Critics whine, but New Moon outdraws Dark Knight

Critics whine, but \<i\>New Moon\<\/i\> outdraws \<i\>Dark Knight\<\/i\>

Take that, critics, part two: The Twilight Saga: New Moon set a new midnight opening record with $26.27 million from 3,514 theaters last night, surpassing the opening nights of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($22.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($18.4 million), Summit Entertainment reported.

The Dark Knight!

This, despite lukewarm-to-downright-awful reviews: The sequel ranked a measly 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer," and here is a sampling of the critical reaction:

"If the first instalment of The Twilight Saga was a celebration of teenage sulkiness, then this sequel positively drowns in it." —Digital Spy

"Memo to director Chris Weitz and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg: Just because you make a movie about vampires doesn't mean you suck the life out of your story." —Christian Science Monitor

"Considering it's about vampires, it's ironic the whole affair is mostly bloodless and decidedly toothless." —Channel 4 Film

Or our personal favorite:

"The characters in this movie should be arrested for loitering with intent to moan." —Roger Ebert

Our own reviewer was a bit more generous, saying it's better than the first installment.

But The Dark Knight??

Summit is, of course, holding out hope that the movie, based on the second of Stephenie Meyers' best-selling books, will outdraw the Batman sequel over all. That remains to be seen.

What did you think of New Moon?

Just proof that bad taste is universal and we knew that from looking at pop music.
The Dark Knight was actually good, but mediocre dribble will always win.

I can't believe so many people thank this Twilight crap is any good. I take this news as a sign of the coming apocalypse.

So what? That doesn't make New Moon a better movie, it just means more people have poor taste.

" New Moon outdraws Dark Knight "

.....I make no excuses or apologies for this sad commentary upon the collective intelligence of the movie-going public....

I am, after all, an MST3K fan.

I will say this.......

I`ll not place too much importance upon the repetitive viewings of enraptured teens...
.....any more than I would the multiple screenings of finally-pleased fanboys.

Ha! ...There.....
Pigeon-hole that opinion, ya Fargin` Bastages !

By Curmudgeon at 4:14 PM ON 11/20/09

Well you know why it did so good last night? Cause after "2012" people were desperate to watch ANYTHING else.

By Gsizz at 4:25 PM ON 11/20/09

You guys complain too much. There are no shortage of amped up, aggressive, blood and action fests every summer, fall, winter and spring...so what if one franchise comes out with horror/fantasy-elements that appeals mostly to the fairer sex?

Grow up. It deserves its place in the world to entertain just as much as anything you all love.

Besides, if you let this go, you'll at least be happier angry internet users.

By Cris at 4:52 PM ON 11/20/09

This is especially impressive considering 95 percent of the audience had to wake up early the next morning to get to junior high school.

By jpl1976 at 4:55 PM ON 11/20/09

The sad thing here is that the many that swoon over drivel like this will only believe that this is the only type of vampire. A vampyr to me is NOSFERATU not some daylight walking twinkling in the daylight "heart throb". Besides vampyr's and werewolves DO NOT come out during the day....they are nocturnal and this whole series flies in the face of what is the actual mythos. So kudos for helping to destroy a mythos and creating tween porn.

It seems the diabolical plan to convince everyone that vampires are benign, sparkly, pretty boys is succeeding. Soon the likes of Van Helsing will lower their guard for bigger game! And then, my children, we shall strike! Mwahahaha!

By Mandy at 5:43 PM ON 11/20/09

The Dark Knight was a well written and cleverly conceived noir superhero drama with depth never seen before in a superhero movie. Twilight though... is shallow tripe.

By Magysty at 5:56 PM ON 11/20/09

Hey. Frat boys. Computer geek boys--if you want an actual real human girl to do girl-boy things with--you might want to pay attention.

Okay, probably not to this. Edward is still creepy stalker guy. Still--I can't believe I'm hearing "too many teen girls" coming out of this crowd...

By Iis4island at 6:00 PM ON 11/20/09

Yes, it is depressing, but we all knew it was going to happen.

To make it less painful, I suggest enjoying Lautner's use of sports cliches in his interviews: It was a team effort; he worked hard to support the fans; he took wearing the wig one day at a time. It's frakkin' hilarious. Should make you all feel much more manly than you do right now.

Just be consoled that none of the Twilight movies will ever come anywhere near Dark Knight's total gross.

And hey, SciFi Wire, I had to reload the page EIGHT TIMES to get the Captcha to work.

By ChayneLightning at 6:31 PM ON 11/20/09

Lis -

I really hope you are right about Twilight's expected grosses, but remember the highest grossing film is Titantic, which was fueled by teen aged girls as well. So never say never.

funny story about the Titanic movie, when I was at the Paramus RKO to see a different movie at time, i overheard two crying teen aged girls on their way out of Titanic. One sobbingly turned to the other and ask (SPOILER ALERT HA)

Why did the ship have to sink at the end?

