Nothing is sacred: Fright Night is being remade!

Nothing is sacred: \<i\>Fright Night\<\/i\> is being remade!

Goodbye cigarette-smoking, martini-drinking admen—hello bloodsucking, garlic-hating vampires!

Marti Noxon, writer-producer on the critically acclaimed Mad Men, has been hired to script a remake of Fright Night for DreamWorks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But before you get all WTF, remember that Noxon was also writer-producer on both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, so it's actually a return to her roots.

The original Fright Night, released in 1985, starred Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale, with Ragsdale playing a teenager who discovers his neighbors are vampires.

We'd normally be worried about tampering with a horror classic, but since Noxon has entertained us with both teens and vampires before, consider us cautiously hopeful.

Message to Noxon, DreamWorks and Hollywood: Seriously I want to ask... Is it really that difficult to write an original story instead of constantly making rewrites and reimages of past movies? Most of SyFy's movies suck but I have to salute them for at least creating new movies...

By MCP-001 at 11:48 AM ON 11/12/09

Oh swell, yet another remake!

Can we "officially" claim that originality is dead in Hollywood yet?

By photoguyryan at 11:49 AM ON 11/12/09

Another G** D*** remake/reboot.

If they cant make something unique, and new, why bring a new script writer. Just go ahead and photocopy the original also.

I mean, unless they are casting big boobed bimbos to run around naked.

By kebgd at 11:57 AM ON 11/12/09

I am excited and can't waitto see what they do with it.

By BlessedBlogger at 11:58 AM ON 11/12/09

"Nothing is sacred: Fright Night is being a remade!"

I don't mean to nitpick but I think you have a gratuitous 'A' in there.

By Gsizz at 12:02 PM ON 11/12/09

Remakes have less to do with nobody writing original stuff, and more to do with Hollywood not wanting to take a chance and shelling out millions for something that has no prior fanbase. Think about it, if you can guarantee x amount of dollars because it has existing fans that will come and see it, it's more of a safe financial bet. Not saying I like this any more than you guys, but this is the way of the world.

By Iis4island at 12:12 PM ON 11/12/09

Well, I suppose it's no stupider than the movies based on boardgames. At least with a reboot there's a plot and characters to work with.

By Tony at 12:27 PM ON 11/12/09

Please, no teenage vampire emo angst love triangles with cheekboned actors and sullen ingenues to cash in on the Twilight crap that's so hyped and copied nowadays in this remake. Please.

By Vano75 at 12:42 PM ON 11/12/09

can't they remake a really shit film instead? and not murder a really good one? There was nothing wrong with the original!!!

By cogadh at 12:59 PM ON 11/12/09

Was "Fright Night" really sacred? I don't remember the movie as being all that good in the first place. I mean, its not like we are talking about a re-make of the "Citizen Kane" of horror movies here, this was the equivalent of an 80's teen "coming of age/sex comedy" with a vampire twist, nothing more. A re-make will probably be a good thing for it.

By Farrah Fawcett's Hawt Ghost at 1:01 PM ON 11/12/09

They will cast Seth Rogen as Peter Vincent, Frankie Muniz as Charlie Brewster and Jack Black as Billy Cole...

By urson at 1:06 PM ON 11/12/09

I tend to agree with Vano75- if they're doing a remake, upgrade a crap movie. I even have an example: "X-The Man With The X-Ray Eyes". It's a decent enough story, and could really benefit from today's FX capability. Just don't give it to an 'all-action, all the time' director.

By CRDFilm at 1:22 PM ON 11/12/09

John Waters has always said, "Why remake a good movie? Remake a bad one and make it better." "Fright Night" was a good movie and it was something different for the time. I can't really see the reason for remaking it other than money in Sony's bank account. But some of their other Screen Gems horror remakes haven't exactly improved on the originals ("When a Stranger Calls" for example). But know one wants to risk something original in this economy. Look at how Warners handled "Trick R Treat." It was something different, yet we've just been getting stale rehashes of 80s slasher films since that was first made back in 2007! Originality and risk are dead in Hollywood.

