Here's a TV miniseries we'd see: Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Stephen King's new sci-fi/horror novel Under the Dome.
Variety reports that Spielberg and King will develop a limited series based on King's just-released book; DreamWorks TV has optioned the book and is looking to set it up as an event series, likely for cable:
Book, which has earned strong reviews as a return to form for the prolific author, revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force field suddenly descends on a small vacation town in Maine. As the locals fight for their survival, the town descends into warring factions led by enigmatic characters.
King and Spielberg will executive-produce, and they're looking for a writer to adapt the book.
This would mark a return to TV for both of these prolific creators: Spielberg's best, in our opinion, was Syfy's Taken, and we've always loved the TV miniseries based on King's books, though they've varied widely in quality; maybe our faves are It and The Stand.
Does anyone else think Under the Dome sounds a lot like the story of the Simpsons movie?
What do y'all think of this new miniseries? Will you watch?

Didn't "The Simpsons Movie" do this idea already? God Stephen, get your own ideas!!

King swears that he didn't see "The Simpsons Movie" until after he wrote "Under the Dome".
OK -- but isn't that one of the things an Editor should be watching for?

It would have been awesome if right next to the red barn there was a small metal silo full of pig manure.
Spider pig, spider pig, doing whatever a spider pig does...

That was SciFi's, "Taken," and it was a very good series :)

As you all know, I am Emperor of Springfield. As, um supreme ruler of all domes, I insist on a percentage of all earnings from this film, or its suicide again for me.....

Also sound a lot like the Twilight Zone episode "A Nightmare on Elm Street"....?

The whole invisible dome thing was also key element in the comic book series 'Girls' written by the Luna Brothers about 3 or 4 years ago...

I also seem to remember an Outer Limits episode from the 90's that was about a town sealed off by an invisible force field but so what? Just because an idea was already written about you can never write about that idea ever again? As long as the writer does something different with it and gives in an interesting spin it doesn't matter if there already was a similar idea. We might as well totally shut down the entertainment industry if something has to be 100 percent original. Is it possible to be 100 percent original anymore?

FYI- King originally had the idea for Under the Dome in the 1970's and made two attempts to complete a full manuscript- once in the 70's and once in the 80's. So while the idea has been done recently by others, King's novel is based on his own premise from almost 40 years ago.

The book is over a thousand pages and King , while prolific at one time, has always taken his time with writing; the Gunslinger saga was started when he was in college in the 60's and wasn't finished until almost 40 years later. Under the Dome was orginally started in the 1970's and has been worked on for almost thity years, on and off.
This whole article would take a differnt tone and meaning if the staff had done some research. and by some reasearch I mean any. This site has gone down hill so much in the last few months.

Outer Limits Original Series did Feasability Study with the town walled off behind a force filed. But the town was brought to another planet it turned out.
And they redid the episode for the 90's new Outer Limits

Laslo - You assume those of us pointing out other stories with the same elements are saying that this makes it wrong for King to have written this story. Personally, the concept interests me (isolation, human behavior, etc) and I like finding out what other stories have used the same concepts... I just finished King's book and it is very good and very different from these other stories highlighted here!

The only King book that transfered well to television was Salem's Lot. All the others ranged from mediocre to utterly terrible.
And Spielberg's "Taken" was dreadful rubbish that was padded out beyond belief.
Considering this, and that Under The Dome is far from an original idea anyway, and this project sounds pretty crap before it even starts.

Jack Williamson's "Dome Around America" (1955) rules the dome genre, yo.

It does sound a little like The Simpsons movie but will it be as big of a let down?

Joan Slonczewski's 1989 novel _Wall Around Eden_ has all human communities on Earth walled off by mysterious transparent impenetrable domes. (http://www.amazon.com/Wall-Around-Eden-Joan-Slonczewski/dp/038071177X/ref=pd_sim_b_2)

Like others who have already said it,s been done before I,ll hope that this one is better written with a good plot I,ve always liked Stephen King and I,ll try to maintain an open mind but given the way things are going in tinsel town at the minute they tend to rehash good stories quickly and as cheaply as possible for a quick profit. For example I hated the most recent version of Salem,s Lot

No one did the dome idea as King has done.He has taken the real science of such an occurrence and laid it out for all to see.Lack of oxygen, carbon monoxide poisoning, effects on plant and wild life, dementia from slow poisoning...I didn't see any of that in many of the stories or episodes mentioned.
