The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in a whopping $140.7 million at the box office in its Nov. 20 weekend debut, the highest-grossing movie opening of the year so far and the third-best opening weekend ever, just behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported.
That's a lot of Twi-hards.
The Thursday midnight shows actually outdrew Dark Knight, indicating that New Moon was on its way to becoming a big hit.
New Moon shattered the records for opening day ($72.7 million) and midnight showings ($26.3 million).
So who are these people?
Distributor Summit Entertainment's exit polling indicated that 80 percent of the audience were female and 50 percent were under 21 years old, which means the sequel skewed more female and younger than the first Twilight.
This means that 20 percent were males, and that half of them were over 21. Who are you guys?
Oh, there were other movies in theaters this weekend as well. 2012 dropped 59 percent to an estimated $26.5 million, lifting its total to $108.2 million in 10 days. Roland Emmerich's previous movie, The Day After Tomorrow, had grossed $128.5 million by the same point.
Disney's A Christmas Carol, meanwhile, also took a sizable hit in its third weekend, with an estimated $12.2 million for a total of $79.8 million in 17 days.
Did you see New Moon? Did you like it? And are you a guy older than 21?
By emily margrit at 10:50 PM ON 11/22/09
Not sure if you're doing this on purpose, but your numbers are weird. It was 80/20 female/male, and 50/50 above 21/below 21. That says nothing about how many of those 21+ people were male or female. I would guess a significant majority of them are Twilight moms.
I didn't see the movie (21+ female) this weekend. But. I probably will. Eventually. Maybe not in theaters, unless dragged my enthusiastic friends. But I am not immune to eye candy, unfortunately, as horribly scripted as it might be! :)
By ZhaneEndrick at 10:54 PM ON 11/22/09
Yes I am a male over 21. I went to see it with my wife. No, I didn't hate it. I thought it was a little long, and there was more than one instance where I rolled my eyes, but it was quite a bit better than I expected it to be.
By Mr Borg at 11:00 PM ON 11/22/09
The Twilight : New Moon is awesome! Everybody should watch it!
By mykl at 11:09 PM ON 11/22/09
I guess there is no accounting for taste anymore. Anyone looking for a really good vampire/teenage love like story needs to just go and watch “Lost Boys” or even “Near Dark” and leave all this poor excuse for a vampire story behind. I read a report where almost if not more than half the people that went to see this crap were over 21… needless to say I am really ashamed of my young adult peers right now.
By Overquoted at 12:10 AM ON 11/23/09
I hate to break it to you dude, but if you still address yourself as a 'young adult,' you proibably aren't 21+.
Speaking as a 23 y/o female, I refused to see this in theaters on the basis that whatever 'coolness' I have left will instantly evaporate in the midst of so many tweens. That said, a friend of mine (28) and a friend of hers (20-something) both went to see it.
Eventually, my incredible weakness for Native American dudes will get me (it's called childhood imprinting people). But hopefully by then, it'll be on dvd.
...I really was tempted. *curls into a ball in a dark corner and cries* So much manboy-flesh!
By cfolliot at 12:51 AM ON 11/23/09
I'm going to out myself as being not cool by posting this : ), but I am in my early 30's and male, but as dumb and teen angsty as the series is, I was entertained by the books, which I started to read when my tween daughter got into them. The first movie just sucked, but this one looks much better. However, as a fan of "The Lost Boys," Anne Rice's vampires, and pretty much all the good vampire lore, I'm with everyone who wants vampires to be scary. Sexy is fine, but really, centuries old vampires with teen girls must be against some law (tongue firmly in cheek).

