Remember we reported that Stargate SG-1's Michael Shanks would play Hawkman in an upcoming episode of The CW's Smallville?
Well, TV Guide has posted a sneak-peek image of Shanks in the full costume, which you can marvel at above.
To which we say ... wha? Really? That's their Hawkman outfit?
Well, they tried to stay true to the comic-book look of the character (see below), but given how they've stylized and snazzed up the costumes for everyone from the Flash to Green Arrow over the years, wouldn't you think they'd come up with something a bit less ... cheesy and on the nose?

Maybe it'll look better in action. Shanks dons the Hawkman costume in a two-hour movie event featuring the Justice Society, airing Feb. 5, 2010; the second hour is directed by Tom Welling, who stars as Clark Kent.
What do you think of Shanks as Hawkman?
By Hawkguy at 11:28 PM ON 11/16/09
The premise of this episode is that the Justice Society had previously existed, so this outfit may be indicative of the past. Hence, it not being snazzed up. People who are going to complain about this being too faithful to the look in the comic book are also the ones who complain about other costumes and stories not being faithful to the comics. This story is being done by the very capable Geoff Johns, so I believe it will be pretty good. People are going to whine no matter what they do.

This could be totally interesting. I love Smallville, and I love Shanks so I guess we shall see :) The casting of the show is usually very well so I can't see them making a blunder with Shanks.

haha oh man that first picture made me burst out laughing hysterically. I love everything Michael Shanks does. That's HILARIOUSLY bad. I hope it's what it really looks like.
By Stone at 11:34 PM ON 11/16/09
looks like a wax museum-type pose.
By AngryJonny at 12:06 AM ON 11/17/09
I thought his wings would be... bigger.
Still, big Hawkman fan, big Shanks fan, so I'm keeping an open mind. Heck, Geoff Johns, a two-hour Justice Society movie event... there would have to be a lot wrong for this not to be cool.

