Roland Emmerich confirms plans for a 2012 TV show

Roland Emmerich confirms plans for a \<i\>2012\<\/i\> TV show

Roland Emmerich's already controversial world-destroying movie 2012 isn't even in theaters yet, but there are reports he's mulling a follow-up TV show called 2013.

How can there be a follow-up show to a movie about the end of the world, you ask? (Spoilers ahead!)

Well, according to CinemaBlend, there are some survivors, and the show would pick up their story:

As speculated, the new series will be called 2013 and will focus on the aftermath of the cataclysmic events of the film. With the world in disarray, it's time to rebuild. Emmerich says it's "not the bright happy future everyone was imagining" when the film ends. Instead, things look bleak. But this is humanity, so of course we can rise up from this.

Emmerich will reportedly model the proposed show on Lost and the sci-fi action movie District 9: big casts, complex storytelling and a gritty, realistic style.

Keep in mind this is all pie in the sky, since the movie's not out yet and could tank. Also, name a TV show based on a sci-fi movie that managed to be a big hit, besides the Stargates. Anyone?

2012 opens Nov. 13.

Remember when Van Helsing came out and Summers said they would use the sets for a tv show called Transylvania?

Terminator: TSCC - Not a big hit (ok, you could argue about that) but still a decent show

By ScottyT at 4:00 PM ON 11/05/09

I think the TV show sounds a hundred times better than the trailers make the movie look!

By General at 4:03 PM ON 11/05/09

star wars: the clone wars
Terminator: the sarah connor chronicles

Buffy (and Angel) is the best answer. Nice slam dunk there Jinxieman :)

Hmmm another post-apocalyptic show (well maybe a bit worse)

But Jericho, Jeremiah (Showtime), The non-shown...Day One Series.

Maybe the Witches of Eastwick ...though that was like what now....20 yrs later?

By Praetor ShinzonII at 4:07 PM ON 11/05/09

Bad idea. I think his concept for 2012 is all wrong. The TV sequel sounds a lot like a little fan favorite series called "Jericho".
I won't be viewing the movie that's for sure.

By fanshawe at 4:08 PM ON 11/05/09

Is Chiwetel Ejiofor one of the survivors in the movie? If he is in the show, count me in.

By Imagine at 4:20 PM ON 11/05/09

I just hope it won't be all about the left over military and, polotitions and, how they are going to go around trying to rebuild the old government. That would be boring and really suck. I would rather see a show about how the people try to rebuild their lives. For instance, if it was me, I would want to just find a plot of, what ever land I could find, and try to set up a home for my self and family; and not be bothered with the rest of the world. I should think that would be a healing time for a lot of survivers and, what they would really want is for things to settle before we get back in to polotics and military orders. I know it's not realistic but, it's kind of how I feel right now, with things the way they are in this country.

I think we need to see how the movie does before making a TV show. The movie hardly looks any better or different from The Day After Tomorrow and that movie wasn't all that great.

yup who cares............
This is a Disaster

By Dillan at 6:41 PM ON 11/05/09

Some examples, besides Stargate:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel
Smallville*
Alien Nation
Young Indiana Jones**
La Femme Nikita**

* Heavily inspired by the movies
** Not really sci-fi, but cult none-the-less!

You really don't do research do you?

Scifi shows based on films that did well:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Seven season and emmies)

Highlander the series (six seasons and gemini awards)

Weird Science (had at least three seasons)

Young Indiana Jones

Batman the animated series (which took stuff from Burton's films)

Men in black the animated series (Lasted at least three seasons)

Beetlejuice the animated series (four seasons)

Sabrina the Teenage witch (film first which was based on the comics).

By REDante at 7:49 PM ON 11/05/09

Oh come on, lets be realistic. There would be no economy, no governments, just militias, new cults, dictators, anarchy....hmmmm think of every possible disturbing thing you hear on the news today, and imagine it happening 10 times worse in a post disaster world like that. In common sense the stuff that goes on, theres no way they can broadcast that on network television.

By Mandy at 7:50 PM ON 11/05/09

Highlander the series did VERY well.

