Fringe audience falls, FlashForward fades

\<i\>Fringe\<\/i\> audience falls, \<i\>FlashForward\<\/i\> fades

Thursday night is shaping up as the biggest night in sci-fi TV, but viewers of Fox's Fringe and other series apparently didn't get the memo.

A new episode of Fringe last night saw its ratings fall to a series low, possibly because many fans didn't realize that no World Series game seven meant a new episode of their favorite show.

Fringe ratings fell 23 percent, to 5 million viewers, The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed blog reported:

ABC won the night, with its lineup slipping about 4% across the board: "FlashForward" (8.5 million viewers, 2.6 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) ...

Returning after a two-week hiatus, Fox's drama lineup had "Bones" (8.5 million, 2.5) down 11%. At 9 p.m., "Fringe" (5 million, 1.7) hit a serious low, falling 23%.

Things were also bad for the boys at Supernatural, whose audience fell 14 percent.

But there was good news for fans of The CW's Vampire Diaries: The show boasted 4.2 million viewers, maintaining its recent gain in audience.

So ... have you stopped watching Fringe? FlashForward? Supernatural?

Fringe & Flash Forward are awesome! Fringe didn't show up in the listing last night due to the World Series. I'll catch it on HULU.

By silverflare05 at 1:08 PM ON 11/06/09

Never stopped watching Supernatural...Those guys are eye-candy :D

Down with the vampire craze!

By ph4ntom at 1:09 PM ON 11/06/09

This is one of the reasons I love DVRs, Fox is terrible about long breaks in a series, i.e. Dollhouse taking month long hiatus. I mean I understand that the World Series inteferes with regular TV programming but they do this all the time. Heck, I'm surprised that they didn't cancel Fringe after the first few episodes, they do that with all the good ones.

By Just a guy at 1:10 PM ON 11/06/09

Yes, yes we have.

By Jp at 1:13 PM ON 11/06/09

Yeah, a big problem with Fringe last night was that a lot of DVRs still had the World Series game 7 listed, instead of what was actually on. My DVR both failed to notify me that it was on, and failed to record it. I imagine many people had similar incidents.

By ZFT at 1:14 PM ON 11/06/09

I really liked Fringe Season 1. However, Season 2 has gotten off to a terrible start. All these standalone episodes are really killing the show. FOX doesn't have a clue of how to handle Sci-Fi shows - those morons think that they can sell it for syndication better if most of the episodes are self-contained. However, what they end up doing is alienating the core audience. Great job, idiots!

Last night's episode felt like the most generic of X-Files episodes. I couldn't believe how boring it was. The plot elements were pointless and will have no repercussions outside of this episode. I'm really getting fed up with this kind of garbage.

By PALADIN at 1:15 PM ON 11/06/09

FRINGE just keeps getting better.

I don`t take one bad night as indicative of a trend.

By Carpe at 1:16 PM ON 11/06/09

DVR's are only as good as the providers programming guide. Cablevision had game 7 of the World Series listed, so no automatic Fringe recording (but I manually recorded "game 7" and fast forwarded to Fringe).

Flash Forward is becoming the new Lost with a long story arc and no answers. I’ve already bailed.

By smythe at 1:18 PM ON 11/06/09

This is why TV ratings are stupid but fox apparently only care about them. the ratings probably fell because the guides on most cable companies never updated and it still reflected the damn series therefore people missed the recording. STFU and report on something of value.

By Rick at 1:20 PM ON 11/06/09

Yeah, we stopped watching both. We really tried to get into them, but we have enough trouble making time to watch tv at all anymore (between work and my Xbox, there's no time left).

By DerelictZombie at 1:26 PM ON 11/06/09

Fringe is aight, though I knew there was no world series game I thought they would just show repeats...whoops. I never miss Supernatural, though I have been a bit disappointed last season and some this season I don't ever miss one.

By Thogar at 1:28 PM ON 11/06/09

We all love Fringe and FastForward at our house. We also wish Fox would move Fringe back to Mondays...or just somewhere so that all the good genre isn't crammed together at one time on one night.

We need the networks to help us help them.

By Beakernx01 at 1:35 PM ON 11/06/09

FOX IS COMPLETELY MORONIC! How do you expect fans to tune in to a show after two weeks off the air with NO PROMOS and my cable's guide wasn't updated?! I figured if there wasn't a baseball game, they'd either update the guide or put on reruns for a week to give themselves time to promo the new episodes. They're idiots! Of course I'll watch online, but that was just stupid.

