Eastwick's canceled, so why's it still on the air?

\<i\>Eastwick\<\/i\>\'s canceled, so why\'s it still on the air?

Considering its sad, sad ratings, no one should be surprised to hear that ABC has decided not to order any more episodes of Eastwick, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But even though that decision effectively cancels the series, ABC has nevertheless said it will air all 13 episodes of the witchy show's original order, and Eastwick remains on the schedule through November.

Guess ABC has conveniently forgotten it earlier called Eastwick a "quiet success" because of the 8.53 million viewers who sampled the pilot and because it started beating NBC's ratings-challenged Jay Leno Show (no big feat). But apparently that success was a little too quiet, and things never got better for the series: Only 4.60 million people watched Eastwick last week.

The drama—based on the John Updike novel and the film The Witches of Eastwick—is about three women who discover they have supernatural powers and the mysterious man they are drawn to, who just might be Satan. The series was created by Maggie Friedman and stars Lindsay Price, Jaime Ray Newman and Rebecca Romijn as the witches.

Other shows in trouble right now include Fox's Dollhouse—which was pulled off the network for November sweeps—and Fringe, which faces the toughest competition on television. Meanwhile, two new shows have done well enough to get a full season pickup, including The CW's Vampire Diaries and ABC's FlashForward.

"Considering its sad, sad ratings, no one should be surprised to hear that ABC has decided not to order any more episodes of Eastwick, according to The Hollywood Reporter."

More jabbs at ABC, ey Syfy-Wire?

Lost, FlashForward, & now V...three awesome Science Fiction shows by ABC/Disney. Wow! Add that to Del Toro's DoubleDareYou and the Mavel Comic buyout...I'm really hoping for an alternative SciFi channel by ABC/Disney.

By Tarc at 11:44 PM ON 11/10/09

Wow, back to the negative jabs at shows on other networks (that could very well air next year on Sci-fi since it's original programming is so... great. *snerkMansquito*snerk*) Seroiusly, Eastwisk is a lot more interesting than SGU - and so far better plotted and has better developed characters with charm. Stone throwing is pretty inappropriate. Eastwick has a small devoted fanbase... no different than the same sized fanbase that all Sci-fi shows want.

By cbing736 at 12:00 AM ON 11/11/09

Sucks that it's cancelled, but at least they're airing all the filmed episodes and a DVD release is probably likely. Too bad we'll probably never get to the "Daryl is SATAN!" reveal.

By Mandy at 12:06 AM ON 11/11/09

Though Eastwick is a sub-par urban fantasy / comedy at least they have one. And no, Syfy, I won't count a remake of a British TV show that's STILL running in it's original country.

I don't trust what Scifi wire says about other channel's fantasies.

They take a jab at flying saucers in V (never mind the stuff that appears in their Syfy original movies). Pot, Kettle, black.

They deliberately downplayed Being Human and very poorly described it, trying to discredit the show before it had even aired on BBC America and now Scifi's doing it's own rip off... I mean remake (While the original's still running).

So yeah, never trust a comment about a non-Syfy show being reviewed by an online magazine funded by Syfy.

By Quixote One at 12:48 AM ON 11/11/09

I'd just like to point out that the article doesn't say one negative word about the CONTENT of the show, it's only commenting on Eastwick's poor ratings and resulting cancellation.

I didn't choose to watch the show myself, but I am concerned with Fringe, which has been a favorite of mine since it premiered last season. Last week's episode took a serious ratings hit largely because many fans didn't know it was on, since there was the possibility of a Word Series game 7 that night instead -- and so, even after that game proved unnecessary, many program guides (and DVRs) DID NOT LIST (or record) it. I only just happened to look at TVGuide.com and see that it was on, and then had to manually set my DVR to record the show.

By Kevin at 1:01 AM ON 11/11/09

Don't care one way or the other if it is cancelled, but kudos to ABC for finally showing all filmed episodes.

Now if they'd just do that with Defying Gravity.....

By ABCRULESCxxTS at 4:03 AM ON 11/11/09

WHY BASH ABC WHY CANT YOU YANKS DO JOURNALISM INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING YOUR OWN AGENDA IE "sad sad"
THE MORE YOU DO THIS THE MORE YOUR A JOKE

By Tarc at 4:23 AM ON 11/11/09

@ Quixote One - The title is not only incorrect (the show wasn't cancelled, but rather no more episodes ordered, which is why all 13 original episodes will be aired), but also misleading and dismissive. ABC liked the show, but the public just didn't gravitate to it as well as, say, Vampire Diaries. Eastwick has ratings that nearly every (or all) current Sci-fi show(s) would envy.