By Dave at 2:08 PM ON 11/12/09

I think the remake thing is just a fad due to a few remakes became big money makers for Hollywood. We saw the same thing through out the 80's when they remade a lot of 1950's movies (ex: The Thing, The Blob) Then it pretty much stopped for a while and now they are at it again. A couple more years of it and it will probably stop. Of course at the rate they are remaking movies there wont be a whole lot left to remake..LOL

By MCP-001 at 2:36 PM ON 11/12/09

I agree with Vano75.

A remake of the classic "Robot Monster"!!!

Can you image just how much better that will look with CGI?

Maybe throw in some gratutious sex scenes to place the fanboys posting the articles here on Sci Fi Wire will help to generate buzz.

By MUADIB at 2:41 PM ON 11/12/09

DAMN IT !! Snookerd again.I though this story was going to be about LARRY VINCENT AS SEYMOR and the show he hosted when i was a kid in the early 70's called FRIGHT NIGHT .Anyone remember him?

By keith at 3:21 PM ON 11/12/09

Whats next? Gremlins? Once bitten? Cmon!

By spaceage whizkid at 3:24 PM ON 11/12/09

the main thing that stuck in my mind about that movie was Amanda Bearse as the neighborhood hottie chosen by the vampire. that's right, Al Bundy's neighbor was the hero's dream girl that needed saved.

By Aerynsboy at 3:36 PM ON 11/12/09

Come on SyFy! Get it right! Your description of Fright Night says Charlie finds out that his "Neighbors" are Vampires. That's a big no buddy. Jerry Dandridge was the only Vampire. BIlly Cole was NOT a Vampire. As for the remake...now that's news that sucks!

@MUADIB,

I suspect if we check the producers we'll see Banjo Billy and Moona Lisa are behind this outrage.

By gorehound696 at 5:24 PM ON 11/12/09

At this point between the remakes/reboots and the MPAA & Hollywood trying to lobby goverments to implimate 3 strikes your out laws and blocking up the analog port on newer cable boxes and the list goes on.
I now am no longer even bothering to buy nay ,ovies new.I BOYCOTT YOU !!!

What is with all these remales of the last five years:

Halloween

Friday the 13th

Nightmare on Elm street

Child's Play (in the works)

Stephen King's It (in the works)

Children of the Corn (Syfy, that hurt my head)

Never-ending story (in the works)

The Witches (in the works)

Interview with the vampire (rumored)

Total recall (in the works)

By XCalPro at 8:18 AM ON 11/13/09

Nothing can be worse than they are rebooting The Three Stooges... SACRILEGE!!!!

By JFL at 10:55 AM ON 11/13/09

ZERO chance for improvement

By Leis at 12:06 PM ON 11/13/09

Uh.....this was ALREADY remade, and the remake aired on Siffy!! Seriously, Fright Night was a story about a teen, his love interest, his horror-obsessed best friend and a local tv host being terrorized by a charismatic vampire who lived next door. Never Cry Werewolf was the story of a teen, her love interest, a local late-night tv-host(starting to see a pattern here? lol) all being terrorized by the charismatic neighbor, who happens to be a werewolf. Do we really need ANOTHER rip-off of Fright Night???

By muadib at 2:05 PM ON 11/13/09

I remember "moona lisa'!! i had forgotten about that preelvira host. banjo billy is a vauge memory though but i remember the name .God we're old aren't we?

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 6:39 PM ON 11/13/09

@muadib,

Billy was Seymour's nemesis played by the same actor, Larry Vincent, in a dual role.

Moona Lisa was played by the identical twin sister to the actress that played the best of the various versions of the Larry Tate character's wife Louise on BEWITCHED.

I always thought Roddy McDowall's costume in FRIGHT NIGHT was influenced by Seymour's and most likely an homage.

Old? Only in years....

By skyhawk at 9:27 PM ON 11/13/09

Remake "Battlefield Earth." (Did I post that publicly?)

By cylonbluerabbit at 8:45 PM ON 11/14/09

@skyhawk LOL

that should have been done first LOL

By eric at 3:05 PM ON 01/28/10