I, being who I am,. screamed

WHAT! THE SHIP SINKS! THANKS FOR RUINING THE MOVIE FOR ME!

By Iis4island at 7:28 PM ON 11/20/09

Oh, please, no... I'm going to stick to with "Twilight won't make as much"!

I think any of us with young girls should do our best to use Twilight as a Teaching Moment and talk to our daughters about stalker boyfriends. I'm lucky in that my kid hated the books.

I've got a story as sad as Chayne's about a movie... My husband I went to see Mel Gibson's "Hamlet" in the theater when it was released. Sitting behind us were four young men wondering out loud why what they were watching wasn't more like "Lethal Weapon". They got up and left.

Sorry about the multi-posts. Captcha was freaking out on me.

By smegforbrain at 7:32 PM ON 11/20/09

"so what if one franchise comes out with horror/fantasy-elements that appeals mostly to the fairer sex?"

Bad movies (particularly those based on bad books) are still bad movies.

By SciFiFan at 7:34 PM ON 11/20/09

Dark Knight would have made more too if they had aimed it towards mentally challenged tweens like this movie has and make it all emo like.

So sick of every freaking movie having a love story in it. Love storys are just so "cheap" feeling, its crap you can just keep on TV.

By Pagrin at 7:35 PM ON 11/20/09

Hey it's a flick about screwed up teenages, it therefore appeals to screwed up teenages, no big mystery there.
Stranger however is this weird fascination with being who are not screwed up teenages, feeling the need to claim and or discredit a movie which is not aimed at them just because it has an element which they have claimed to be their own.

Personally I think the movie looks crap, but I'm not the target audience. I also thought a lot of the other stuff coming from Hollywood is crap (star trek, Recent day the Earth stood still, oh hey more or less any remake for that matter) And I am the target audience for them.
However I didn't pay for them to be made, and I voted with my feet by not seeing them in the cinema.
If you don't like Twilight and it's add-ons don't go see them. it's that easy.

By mykl at 7:40 PM ON 11/20/09

Could care less about the movie but I am sure Batman will swing it back around when the third installment comes out… Nolan you reading this? You want to be out performed box office-wise by this sh*t?

By REDante at 7:47 PM ON 11/20/09

Everyone knew that it was going to make a lot of money. A lot of people knew that chances are critics would hate it. So for those who hate it, watch the bootleg, and do your little mystery science theatre act, its just more fun to rip it apart with jokes then to rip it apart with bitterness.
Heres one all of you should take notice. Rob Pattersonj is aging, very quickly, the guy ain't no Daniel Radcliff to keep up with the look. By the 3rd film I think they may try not to mention hes a teenager.
And as for all those girls, sooner or later after they fall in love with an abusive relationship, lets hope those abusive boyfriends of theirs will keep them from watching any more of that crap.

By Mandy at 8:53 PM ON 11/20/09

Actually, as much as I loathe Twilight the original Dracula could go about in the day time, he just hunted by night. The sun would not kill him. The sun wouldn't kill the vampires in Whitley Streiber's the Hunger either but they didn't sparkle and they were still killers.

A pet peeve of mind is when Twilight fans try to say that sparkling is more realistic than burning in the sun. Nevermind that there are real disorders and diseases that cause peoples' skin to blister in the sun and or die from direct contact from sunight. Even simply being on Sulfer-based medications for illnesses like Crohn's Disease will make you vulnerable to sunlight. So yes, burning in the sun is more plausible than sparkling.

And a lot of early werewolf lore, particularly out of France and Germany had werewolves able to change form whenever they chose and into literal wolves.

This isn't a shapeshifter, boys and girls. It's STILL a werewolf. A shapeshifter can take multiple forms, not just that of a wolf. It's annoying to me that Twilight fans THINK turning into a wolf at will is not the same as being a werewolf. Many werewolf lore has nothing to do with the phase of the moon. Some are punished by Gods or priests, some change by nightfall, some by the phase of the moon, and some from potions, wolf skin coats or belts. There are many legends from many places. But it's STILL a werewolf.

The earliest werewolf legend is of the Greek myth of Lycaon. He served a feast of human flesh for Zeus. When Zeus realized what he had done he punished him by turning him into a wolf. Only his eyes remained human. This is where the terms Lycanthrope, Lycanthropy and the more modern Lycan came from.

Here's something I wrote fairly recently about Twilight and the relationships therein.

Don't settle for Twilight!

I understand what it's like to be a teenage girl who wants to read a romance story and a supernatural story at the same time. She wants a protagonist she can relate to and so if you find a novel that's both supernatural and romantic you've got yourself some Gothic brain candy. I've been that teenage girl looking for just that. Now at twenty-eight-years-old I realize there are better things out there and I am grateful my teenage years came before the Twilight fad.