"but given how they've stylized and snazzed up the costumes for everyone from the Flash to Green Arrow over the years"
You call a red hooded sweatshirt "stylized and snazzed up"? I call it doing it on the cheap.
By gxknight at 12:16 AM ON 11/17/09
Love the Shanks... Hate the Hawk.
Hawkshanks?
Still, I can't wait to see it. I know it's going to be great. Michael rocks, and Smallville rocks. I'm keeping an open mind. It's just a pic (granted a bad one).
By shadow at 12:20 AM ON 11/17/09
Shanks has taken too many trips through the gate to come out like this. Come on Shanks... you could have done better.
By djzilla at 12:23 AM ON 11/17/09
Noooooooooooo! He's wearing a breast plate!!!! I asked for shirtless Shanks and this is what I get! Damn you Smallville!!!!
:-(
PS Shanks arms look too small there too, and he needs to do some more shoulder exercises. Work those deltoids baby!
By kev74 at 1:40 AM ON 11/17/09
That picture doesn't even look real.
By Daroru at 5:08 AM ON 11/17/09
You sure that's a photo? Looks painted to me.
By rodee at 6:07 AM ON 11/17/09
Are they kidding. At the very least, the Hawkman costume should've kept with tradition. He just looks like he's so heavy flying would be a burden, and what's up with the leather.
By mac90000 at 6:41 AM ON 11/17/09
I think a sliders remake would be really cool. but the hawkman out looks very good to me
By InfiniteMonkey at 6:59 AM ON 11/17/09
That costume looks all kinds of Halloween gone wrong. Its FAKE!
By diesel at 7:54 AM ON 11/17/09
Very cool. I was worried they weren't going to make him like the comics and do something like the Flash Gordon series did on Sci Fi channel.
The Justice Society episode looks like it is going to be great. Smallville is fantastic. This is turning out to be a great season. The episode with the Wonder Twins was great.
I really want them to start a Justice League series next year. They should keep Michael Shanks as Hawkman. He is a great actor.
I also want them to add Jessica Biel or Olivia Munn as Wonder Woman.
By ETo at 8:22 AM ON 11/17/09
Wow, Shanks needs to work on the upper body, particularly the arms and shoulders.
By faythan at 8:33 AM ON 11/17/09
is it just me or does that costume look suspiciously like the old flash gordon movies birdmen costumes?
By marvi1 at 8:55 AM ON 11/17/09
I was surprised that they even considered the Hawkman character for the show, but making him an older hero from the (disbanded?) JSA was a good idea.
By Red Mask at 9:25 AM ON 11/17/09
How is that cheesy in a show called Smallville? You should be shocked at how out of shape he looks!
By gxknight at 10:41 AM ON 11/17/09
Hmmmm..... is there a familiar blue glow in the room where that shot was taken? ;-)
By WillSDCA at 11:17 AM ON 11/17/09
I don't think it's a photo, it looks like a stylized sketch of a scene.
By RobotDickens at 11:19 AM ON 11/17/09
I always thought that Hawkman was the dorkiest looking DC hero right next to Plastic man. Grundy smash bird nose!
By stargazer_1682 at 11:35 AM ON 11/17/09
I've seen this elsewhere and I'm still not convinced this isn't a rendering. It doesn't look like a real still or capture at all.
I don't know what the hubbub is about; out of all the far out costume designs, I would say Hawkman's is one that could easily stand the test of time; it's very simplistic, with an edge to it.
The leather pants make perfect sense as a measure of him being a tough guy.
While I was skeptical about how Shanks would look shirtless, I'm not sure how I feel about the breastplate; which I understand was to cover up the rigging for the wings and harness.
Guess I'll wait to see a real, good picture of him, suited up.
By teampi at 12:12 PM ON 11/17/09
Maybe there will be a "HawkShanks" Redemption for his costume later...
By Dave at 1:42 PM ON 11/17/09
Michael Shanks looked bigger when he guest starred in "Burn Notice". My how he shrunk.
By greenecho at 3:04 PM ON 11/17/09
when will they bring Batman into the show
casting suggesting , Jensen Eckles
By Yoggie at 3:15 PM ON 11/17/09
This is an obvious artist rendering and not a photo. Look at the computer consoles and the shadows. Yes, you can photoshop a pic to look like that, but why? Maybe it is an illustration being used in the show.
By melsner at 3:51 PM ON 11/17/09
Greenecho, Jensen Eckles already had a season long role as Lana Lang's boyfriend. His mother was played by Jane Seymour.
By psyched48 at 7:28 PM ON 11/17/09
Really, that is the costume? What 1980s Flash Gordon was having a sale on Ebay? Hawkmen Die!!!
By sanga at 11:06 PM ON 11/17/09
So is it me or cant anyone make a ood set of hawkman wings. Those look as bad as the hawkmen from the Flash Gordon movie in the '80's. As for shanks love him the episode should be good. If they were going to make metal looking wings they should have made the metallic ones from warhawks suit of armor in Justice League Unlimited. And the Wonder Twins were awesome hope to see them back sson. And is shanks supposed to be the human hawkman with fake wings or the thanagarian hawkman with real wings guess we'll have to wait and see and where has the manhunter been?

I think it's perfect for the following reasons: JSA are from an alternate timeline universe somewhere out of the 1930's and 40's (maybe a decade or two later). This Hawkman and his outfit should look a lot different from our Hawkman of the JLA- our Hawkman is younger and more buff, even Hawkgirl (she's hotter, too =D
Therefore, Shanks (as hysterical as he looks- and really, no muscles at all, Mikey?? Tsk-tsk!) , he is a perfect fit and will do well to help Kal-El become the Hero he is destined to be.
By LissaB33 at 10:03 PM ON 11/22/09
Looks like something from that Flash movie and im not talking about the DC one!
By uniwarden at 3:10 AM ON 11/23/09
That's not Shanks in there! We've seen Michael in the Air episode of SGU and his arms are much thicker than that... I believe its a costume test piece that was released to increase the hype... Besides it looks rendered... As far as Dr. Daniel Jackson goes, I can't wait for Stargate: Revolution
By Higgy at 3:47 PM ON 11/28/09
Shanks is great, and Smallville is awesome, but... In the words of Jim Gaffigan, "Fruit good, Cake great... Fruitcake; nasty crap." Sometimes putting things together, just because they're good individually, doesn't mean they're good together. However, I'm betting this episode will rock. Love Shanks, Love Smallbville. Can't wait.
