Here's a list of our hottest stories (and you definitely found the bikini Leia and her stunt double above hot) and best comments this week, in case you missed anything. Consider it a DVR for SCI FI Wire.
Enjoy!
Our story: Bikini Leia and her stunt double nap in the Tatooine sunshine
Your best comment: Brings back memories...I was actually on the set when it was near my hometown of Yuma, AZ (filmed at Dunes in California nearby) when I was about 8. Although I don't remember this...
Sure was nice was the whole Star Wars franchise was "simpler", am I right?—Iceman_Yuma
Our story: 'Gandalf' has read the Hobbit script and tells us about it
Your best comment: Since 1992 I've had Gandalf tattooed on my left arm and Smaug on my right... Do you think I'm psyched?!?— Tolkien Fan
Our story: Ouch! The New York Times brutally slams V
Your best comment: 1935: Sinclair Lewis writes "It Can't Happen Here", a political novel about fascism taking over the United States.
1982: Kenneth Johnson pitches his script "Storm Warning", based on Sinclair's novel, to NBC execs, who reject it saying it's too cereberal.
1983: Kenneth Johnson re-writes "Storm Warning", making the American fascists flesh eating aliens, and wa-la! "V" the original series is born!
2009: "V" is re-imagined with obvious references to the current administration's attempts at controlling the U.S. economy and the population.
Is there any wonder now WHY the NYT is attacking the movie?—kmkahuna
Our story: TV ratings: Every fall sci-fi show compared by number of viewers
Your best comment: I've seen a lot of comments here about Defying Gravity. Wow what a big miss. If you're hung up on the stupid advertising that this is Grey's Anatomy in space don't be. It was a dumb advertising idea and it's completely wrong.
Defying Gravity is a terrific show and it would be a shame if all of the scifi geeks out there (I include myself as a geek) ignored it because it was advertised in a stupid way.—Trixie
Our story: 12 big-ass spoilers for True Blood season 3
Your best comment: I wonder if the writers and creators realise the majority of the fans of the eric/sookie relationship actually have the same views as they do?... I am a fan of eric and sookie relationship. I would like to see the show explore this. But like what others have said. I dont want them to turn into bill and sookie. And not straight away either. Its not organic for one thing, and frankly. I am patient person and would prefer they developed eric and sookie over a period of time. Just like the books.
The whole draw card to the eric and sookie relationship is not the romance. Its the tension. I just want to see more interaction between eric and sookie. Whether that is erics constant teasing, sookie hating his guts. Getting on each others nerves, or the sexual tension that has been set up cleverly by sookies vivid fantasies. I dont care what they show, I just want to see more interaction. Its interesting and damn funny to watch.—whatthehell
Our story: Bryan Singer's Battlestar movie allegedly under way
Your best comment: Setting aside the issue of which TV series was better, this seems like such a ridiculous idea just from a marketing perspective. We just finished up with several years of BSG on television, and now these movie execs believe there will be a substantial audience flocking to the cinema to see yet another take on this story? Films like this cost _a lot_ of money, and it's hard to believe this will be much of a draw for the general public. Even if all the Larson fans in the world lined up and saw this twice, I doubt it would end up in the black. I'm pretty sure most of the Moore fans will skip it altogether.
This strikes me as an ill-advised and financially risky attempt by Larson to reclaim BSG from Moore/Eick and their (to him) morally-depraved and depressingly-dark depiction of the story. Whether audiences in a post-9/11 world can look at Larson's squeaky-clean and cheerful take on the survivors of a genocidal campaign and do anything but laugh . . . well, I think the answer to that is pretty obvious.—Farragut Jones
Our story: How J.J. Abrams snuck Wesley Crusher into Star Trek!
Your best comment:I went to PAX09 this September and had the pleasure of sitting next to Mr. Wheaton's table at a restaurant, on one of the evenings of the convention.
Him and the other keynote speakers for the event were gathered around their table, eating, drinking... whatever.
Wil Wheaton was the loudest and most obnoxious of them all... yelling and complaining about how much he "hates fans". Citing various instances when people came up to ask for his autograph and complaining about other things that people say.
He's not the kind of person that I want to support. He doesn't appreciate it. He was openly insulting the very people that make him the semi-celebrity that he is.
It was very disappointing.—WilWheatonSux
Our story: Lord of the Rings' dwarf warrior says no to Hobbit
Your best comment: in my opinion this is a good thing. why do the same old thing with the same old actors we've seen in the other films. if we wanted the other films, we can watch the other films. i personally want to see something of the depth of the world that Tolkien brought to life in his books--and you just can't do that if you have the same actors playing multiple parts. Gandalf, Bilbo and some of the Elves makes sense, but Gloin does not.—Cyrus
Our story: We finally discover who dies on Heroes
Your best comment: Season 1
You Killed Sylar....You Bastards
Season 2
You Killed Sylar....You Bastards
Season 3
You Killed Sylar... again...