And as others mentioned, Buffy.

By Chib at 9:02 PM ON 11/05/09

Why would you say besides the FOUR Stargate series spawned from the movie? This is the most important one to point out especially since Roland Emmerich made the friggen Stargate movie.

By Des_Shinta at 9:14 PM ON 11/05/09

Is this one of those articles from that one staff member that doesn't actually research his offhand comments, then gets his ass handed to him by the commenter's? Hi again, you must like kissing it.

Aside from all the above, Tremors made out with two good sequels, a decent series and another film.

By r at 9:27 PM ON 11/05/09

considering that this new film is based on mythology (as was the last one: The Day After Tomorrow), and that Emmerich has pussied out (refuses to upset the Moooslems) there is nothing in this movie worth seeing....I'll watch Abram's Star Trek at home instead.

By AngryJonny at 9:57 PM ON 11/05/09

Cool. I've always wanted to see what society does after movies like ID4, The Day After Tomorrow, and Deep Impact end, so, hopefully, 2013 will happen.

By macmikey at 11:58 PM ON 11/05/09

Sounds like BSG without anywhere to go.

So basically they gave the ending away. Why can't they make disaster films where everyone dies!

BLOOD DEATH SPURT KILL KILL KILL!

By Mayan Calendar Portal at 1:14 AM ON 11/06/09

All the disasters, death and destruction are getting a little old. Not to mention the fact the living Maya and their Elders have always said their Calendar is NOT, and has not, foretelling the end of the world. The Long Count was abandoned 1,000 years ago, then rediscovered by scholars.

It would be great for Hollywood to make a film that is based on cultural accuracy and respect, and engages you in a powerful story not based on fear or violence.

Finally, for those interested in learning more about the Mayan Calendar, check out maya-portal.net.

Hey I've got a winner!
"TITANIC 2"
Everyone who went down with the ship are trapped in watertight compartments, and they resort to canibalism to survive and reduce the consumption of the remaining air...
Should be good for 20 episodes at least...

By ulic at 8:17 AM ON 11/06/09

"lso, name a TV show based on a sci-fi movie that managed to be a big hit, besides the Stargates. Anyone?"

Um. There was this little show called M*A*S*H that ran for eleven years and its finale still holds the record for most watched episode of anything, ever. No. It wasn't science fiction or fantasy. But it WAS based on the 1970 hit movie. So there.

By okham at 8:26 AM ON 11/06/09

Ghostbusters had quite a while as a cartoon show.

By Walt at 8:51 AM ON 11/06/09

what's up with this apocalypse fetish?

By divephotog at 10:09 AM ON 11/06/09

Ah yes... the themes of the poorest and worst recent sci-fi (horror more like, or maybe just horrorible) incarnations, being the end of everything due to flood, earthquake, avalanche, fire, comets, and brimstone (and not any real science in one of them).

Give us real sci-fi, with the stuff that it is supposed to have, like innovation, new tech to expound upon, some real science and thinking in it's development, and positive outlooks for some part of mankind.

So many well written books out there that do have these themes, why are we dwelling on the horror side of the coin? -kh

By tricksterpup at 3:07 PM ON 11/06/09

how about Buck Rogers
And didn't the original Battlestar Galactica have a theatrical run as well?

By jimspar at 6:10 PM ON 11/06/09

Has anyone else grown tired of this guy destroying the world? I think i'm just bored with his over the top fx, seeing the trailer made me want to see this movie even less. I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just wondering if it's just me.

By DJP at 11:22 AM ON 11/07/09

The trailer looks so fake and ridiculous I am already disappointed. I know you have to suspend belief to a degree with sci-fi but that scene in the limo outrunning the earthquake goes way too far.

By lookn_4_stars at 11:12 AM ON 11/09/09

At the time it came out, I heard that Buckaroo Banzai was going to be made into a series. That would've been alot of fun if they kept the sense of humor from the movie. Too bad we'll never know.

By jolinar at 10:52 PM ON 11/09/09

Can you say, Waterworld (2013). lol