By Klijpo at 7:01 AM ON 11/11/09

Firstly, writing in caps makes your argument worthless. Secondly, many of these posts are so obviously partizan that you could infer that they are all from ABC employees.

This is just reporting - there is no criticism implicit in this piece, so some folk need to calm down and stop the childishness.

Lost is overrated but fairly entertaining; V is quite intriguing; and Flash Forward excruciatingly awful. That's my opinion, which I can justify, if you want. Calling me names will not change my mind. Thank you.

By PALADIN at 7:20 AM ON 11/11/09

I just feel sorry for Rebecca Romijn ....

She seems cursed to star in failing tv series.

They come so close, but aren`t given a fair enough chance...and she is actually pretty good.

(The poor girl can`t spend her entire career in blue body paint, y`know.)

She`s become the female Eric Close

By bummed at 7:54 AM ON 11/11/09

I actually liked Eastwick, and have been watching it (ok, not live, but off my dvr) and haven't missed one yet. Where with Vampire diaries, I had watched the first 2, maybe 3, then gave up and didn't watch the rest of them, even though I had recorded them.
I though Eastwick was really starting to get good, with the ladies discovering new powers and all.

By theApocalypse at 8:58 AM ON 11/11/09

"Eastwisk is a lot more interesting than SGU - and so far better plotted and has better developed characters with charm. "

No it's not. Eastwick is a fine show. Very entertaining, but to say that it is better plotted/developed than SGU is just silly. It is a TV show about 3 hot witches, nothing more. Just like Charmed wasn't going to win any writing awards neither is eastwick. Good show, but SGU is better.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy is a niche audience. The ONLY time shows with Sci-Fi/ fantasy themes do really well is when they place very strict limits on how blatant the sci-fi/fantasy elements are.

By jedimom at 9:23 AM ON 11/11/09

yes galen commenter- Vamp Diaries!
I love it, I am 40!
it is a SUPER HIT for CW!

By Sandy at 9:31 AM ON 11/11/09

NNNNOOOO!!!! i LOVE eastwick!!! it is such a good show and so much fun! i'm tired of my scifi and fantasy shows getting cancelled! i'm sad now... :-(

By mykl at 9:38 AM ON 11/11/09

Once again if Syfy really cares about the genre and such they could pick up this show (which has promise I think) along with “Dollhouse” and “Fringe” and produce them… oh wait Syfy is too busy with more sh*tty “Stargate” shows along with the lame reality crap like “Ghost Hunters”... and lets not even start with the so called B-movies shown weekend nights.

By IronOre at 10:05 AM ON 11/11/09

Does this mean that Jaime Ray Newman will be back on Eureka? If so, score. I liked her character.

By mochellie at 10:25 AM ON 11/11/09

I tried Eastwick... don't get me wrong, but it never really grabbed me! It didn't seem like really riveting television, but then again throwing 3 beautfiul women into a sci-fi genre tv show isn't enough for me to actually watch the show.

And I LOVE how they neglected to mention that the reason "Dollhouse" hasn't gotten the same fate as "Eastwick" is because they have strong DVR ratings and an unbelievable downloading numbers for episodes off of itunes and amazon.

Yeah, thanks for really reporting the numbers there!

By Arlene at 11:11 AM ON 11/11/09

It's too bad. It's a good show. Perhaps ABC could've promoted the show more (there haven't been ads for it, on TV, since the show initially aired). I didn't understand why they didn't run Paul Gross (Darryl) out to each talk show, drawn in more viewers, as they did with Romjin, prior to the show's beginning? Women like the show and more women might have checked it out after 'getting a load of' Gross. Marketing 101. It's a good paced, well written, fun television show that frankly, I need right now, with the economy and all. Any hope of another network picking it up?!! If they tightened up the cutesy aspect of the writing and left everything else alone - but promoted it better - I think it would do well. My two cents. Hello? Other network?!

By DebbyS at 11:50 AM ON 11/11/09

Darn, if I'd known Paul Gross was on Eastwick, i would have watched it. I'll have to Netflix it eventually.

By FreakGirl at 11:57 AM ON 11/11/09

I watch it online when I am done with my other TV shows. Not my top list but it's "fresh". LOL @ her career in blue body paint.

Now, I have been following Eureka and hopefully Jaime Ray will be back, I liked how that turned out in the series.

I do hope they don't cancel Fringe. Vampire Diaries is... not bad. Hope it gets better.

Now, the use of caps, needless.

By Meezer at 11:58 AM ON 11/11/09

@Klijpo

You obviously havent been reading scifi wire for long. They love pointing out the failures of others while ignoring their own.

Reposting an old post.