Like AWE MAH GAWD!!! OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG! I just totally SQUEALED when me and Brandy were like the first in line for the midnight showing Thursday night! Dude, like SOOOO many Twilighters were at the mall! I saw James and his new black nail polish and liike he was so totally GOTH! But NOT as goth as me and Brandy in our Team Cullen black t-shirt we got at Hot Topic. We like totally took a scissor to it and cut it up and we were soooooo more goth than James. Then we saw the movie and OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! It was the best most awesomest movie since like forever!!!!! If this movie doesn't win the MTV People's Choice Award, the People's Choice Award and Best Movie in the Oscars then there's like something wrong with this world. This movie was AAAAAAaaaaaawesuuuuum! Like, Eddie, Oh Eddie. I can see why some loser chicks like Jacob but like--eh, please, like Bobby Patterson. Helllooooo, Eye candy! He should win like Best Actor or something! Like this movie was better than that black and white movie Mrs. Jenkins showed at social studies, citizen kang or kane or something?!?! But OMG OMG OMG!!! Are you like, uh, a Valley Girl? OMG
By Bluesman at 1:34 AM ON 11/23/09
Ok, let me get this straight. A man, (vampire), at least a couple of centuries old, hangs out at a high school and seduces young girls. Am I the only one who sees the creepy factor here? If I did that I'd be in jail as a child molester so fast it would make my head spin.
By thunderstud at 1:55 AM ON 11/23/09
I am a big sci-fi/fantasy geek and I'm too cool for Twilight. Only a loser would see it. It's so stupid and I'm so hip to dump on it. Twilight is for girls! I only saw New Moon twice this weekend--but that's only so I could complain about how gay it is. I might go one more time--just so I can decry it better, though.
By Saje at 2:06 AM ON 11/23/09
I rarely see movies at the theaters--I prefer the comfort of my own home. That said, New Moon was probably the weakest of the books (yes, I'm a 43 y.o. urban fantasy author who read and enjoyed the books myself) and I have rather limited expectations of the movie. I'll admit to a twinge of envy that my books aren't nearly as popular, but I can't bitch about the fact that they've enticed people to read who otherwise never had before.
Like J.K. Rowling, Meyer deserves credit for that, if nothing else.
By A Non PC thug at 4:02 AM ON 11/23/09
Thunderstud you show the double standard I hate about crap like this movie. A normal guy waits out in line for a a sci movie and then hes labeled a "nerd", that he lives in his parents basement and so forth. Yet I see these girls out in line having emotional breakdowns for a freaking movie but that is ok? Wtf?
By Red Mask at 4:26 AM ON 11/23/09
Don't you mean 'Holy Crap, Batman'? Nolan better find his Boy Wonder if WB wants to draw more chicks.
By DeltaQuadrant at 4:50 AM ON 11/23/09
Those are not vampires!!!!
It's pure diabetic romance in which the poor Cain's sons are depicted in an horrible way.
Anne Rice Forever!!!!!!!
By Pimenta at 6:22 AM ON 11/23/09
There are a lot of retarded people out there. At least they accept it's a guilty pleasure, but making New Moon one of the most successfull movies ever is a crime against cinema.
By Jack at 6:23 AM ON 11/23/09
Are you serious?
I blame Ann Rice for this continual drek of vampires. My girlfriend and I tried reading Twilight. She tried twice before. We both got so angered by the terrible writing we just kept throwing it against the wall. Belle is the ultimate Mary Sue, and the messages about love and romance are just beyond creepy. There's been better criticism of the whole thing on many different quarters. But its pap, and its dangerous pap. It tells women that if he's hot.. even if he's an abuser, stick it out with him... it will be worth it. That's a scary message to give a teenage girl, and shame for the mother's who share it.
Also... not for any spoilers or anything, but an older man watching a baby grow up just so he can have sex with it when it gets old enough- do I have to really say that's beyond the pale? Really? Really?
By Richard at 6:57 AM ON 11/23/09
Two words: Chick Flick.
The vampire thing is just the hook they hang it on.
By FreakGirl at 7:18 AM ON 11/23/09
Personally, I saw Twilight first, everyone was talking about the books and a British friend bought them all to me as a present, the first one I didnt like it, however the first movie was an OK to me. A love story, as Richard said, a chick flick, from time to time I can digest them or see them alone at home better lol.
The second book I tried it and liked it a BIT more, same for the third. Since February I am trying to finish the last book and have read a lot more meanwhile because I just can't stand it, and yet want to see how everything ends
As for vampire story, well, we know they are called vampires, you see more in the first one and not enough, its a fresh story (not Oscar winner of course, still laughing at "OMG Girl").
Having read the books liked the second movie better (note that I like 99% of the time books better, here is 1% showing) and can say I want to see the 3rd one.
I am 36, female, went with a male 39 and we both liked it as a light love story
By Old Man at 7:55 AM ON 11/23/09
I'm a white male, mid 40's and I saw and liked the movie. My teenage daughter and I share a passion for reading. We have two stacks of books at home - hers and mine. When I finish a book, I put it into her stack. When she finishes a book, she puts it into mine.
We enjoy going to movies - especially ones made form books we've read. We often discuss, afterwards, what made it into the movie, what didn't, why this thing might have worked, and why something else might not have.
It's a shame people have to try to make themselves "cool" by hating something popular - in my mind, they are as guilty as the people they proclaim to hate, by jumping on the "lets hate this group today" bandwagon.
People who expect to see a medium like a book translated exactly into a movie will always be dissapointed - they are two seperate mediums. One is incredibly personal, the other incredibly visual.
I enjoyed the books - although I think she hurried on the last one, much like Rolling did with the last Potter book. I've also enjoyed the movies, and the way the actors and director are interpreting the characters.
But, then again, I'm an old man, and I realize that what I am looking for is entertainment. If I want a life altering event, I'll hang out in church, or join the army, or the peace corp, or maybe move to Canada. . .
By cassi at 7:56 AM ON 11/23/09
How many more movies are they gonna make about this stupid vampire series?
I hope it's over soon because twilight fans are super annoying.
By FreakGirl at 8:08 AM ON 11/23/09

