case. They distorted Paul Blackthorne's head on what was otherwise a good cover. I remember pointing this out to other Dresden Files fans and being told I was imagining it. Now I'm seeing it being done again.
Photoshop can ruin perfectly good film / TV art.
I saw a similar photoshop issue with the cover for Queen of the damned. If you move Akasha out of the way you realize Stuart Townsend's nipple is far too high, it's crawling into his armpit.
The cover art for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride is inverted (if you see the film you'll noticed the bride's decomposition is on the other limb, the image is reversed).

5. I'm confused. Are Cylons disguising themselves as apples now?

6. Oh, no! The Twilight fans have sucked the blood out of the cast of Syfy's latest show!

By Eva at 1:15 PM ON 11/13/09

"What does a really pale girl holding an apple have to do with a battlestar Spin off."

A BSG fan would know this is not a spin off, but a prequel. Just an FYI for you there. :) The picture is very cohesive with BSG's and Caprica's storyline in that it represents Eve and the Garden of Eden. You'll note the text in the picture, "The future of humanity begins with a choice."

As for it looking like a Twilight cover, doesn't the cover have two hands holding an apple? Not a gal, just two hands? With that line of thought, the apple could remind an individual of New York, or perhaps the apple could remind one of their teacher, a doctor, or really any number of other things besides Twilight. Regardless, I find that comparison faulty and tack it down as another person being overly saturated with Twilight media.

By jdmimic at 1:40 PM ON 11/13/09

Since the show is about the birth of the Cylons and the poor choices that led up to that, the Eve and Eden metaphor are appropriate. that being the case, a nude girl holding an apple with a bite out of it are all in line with the metaphor. Did they expect the nude girl would entice people? Sure, but as part of the allusion, it all hangs together.

The same can be said for her unusual whiteness. Yes, women can be that white, but not naturally. They either have a genetic deficiency or they are taking something to make their skin paler and whiter, which has been done for hundreds of years. However, in these cases, they would also show veins through the skin like you see on any pale person. i can see the veins through the skin on the back of my own hand for instance, gotta love the Irish skin.

Having said that, I agree the shot was photoshopped to get that degree of whiteness, but I can still forgive that as part of the metaphor (giving the people the benefit of the doubt). I actually think it works better for what they are trying to convey than a more realistic skin color.
And she is a Cylon after all, if I am reading the commercials correctly, and the first humaniform one to boot, so would you expect her to be completely perfect?
I think her head may be a bit too big in the photo, but visual perspective can do crazy things in pictures, so it could just be that. Regardless, i don't have a problem with it because it draws attention to her face and her eyes in particular, which is probably why they did it. That is an old psychological trick that women have been doing for hundreds of years using makeup and clothing accessories. It creates a more personal connection to the person. It is why people assume that if you don't look them in the eye, you are lying (which is completely wrong, but I will digress on the fallacies of body language in a different forum).

For those complaining about the people who are complaining, while you may have a point, perhaps you could make it in a more constructive fashion than the typical complaints and insults? Just a thought. That way you won't be adding to the problem you are complaining about.

I wish I could type as fast as Mandy:)

By jdmimic at 1:49 PM ON 11/13/09

I have to commend the marketers this time (never thought I'd see myself say that). From a scholarly, psychological, and marketing (well, since marketing is mostly a subset of applied psychology, that is perhaps redundant), perspective, the marketers and graphic designers did a good job I think.

I find it a rare occasion that marketers show any sense of education or intelligence that I found this advert rather refreshing. I could very well be giving them too much credit (they could have just been told it was a show about an Eve metaphor and they said, great! we can justify our naked model), but I prefer to give them kudos in the hopes they will try doing more intellectually stimulating adverts, which are rare things.

By Mandy at 2:27 PM ON 11/13/09

'A BSG fan would know this is not a spin off, but a prequel'

Okay, correction in my wording, a prequel. I think a prequel still counts as a spin off.

