V debuts with MASSIVE ratings

\<i\>V\<\/i\> debuts with MASSIVE ratings

V became the highest rated sci-fi premiere of the new fall TV season after 13.9 million people watched the pilot episode last night, according to preliminary ratings. That number is still subject to some change, but it looks likely that this will be the biggest show to debut at 8 p.m. since another ABC sci-fi series, Lost.

To put that in perspective, FlashForward was (until now) considered the hit of the season after 12.4 million people watched its first episode. The ratings for V are likely to grow substantially once DVR viewership is added in, since sci-fi shows tend to benefit (or suffer?) most from DVR viewing.

For instance, the FlashForward premiere added nearly 2 million viewers after DVR viewing was accounted for. ABC had planned to give V an indeterminate break after running just the first four episodes, but this will likely make them determine a return date ASAP, which is good news for those who liked the show.

If only ABC had done the same marketing and advertising for Defying Gravity, a show that has a future beyond a miniseries, Defying Gravity would be a smash hit instead of a huge cult hit. Bring back DG!! Perhaps ABC should follow V with the remaining episodes of DG, that would by a Sci Fi fans' dream!

T:TSC had great premier ratings also and look where that is now. They were also in active development of the series not "ON HOLD" like V is. By the time ABC gets the ball rolling on this, all the fanfare will die out and V will be another series left in the dust by the lack of intelligence of the Network executives and there 1950's approach to television.

I actually enjoyed it very much so I hope it sticks around, I'm just not going to hold my breath as I'm pretty jaded at the concept of SCIFI television making to the end of even a single season in this current network television environment

By SethSJ at 1:03 PM ON 11/04/09

Good shows like DEFYING GRAVITY, TTSC, and KINGS should be revived on SyFy if possible.

By Liam at 1:14 PM ON 11/04/09

Fodder for the masses.

By MSgt at 1:24 PM ON 11/04/09

So what? It's the week 2 and 3 numbers that count, much like for movies in theaters. Any show with potential can enjoy a massively successful premier.

I hope the show turns out well and continues to be a great success. I thought episode 1 was a bit rushed myself. It sacrificed substance in order to reach a certain point in the story by the end of the episode. I think the premier should have been 2 hours.

By McTex at 1:30 PM ON 11/04/09

I was really looking forward to this but boy was I bored. YAWNNNNNNNNN. I hope it gets better!

By r2d at 1:36 PM ON 11/04/09

I watched last night, and yes, I watched the original way back when it was on too. My main gripe with this story line was, and still seems to be, how fast they get into the rebellion issue. Good guys and bad guys dueling it out each week. Nothing thought provoking, or humorous. I gave up on the original show and don't see this one holding my attention very long unless they pull some radical story line changes.

By Jwb52z at 1:41 PM ON 11/04/09

For those who don't know, Defying Gravity cannot come back because the sets were destroyed. There is also already an interview online with the creators that tells what would have happened later. Consequently, there is no point to continuing it now.

By Sheep Farm at 2:00 PM ON 11/04/09

About 12 million saw the fourth episode of Logopolis in which Tom Baker concluded this time was the Doctor. A lot of people were sad to see him go.

By texasfan at 2:10 PM ON 11/04/09

I didnt like it at all. Wont watch it again.

By Jason Swartz at 2:16 PM ON 11/04/09

good show, no one on these sites likes anything i swear.

By jedimom at 2:17 PM ON 11/04/09

and yet they fired the Exec Producer! unreal!

By Boomer at 2:31 PM ON 11/04/09

Bring back FireFly.
this is why FOX and NBC cant make it.
they have stupid people running them.
Firefly was a GREAT show, and FOX threw them
for no reason. kind of like they threw out Futurama. they were kinda pissed when all for the firefly dvd's sold out, but they werent decent enough to get the series back. so FOX fired all of the idiots who chose to take these shows off. GOOD FOR YOU FOX!
and NBC doesnt know when to let shows die.
HEROES i getting old. i like it at the beginning, but now its like a zombie. is dead, but wont go down.

By Dragon at 2:35 PM ON 11/04/09

Storyline is current to what is in our world now, good storyline and acting, as well as appealing characters. This could rock if they don't f the whole thing up - IE..Lost, Heroes...etc...,

By loninappleton at 2:38 PM ON 11/04/09

I got this one out of the way in a hurry.
In under a minute they were on the cell phone. I turned it off at that point as is my custom for any program using this crutch as a writing element.

Good bye V.