By Pete at 1:36 PM ON 11/06/09

I was another victim of inaccurate DVR listings. Fringe didn't record because the world series was listed. Even if people weren't relying on DVR, they would have looked at the onscreen programming guide and thought Fringe wasn't on. FOX should not have went ahead and aired a new episode this week - it was inevitable that a load of regular Fringe viewers would not have known it would have been on this week.

I just hate having the world series disrupt fall programming.

By jfriese at 1:36 PM ON 11/06/09

Still watching and enjoying all three.

By captainwhat at 1:37 PM ON 11/06/09

I never got into Fringe, however I am following FlashForward. I watch everything on Hulu, and just leave the television to the other members of the household.

By Maxz at 1:39 PM ON 11/06/09

I'm done with Flash Forward. I can't take the bad inter-personal drama anymore.

By Aepelwine at 1:41 PM ON 11/06/09

I watch the comedy lineup on NBC on Thursdays, so I catch Fringe and FlashForward the next day on Hulu.

By CrazyOkie at 1:48 PM ON 11/06/09

As has been mentioned by others, most probably didn't know it was on because many of the TV guides, etc... weren't showing it. I happened to be one of the lucky ones, I was checking something else and happened to see it was on. Very poor job by Fox on promoting the fact that it was on. Next week's ratings will be back up I predict. Season 2 has been very strong so far.

By OldManInOhio at 1:55 PM ON 11/06/09

Perhaps fans of both excellent shows were BORED TO TEARS BY ENDLESS WEEKS OF SPORTS SHOWS INSTEAD OF FRINGE!

By Tempus13 at 1:56 PM ON 11/06/09

I am enjoying Flash Forward. It's an interesting premise and the mystery still has me interested. It's also compelling to see how the characters either try tofight or accept the visions of their futures.

By maglore at 1:57 PM ON 11/06/09

Had to manually set DVR to record Fringe
Still watch all 3 but usually over weekend when I get time!
All great show!!!

By jfam54 at 1:57 PM ON 11/06/09

I've stopped watching FlashForward. It just didn't keep my attention after the first episode. Fringe is awesome! I didn't realize it was on until I checked my DVR. I'll watch it over the weekend.

By thewatchmaker at 1:58 PM ON 11/06/09

My DVR failed to record Bones and Fringe last night like so many others. Hulu for me too. How stupid of FOX not to promo the shows would be new? Not that's see the promos anyway, because I haven't watched FOX in weeks because of baseball.

As for Supernatural - best show on TV - only series that gets better every single season. Thank you Kripke.

By Angel-2b at 1:59 PM ON 11/06/09

I watch all the shows on Thursday night. Bones, Vampire Diaries, Fringe and Supernatural. I actually quit watching CSI and Greys last season.

By OldManInOhio at 2:00 PM ON 11/06/09

Networks hog the airwaves with stupid sports shows in prime time instead of showing established programming. I think some fans were bored out of their minds by all the sports and simply stopped watching TV.

By Carpe at 2:10 PM ON 11/06/09

Sports may be stupid to some but they are big revenue machines. NBC's Sunday Night Football and ESPN's Monday Night Football are routinely in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings. The World Series and the Super Bowl is usually in the top 5.

By Fedaykin at 2:16 PM ON 11/06/09

Because Flash Forward turned out to be cookie-cutter crap that can't be bothered to take its own premise the least bit seriously, yes I stopped watching.

And I stopped watching Fringe after the first episode when it seemed like it was going to be an X-Files rip off with less science and more squirm.

And I don't watch Supernatural because the commercials are bad and the WB is lame.

By bepsiboop at 2:26 PM ON 11/06/09

the dvr problem and all the good shows on the same nights is why I watch just as much online as I do on tv. Love Fringe but supernatural is disappointing me this season. hated last nights episode. wish they would just spread these shows out during the week. nothing good on wednsdays could put some there.

By DEC2955 at 2:27 PM ON 11/06/09

"" So ... have you stopped watching Fringe? FlashForward? Supernatural? ""

Can you say "(Digital) Video Recorder"

Some shows you have to watch live due to them being 'game shows' which local (talk) radio DJ's talks about the next morning during drive time, or due to time shifts due to both national or local sports programs preempting these shows to a later time, so I find that I will watch these shows such as "Survivor" live and watch the other shows at a later time.

By BVK at 2:32 PM ON 11/06/09

I'm loving Flash Forward, but up to this point (like many other sci-fi fans who also have a life & a job,) I've had to catch it on Hulu after the fact. But yes, I will DEFINITELY keep watching, and hopefully I'll be watching it in real-time by next Thursday night!

