Outer Space Astronauts premieres online tomorrow! (video)

We know some of you had, um, opinions about the upcoming newest Syfy series Outer Space Astronauts, and we're happy to give you a sneak peek at the show, which debuts next month (but we'll give you a look at the first episode early; see below).

Outer Space Astronauts is a futuristic comedy series about eight vaguely courageous, highly distractible military personnel who journey to the far reaches of the galaxy seeking knowledge, adventure ... and whatever else they can come up with. The crew of the O.S.S. Oklahoma are led by a lackluster captain who would rather be planning the next "margarita Monday" than leading a mission against evil, much to the exasperation of his by-the-book second-in-command.

Outer Space Astronauts premieres Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT) following the season finale of Syfy's hit reality series Scare Tactics at 9 p.m.

But you can view the first episode exclusively on Syfy.com's Rewind section tomorrow! Watch, then let us know what you think.

This was supposed to make us feel better about this trash? Epic Fail!

By Eldon at 2:28 PM ON 11/18/09

All I can say is what a load of ......

By jdmimic at 2:39 PM ON 11/18/09

Ok, I don't like commenting when I know nothing of a show, but now that I have seen a clip of the show, it does indeed look pretty bad.If the clip is truly indicative of the show, I will not be watching. The animation/live mix is inferior for a web show, much less a network-aired venture.
What was that show they tested out on the website a few years ago? Screwhead or something? I thought that was much better and deserved a shot much more than this.
I did like the idea of trying out new shows on the web to get an indication of their appeal though.

By Praetor ShinzonII at 2:39 PM ON 11/18/09

Sounds like "MASH in Outer Space" to me.

By Langly at 2:47 PM ON 11/18/09

After watching that I wouldn't waste any time on it. What were they thinking to produce such a piece of trash....

By Scrix at 2:57 PM ON 11/18/09

You're kidding, right?

By Guy Guy at 3:01 PM ON 11/18/09

Looks funny to me. I never comment but seeing the screw job people were doing the other day, I'll add my $0.02. They said it's low budget, it looks low budget, but when has that stopped something from being good? I could name several lo-fi good shows on Adult Swim. I say give it a chance.

By Falconer at 3:11 PM ON 11/18/09

Here's a better idea. RESCUE series like Dollhouse that were killed before their time by mundane schmucks at the major networks. THAT WOULD GET VIEWERS!

By Trace at 3:44 PM ON 11/18/09

I just wish SyFy would give us the kind of shows we really want and can't find elsewhere, namely great science fiction. Not wrestling, reality shows, schlocky monster movies or what appears to be a crappy semi animated cartoon. A parody would work much better if it was surrounded by several examples of great science fiction.

By David A. Smith at 3:47 PM ON 11/18/09

how dare syfy make new shows that strive to be different. dont they see that their all important fan base, the people who spew hate in these forums, are getting upset? put on farscape or some other old show that not enough people watched when it was on, stop trying to entertain the largest group of people possible. pick up dollhouse. after all even stargate universe beat dollhouse in the ratings. please syfy, listen to the loudmouths on this website. they seem to have really good ideas and constructive criticism worth listening to

By Kirk at 3:56 PM ON 11/18/09

@ David

I try to be open-minded concerning syfy programming, but the highlight of that trailer was some person hitting the other in there naughty bits...

How juvenile do u have to be to find that funny...

And dont even get me started on there name, logo, slogin changes.

By CorpVandolay at 4:01 PM ON 11/18/09

I think this show looks creative and entertaining. I'm glad that SyFy (I'll never get used to that new name) is giving some new programming a chance. I'll be there on December 8th to check it out!

By Cleatus Ramone at 4:26 PM ON 11/18/09

I remember watching the teaser clips a couple years ago when SyFy was considering picking this show up. I laughed my butt off. So now that it's actually airing, I find it interesting to see the fear that lies within people to actually see any other light than the one flickering in their parents basement. Finally some humor in our lives. To me, this looks fresh, entertaining, and something I would watch. I never watch SyFy channel, but I will now, to catch his show. Low budget? hmm no one has ever seen a pilot? The hard work that went into this is probably 100x more than flying a spaceship through some galaxy. The creativity, and new animation style in this looks appealing. Pull your heads out of your butts, put down your captain Kirk costume (it needs to be washed anyway) and accept something other than an alien bigfoot or space lasers. This show looks great.