By incredulous at 3:15 PM ON 11/04/09

holy crap! who actually thought the writing in this show wasn't anything but embarrassing??? is the general viewing public really that diluted from years of bad tv viewing? i honestly found myself looking at my bf and saying, "did he REALLY just say that?" and the looks that got tossed my way throughout this pilot from him- that look of, "OMG this is cheesy-bad-writing!"

talk about NO character development (who cared about these cookie-cutter characters???) and when the entire premise of humanity's sudden devotion to the visitors (i refuse to call them the lame "Vees") is based on a world gone wrong, with not a single back story showing us how desperate the world actually is is just really bad story telling! oh, wait! there is that really original single-mother-bad-son storyline! forgot about that gem!

i could go on with so many things that just went off the rails but i am flabbergasted that this passes for awesome epic tv!

even the mothership was overwhelmingly unimpressive!

wow... I've gotta get back to cable!

By superfly at 3:47 PM ON 11/04/09

@everyone Defying Gravity was racist. I'm so glad that one is gone. Virtuality was way better anyways.

Also, if V continues to demonize universal healthcare or encourages paranoid right wing extremists one more time I won't watch it.

By sigh at 3:59 PM ON 11/04/09

@ incredulous, think you could do better? Go on. Write a TV show. We're waiting to have our minds blown. First of all, tell us what your version of good writing is. I doubt we'll all agree. And, holy heck, it's the first episode. You can't expect the characters to be fully fleshed out, you idiot. Everyone starts out as a cookie-cutter. It takes time to actually bake the cookies into something that tastes good. I'm flabbergasted at your inanity. Go back to cable. Go away. Network doesn't need you.

@ loninappleton, since when is conversation a writing crutch? Who cares how it takes place? That's just moronic.

@ Boomer, SethSJ, Morg, this isn't about other canceled shows. Go whine somewhere else. Defying Gravity was NOT good. About 99.9% of people who watch TV will have no clue what you're talking about if you ask them about it. Firefly was awesome, but it's too late to bring it back. Get over it.

@ McTex and Texasfan, first of all, you're probably the same person. Who cares that you didn't like it? Troll somewhere else. Go away. Good riddance. Shoo. Git. Vamoose.

V was great. The pacing was good. I liked that it delivered a lot. It shows potential. It's different from everything else on TV right now. Seriously, how many crime/medical/reality crap shows are one right now? Hate, hate, hate! Let me have my sci-fi!!!!!!!!

@ superfly, universal health care IS demonic. And though it might have fed paranoid right wing extremists, it also fed smug, amoral left wing embraces of everything unholy

By Blix at 4:15 PM ON 11/04/09

The premiere actually exceeded my expectations (I was expecting a very watered down remake that ruined the spirit of the original). However, they threw in enough new elements to keep it interesting and didn't waste a lot of time with backstory (that most people know already). I thought the tone and pacing were just right and I'm looking forward to more episodes. Gotta love the “blind devotion”, “Universal Healthcare” and “don’t ask me any questions that paint me in a negative light” references.
I just hope ABC doesn't muck it up by making viewers wait 1/2 a year before showing more episodes thereby ruining the flow and momentum.

By Abe at 4:17 PM ON 11/04/09

I wanted to like it. But the combination of horrible acting, poor casting, and unbelievability sank it for me. And I love my sci fi. But this was poorly done, unfortunately. And I feel the huge initial draw will soon tank and the show will sputter.

By Mandy at 4:21 PM ON 11/04/09

I don't know. I'm still a little iffy about it. I'm a scifi purist. I'm always a little uncertain about remakes. I'll need a little time before I can really pass judgement.

By ed davis at 4:24 PM ON 11/04/09

why are people talking about unbelievability???

its a tv show not real life, i seriously doubt aliens will land in my life-time.

By gorehound696 at 4:50 PM ON 11/04/09

I am no longer interested in remakes/reboots.YAWN !!!
I will not be watching even one of these episodes.
Make us new scfi I will support it.

Amazing how much hype they give to REMAKES.

Very dissapointing. Another watered down network scifi show. Had great potential but it WILL fall flat quickly.

By RTKGuy at 7:00 PM ON 11/04/09

@ classy and sigh

Golly gee. I guess you guys told us. I guess I shouldn't say that the V premiere was rushed, cliched, and unsatisfying because you might disagree. I guess I should tuck my tail between my legs and run home because you two brought down the truth.

Amusing, and pathetic.

By snowtrooper1966 at 7:05 PM ON 11/04/09

For myself, I was entertained!
Having watched the original as a teen, the political social element was largely lost to me. I did, however, dig the cliffhangers and Sci-Fi elements. IIRC, the press was all over that show, and even reported some of the big surprises as news.

With the new series, if I had my way, they would have taken a bit more time with the story so that younger audience members that did not see the original mini could have appreciated the drama associated with the reveal that the aliens were in fact, reptilian.
I thought I may have been making a mistake last week having my family watch the original mini, as I did not want to ruin the "surprises", but it seems that was unjustified.
I am sure the writers struggled with this as well, and made the choice to pay homage to the mini, but make this new series have its own surprises.