By cogadh at 2:52 PM ON 11/06/09

Do I still watch these shows? Technically I don't watch any of them in a way that matters to the networks, I get all my TV via the internet now. Fringe was OK at first, but it lost me before the end of the first season. Flashforward didn't even last past the first episode, though it is still showing up in my Hulu queue, so I might watch it eventually. Supernatural actually lost me after season 2, but for some reason I got back into it with the end of last season and I've kept up with it for this season. In comparison to those other shows, Supernatural doesn't take itself too seriously, which is way more entertaining to watch.

By Robert at 2:58 PM ON 11/06/09

Yes, yes, and no. Supernatural lacked a little of the solid mythos and thriller aspect, but made up for it with those parodies and revelations.

By jhawks1510 at 3:01 PM ON 11/06/09

Flash Forward and Stargate SGU are both big winners as far as I'm concerned. Caprica (based on the pilot movie) has good promise. V, however, had massive plot/writing holes in the first episode. It opened to huge ratings, but it won't survive unless it gets better. Or maybe people would rather watch shows that are dumbed down.

By JeSinclair at 3:09 PM ON 11/06/09

I only watch shows via internet or DVR since my work schedule is such that I won't give up work to watch a tv show, no matter how good.

That being said, I did just that for the World Series (New Yorker here, go Yanks!) and as such stopped watching all live shows for the games.

When I do watch the shows, I like Flash Forward, but I do see it like Lost - Great season 1 that sets everything up great, and like a balloon, as the air slowly let's out, you are left a bit deflated but are stuck watching it anyway.

For Fringe: well if it walks like a duck, acts like a duck, and quacks like a duck... it's a Duck. Fringe=modern day X-Files and I never cared for X-Files. (and for those who want to say it's nothing like X-Files... as far as promos show, they investigate the strange, paranormal, etc. etc... IE: Close enough)

What's Supernatural? If it's on WB, that's probably why I haven't heard of it. I don't really care for the teen angst station.

By crichton007 at 3:19 PM ON 11/06/09

Fringe has never been very good to begin with but I watch everything off of the DVR so I will be watching FlashForward tonight.

By MDS9 at 3:25 PM ON 11/06/09

How can we watch a show if we don't know is on!!!

By SciFiGeek81 at 3:27 PM ON 11/06/09

I never got into Fringe and I gave up on FlashForward after 1 and half episodes. Its way too dumbed down for me. Too many flashbacks--no pun intended--and not enough sitting still long enough to tell me something new. *shrugs*

As for Supernatural, I haven't stopped watching since it started. :)

By BackStJoe at 3:31 PM ON 11/06/09

A new episode of Fringe last night saw its ratings fall to a series low, possibly because many fans didn't realize that no World Series game seven meant a new episode of their favorite show.

Possibly? What kind of reporting is this? Of course people didn't know! I found out a 1/2 hour before it was supposed to start and texted people.

By PBMom at 3:32 PM ON 11/06/09

DirecTV had Fringe listed correctly and it was DVR'd for me. I was watching the news stuff on the Fort Hood tragedy (I'm in Texas). I'm probably going to have to go on-line though to view the part of Fringe that was interrupted for the press conference from Fort Hood by our local Fox station.

Our family watches Fringe and Flash Forward (which means demographic of 18-49 male and female). I have no opinion on Supernatural.

By Sarah at 3:34 PM ON 11/06/09

You wanna know why Fringe has low ratings? Supernatural is on at the same time. Most people will pick Supernatural first.

By TheGigaShadow at 3:37 PM ON 11/06/09

"possibly because many fans didn't realize that no World Series game seven meant a new episode of their favorite show."

Possibly? That's exactly why. I can not think of another time in my life when this happened (no game 7) and the network didn't air a rerun. Never in my memory did they run a new episode. They had to know that even loyal viewers wouldn't be tuned in.

And, I knew that some BS story like this would rear it's head about the ratings falling to a new low. It's hardly accurate. If Fox is unhappy with last night's ratings for Fringe they have only themselves to blame.

By PA_Alaskan at 3:41 PM ON 11/06/09

We "taped" Fringe with the intention of watching it when the family was available but our VCR went on the fritz. We'll be getting it off Hulu now too. One week is definitely not a trend unless your a Democrat.

By Erik Kolacek at 4:10 PM ON 11/06/09

Putting Fringe on at the same time as Supernatural was a bad move. Don't make me choose.