same here. i'm 37 - attended with my wife. i actually enjoyed it more than the first. for me, the best parts of the movie centered on jacob and the rest of the werewolves. they are so much more interesting than edward and his clan.

I wish they would make Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series into movies. That would be a vampire movie set that I think would be entertaining. It not only has vampires of pretty much every type but also is chock full of historical/literary homages for those that like that sort of thing.
But no, we get Twilight and Vampire's Assistant. Sigh. Not going to get into whether they are good or bad, but there is little doubt that they are basically cotton candy when we could be getting a full meal with truffle cheesecake for dessert.

If a film as deep and all that you describe was made , NO ONE WOULD ATTEND the movie because it is very likely the audience for that kind of movie is to small to make any money from it. Young folks looking for "AN EVENT " just to have something to do is what drives movies today. The one exception was the Christian movie a few years ago that was heavily attended by that one large sector of the population and then it was only moderately successful compared by movies like New Moon or Dark Knight.
It is unfortionate this site has such a poor catcha system, it is as if they really do not want folks to comment so they have made it difficult just to discourage it.
By w0lfm4n at 10:08 AM ON 11/23/09
I refuse to see Twilight or anything of it because as an adult male, I'm not as interested in the bubblegum pop fluff that horror, Sci Fi, and Fantasy have turned into. Its unintelligent dreck.
The idea that any century old character would have an infatuation with a teenage girl is gross enough, let alone hanging out at high school. I spent four years tryin to get out. No way I'm goin back no matter what supernatural creepy bites me.
Lost boys had it right. I'd party it up and find myself victims at night. No more daywalking.
I'm lookin forward to Daybreakers and as far as any New Moon goes... how bout the Wolfman. Saw the new trailer this week, it is going to be one hell of a ride.
By Artifex at 10:30 AM ON 11/23/09
This movie was horrible. The groaner dialog made sitting through it painful. If 30 min. of this had been left on the editing room floor, it might have been decent. And yes, it was 80/20 female/male, with old ladies squealing whenever the Jacob took off his shirt (that happened a lot).
Note to authors: never have any character say, "I can't live without you." First, it's a lie. Second, it doesn't stop being a lie if you have them say it more than once in the same book/story. Third, it becomes no less a lie if a vampire, who's probably fell in and out of love multiple times over his one-century-plus of life, says it.
By Gsizz at 10:31 AM ON 11/23/09
Anybody who'd like to say that Lost Boys and Near Dark were masterpieces and then comparing it to Twilight as saying that Twilight is cheesy and sucks...
...maybe you should rewatch those "classics" again with a more cynical eye. Those movies were cheesy as hell!! C'mon! You're being blind here. Remember the shirtless oiled up sax player on the beach in Lost Boys? The Frog brothers? The head vampire when he "vamped" out? The horrible flying effects and sounds?
Let's be real here...just because it's something you grew up with and like, doesn't mean it's better than something new you don't like.
By TheGigaShadow at 10:49 AM ON 11/23/09
Everyone who wanted to see it saw it opening weekend. Look for a MASSIVE drop in box office on week two. It will continue to fall with each passing week after that. Guaranteed.
By AngryJonny at 10:53 AM ON 11/23/09
TwilightBites, hilarious! You sound just like the ninth-graders I teach. Drives me FREAKIN' CRAZY.
Gsizz, maybe YOU should rewatch Near Dark because it still stands up as a terrific movie. And, c'mon, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton's performances are fantastic! (I do agree that Lost Boys has a dated '80s sheen, but it's also still a great movie.)
A lot of people complain about how fay vampires are now (although I agree with Jack above who believes it began with Anne Rice), but did anyone see 30 Days of Night? It was a bit of a "B" movie, but those vampires were sadistic, vile, inbred -- like some of my students!