The supernatural homosexual / bisexual fiction is pretty much cornered by the works of Anne Rice but many young readers don't know where to go for the heterosexual romantic fiction so the first thought is Twilight. No. Do not settle for Twilight. There are other options.

Let me tell you there ARE better works out there. They might seem old and unrelatable but really they're not.

Take, for example, the story of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir by R. A. Dick. It was a novel published in the early forties and adapted into a film and television series of the same name, all long before many Twilight fans' parents were even born but I assure you it's not outdated, nor is it a hard read.
In The Ghost and Mrs. Muir you have a twenty-nine-year-old protagonist who married young to a sickly husband who recently passed away. Where the modern Twilight saga has some surprisingly sexist themes The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (despite being written in the nineteen forties) is all about feminism and a woman taking control of her own life.
Lucy (called Lucia by the ghost) Muir begins her adventure, not by being a passive whiner, but by deciding to move to a new home as to get away from her late young husband's dominating family.
Despite her new home being haunted by a snarky, antagonistic, and slightly crude (for those days) ghost she decides to stay and not let herself be bullied by the ghost. The ghost comes to like the fact that she's aggressive and willing to stand up for herself (though there is a scene where she cries and he folds into chivalry to comfort her, revealing a softness under his brass exterior).
Lucy, though only ten years older than the character of Bella, serves as the anti-Bella. Where Bella would fail at simply being a woman, Mrs. Muir shines. When her late husband's family finds out she's penniless and try to force her to come back with them Mrs. Muir refuses. She and her ghostly friend decide to write a book about a rough and tumble captain (based on the ghost's actual life).
Think about it. A nineteen forties story about a single mother making her own way in the world with a quasi-boyfriend-ghost that SHE puts into his place repeatedly. How ironic that the 'modern' love story of Twilight has a young girl who can't functin without her romanatic interest with the subtext that every woman needs a man in her life.
Where Edward hovers and dominates Bella, Captain Gregg (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir) knows when to back off. In fact Captain Gregg was openly misogynistic at first because he did not like the overly feminine, damsel in distress, prudish types. (The ghost would hate Bella). However when you really get down to it, Edward's 'protectiveness' of Bella proved to be a lot more sexist and misogynistic, over-bearing and dominating than the so-called misogynist of the ghost in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Edward's relationship with Bella was an unapologetic and unhealthy example of an abusive relationship whereas Mrs. Muir's relationship with Captain Gregg was a bitter-sweet romance in which one decides to back off because he fears ruining her life but in the end it's revealed that love truly is ever lasting.

The ghost and Mrs. Muir movie and original novel can both be found on amazon.

The problem with Edward Cullen is Meyers forgets that there is a fine line between chivalry and sexism. Edward crosses that line. The character of Harry Dresden in Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files is often mistaken as sexist for his constant chivalry, holding doors, leaping into action to rescue damsels in distress, falling for it when a woman cries (even if she's a blood thirsty monster) but Harry Dresden is simply what I would call protection-bias. He feels a constant desire to keep women safe WITHOUT controlling them (Edward Cullen has Bella kidnapped at one point and her vehicle disabled just so he can 'protect' her). While at the same time, for all of Harry Dresden's protectiveness of women, he often gets the snot kicked out of him by a five-foot-tall Karin Murphy.

So if you believe in Girl Power or any feminist notion of equality to men and still want a supernatural romance that doesn't try to brainwash you into thinking Twilight promotes anything remotely like a healthy relationship remember there are other options.

By TruthBeTold at 8:53 PM ON 11/20/09

To all those "Let Twilight be", fine, as an entertainment medium whether it be books or movie it has a "right" to entertain. BUT when it's HYPED and you see Patterson and Stewart's face in every f%*ing magazine cover and every other post in your sci-fi blogs is Twilight this, and when you know--you KNOW--this is all hastily created to cynically cash in on the craze to EXPLOIT a teen fad and all based on books more cheesy than Hallmark cards, of course there are going to be people who cry "Chr1st, ENOUGH!!!!". Yes it's aimed at teens and written for teens. But when marketing mavens inject this cr@p at people who would otherwise turn away but can't because its all over the f#$&ing place people are going to call it out as cr@p. It's the inundation that's making us sick.

By xdeathknightx at 9:20 PM ON 11/20/09

Gotta love all the "suave" sci fi geeks on here thinking that if they find this to be a good movie that they will finally score. Newsflash: there are more than enough women who hate twilight and think bella is a tart and edward a tool.

Next to that my movies don't have to be explosion filled, gore galore movies, I can enjoy simple relaxed movies as well.
If you want to have your girl or daughters see an actual good recent vampire movie, rent Let The Right One In.