I'm half surprised we did not see the hybrid baby in the pilot, just to get that out of the way as well;)

It will be nice for me, as well as a new generation to see this basic story played out with new characters, technology and twists.

The only part I did not like was that the visitors were referring to themselves as "V". If I remember, that was a derogatory name used by the resistance fighters.

Also, when (Di)Anna said "we are of peace", I half expected them to be revealed as Borg! Now that would have been a big surprise!

For me, I am just going to suspend my disbelief, try not to get caught up in the past, and enjoy the show as the escapist fantasy I believe it to be.
Best,
snowtrooper1966

By OrchidStation at 7:17 PM ON 11/04/09

SciFi on one of the "major networks". That should be enough.

Wash, Inara, Lizard people, and spaceships with killer f/x. Not happy?

Its debut scored almost 14 million people and is being compared to the horribly unpopular Lost. Still complaining?

As a determined alien once said to the earthman Arthur Dent, "your a jerk Arthur Dent". Watch it & like it. Take the bone ABC is giving you and walk the f away quietly. Trek hit big over the summer, we also got Moon. Lost wast a hit, FlashForward and V are results of it. I'll support any Scifi because if it makes money it will be duplicated, copied, butchered, re-imagined, and reinvigorated. At the end of the day the more SciFi content, the better.

@mac90000 I'd love to see a Sliders remake but then the Sliders fanboys will get mad and the Stargate fangirls who haven't seen Sliders will cry rip-off...giving way to total global nerd war.

By 3456 at 7:22 PM ON 11/04/09

Long live V. I will take even a remake of V.

@OrchidStation

"and the Stargate fangirls who haven't seen Sliders will cry rip-off...giving way to total global nerd war."

@classy and @sigh

You two get over it. Its BBoard. People post their comments, questions, whatever. If you don't like what people got to say then you got every right to say what you want. It doesnt matter what you say or what they say or what I say. Its just a freakin BBoard. Nobody's thoughts or opinions hold any real value, or will make a difference.
Realistically speaking, it was the premier episode. There have been a multitude of scifi shows that premiered great only to gradually and eventually fizzle out.
I aknowledge V success, and should it continue, then great, and if not then whatever. Im not interested in watching it either way.
And since you love nerd bashing, and anything said on here really doesnt hold any value, then I'll say this just for sh*ts and giggles. It's attitudes like yours Classy and Sigh that make me think about school massacres, attitudes like that you bring it on yourselves.

By Nancy at 9:41 PM ON 11/04/09

I thoroughly enjoyed the premiere of V. I did watch the original series in the "80's, but I enjoyed the 2009 series much better. It was much more polished and the acting was better. I noticed that Laura Vandervoot from Smallville is in the cast. Actually, she was the only cast member I recognized. I personally hope V continues to have high ratings. Sci Fi movies are the best shows are on TV.

By Tom710 at 10:59 PM ON 11/04/09

I actually enjoyed it. I'll give it a few episodes. MY only 2 complaints are:
1: This is such a technologically advanced species that they turn the bottom of their mothership into a big video monitor. That was funny.
2: Calling them Vs? I know it's been discussed in previous posts, but god... to actually hear it......*rolls eyes*

By Fedaykin at 1:49 AM ON 11/05/09

Happy to hear the ratings were good - this show might get the time and attention it needs to flourish.

But seriously guys, Defying Gravity was awful. I mean twelve shades of awful.

By hmmmmm at 2:32 AM ON 11/05/09

Frak, compared to the atrocity that was Flash Forward's first episode, V rocked the house.

By Arewyn at 11:43 AM ON 11/05/09

DG was actually a great show that the exec killed because it was not flashy enough.

There is a misconception that Sci Fi shows have to be all shiny and flashy with explosions and great special effects like the new version of BSG and honestly that show went the way of the Dodo after the second season. Now some of the best sci fi shows had very little to no special effects. They did this cause of the story they were trying to tell.

This version of V was a disaster IMO. While it was an hour long show after watching it I felt that only 15mins had passed. The story was rushed, there was no character developement and some if not all the story lines were contrived.

Will I watch it? Maybe, but more than likely it will sit on my media pc and just watse away till it is overwritten.

By SciFiLover at 12:37 PM ON 11/05/09

Totally agree with Arewyn

If the first episode was anything to go by, this incarnation of V is going to be nothing short of lame.

I really liked the original, and this is nothing like it, nor is it an even slightly worthy ‘reimagining’ as was BSG. I found the initial episode rushed, trying to cram the whole driving force of the original miniseries into 1 45 min story.

I know the original had longer episodes, but this was way too fast, going from arrival to resistance in 1 shot..

There was no time to get used to any of the characters before it is revealed that 2 of them are lizardy aliens.. Big deal, so what? They should have used the first few episodes to build up some kind of viewer tension, hinted at the aliens maybe being bad, then gradually revealing more of the insidious plot.