By gadgets at 4:35 PM ON 11/18/09

+1 on the backlash against the negative commenters. Although Cleatus is kind of insulting, I think he's just going to the level the comment sections been at for the past few months. I don't personally care about the name change, I find it funny that some people can't get past it, and dammit I like SGU, WH13 and Eureka. I find it odd that there are so many complaints that there are no science fiction shows on syfy, I can justify just about every show that's not wrestling, and I can easily change the channel on wrestling. Anyway, I'm glad a few people are lightening up. I wanna see more of this outerspace show, guess I'm coming back tomorrow.

By islesfan at 4:44 PM ON 11/18/09

Please don't be the Krod Mandoon of the Syphillis Network!

By Melinda C May at 4:46 PM ON 11/18/09

I too remember seeing the teaser clips and I too laughed my butt off. If these new episodes are anything like those teaser clips this show's gonna be awesome!

By Flash!Ahhhh at 4:58 PM ON 11/18/09

"How juvenile do u have to be to find that funny..."
@Kirk- What kind of high-brow artistic chuckles were you expecting? Did you think perhaps this was a show based on a political comic from the New Yorker? Are you okay? I don't even have an opinion on this show yet but you sound like the most stuck up little bunny that's ever hopped through here.

By Kirk at 5:13 PM ON 11/18/09

Trailer

Text text text

A guy talking .5 second after that and bam a guy hit out of no where.

If there was a lead up perhaps. But that's just forced down your throat. You call that funny?

Show might be ok, but the trailer was lacking.....

Whats with all the personal attacks.
You cant defend your likeness of the trailer / show without getting all personal about it.

Its just a show.

I was just commenting on the trailer . If u like it more power to you. I just dont understand how intelligent adults find that funny.

By ETo at 7:58 PM ON 11/18/09

Wow, 4 of the shows actors and 2 Syfy staffers came out to defend this awful show. If that was a clip of "highlights", then you wasted your money. Hopefully you can get a refund on the deposit.

If you have to resort to personal attacks to defend the show, you may want to re-evaluate your position.

By JC918 at 9:05 PM ON 11/18/09

I for one am really looking forward to this show. So SyFy is trying to broaden their viewing audience, is that what people are afraid of? Some of you take everything way to seriously and are so judgemental of something that you have had very little exposure to. Just because you don't like something, doesn't make it awful. I may not like you, does that make you worthless?

By upnadam at 10:02 PM ON 11/18/09

Friggin Awesome! I have seen the creators works and get the comedic chemistry he brings the way I get scrubs. I can't get enough. I did not think I would like scrubs but once I got a taste of it I could not get enough. Why the hell marginalize the possibilities before seeing the actual show?

By MinnesotaSooner at 11:37 PM ON 11/18/09

I'm looking forward to it. Looks very creative. TV could use some more originality like this.

By NERVA at 12:22 AM ON 11/19/09

Another crappy show on SyFy. The folks who will watch it are a bunch of morons. So... if the objective of the SyFy channel is to broaden it's audience to include morons... they're on the right track.

By lilalicious at 12:44 AM ON 11/19/09

I will so be watching this. I am grateful that there are still creative souls out there who strive to be funny and unique in the face of the crapfest they are up against and the mind-boggling obstacles to actually get picked up. This show looks hilarious and fresh in a spoofy way. As to the level of humor, I defy you to say Southpark is not HILARIOUS!!

By zah at 3:02 AM ON 11/19/09

the promo made me laugh. In fact I remember seeing the clips a while back on here and thinking I wanted to see more. Most of the hate that has been spewed is towards the network and not towards this show. It looks outside the box it's not about a stargate, or hot blonde robots, so the nerds are freaking out.

dear vengeful nerds, watch the show and judge it on its own merit. Stop comparing apples and oranges.

I think the idea is fun, it's unlike anything I've seen and seems accessible unlike a lot of the stuff I watch on adult swim. I will be watching on December 8th with an open mind.

By sg1spoilergate at 8:54 AM ON 11/19/09

Yikes!

This makes SyFy's Flash Gordon look like Oscar material ... NOT!

I'll be reading a book, or watching paint dry, or anything but this.

By willhh3 at 9:38 AM ON 11/19/09

Lame!