@scifi wire staff. I wonder if one of your shows had these ratings would you call it "dead show stink"?
From your own article last week:
Eastwick (ABC)
Last week's ratings: 5.06 million viewers
SGU: Stargate Universe (Syfy)
Ratings from week two: 2.4 million viewers
Sanctuary (Syfy)
Season premiere ratings: nearly 1.9 million viewers (love the nearly in there BTW)
Apparently you only brought this to our attention because your shows dont need much veiwership to survive and you revel when better shows fail on other networks. If Eastwick fails, maybe you can remove the "nearly" from your ratings estimates.

By Smoke at 12:49 PM ON 11/11/09

>It is a TV show about 3 hot witches, nothing more.

Actually, it is something more. As an Updike fan, I have to say EASTWICK is actually quite good, and has held my attention better than the obnoxious characters on SGU. Btw, I'm a guy, with guy tastes. I tuned me in some Milano when CHARMED was on but didn't follow it. I made time for EASTWICK. Some surprising things are going on there, both in the acting and writing.

It's a damnsight better than the crap SyFy shows on a regular basis. Too bad ABC's not giving it a chance, while garbage like VAMPIRE DIARIES, whipped up to cash in on TWILIGHT, is cashing in on TWILIGHT.

I've made an effort to follow FRINGE, but I'm not sure why. The pseudoscience certainly isn't any better than supernatural mumbo-jumbo... can't say the plot or dialogue are superior to the competition, either.

By TheGigaShadow at 12:57 PM ON 11/11/09

I knew Eastwick was going to be a loser as soon as I heard about it, so no surprises there.

If Fringe is in trouble Fox has only themselves to blame. Had they left it on Tuesday where it was prospering it would still been fine. The move to the already way too crowded Thursday made no sense. But then network execs are generally morons.

By dek at 1:01 PM ON 11/11/09

I really like the concept of Eastwick but it was a sub par show. I love anything witchy-like or fantasy genre. Rebecca Romijn is a great actress. Would like to see her in other things.

By Allison&Jack at 1:15 PM ON 11/11/09

Oh please, Fringe is fine. It's keeping Fox alive on a night they have traditionally been slaughtered or completely none existent on. A night that just so happens to be the most important night of the week for ad dollars.

By Mandy at 1:41 PM ON 11/11/09

A true scifi geek wouldn't have written half the articles being published by Scifi Wire in the last two months.

The seven sins of Scifi Wire:

1. All these "Hot Babe" articles are degrading us female Science fiction fans. It's offensive, knock it off! We're not all thirteen-year-old boys or forty-year-old virgins.

2. In their list of hot vampires they call the version of Lestat that feeds on innocent people "angelic" and the one that feeds on Evil doers "Deranged." Why? Well, it's either A. Homophobia because the first incarnation of Lestat was bisexual or B. A bias against Tom Cruise because of his weird personal life. Either way it dishonours the work of Anne Rice, the character's creator.

3. Their list of "Hot Witches" included Mab, the FAERY Queen. Do they think we don't read the articles and just look at the pretty pictures? They leave off Paul Blackthorne as Harry Dresden but put a Faery on there. What the Hell?!

4. These gloating articles about the faults and failures of other networks Scifi is very crude and low brow. But then again so are the rampant articles about "Hot Scifi Chicks." I'm sorry, is it nineteen fifty again? Are there no female science fiction fans? When did Scifi degrade back into sexism and misogyny?

5. You have to love the irony that Scifi Wire was dismissive and deliberately misdescribed Being Human when it first aired on BBC Ameria (making it sound like some cheesy sitcom) and now, because it's a hit, Syfy wants to do a remake (even though the original's still going) and clearly doesn't really get the show's meaning.

6. Claiming a flying saucer landing would be impossible because we'd see it. Never mind cloaking technology, the nature of advanced tech in Science fiction, or the fact that Syfy has made for TV movies about giant insects and zombies so bad they'd make Ed Wood blush. Pot, kettle, black.

7. Syfy and Scifi Wire has started to treat us like we're idiots or all overly horny, socially inept teenage boys. Try to remember, Scifi Wire / Syfy, your demographic has never been thirteen-year-old Boys. The Scifi Channel (when it was still The Scifi Channel) aired Dark Shadows, the sixties Gothic Soap as it's very first show. Try to remember those of us who watched from the beginning. Stop trying to shove us away in a vulgar effort to narrow your audience that you claimed to want to expand.

By Kenn at 2:55 PM ON 11/11/09

I have to say, what an idiotic question. Why *shouldn't* they run the last episodes?

By John Duncan Yoyo at 3:35 PM ON 11/11/09

Gee actually running all the episodes ordered is now a bad thing. I think the defying Gravity people would bed to differ.

By jb at 5:06 PM ON 11/11/09

Honestly I simply cannot believe that a show like Fringe is competing to stay on the air. This is probably (next to Lost) the most intelligent show on the air right now. Vampire Diaries is definitely much better than Eastwick, but seriously, not by much.