Season 4
You Killed oh.. to hell with it..— Wolftech
Our story: Why Battlestar kicks Star Wars' ass!
Your best comment: Why oh why must we insist on comparing things. Can't we just be happy we have two great SciFi epics and STFU!
Also, for all those here who are complaining about the God cop-out ending in BSG I have one word for you - Midichlorians! I'd rather have god be the over all answer to things than a microorganisim.—G Force
Our story: Joss Whedon wants to buy Terminator! Read his offer here
Your best comment: This TSCC/Dollhouse war is exactly why I'm ashamed to be a sci-fi fan. All these Terminator fans act as if Joss Whedon had some malicious hand to play when it was the network that killed TSCC. They may have made a wrong decision in picking Dollhouse to continue, but by no means does that logically lead to Joss Whedon having the blame squarely on his shoulders.
The pure and honest truth is that TSCC didn't have the ratings. The show runners were attempting to make all these "character development" episodes when the masses who dominate the demographics the networks crave don't dig that. It's more of a statement about the dumbing down of the masses than anything else if those reality shows and "American Idol" shows are any indication.
Science fiction used to mean cerebral storylines with deep introspective thought about our present and future. It used to mean speculation on what might have been or what might be in the future. It used to be a thinking genre. Now, sci-fi has turned into flash in the pan with little substance, turning more into fantasy and removing the science aspect. If there aren't loud noises or flashing lights, those demographics the networks want won't watch.
That's where the ratings come in, and that's why TSCC failed. Dollhouse is in that same boat right now. But what I wish is that this hatred and venom would be directed where it truly should be. I place the blame on allowing this to happen to our genre through substandard stories ("Mansquito," anyone?) and flashy antics.
It's not Joss Whedon's fault, folks. I like his writing style, and I know he's made some crap along with some gems, but that's every writer/producer in the market. In my opinion, TSCC and Dollhouse are good shows, but my thoughts on that are built around my heritage as a classic science-fiction fan. I don't mind good character development inside a strong premise, but I'm also not a subscriber to the current no-substance storytelling that the key demos want.
What is wrong with science fiction fans stopping the petty infighting and bickering? What is wrong with being a unified front asking for better programming and less wrestling, Mansquito, and outright embarrassments to the genre we all love?—Mike
Our story: The real V you never saw: No aliens and no spaceships
Your best comment: The sign of a good story is often pulled from current events. Star Trek TOS was often based on the headlines of the day. The Forever War was an allegory for Viet Nam. It is often what makes a good story. Reaching into the readers heart to illicit an empathetic response.
All that being said, I find it pathetic that one person voices their opinion, in the above case from the right, and another feels the need to completely disavow their point of view. That is how we got to this point, by not listening. We do not always need to agree, we do need to listen and respect an opposing point of view. Often we can learn from a good debate, they are educational tools.
Completely disavowing the opposition is simple cowardice. It is fear that perhaps, just perhaps, they are right in some way. Fear that our own point of view is not as strong as we had thought. Fear of being wrong. Fear is the mirror of ones soul. Anyone who feels the need to belittle another, simply because they have an opposing point of view is a coward. Cowardice is easy on the internet, no one can confront you in person. Its the safety of not being known. That does not change the cowardice being shown. It just make it harder to identify the coward.—TearEmUp
Our story: What even Roland Emmerich won't destroy: an Islamic landmark
Your best comment: I'm amused by the number of hypocritcal comments in response to this article. The amount of ignorant stereotypes here is absolutely apalling. It's pretty sad how people stereotype everyone in the Islamic community based on actions made by INDIVIDUALS, and not Islam as a whole. Every religion, group, organization have extremists. If I'm correct, there was also a group called the KKK, and it still exists as of today. But simply because of actions made by the members of the KKK, I don't go around judging and bashing every white person I see. That would be a disgusting thing to do. It's sad to see that ignorant, uneducated people are continuing to increase in numbers and deteriorating the future advancement of our society.
Ironically, people are saying how they want to "boycott" the movie simply because of this detail.... isn't that a bit extreme? Aren't you, in a way, protesting? I won't answer that because I don't have the place to do so. Unlike some of you, who have managed to do so on behalf all the muslims in the world. How are you qualified to explain the way muslims think?
By the way, I'm a teenager and I know well enough (unlike most of you) on how to express my opinion without incoherently bashing on other religions or groups.—fmorsh

Looks like whomever was picking the best comments for the week was in a thoughtful mood this week. Normally the best comments have been short and comedic. This week they're all long and serious (for the most part).