By scifire at 4:11 PM ON 11/06/09

GO Vampire Diaries! :-)

By Lazlo at 4:16 PM ON 11/06/09

I noticed new eps of Fringe were not being aired like two weeks ago. I guess I forgot the announcement of the world Series. Anyway I made sure to check the official Fringe website for it's return date and programmed the alarm on my cell accordingly. What's the point of technology if your not going to use it? Also why are people saying Fringe deals with the paranormal? It deals with Fringe science. I can't remember one episode concerning ghost, demons, magical artifacts, etc a la X-Files. It is similar to X-Files in that they investigate odd cases. Everything has been done before. Get over it! Still watching Flashforward, it's ok. Not sure about SGU. I've never liked any of the Stargate series. This one started off well but it's starting to lose me. We shall see. Don't care for Supernatural. The captcha on this site is driving me insane! LOL!

By Kimmy at 4:25 PM ON 11/06/09

I still watch all three!

By scifimom at 4:29 PM ON 11/06/09

Love Fringe...taped last night but haven't watched it yet. The jury is still out on Flash Forward. I watched the first 2 episodes but haven't seen any since and am not bothered by that. So, it's probably not going to survive. I never watch Supernatural in real time. I buy the seasons on DVD and watch them later...during daylight hours. As I tell my husband, I don't like horror, but this show is oddly compelling.

By CRDFilm at 4:30 PM ON 11/06/09

Wait...what?!?! There was a new episode on?!!?? Crap! That certainly could explain the drop in ratings this week if no one knew and the DVRs didn't pick it up. Another thing, and I knew this would be a problem, was the boneheaded decision to put Fringe up against Supernatural. Sure Grey's and CSI have bigger audiences, but Fringe and Supernatural share more of the same audience so of course the ratings are going to drop. Just another example of stupidity running rampant at Fox.

By highland3 at 4:46 PM ON 11/06/09

No way would I stop watching either series!!! They are PVR'd and waiting for the weekend. Working at 6am means I miss watching most shows live.

By whyfoxwhy at 5:16 PM ON 11/06/09

This is entirely FOX's fault, they did not update any of the guide information to push out to providers. Now my DVR did not record this and I have to cross my fingers and hope HULU has captions so I can watch it.

By remixthis at 5:20 PM ON 11/06/09

I DVR all three all the time...usually setting a series recording on DVR assures that new episodes are recorded no matter what...at least so far

By Lostlovefan at 6:16 PM ON 11/06/09

OMG! I would never stop watching these shows. Not just for the stories but the eye-candy. Dominic, Jared, and Jensen are definitely my threesome :)

By Nyarlathotep at 6:45 PM ON 11/06/09

couldnt care less about any of them, wake me up when someone does a good sci-fi show, ah hell guess ill be sleeping for an eternity...until the stars are right of course.

By sighfiedfan. at 6:48 PM ON 11/06/09

Why on earth would any scifi fan give up on watching Fringe when Syfy has completely given up on the genre and just puts on trite crap that barely registers as scifi these days. With the exception of BBCA, ABC and FOX, there is very very little decent scifi on tv these days.

By goodboy_stay at 7:24 PM ON 11/06/09

FOX NEEDS TO STOP WITH THE LONG HIATUSES!!!!!!!! I mean, don't they realize it's killing their own show's ratings. How can they expect to maintain hit shows?

By Silverdire at 9:08 PM ON 11/06/09

Like other people have already mentioned, we missed Fringe because the DVR didn't record it. Fox needs to re-air that episode and I'm sure they'll get their ratings back.

By A Reject So Shy at 10:53 PM ON 11/06/09

If I didn't see the article yesterday about Fringe being on last night I wouldn't of known. Tivo didn't change the MLB listing to Fringe and there was no commercials to hype up Fringe's return. Only if they would run all their shows with no breaks like 24. That's how you keep people watching.

Hopefully it was a fluke but I guess we'll see next week. I did watch Flash Forward.

By duneboat at 11:48 PM ON 11/06/09

three words: D-V-R. all 3 shows are excellent.
can not remember last time I watched a show while it aired, except for sporting events.

By Dave at 11:56 PM ON 11/06/09

A new Bones and Finge?! Son of a bitch! And what did Fox air tonight? A fracking Bones repeat! The Bumpuses are running Fox. The dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Last night's FlashForward was outstanding. Just amazing.

By comic at 1:16 AM ON 11/07/09

By oneeye at 7:08 AM ON 11/07/09

Still watching flashforward, and vampire diaries

By Thomas at 7:24 AM ON 11/07/09

Unfortunately, networks are still behaving like...networks, by placing good shows opposite each other in the same time slot. My whole family are big Survivor fans. So I torrent FlashForward for later. Watching it now, in fact.

