The popular graphic novel Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday just launched on Hulu as a motion comic created by legendary comics artist Neal Adams. And what the heck's a motion comic? It's a video based on the artwork from the comic books, using all the original words and drawings, and Marvel is hoping the new form will change the way we read comics.
"At this point in the history of motion comics, Gifted is the very best motion comic book out there," Adams said in an interview on the Hulu blog. "There will be some in the future that will be as good if not better, but right now it's the best one."
Adams also had this to say about about Whedon:
"I guess there may be a better script writer out there, but is there someone more used to the form of both comic books and film? I don't think there is."
Check it out for yourself below.

Joss Whedon should probably due the Xmen movie or TV series.
I think the pacing, action and story telling in Angel and Buffy would be a good fit with Xmen.
Unlike Bryan Singer which was decent story but lacked action / special effects. Then you have Bret Ratner who was too much action bad story.

I think I'll wait to read the omnibus on paper.

I've enjoyed motion comics in the past. I think it's a fun medium, but I don't think it can change the way we read comics, just like television or computer games haven't changed the way we read comics.
It's a very separate medium that has its own set of benefits and detriments.

Joss Wedon sux. Dollhouse sux. Fox sux. Bring back TSCC!
(just kidding, but I thought I'd jump start the Terminatrixes out there)
You rock Joss!!!

I never read the original comic but I did enjoy the way they presented it here. However, did anyone else find the odd "image warping" techniques they use to impart motion just a little bit disturbing?

It's not actually Joss' latest project as he had no involvement in the making iof the motion comic.

That was quite well executed, I find myself fairly surprised. Truth be told, when I first heard about this via Wizard I had expected it to be fairly terrible, as most if not all motion comics have been. The Watchmen Motion comic comes to mind as they decided to have a single voice actor do every character which just made some sections down right...well, creepy.
However, leave it to Marvel to garner success where DC has failed. For the record, I loved Joss run on Astonishing X-Men and I have collected most if not all if it through the graphic novel formats. It was a real treat to see all of the orginal content preserved, nothing truncated, especially dialogue as that is where Joss shines brightest. Sadly, even though Hulu was kind enough to provide an easy preview of the first issue of Astonish' a preview is all it is. Future enstalments, as I understand, will be available for purchase via Itunes and through the Marvel website. The prices have varied from different motion projects, but it's never too bad. Now, Wizard has never specified as to if Joss would be involved in this, but he did make a mention of it on his fan blog site Whedonesque, so as to if he will have or has had any involvement is in question. I hope Marvel does run some things by him as his input could only improve an already well done project.

These things can be hit or miss.
I've been DVR'ing the Voltron and Street Fighter Motion Comics on Mondays nights on Sci-Fi (PLUG.). I enjoy the Voltron episodes quite a bit, but the Street Fighter ones only serve to remind me how bad the comics and anime were.

This was decent (I read and loved the original comic run) but it won't replace comics. Much how film and tv hasn’t replaced books the same applies here. Each media has its own strengths and weaknesses. I for one would enjoyed reading the comics a lot more as my mind filled in the gaps when it comes to all the action sequences making them a lot more elaborate in the minds-eye where as this made things seems fairly tame and boring.

Motion comics are a great idea for online distribution, but I wish they'd pick a comic that was not already published. If you liked this brief clip the full story is already available at your local comic store. I liked the story, Whedon could probably write a mean X movie, he seems to have a good grasp of the characters and history.

What a piece of crap. It's been made clear in Grant Morrison's run that Emma Frost has an english accent.
Of course, Quesada, Buckley and most everyone in charge at Marvel never really cared about the details do they?
Every single animated project from Marvel has been a complete disaster. Of course, if no one complains then they'll never change their ways.

@bladerunner
Not sure how Emma and Scott got together but the result of Beast's look is his continued mutation. In the last several years a lot of the mutants have started undergoing secondary mutations. Beast is becoming more animal like both in looks and temper; Emma can turn her entire body into a diamond like state becoming nearly indistructable; and Angel/Archangel's blood acts like a healing factor when transfused into others.
Some of the resecent changes have been nice but most were just a weak way to try and generate new interest. Whedon did make a great use of Beast's beastly side later in the series though. Pickup the trades for the Astonishing X-Men. I'm sure you'll love them!

thanks lordmoon. i just might do that it has been a long while since i have wandered through the doors to a comic shop. i must say it has gotten me curious about recent past adventures and of the characters i had been fond of.

Marvel kinda did motion comics back in the 60's with the Merry Marchin Marvel hour.

This is also very much like something they tried back in '03. Not so much with the CG manipulation of the images, but on some DVDs released by Marvel and I think Dark Horse, they did try the traveling cut-out bits of art to try and add dynamism to the static images. Unfortunately, at least with the "dramatization" they did with "The Ultimates," the soundtrack wasn't anywhere NEAR as well handled. Often the voice "actors" sounded like they were reading somebody else's doctoral thesis, and a dry one at that.
This soundtrack is much more like the old '70s Power Records book and album combos, where they had the original comic pages and an audio dramatization on a 45 (that's a teeny little vinyl record for you young'uns!) that included prompting beeps when it was time to turn the page. Between the excellent voice acting and the sound effects, you practically didn't need to follow along with the comic book. Still have a few of those memorized! Fun fact: Peter Fernandez, the voice of Speed Racer, also voiced Peter Parker/Spider-man and Johnny Storm/The Human Torch for those recordings.