As it is, when the episode finished, I had no “yay, go resistance” feelings, just complete apathy..

As for the “V’s” references, oh god... If anyone had watched the original, V wasn’t a cute nickname for Visitors, it was for Victory..

By scifi fan at 1:58 PM ON 11/05/09

Thanks to Syfy, I watched the original and several episodes of the later series over the weekend so my mind was full of "V" when the new version came on. I agree a two hour premier might have been better for those not familiar with the original as I was.

I posted a rant on the state of Science Fiction viewers and all the hate and disagreements that are posted on forums commenting on TV shows. I mentioned Fringe's lower ratings and danger of being cancelled, as well as a prediction the new "V" would be a ratings disappointment for ABC. I stand corrected because nearly 16 million viewers has to be something other than disappointing. I do believe the audience included a more mainstream group than just Science Fiction fans. Like Star Wars likely many non-SCIFI fans would just say it is an interesting program and that they did not tune in because they are scifi fans.

Anyway, I hope they can keep the show going and can in fact help add new viewers to be included with those of us that follow Scifi as a favorite genre. If the show succeeds maybe NBC and Syfy will be more likely to add GOOD new Science Fiction shows to their schedules. It is a shame NBC is not behind “V” so reruns could populate Syfy during the week day marathons, it might have helped “V” succeed?

By scifi fan at 4:47 PM ON 11/05/09

Arewyn

DG only got maybe 4 million folks to watch the show, so ABC did not finish showing all the episodes.

How much better would it have been if NBC had put on DG or even just put it on Syfy to start with instead of ABC just showing part of it. I will have to admit I found the show rather slow in developing itself as far as my viewing is concerned, but I did watch every episode ABC aired. The 4 million would have been better than any of the StarGate franchise shows or Battlestar Galatica for that matter and Syfy seemed to do ok with those shows. The sad likelihood is Syfy will continue to find programing other than science fiction to populate their entire schedule but not for awhile .

By jerfob at 1:42 PM ON 11/06/09

My god, what a pile of sh*te, did they even watch the original? Bad effects, the usual stereotypical characters and no soul what-so-ever. Could they not have made a follow up to the original? Like maybe the signal the resistance sent into space for help in the first series gets answered or something. I'm am so bored of seeing the same actors appearing in sci fi stuff these days, can't we get rid of these 'beutiful people' and get some unknowns into the mix. You'd save a ton of money too. Will not be watching the rest of this drivel and I am begining to think I'll give tv sci fi a miss all together as it seems to be all about pandering to the retarded masses with big shiney effects and lame stories. It seems to be only the British who can produce thinking mans sci fi these days.

By DG2SLOW at 10:58 AM ON 11/07/09

Liked the premiere of V. Would have liked to see a 2 hour opener but it left me looking forward to the next episode. Much more entertaining than Defying Anatomy...I mean Grey's Gravity....I mean YAWN!

By cylon_conspiracy at 9:37 PM ON 11/07/09

I watched just because I felt as a fan of V I deserved to give it a fair chance, I was not expecting it to be good either. I didn't know they were going to reveal the "secrets" so early on, I actually thought they would be milking that and much later there would be a big discovery that they were reptilian. So, I was surprised, and a lot of the twists I did not see coming. Wasn't expecting to see a Visitor traitor so early on (the part Robert Englund played in the original) and I also wasn't expecting how much they would honor the original characters. Yes, it's a much different take on the show but it is very aware of the original, and all the elements and characters and themes are represented in one way or another, so that shows the original is being treated with the proper respect.

Bottom line, I was just curious to see how it would be, now I'm actually excited to have a show I'm looking forward to watching every week. And I think it would be very wise for them to get some episodes on-air way before the expected March debut of the "series proper".

By jerrilynn at 2:56 PM ON 11/08/09

Wasn't there another show about aliens in the early eighties? I thought it was also called v. May have been '79. I was 10 or 11 and don't remember for sure. Please let me know the name of this night time series from the 80's.

By Gilveron at 1:21 AM ON 11/09/09

@jerrilynn: The current series V is a remake of the 80s series/miniseries. The first miniseries, called V, aired in 1983. The second miniseries, V: The Final Battle, aired in 1984. The weekly series of V lasted only one season and ran in 1985. All were produced by Warner Bros. Television and aired on NBC.

By docwho2100 at 7:43 AM ON 11/09/09

there's always a way to bring a show back (regarding the comments about defying gravity) - I can point to many shows that have "come back" and in many different forms. Perhaps doing a miniseries, like the original V would be better suited for many science fiction ideas... then at least you have complete arcs and some sense of closure - and there would be a big point in bringing DG back - the creator saying in one paragraph per idea what would have been done and seeing it on the Big screen is very different.