By tati at 2:33 PM ON 11/13/09

Zoe is technically dead, isn't she? Good enough reason to have very white skin....

By OrchidStation at 12:26 PM ON 11/15/09

I'm sure the promos will all look great. The series however...its like slutty-Eureka. I just don't get it. The pilot felt as if it was a story that could have been better told on earth but was set on Caprica to capitalize on BSG. Another epic fail from Syfy. :'(

By mcj251 at 10:24 AM ON 11/16/09

I am one of the female BSG fans that they are trying to appeal to with this Caprica series and here is what I think :

When I look at this I see naked teenage girl eating an apple. (yes, I realize in real life she is 22) I get the Eve eating the apple reference and I like it. What's missing is the Cylon part. I like the idea of her eyes being red but maybe they should have taken it a step further and made her look part human, part Cylon. Like the arm and hand holding the apple could be a Cylon arm. I mean isn't that the point...that the first cylon was part machine, part human??

Just my 2 cents.

By Libby at 5:37 PM ON 11/16/09

Very pretty girl, even if the apple screams "Twilight". Now please do an alternate shoot and use Callum Keith Rennie in the same pose. You know, for your female fans - the ones you keep leaving out?

By WeirdArchives at 3:34 PM ON 11/19/09

I have to admit the motif is interesting. Considering that the original mythos is polytheistic, the use of the Eve and the Apple is all the more stunning. Ms. Torresani is very brave to do such a photo, but it's not surprising since she has been known to go above and beyond her roles. I look forward to the series and only hope it does the GALATICA mythos justice. Granted, it can't be topped or duplicated, but perhaps it can be complimented.

By jenny at 3:24 AM ON 11/20/09

omg that is so hawt!!! i'm definitely gonna watch now!

By dlihcsnatas at 8:10 PM ON 11/20/09

The girl is very nice and I would love to have her for a weekend or two just for fun but lets get real. We are not going to see much more of her flesh other than this ad and the show may or may not be worth watching. Syfy has been going down hill lately so I am not expecting much out of this one. I will at least watch the premier just to see if it is worth getting into.

By cylonwannabe at 11:22 PM ON 11/25/09

Somebody said on here that Caprica isn't original and that BSG was far better. I beg to disagree. Both are wonderful. Original? What do you mean? Perhaps all tales have been told before, but not this way, that's for sure. I watched Caprica last night and I was stunned. I can hardly wait for the new series to start. I have no reason to expect this show to be any less fabulous than BSG was.

As for the artwork above, Zoe as Eve: Makes perfect sense.

By realistic at 11:21 AM ON 12/01/09

Do you people listen to yourselves. She is the daughter of a white couple so as far as the skin color goes .... The apple signifies the original sin -type of flaw the show is talking about. The dead daughter might be a road to why she's so deadly white not that its a steal from twilight. Good Luck to the writers showing a society capable of space travel when it hasnt been made apparent at all in the pilot as to how far along they are. Would have to guess the discovery to "the jumping -FTL drive" is yet to come

By crapbob17 at 2:29 PM ON 12/11/09

Does anyone know why scifi is now called syfy?

By Swag at 8:02 PM ON 12/11/09

You people are seeing way too much into this.

It's an ad. It's good.

The image hasn't been comped, though it has of course been shopped (like every other ad you'll ever see). The hand is the correct size and hasn't been enlarged or anything. Her hair looks like it may have been added to, but that could just be the jpeg artifact.

The metaphor makes sense, as does the lack of red eyes or robo-parts or anything like that. This isn't BSG. It's set in the same universe but it is a completely different type of show. It's solely a character drama, not a character drama/space fighting action show. People who watched BSG for the fighting won't like Caprica, people who watched for the characters will.

By PowerPack at 7:41 PM ON 12/12/09

Eve represents the human soul. The apple is a fruit. The fruit refers to the fruit of the tree of good and evil. This tree signifies the human world. (versus the tree of life, which signifies the other world). One must choose between the fruit of these two trees. One cannot eat from the tree of life is one is eating from the tree of good and evil or light and darkness (the world of opposites).