By MetalPause at 8:59 AM ON 11/07/09
I agree, IronOre. I like this feature a lot but prefer the zingers. :)
(PS I LOVED the Leia image this week! I had never seen that Yuma pic of her before.)
By CENSORSHIP RULES HERE! at 10:09 AM ON 11/07/09
Best story of the week went unreported- Syfy's continuing censorship and deletion of any comment that is critical of Syfy
By TearEmUp at 11:13 AM ON 11/07/09
Yeah, the irony. SyFy chose my comment about intelligent debate as a high light this week. Then, once an intelligent debate breaks out, they delete all those comments....makes you wonder doesn't it?
By Marty B. at 1:11 AM ON 11/08/09
SciFi Wire's editorial policy toward comments is inconsistent. Not ironic.
What is ironic, TearEmUp, is that your "best comment" wasn't so much about a topic but was a meta-discursive point of order. The really ironic thing within that is your claim to be championing "intelligent debate." What you were actually doing was defending Cylon Conspiracy's right to make a ludicrous accusation (specifically his admitted belief that Obama's a fascist) and not be called a loon.
"We got here" to use your phraseology not because people exchange heated words, but because many people were afraid for whatever reason to not call some others on their stupidity. My point, besides underscoring the ill-informed and ill-thought nature of Cylon Conspriacy's assertion that V's thinly veild fascism allegory was clearly in reference to what he sees as Obama's "actual" fascism, was that if you look at the history of the American Presidency (and more broadly American political power) going back to at least Carter ... and I'd say even before then ... there's always a voice speaking fearfully of the encroachment of an "alien" idealogy into the "American Way."
Intellectual debate is one thing. Some things however are just non-starters. SyFy I guess is more interested in flights of fancy of any sort, as opposed to intelligent discussions of those fantasies backed by reason and psychological maturity (as opposed to your Montessori-esque infantile Romper Room view of "open discussion"). Thus, given SciFi Wire's tacit support for Cylon Conspiracy's ability to call Obama a fascist (and the admonition according to the Gospel Comment of the Week authored by Tear Em Up that we must "hear out" such stupidity), I'd say I'd be looking forward to reading John Clute's masterful forthcoming essay on the Turner Diaries as a masterpiece of speculative fiction if I hadn't decided to stop reading this blog in favor of forums where stupidity can be called so.
By Gilveron at 3:21 AM ON 11/08/09
While I should agree with Marty B, I can't, because he called out Romper Room.
By TearEmUp at 5:08 AM ON 11/08/09
Well, I would take issue with you Marty but...You are such an intellectual giant I would be afraid you might invoke Barney the Dinosaur for you next argument. At which point we would all have to hunt you down, and promptly change your diapers.....
By Iis4island at 1:41 PM ON 11/08/09
So, TearEmUp, let's break this down: You have no actual logical argument that you can make to counter Marty B.'s. So instead you make a Beevis and Butthead "heh heh he said Romper Room" reply.
I'm sorry, but you totally proved his point.
By intellectual trash at 1:42 PM ON 11/08/09
Marty B needs to take his thesaurus out of his mouth and operate in teh real world.
By TearEmUp at 2:35 PM ON 11/08/09
@lis4island, it is everyone’s right to say something stupid. If you choose not to enjoy it, that is up to you. Marty's pseudo-intellectual comments were not only not salient to my point. He then proceeded to brag about reading a good book. I’m an avid reader but you do not see me making reference to what I am now, or have read.
His reference to someone making a less than poignant response lends itself to disavowing anyone he deems “less worthy” of not being allowed that freedom. He is one of the new breed of progressives, like Bill Maher “Americans are stupid.” Well, even stupid people share the right to an opinion, and to be allowed to voice it. My opinion is Marty is a low grade moron, over compensating for lack of social skills by belittling anyone with an opposing point of view. In a rather long winded style.
Marty seems to lean more than a little left. Whenever anyone makes a statement from the right, he jumps on them like Gollum trying to regain possession of “The One Ring”. Which, ironically enough, proves my point rather than his.
For clarification purposes, there are several strategies for intelligent debate. I often choose to go for a humorous response. It garners empathy from those put off by an opponents trying to impress with faux high brow comments, like which book they are going to read. Besides, a Barney joke is like Jell-o, there’s always room for it….
By Gilveron at 3:49 PM ON 11/08/09
Also, *I* made the Romper Room joke. And I have a feeling this conversation is also soon headed for Sci-Fi Wire deletion hell.
By JJD at 5:17 PM ON 11/08/09
My comment's better than yours. No, mine's better than yours. Mine's bigger! Nuh uh, mine's bigger!
How easily men get into pissing contests. But the only thing that comes of that is everyone getting pissed on.