By Omen at 7:21 PM ON 11/11/09

Okay get Jaime back to Eureka Carter is waiting with the handcuffs;-)

By Partisan at 7:59 PM ON 11/11/09

Second THAT Omen!!

I was rooting for Jaime but I really, reallllllly want to see her back on Eureka.

By shadow at 8:24 PM ON 11/11/09

If The Witches of Eastwick does not have the old dinosaurs like Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher, then it is not Eastwick at all!

By Crusader K at 10:03 PM ON 11/11/09

This news really irks me. I thought the show was witty, mysterious, funny, magical and yes...sexy. I wanted to see the mystery of Darryl unfold and see what the three would be capable of. I was locked into ABC on Wednesday nights from 9 - 11 but I guess not anymore. Damn.

By Pfenix at 10:10 PM ON 11/11/09

silver lining: Tess should be back on Eureka!

By mike at 10:23 PM ON 11/11/09

Wow. Some of you take negative news about the shows you like way too personally.

By divephotog at 5:17 AM ON 11/12/09

'Twas inevitable... it was just a rehash of everything 'Charmed', and surprised there are not lawsuits all over the place for copyright infringement, etc from the 'Charmed' camp...

Besides, it was more 'pseudo-sci' than sci-fi,so better it is dead before it spreads, like 'Ghost Whisperer', now on Ion and WE, besides SyFY... -kh

By Meezer at 9:30 AM ON 11/12/09

Tess back on Eureka was never a problem.

However, should “Eastwick” be a success, Newman says the schedules for both shows coordinate enough that she won’t have to miss time being on either one.

Sad they cancel shows like this and Invasion and leave crap like "The Forgotten" on.

By Zeta at 8:31 PM ON 11/12/09

I am very mad with Eastwick being canceled, how ever they most likley will be moving Ugly Betty to that night so it does not end up being cancled on the friday night grave yard

By Amy at 8:41 PM ON 11/12/09

this is bullcrap. finally a show woman like, and ABC cancels it!!! wtf. i guess its okay to have all that stupid football and crap on tv for men. Vampire Diaries is about lame. WHY THE HECK TAKE OFF A GOOD SHOW??? ABC is really messing up

By Amy at 8:43 PM ON 11/12/09

Eastwick was the only show that I set to record all the episodes on my dvr... arg.. Syfy needs to pick this up

By Matty'O at 10:02 AM ON 11/13/09

Now that's a shame. Eastwick was one of the better new shows of the season. It didn't deserve to get canceled so soon.

Hey, Syfy, do us all a favor and pick this series up before the actors all scatter to the four winds. And let's face it, after you let Jericho die when it was well within your power and budget to give it a new home, you owe us BIG!

By Erika at 11:23 AM ON 11/19/09

I am very upset that they would cancel Eastwick. Considering that I work very early in the morning I would still stay up to watch it. It's a very good show. I don't even watch ABC and that was the only show I would watch most of my shows would be on CW. Maybe CW should buy it out and put it on a different showtime I bet that it would get lots of ratings.

By Melissa at 8:41 PM ON 11/22/09

Go to www.ABC.com and click on contact us.....email them regarding the cancellation of Eastwick... I just emailed them and I got a computer response..I guess they just send it out automatically. I am going to see if I can find a number to call them. MAYBE IF WE ALL EMAIL ABC...AND CALL THEM???????

By cardsam at 11:31 PM ON 12/16/09

Fring,Eastwick, and V..All great show's.However, what's the deal about V. it was a very short season. Also, i can live if Eastwick is over but would prefer it try another season. Now if FOX quit's Fring I will never forgive them and ABC dose'nt know when when they'v got a good thing. I would have to say that True Blood is the best thing out there
(season 3 June 2010 HBO).

By lynn at 1:03 AM ON 01/03/10

sigh the pettition to save Eastwick Please!!!!!!!!!!! Great show!!!!!!!

I am so upset this show has been taken off the air. Finally a show I like and am literally hooked on and ABC decides to be a**h***s and cancel it!!Aside from OLTL I dont know that i'll ever watch your channel again!!!

By Melissa Ray at 7:10 PM ON 01/09/10

THis really sucks. This is one of the few tv show that I really looked forward to seeing. I can't believe that Ugly Betty is still on much less replaced this show. What a bunch of idiots!! How do I sign this petition. I might not watch this channel again

By toosh at 12:08 AM ON 01/10/10

Eastwick is one of the houses favorite shows. My roommates and husband all enjoy it. I hope it stays on. We all look forward to watch the show after it has been recorded! Please dont go!

By bradleykm at 5:05 PM ON 01/19/10