He goes to high school because he pretty much has to if he wants any kind of even a semi normal life. He is perpetualy 17. And in most cities if your 17 and not in school someone sooner or later is going to notice and start asking questions.
Personally I am unboundingly happy that this movie is so freaking successful if for no other reason that to give all the twilight haters brain hemorages. C'mon people! Let's see some more of those mouth frothing invectives! I only counted nine or ten vicious hate filled comments I KNOW you can do better than that!
Personally I hope it earns three or four hundred million. maybe then all the bitching, moaning and hate spewing whiners will have heart attacks and free us all from their diatribe.

Well gee, Nostradamus, thanks for that insightful prediction. Of course it's going to fall with each passing week - as people watch it, less and less pay to go and see it.
Oh and hey, guess what? I predict next month it will snow in Canada.

By Blastphemy at 11:43 AM ON 11/23/09
"Holy crap"? Is that the level of SciFi Wire's journalistic linguistic skills? It doesn't even have anything to do with the movie; it's literally just some moronic SciFi editor not having brains enough to write anything clever or compelling in the headlines. "Holy crap"? What about something like 'New Moon Eclipses opening weekend records" or something semi-intelligent and applicable like that? It doesn't take a genius to write good headlines, but your staff must be made up of morons to not even be able to do anything but swear in your copy.

Look everyone knew this was going to happen, dont be suprised. Seriously this should have the same impact as Transformers 2. Meaning lots of money, crappy reception.
Anyways, if you dont like it, just watch the bootleg, nd tear it apart mystery science theatre style. I mean, the best way to deal with this franschise is to let your voice be heard with crude humor. So yea, if you love good for you, expect mkore movies and other movies ripping it off. If you hate, come up with the best jokes as humanly possible.
I'll start it, do you really think that Rob Patterson can pull off looking like a highschool student by the time the they get to the fourth movie? I mean the guy already looks 29 and hes aging real fast. Its going to be tough to play the highschool sweet heart by then.
By CmonPlease at 12:48 PM ON 11/23/09

I would have laughed harder if the title of this article was "Unholy Crap!"
As for this "third highest opening of all time" business, let us once again remind ourselves that is not taking into account inflation and is also relative to the number of screens it opened on. After all, we wouldn't want to give this third-rate Buffy/Angel knock-off any more credit that it deserves, would we?
By Jack at 4:28 PM ON 11/23/09
I'm sorry.. I have to go with Lost Boys. It knew how to mix comedy with horror. It was cheesey ON PURPOSE. It subtly played you as a watcher. I just watched Lost Boys with my GF who had never seen it before. She's in her twenties. I'm not, and she agrees its probably the best Vamp movie she's ever seen.
I'm an English Teacher. I don't hate things because they are cool. I hate them because they are badly written, and they soak up followers when they should be thrown out in the dustbin of history. and NO I'm not an elitist in my reading either. There's lots of better drek to read out there than Twilight- a book written by a woman who never read a horror in her life, and had no idea about the actual conventions of Vampires.
Twilight is an insult to good vampire stories.

I'm a 30 year old male with an unhealthy obsession with cr@ppy movies and equally as cr@ppy books about emo teenage model vampires and weak ineffectual leading female characters because deep down inside I'm a weak ineffectual little girl being bossed around by my wiccan girlfriend and at 30 I still wear black all the time especially during hot summer months and check out eyeliners in my mom's basement. Twilight rules!

1st you don't know whether or not she's read any horror and perhaps she decided to ignore the usual Vampire conventions and try something different. Besides twilight is more a love strory than a vampire story. It just happens to have vampires in it.
Whether something is poorly writen is purely a matter of opinion. Sounds pretty elitist to me.

@AngryJohnny ...actually, I have seen Near Dark recently. I went on a horror-B movie binge, which included Near Dark, and I like that movie. Not entirely sold on some of the direction, but it's a good movie. It's entertaining...however, still cheesy. I think a lot of times when we love a movie so much, we don't see a lot of those kinds of things. Ultimately, that also applies to Twilight fans. They miss the crap, because they're so enthralled by what they are watching.
I do a lot of reading. My favorite author is Neil Gaiman. Comparatively, Gaiman to Meyer is like comparing steak to hamburger. Lots of people love hamburger for what it is and enjoy one from time to time, but steak is much better.
The fact that people get so angry about this is the real drek here. It's silly...waste your hate on something else other than a movie and a set of books.