By surelyujest at 2:27 PM ON 12/14/09

jeez, people! The pic above? It's art, pure and simple. It carries certain obvious metaphors with it - innocence, choice, beginnings... It's good art.

As for the show? I just watched the extended cut of the pilot, and I thought it was great! True, it lacks action, as BSG had, but BSG carried much more drama than action, as anyone who watched the entire series should recognize. It's a good show, and syfy has obviously spent a lot of money on it - just as they obviously did for BSG.

Oh, yeah, for those of you who are expecting something really similar to BSG... why? Caprica is a prequel, set well before the "event." This is all starting before the First Cylon War. Expect things to be different. After all, if your own life were to be documented for the years 2001-2010, and then a prequel set from 1980-1990 (starring your younger self) were aired, it would be difficult to even recognize the tech from part 1 in the prequel.

.... ...

By kerneld at 2:15 AM ON 12/15/09

I prefer the short version, but can't really find fault with the full height version.

The temptation was for Daniel Graystone to bring his daughter back, so it doesn't make any sense for her image to have any resemblance to a cylon, that was not his desire.

By Eric at 3:10 AM ON 12/27/09

Another candidate for Photoshop failures blog.

By Shotgun Tony ;-> at 2:59 PM ON 12/29/09

"Caprica" has one colossal flaw, and it has absolutely nothing to do with this advert.

To call the new story of how the Cylons came into being non-canonical would be the understatement to end all understatements. I'll be blunt: "Caprica" sadistically sodomises established BSG canon regarding the Cylons' origins with a splinter-ridden telephone pole.

It was bad enough when BSG '04 declared the Cylons were built by humans, without even TRYING to reconcile this with the admission that Cylons who look human evolved from ones that didn't. NOW we're expected to stretch our suspension of disbelief far enough to wipe our minds of all prior canon and accept an origin story that has the Cylons created 58 years before the Destruction of the Twelve Colonies - and intended to look human from the outset!!

By Shotgun Tony ;-> at 1:48 PM ON 12/30/09

If a new "Star Trek" were produced, with McCoy presented as a hologram like the Doctor on "Star Trek: Voyager" on the unspoken understanding that we're expected to pretend the flesh-and-blood McCoy never existed...who would tolerate that?

The repeated acts of revisionism committed against the story of the Cylons' origin is no different

By David at 10:37 PM ON 12/31/09

The first time I saw the ad in the subway it stopped me dead in my tracks - and I wasn't the only one! That blend of uncanny beauty (okay, Photoshop-enhanced, but built on a real girl) and a blend of innocence with a whiff of wicked mischief -- the first glimmer of Cylon evil to come?

So: I only now found out about the show, due to this arresting ad, so I'd have to say it was successful. And, knowing nothing about the show, I did not see a teenager; I would have pegged her at about 20 or so. She doesn't look like any 16-year-old I've ever known; people who are saying she looks 13 have been watching too many shows with 20-year-olds playing high-schoolers.

By Ocean at 6:52 AM ON 01/02/10

Hey Shotgun Tony - your ridiculously over the top reaction about Caprica "sodomizing" the "canon" of BSG shows me that you didn't even watch the pilot! They Cylons are first represented there as robotic, mechanical centurions, but their inventor inserts the AI of his dead daughter into the machinery, with hopes to resurrect her... Come on, watch it before you further criticize what you don't understand!

I thought the pilot - and hopefully the upcoming series - was brilliant and very true to BSG, and am very looking forward to see what's coming next! I'm not sure though the the apple just represents the choice made by Zoe's dad... maybe there is something else coming? Like the choice Neo made in Matrix 3, which ultimately brought down Smith?

Hmmmm...