By azathoth at 10:50 PM ON 11/20/09

What amazes me is how long it takes the vampires to kill one teenage girl. Zombies tend to end all of civilization in the first half hour or so of the movie. These emo vampires need ot shape up and get with the program and stop being so whiny.

By hmmmmm at 2:47 AM ON 11/21/09

"If you want to have your girl or daughters see an actual good recent vampire movie, rent Let The Right One In."

Ok..... so show them the movie with a pre-tween who's building up to be a serial killer... let alone the pubic shot....

Don't get me wrong, it was an interesting film, but not what I'd use as a substitute for Twilight by any stretch of the imagination.

The Twilight Saga is a compilation of great books. What Hollywood does with that is another matter. The flavor of New Moon was changed by the directors choices. The passion was missing in the music, the emotions portrayed, and the shabby make-up. Whats with the RED eyes? It was subtle in Twilight. Vampires are suppose to be sexy and alluring not just scarey and ugly!

I don't know how egos are in Hollywood but why couldn't Chris Weitz have cooperated with Catherine Hardwicke?I missed the female energy in the direction. It was really obvious. And where was Stephanie Meyers in this one?

By Gsizz at 2:16 PM ON 11/22/09

Actually, I'm changing my mind...I hope this craze lasts even longer than normal, so you guys will writhe in agony and spew venom every time you see it slammed in front of you.

It's hilarious how some of you argue that these aren't what "real vampires" are. Are you freakin' kidding me? Every incarnation of vampire has been different...personally, I like the classics, but if this author saw hers in a dream and he was sparkly, then so be it. She has every right to write it and make money off of it. And if there's a massive following that spawns movies, then all the more power to them. You don't have to like it...but to sit there and say that this is drivel, and then turn around and proclaim your favorite movies to be complete genius is arrogant, naive, immature, and short sighted.

So what if teen girls scream and yell for it. For every one of their bad movies, we've got 6 or more a year, and trust me, our movies are just as silly to others from the outside looking in.

Perhaps what you should be more upset about, is the media's way of taking something like this and exploiting it in every direction for the sake of money. But then again, isn't money what it's all about?

Relax, The Dark Knight was a great movie to most of us. New Moon will be a great movie to those that go and love that. Transformers will be a great movie to the fans who went to see that (of which, I thought that was crap). This isn't the first time this has happened with a teen sensation, and it won't be the last.

By JimKullen at 2:17 PM ON 11/22/09

My sister and I saw this yesterday.. we are both adults and thought this was a well done movie. We got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I think this one is better than the first.

By ScoobySnacks at 6:22 PM ON 11/22/09

Hey Shadow - getting those Scooby Snacks ready???

By scifi fan at 8:04 PM ON 11/22/09

Folks wake up, there is a market out there for an event and for The Twilight fans to got involved in and apparently it is being tapped into. Let them enjoy themselves they will get older and grippe fast enough. Most everything is CRAP to someone and great to others so if a market exists to support it then let it be enjoyed by those that want it. I certainly was not out at midnight Thursday to see it, if I had been someone would have probably had me arrested for being a "DIRTY OLD MAN" or something like that but I did read the first book of this series just to get a first hand idea and found the characters likeable and that Bella's love of the old truck to be rather fun to read about. I hope the fans are happy and enjoy THIS EVENT, and have more to come if the series can support it. Actually Vampire Diaries is not a bad series either.

To all those attacking the movie, just do not go see it if it is not your kind of story but let the kids enjoy it.

By LorelC at 8:07 PM ON 11/22/09

The Dark Knight was adults moping, not much of a difference. I have no idea why people like the new Batmans so much--they're horribly filmed (hello? are there any cinematographers left in Hollywood?). And as big a deal as people as people made of Heath Ledger (out of sympathy) that was not an Oscar worthy performance. The only scene that was effective and not predictable (and yes, even the girl dying was predictable)was the prisoners on the ferry willing to sacrifice themselves. THOSE guys should have got the Oscar.

By ejdax37 at 12:03 AM ON 11/23/09

@Gsizz thank you for your post, i too laugh when someone goes on about "real Vampires".

I am also tired of people proclaiming these stories (book or movies) are crap off of a two line review they read somewhere. If all you know about the story is that the vampires are shiny that is like me saying all Batman is just about is a dude in a rubber bat-suit and there for stinks. You can make anything sound crappy it you boil it down to a one sentence blurb.

I dare any of you haters to go pick up a paperback of Twilight and read the first couple of chapters if after that you can put it down and still say you hate it ok, it's not for you but please don't write a novel on how bad the story is based only on someone else's opinion, make your own. (btw i love batman, also not a teenager.)

By theused14 at 6:46 PM ON 11/24/09

It is not "Whining" if it is TRUE. One dimensional characters, wooden acting, and a pointless story line do not make great films, it means it is crap.

New Moon sucks the goo out of a dead dog's @ss that was lying on an asphalt road for three days.