By dennis at 11:13 AM ON 11/07/09

I still watch all these shows. My DVR recorded Fringe without any problems. Maybe I have a better cable company (Comcast)?

By krispymac at 1:21 PM ON 11/07/09

Basing programming and tv show popularity on almost strictly tv ratings is misleading. Being without a tv, i watch all of my shows online I hope the network executives take this ino account when planning prime time lineups.

By OldManInOhio at 1:57 PM ON 11/07/09

What the heck is "supernatural" and who broadcasts it?

By Omen at 7:56 PM ON 11/07/09

I was able to watch Fringe because as a Yankee fan I knew there was no Game 7:-)

By Scatmandu at 8:14 PM ON 11/07/09

Fringe was on last night? I hope my DVR caught it.

By banthra at 11:56 PM ON 11/07/09

Well those three are the only shows I watch on Thursdays and My DVR did not even record Fringe this past Thursday because it was set up to play the World Series. I was not a happy camper.
I love those three shows and I can not get enough of them.

By GotsDaSyfyDownLow at 10:22 AM ON 11/08/09

Hulu FTW!

By LoveFarscape at 2:55 PM ON 11/08/09

MY DVR DIDN"T RECORD IT!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!!

By markf at 6:45 AM ON 11/09/09

I always watched Fringe during season 1, then stopped when they began that ridiculous alternative universe nonesense. Ruined the show for me when you cant tell if you are wathcing characters you are supposed to root for or they are someone else entirely. Fringe had a great thing going but blew it, time to cancel them. .

By jamagill at 1:14 PM ON 11/09/09

Fringe has the same problem of everything JJA does, it requires that the viewer isn't paying enough attention to notice the plethora of plot holes, which are legion, annoying, and a sign that he doesn't think very much of his audiences intelligence.

By rtl3 at 1:51 PM ON 11/09/09

Fringe has greatly improved since they've gone to the single episode format. Stopped watching the first season because of all silly make-it-up-as-we-go sub plots, but now i'm back.Cutting down on the crazy scientist's screen time was another good movie—he's annoying and un-likable . Falsh Forward.. whatever I stopped watching Lost after season 2. Don't need another one.

By SciFiLover at 2:26 PM ON 11/09/09

DVR Fringe, FLASHFORWARD, Bones and SMALLVILLE (although it has greatly diminished)!! Supernatural, Vampire Diaries? NO, NO NO

By Kingcruiser at 2:49 PM ON 11/09/09

Fringe was also not listed here in San Diego for my DVR. Just happened to run across it listed on line just minutes before it started. This isone of those times that a repeat should have been inserted! You're going to repeat all the episodes at least once, good time for it so that when a quarter of your viewers don't know it's on, missing it isn't all that hurtful. Also, you would think that the networks would know that keeping the DVR listings up to date would be rather a priority with them; apparently not. How stupid is that?
FlashForward had a great pilot, but I was bored with it soon thereafter. It's not the basis of the show that's important, it's how you develop it afterwards: Think MASH, a comedy in an Army hospital during the Korean War? Cheers? A bunch of drunks in a neighborhood bar? Yet they ran forever. Even Gunsmoke? Sheriff in a small town. I only watched MASH of the three, but they ran forever and ever. Today's TV? Too many other options... Mistakes are deadly. Sanctuary killing off two popular characters? Bye bye Sanctuary...

By iloveannatorv at 3:58 PM ON 11/09/09

I have it saved on my DVR, just haven't watched it yet. Keep watching guys. I love this show.

By caien at 5:52 PM ON 11/09/09

not watch supernatural? I cant even process the idea

By zonker at 12:23 AM ON 11/10/09

this is another in a long long line of misinformed "critics" or so called entertainment reporters who cant seem to either get the facts straight or just dont do there homework. it is a fact that sci fi and drama shows including the serialized ones are dvr"d. sometimes up to 25 or 30 percent. they either need to get there facts straight or stop writing false statements. i dvr almost everything i watch. i might watch 5 percent of shows live and that is being generous.

By universal at 10:29 AM ON 11/10/09

Fringe ..Big Fan...definitly will continue watching !!! Flashforard ...im not sold yet....ill give it a few more episodes until i decide

By April at 4:35 PM ON 11/10/09

By Mike at 6:25 PM ON 11/13/09

Flashforward has been intriguing for me so far & I'm enjoying the cast. Fringe is a revised X-Files(which I loved) for me & just not that compelling although I do watch/dvr it each week. Gave up on Supernatural a few years ago.