By Iis4island at 5:28 PM ON 11/08/09
TearEmUp, you are focusing on surface details of the structure of his argument and not on the underlying principles. That makes you as much of a psycho-intellectual as you say Marty B. is.
Gilveron, I apologize for the incorrect attribution. It was and still is a good joke. As you pointed out, it will not matter soon, because all of these posts will be gone by 8:00am Monday morning anyway.

@JJD: You are totally right. Honestly, I usually don't get involved in these spats. For some reason I fell prey to one today. So, I'm done.
By Iis4island at 5:38 PM ON 11/08/09
And I said I was done! But all of you have to admit that my psycho-intellectual double post editing mistake put a smile on your face. ;)
By TearEmUp at 7:00 PM ON 11/08/09
No, Lis, I'm sorry to disagree with you. My original post that was referenced was about internet anonymity and how it makes it easy for everyone to be rude cowards.
So, when Marty posted his response it supported my original thought. Rather than try to debate, I made a joke, a mockery if you will, to show how absurd Marty's post was....

Great pickup on the tons of remarks made about Defying Gravity - but no news as to whether or not SyFy will take it and run with it???? Would be a real pity if this show was just canned and left to rot somewhere. Come on SyFy - give people with a mental acuity higher than a gumball a chance to witness a brilliant program. There is way too much mental "reality" rot out there being picked up all the time. We want something with substance.
By DefyingLogic at 7:57 PM ON 11/09/09
Great to see one of the comments about Defying Gravity here, but a lot of the comments not shown were asking SyFy to pick up the program and run with it. I too enjoyed the Leia pics :) I am glad that they recognized the Defying Gravity comments. I wish it was on syfy from the beginning, but hopefully they will pick this show up. I can see it being a huge hit. I want to buy an astronaut costume for my wife:) or at least a little tshirt with the DG logo on it.
By Cathy at 8:39 PM ON 11/09/09
I'd be happy if Defying Gravity was shown on SyFy. It's one of the most thought provoking shows I've seen in a long time. Glad about about all the comments about it too.Hope it's picked up and shown on SyFy.
By Mjxpress at 12:01 AM ON 11/10/09
I really really hope that Defying Gravity will be rez-r-ectted with a vengance.... I loved that show...
By Killiandros at 1:52 AM ON 11/10/09
Definitely agree with Defying Gravity being brought back and picked up by SciFi / SyFy. I've been referring friends/family overseas who didn't know about it to watch/download this series online and nearly everyone has loved it.
It was definitely a winner that suffered due to no promotion and poor scheduling. In my opinion, DG achieves what Stargate Universe has attempted (but abysmally failed at) - an intelligent and engrossing story, likeable and talented actors with seemingly genuine on-screen chemistry and deep character progression.
Many of us want to see the way this great show progresses and ultimately ends as the writer originally intended.
Come along for the journey with us SyFy.
By Manuel at 8:15 AM ON 11/10/09
Good chooice of comments!
I totally agree with Trixies comment about DG. Please bring this show back on the screen.

SyFy PLEASE pick up Defying Gravity. It's a fabulous story arc that deserves more then one season. The characters are engaging and the plot thought provoking.

I have been a member here for a Long time and have seen some greats come and go , this year one came and was killed because ABC was fearfull that it would take some of there presious "V"s thunder and it would have in fact I think it was a better show than V . and they knew it they bought it and with NO PR , it went out to air did poorly because no one knew it was comeing and just as it was geting good I know people wear talking about it Ill bet by episode 11 or 12 it would have been at the 4 to 5 million per episode and would have been a sure thing to be picked up next year , It should have been on this station and we would be enjoying it for years to come , Come On SCI FI fix the biggest injustice we have had for many years and save Defying gravity Please air season 1 again next saeson while you are working on season 2 ,
By captin21 at 2:02 AM ON 11/12/09
Here is some insight Dollhouse is canned right ? Well instead of filling it with some Mindless dribble Like this SYFY network has been moveing to give DG its time slot and lets see how it does on your network. I promise I will promote it any way I can, if it means haveing some Family intelegent viewing I would do whatever it takes to get viewers, There are a lot of DG lovers out there and a lot who never even had the pleasure of seeing the show it was on the wrong network and never had the proper start it so deserved ,
By DarnTootin at 1:40 AM ON 11/13/09
All these comments regarding Defying Gravity are absolutely spot on. That is one amazing show that was never given a chance to fully develop. I was sick when ABC (Always Bloody Cancelling) dropped it. Some people just don't know a good thing when they see it. Amazing how we are the one's that watch these shows yet we get absolutely no say in whether or not they continue. SyFy definitely needs to pick up this brilliant show.