Hey Sci-Fi....er Sy-Fy, how about working on some quality meaningful sci-fi to bridge the gap left by BSG. There are so many great tales to be told and you give us a comedy (which I don't mind) with crappy cut-out characters!? Bold move for these aspiring actors. Good luck with this one....i won't be one of the viewers.

By YakNose at 11:12 AM ON 11/19/09

Very well, I have watched the entire premiere episode. It is every bit as juvenile and tasteless as I expected. Its sole virtues seem to be that it has nothing to do with either ghosts or wrestling.

I would much rather watch re-runs of something with a good plot than see any more of that show.

By Guildenstern at 1:40 PM ON 11/19/09

I watched the first episode, and this show is freaking awesome. It's one of the most original things I've seen in years! What is WRONG with you, naysayers?

By YakNose at 2:32 PM ON 11/19/09

I'm not interested in originality nearly so much as I am in quality. It seems like any cleverness in the show is aimed at inebriated males aged 18-30, which, I am very afraid, is the entire point.

I want something with real storylines, and good characters, and absolutely no lowest-common-denominator humor.

By YakNose at 2:43 PM ON 11/19/09

Also, now that I think about it, what exactly is original about it? Every character is a stereotype, idiot, or lunatic (or more than one of these), you don't have anyone with enough brains to generate any kind of interesting plot, and there surely have been enough shows based on the idea of lots of idiots being put together in one environment.

What are the points in favor of this show?

By ETo at 2:44 PM ON 11/19/09

Wow, that premiere episode may be the worst 21 minutes of television ever purchased by a network!

Are you really going to charge for advertising during this show?

By Cavitation at 3:45 PM ON 11/19/09

It seems to be another US ripoff of a British TV Series "Hyperdrive". The history of US adaptations of British science fiction is not good. I hope the BBC is getting some money at least from the new producers...

By TwikiTwue at 5:42 PM ON 11/19/09

Just watched the premier...HILARIOUS! But I truly don't get the bile spewing from all of the commenters who haven't even seen it yet. Lighten up...it's comedy. The actors' heads on cartoon bodies alone made me giggle. Can't wait to watch the broadcast in higher res...

By OrchidStation at 7:06 PM ON 11/19/09

Epic Fail.

scratch that...just a fail...theres nothing epic about it.

By DK at 9:43 PM ON 11/19/09

I'm sorry, but anyone praising this series, if you are not connected to the show, or the syfy channel trying to do damage control, then I feel sorry for you. The poor animation I can excuse if the writing and jokes were clever in any way. However it is one ball joke after another, topped off with the captain putting his arse on the panel to set off the self destruct. This is the crap that pulls TV down! I love idiotic humor when done well, but 5th graders could have written better. So anyone who is defending this show, please tell me you are doing this because you are connected to the production in some way and want it to succeed. If you are not... then I am so sorry for you. This is trash... and poorly executed trash... which is the worst part of all.

By dk at 9:50 PM ON 11/19/09

One more comment... even the animation and style aside, the editing and pacing is wooden and stale. There is no comedic timing, chemistry or interaction. It is obvious everyone recorded their head sequences separately and had no real interaction in the dialogue recording. Even for an animated project this is directed horribly. This would make Chuck Jones roll over in his grave knowing this is where animation has gone. I'd be fine with the idea and style if the content was executed well in any way. Okay... last comment... I promise.

By Paul at 3:32 PM ON 12/29/09

Worst thing yet on Syphillus channel. Time to delete SciFi from my favorite channel screen. (Used to be my only requirement for a cable tier)

By massivemushroom at 9:14 PM ON 12/29/09

Unfortunately for the poor uninformed elitist morons...this show will be a huge hit as it appeals to the masses whose foreheads slope just a smidge and there are fn millions of us brothers. So watch out all that pan the existince of OSA ...this is what the doctor ordered for all those that yearn for somethong that falls between...spaceballs..ice pirates and the original Thunderbirds..( for you idiots I am speaking of parodies and puppets..what a combo...are our memories that short and we forget the popularity of Team America. Let me name some of you idiot non believers..paul,cavitation,dk,orchidstation to name a few.....OSA's success will be my reward and your punishment you mental midgets..Peace out and all my love...oh yeah ...2 words...duty log...(pronounced..doodie log...please insert sophomoric giggle here.)

By shodan at 12:37 AM ON 02/28/10
