Forget Twilight: Priest has kick-ass vampires

Forget \<i\>Twilight\<\/i\>: \<i\>Priest\<\/i\> has kick-ass vampires
Karl Urban at Monday's Star Trek DVD/Blu-ray party

In an era of movies about sparkly vampires and TV shows about dreamy teen vampires, it's refreshing to hear that the upcoming movie Priest, loosely based on a Korean comic series, will deal mainly with the kick-ass, bloodthirsty subset of the undead.

That's what Star Trek's Karl Urban told us Monday night at the DVD/Blu-ray release party in Los Angeles. Urban plays the film's villain, Black Hat, and said the movie deals with the war between humans and vampires that follows a vampire apocalypse.

"The film is set in a post-apocalyptic vampire world at the end of generations of war between vampires and humans," Urban said. "That's where this story takes place. I think that it's going to have some pretty dark moments in it, that's for sure. Dude, it's not Twilight. I do have fangs."

In terms of production value, Urban said that director Scott Stewart packed Priest with sci-fi atmosphere a la Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. "He shot this scene on the old Warner Brothers lot where they shot Blade Runner, and he really out-Ridleyed Ridley," Urban said. "It looked amazing. Crowd scenes, people speaking different languages: It was literally just jumping off of the screen. Literally, the [assistant director] said, 'Look, if you can speak a foreign language, please, we want to hear it.' It was amazing."

The movie will also feature hard-core vampire action. Paul Bettany plays the film's hero, simply called Priest, and Urban described the no-holds-barred fight scenes they're filming. "I stomped on his finger and smashed my elbow into his face, gave him a cut lip, and he still worked, so he's a professional," Urban said. "I did extensive fight training for this, because, literally, one-third of the movie is action-based stuff."

We're in! Priest opens Oct 1. 2010.

I've had enough of vampires altogether!

Let's pit the vampires of Twilight against the vampires of Priest, and then we can just mop-up whats left and be done with them.

Three things:

1.) bloodthirsty vampires are not a 'subset.'

The preening losers from crap like Twilight are the 'subset', and one that I don't care for.

Vampires are MONSTERS. They are looters, thieves and rapists because they need to ASSAULT PEOPLE AND DRINK THEIR BLOOD to survive. Stripping them of their weaknesses and giving them ways around their inherent dark nature (such as feeding on animals for sustenence) only works for me in very special circumstances (such as with Angel, where he was practically an island unto himself in the Buffy-verse in that he detested what he was.) Mostly, they should be the animal-criminals you see in movies like 30 Days Of Night.

2.) 'Out-Ridley'ed Ridley?'

On BLADE RUNNER?

Right.

So this director of Priest managed to beat Ridley Scott, the master of visual technical prowess, at his own game? And even beat the movie that, by far, is Scott's best technidal achievement?

I'll believe it when monkeys fly out of Karl Urban's butt.

3.) Despite Urban's proclamations, I like him as an actor and will definitely see Priest as I like the comic book and think the setting is unique for a vampire story on the silver screen.

At least it isn't a bunch of pretty emo kids cutting themselves and looking tragically beautiful as they do it.

@Taiso: Right on. Vampires aren't meemy prinny suckface emo models that "glitter" and walk around in the daylight sweeping lonely awkward teenage girls off their feet gallantly. Screw that and screw those who'd like to think so. "Oh Edward, sigh" SMACK!

By Capt Hal Jordan at 1:15 PM ON 11/19/09

I've said it once and I'll say it again...The ONLY time Vampires need sparkle is right before they burst into flames and explode. Where's Blade when you need him? Kudos to Scott Stewart.

If people were as passionate about voting/government as they are about vampires this would be a different world.

Halleluja! I hate vampires, but even more I hate the cheese-wad vampires we've had inflicted on us since 'Interview'!!
If ya gotta have a vampire, at least make sure he's a _BAD GUY_, not someone you halfway feel sorry for!

@Taiso, You slay me.

By tati at 12:32 PM ON 11/20/09

I think I saw the red-band trailer for this, awhile back? Or, maybe I'm thinking of Legion? Whichever it was, Paul Bettany was in it, and it was frakking amazing :)

By Shaun at 9:23 AM ON 11/23/09

"It's a shame he literally doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word: literally"

actually, without exaggerating, he does. the word has multiple meanings. gee...

By Maria at 10:23 PM ON 12/24/09

WTF? The Priest manhwa isn't even about vampires. It's about a priest with revenge against fallen angels. Why the heck did they change the villains into vampires?