By bsgaddict at 7:46 PM ON 01/03/10

Guys do you research on the actress. She's 22 years old. Ok, so she's playing a teenager, obviously one who may or may not be legal (18) but she is legal for all intensive purposes. So although it does provoke some immediate "OMG" responses, it also gets you talking about it and therefore the show. Marketing 101!!!

By Sackslap at 8:03 PM ON 01/03/10

Even if she was underage its not like it shows anything. People just need to lighten up and take the stick out of there @$$.

By Shotgun Tony ;-> at 4:41 PM ON 01/04/10

with all due respect, Ocean, the fact still stands that the story of the Cylons' origin has been taken from "created over 1000 years ago by reptilian aliens" to "created 58 years ago by humans" without explanation or canonical reconciliation. I stand by my post AND its over-the-top hubris ;->

@ crapbob17 and ellie
Q: Why change from SciFi to Syfy?
A: Marketing idiots, but I'm being redundant.

Shysters were also involved as an entry at Wikipedia says "Network officials also noted that, unlike the generic term "sci fi" which represents the entire science fiction genre, the term "Syfy" can be protected by trademark and therefore would be easier to market on other goods or services without fear of confusion with other companies' products."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syfy

By WilSpeaking at 9:33 AM ON 01/13/10

Wow! Arresting, alluring with eyes that are both knowing yet innocent and grabs your attention and won't let you go. The people who did this image did a good job, it works and it reminds me of early SF book cover art. I do wonder if the near Mona Lisa smile was intentional or just luck. There is no doubt that the actress is beautiful, I hope to enjoy the show.
To those of you who have gave analysis of the composition ideas within the image I tend to agree but won't repeat it here, you already said it. I would like to reiterate the offer of choice in the once bitten apple, do you want a bite too?

To the prudes, I have tolerance issues, get a life.

By Wisdom at 9:13 PM ON 01/15/10

The ad is outstanding, and based on reading many of the comments here, I understand why so many great ideas get lost in our society- because they sail over the lower IQ's of the majority of Americans. Our nation is dirt-dumb, it appears.

The Eve metaphor is as clear as possible. She's the origin of the Cylons, true- but as we know from the end of BSG, she is also OUR Eve here on Earth (due to the outcome of the series).

Everyone is reading WAY too much into her skin color- that's just basic Art 101. The skin goes perfectly with the bright blue eyes and jet black hair and bright red apple. It's a stark contrast image, and that's all there is to it. Not everyone in the world cares about or has even bothered to read/watch Twilight.

The prudes thumping their bibles about her appearing "child-like" are the worst of the lot. As has been noted, the actress is 22, her character is 16. And, as anyone with a brain knows, the age of consent laws are inherently broken, flawed concepts with no shred of logic within them. This particular character, as established in the pilot, at 16, is fully developed emotionally and physically for sex. Also, it's a science fiction story, meaning that on their world, they may have gotten their laws right, and created laws that actually protect the CHILDREN - 8, 9, 10... instead of the young adults - 14-17... that, based on their physical/emotional development, SHOULD be engaging in sex- as sex is the fundamental pinnacle of human existence.

Our nation would be so very much better off if there weren't prudes whining about (non)nudity while simultaneously screaming about their right to have guns (getting school kids shot up and causing far, far more deaths than saving lives.)

Ah, and lastly- the fanboys! Hey, Mr. "Canon"... This is BSG 2.0- your "canon" for the original Battlestar only applies to that telling of the story, not the new one. The NEW BSG has its own canon, and so there is no issue whatsoever.

Caprica is going to be a relationship show- not at all like BSG. So if you're going to tune in and look for the same drama and action found on BSG, you won't. If you come looking for quality character-driven Sci-Fi, it's going to be a good place to get that. Since there aren't any character-driven Sci-Fi shows on TV other than Lost, ending this year, Caprica will help fill that void.

It seems like people need to open their minds far more, and give just a *glimmer* of effort to think for once in their lives instead of insta-whining!
