Filming on the pilot for Game of Thrones, adapted from the fantasy novel by George R.R. Martin, has wrapped, according to Visual Effects producer Julia Frey. The three weeks of shooting took place in three different countries and involved a cast of two dozen and more than 100 extras.
Cast members include Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, a woman of royal blood, Peter Dinklage as Cersei's brother Tyrion, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Cersei's twin, Jaime, Sean Bean as aristocrat Ned Stark, Jennifer Ehle as his wife, Catelyn Stark, and Mark Addy as King Robert.
HBO is reportedly expected to give its decision on a green light around March.

What a great cast! I can't wait to see this. Come on, HBO!

This is probably my most anticipated TV show ever. Only a Malazan Book of the Fallen TV show could top it.
I don't like Lena Headey for Cersei. I don't think she's good looking enough to use her looks to manipulate anyone she wants. I love everyone else though. I especially can't wait to see Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage.
I really hope HBO picks it up. I've read the pilot script and it's very faithful to the book, while the few changes that have been made are all good.

YES!!!! I've been waiting sooo long for HBO to do justice to the fantasy genre and to actually make an adult book come to life instead of the atrocities that other fantasy books have endured ::cough:: (Legend of the Seeker). Go GAME OF THRONES!!!!

Thanks for linking our story on this! There's a _lot_ of people are buzzing about this show, from plain old fans to TV critics and commentators. It could be a landmark production for fantasy on television.

I didn't realize that Jennifer Ehle was going to be a part of the production. Now I'm excited.

Please, HBO, make this happen!

While I'm excited to see this, with all the love of vampires going on right now, I'd REALLY love to see an adaption of Martin's "Fevre Dream." I think it's his best work.

If you're on twitter as we are, try tweeting @HBO to let them know you're excited. Who knows, they may report to higher ups about the buzz. Or re-tweet this article. :)
marillion,
It's a wonderful novel. I think it'd make a great vampire film, and vampires are really in right now. His novella "Skin Trade" has been optioned and is being developed by a small indie development company.
I'd love it if GoT goes forward, is a big hit, and HBO or some major filmmakers start looking at the rest of his work. Fevre Dream would be terrific to see on the screen, as would Dying of the Light and the Armageddon Rag.

This something I have been looking forward to since first reading A Game of Thrones; and, in truth, I never imagined it was going to happen. Thank God that there are people working at HBO and the BBC who are brillaint enough to take a chance on 'Good' IPs instead of the trash we keep getting on network TV.
I have been following the production play by play on the westeros forums, as well as the blog of the Maker himself, George RR (The Man) Martin, so I learned about the entire cast as they were speculated on in the West' forums and later confirmed by GRRM. And though I share the concern of some about Lena as Cercei (she's an amazing actress, but just does not seem like a good match for our lusty Lannister lady. Frankly, she would have been a better match as Catelyn Stark) the rest of the cast has pretty much blown my mind.
I really hope everyone follows the advice left by Westeros and twitter HBO, email 'em, etc, and let them know just how excited you are about the pilot.

RE: Casting concerns
Remember, this is a pilot. It's not unusual to do some re-casting after a pilot.

This series is great! HBO is the only network that could do this series justice, this will be great!

While a TV show is exciting...no such thing as bad press and all, and I do love me some Dinklage - I'd rather have Mr. Martin concentrating on getting us the next book! Some of us cannot afford HBO, but do have a library card. And the book is ALWAYS better.

I have a feeling the next book will be out around the same time that the pilot airs. Why wouldn't Martin capitalize to the max on the series and his book. Trust me, it's coming!

That is nice.
But if I had my wish they would make Wild Cards!!!!

I started reading Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" shortly after the second book came out (I first learned of it on a "Wheel of Time" message board), and promptly fell in love with the series.
I've been having geek-gasm after geek-gasm for months now as I read new information on HBO's pilot. I can't begin to describe how excited I am for it.
I do agree with those that have issues with Lena Heady's casting (I always felt that Tricia Helfer WAS Cersei Lannister), but other than that, I don't have any problems with the cast. I am a little suspicious of McCarthy as the director, since this is a fairly large cast compared to that which he directed in "The Station Agent" (the movie that introduced me to Dinklage, who I think is PERFECT as Tyrion).
When it comes to book-to-film adaptations, I really do hope this tops the charts. IMO, Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" was in many ways better than the books, which I still love at the age of 36, having read them at least 30 times in the past 28 years, and that it was the perfect adaptation, despite all the changes that PJ really had to make.
As for that "Legend of the Seeker" show, of course it sucked, look at the rotten source it is from. FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS READ TERRY GOODKIND!! (I made the horrible mistake of wasting 4 days of reading time to read the first book in that series, and I regret every second of it!).
I cannot imagine a "Malazan" adaptation; after reading only the first book, and half of the second, I just don't see it.
I wouldn't mind seeing a cable network like HBO or others doing a series adaptation of "Wheel of Time" in the same style they are doing aSoIaF (one season per book) but that is still just wishful thinking.
If anything else of Martin's is to filmed, I would love to see "The Armageddon Rag" done. That is in my opinion Martin's BEST writing yet.
Oh yeah, I just thought I would mention that almost everything I read I get from the library.
