V lives: Ratings halt their decline for midseason finale

\<i\>V\<\/i\> lives: Ratings halt their decline for midseason finale

Like an alien spaceship slowing for a landing, the ratings for ABC's V slowed their weeks-long decline last night for the show's fall finale, leaving a bit of hope for the show's fans that the alien-invasion saga would continue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed blog, the audience for the fourth and final installment of the year drew 9.2 million viewers and a 3.1 rating, matching last week.

This signal of potential stability—and the fact "V" is halting above the 3.0 watermark—makes it very likely that ABC will bring back the alien invasion drama in the spring. In fact, the network ran a promo at the end of the episode saying "V" will return in March, even as ABC's publicity department continues to say that no decision has been made.

Last week, we speculated that the show would not be back if the ratings continued to plunge. We're going to go out on a limb again and suggest that ABC will take a look at DVR viewing, which tends to bump up the numbers of sci-fi shows, and decide then whether it's worth bringing the show back.

V helped ABC edge out CBS for the win among the adult demographic, with CBS topping the night among total viewers.

If the show wasn't so damn boring maybe the ratings would not be going down like parris hilton on a date!

By Dennis at 1:27 PM ON 11/25/09

muadib please explain to me how that comment made sense in your head?

By lastmass at 1:39 PM ON 11/25/09

The show sucks and should be canceled. its one of the slowest most uninteresting things to happen in scifi in years. i stopped even having my DVR record it incase it helped the numbers.

By greyfish at 1:50 PM ON 11/25/09

This may look good, but doesn't have the story impact of the original series.

By Richpit at 1:56 PM ON 11/25/09

It's not a bad show and it definitely isn't "slow". Hell, they jumped into things in the first episode that I figured it would take 3 to show.

It deserves a chance.

By tc at 2:21 PM ON 11/25/09

the show is boring as hell. and the over acting does not help.
@Dennis
Google paris hilton sex tape and that comment makes a lot o sense

By Regrix at 3:12 PM ON 11/25/09

The show is still finding it's legs to be sure, I'm sure many are still waiting for the old characters to show up, which hopefully WON'T happen. It's got a lot of potential though and I'm looking forward to seeing more..

And Lastmass... my friend, I still think you've no taste in television shows. :-) Nothing personal J.

By ATK at 3:13 PM ON 11/25/09

I like V, I am also a fan of the original miniseries. But I agree with most of the postings above and with what all of my friends are saying, it is moving very slow and something needs to happen. I understand the desire to make this series work but their is a reason the original was a mini series and when it moved to series format it didn't work. I think the writers and producers needs to take a queue from Lost and create a finite beginning, middle and end to the story. I'm sure ABC would love for the show to run 7 or eight years but they are losing many people because they want to see where the series is going and not deal with stand alone episodes and throw away story arcs.
However, for those who did not follow the news about the series prior to its release, please note that quite a few changes occurred behind the scenes shortly after the series began and many of our complaints and issues may have already been addressed. I will keep watching to find out. I only hope the rest of the world will be patient and give the show a chance again when it returns.

By FilmNut at 3:51 PM ON 11/25/09

Wow. How short are people's attention spans? How many episodes have aired? Isn't like 4? 4 episodes and people are saying it's boring and should be canceled? The show has barely started! What do people want, the opening credits followed by a cliff notes explanation? Have we all become the kind who buys a book and skips to the end to find out what happens because we don't want to invest ourselves the time to take in the story? Like any narrative driven show, you have to establish characters, plot, sub-plot, character arcs, plot twists, I can go on, you need to give the show sometime to set things up, 4 episodes isn't enough. That said; I'm sold on the story thus far. Keep it coming; I want to see where it goes. I'll give this show the benefit of the doubt.

By gorehound696 at 4:31 PM ON 11/25/09

and i never even watched one episode but i have watched the original mini-series more than once and there is a reason for that.
the reason being that when it comes to my scifi I want new shows not remakes/reboots.
i am personally boycotting any and all remakes/reboots.
I do watch SGU,Fringe,Supernatural,etc......all shows that are not remakes/reboots.
sorry if you liked the show but i really hate all these hollywood remakes.

By Tarc at 5:17 PM ON 11/25/09

If you tell people - up front no less - that they will only be showing four episodes, then more in the spring, you have to know that's a mating call for the DVR. There are probably hundred of thousands of DVRs chock full of four epsiodes of the new V - all waiting for the TV dead zone of the holidays. Why watch now when you can watch them all in a row, where there is nothing else to watch? ABC all but told you to do so.

By Omen at 5:31 PM ON 11/25/09

I'm enjoying the series & want to see where it goes in comparison to the original.
However I don't think it can play out over several seasons.
I think 2 should be enough.

By scifire at 5:39 PM ON 11/25/09

Bring back Defying Gravity!

By mykl at 5:46 PM ON 11/25/09

They (ABC) should bring it back and take this time to get the writers and such all on the same page and pace this damn show out more. It needs to be more intense and more dramatic with the twists.
I like it and hope it comes back, I just want more WOW in the factor.

By MUADIB at 5:58 PM ON 11/25/09

MAYBE IF YOU WERE NOT A VIRGIN DENNIS ,YOU MIGHT UNDERSTAND .

By actaully_V_stands_for_Victory! at 6:38 PM ON 11/25/09

I'm with the majority here. in a word, this show simply is boring.

shall i add to that really uncomfortably BAD writing and acting and characters who, 4 episodes in have not in the slightest bit interested me! fbi agent- boring, mother/son- who cares, alien rebel- whatever, hot alien chic- who? alien queen- gorgeous but... but... but... man, all I can think about are the tightly and complex characters of the original and I literally have to roll my eyes out of frustration!

with every week comes another huge groan... now it's this ridiculous bliss thing? oh man, it's just sooooooooo unbelievably NOT well thought out!

can i at least expect good effects please? those scenes of the inside of the ship this week were atrocious! how obvious can the cg possibly get?

all i can say is that last shot was interesting although again, i've seen this kind of cliffhanger SOOO MANY TIMES...

there is zero suspense and just about every plot turn could be seen coming a mile off!

oh man, there are just so many details that miss the mark, pacing that jolts and starts and scripts that seem to have in no way been improved since ABC forced them to rewrite (god, I can only imagine how bad they were before the rewrites!!!)

so dennis (and others), perhaps those are but a few reasons this show is just plain boring!

sorry, but i really do demand intelligent writing, plotting and just a tad of suspense from a series that pretends to be epic in scale (sorry but again, has the whole world been visited or just about 10 people? because that's about the scope this "epic" tale reaches for!!!)

By Dragonegg at 7:40 PM ON 11/25/09

I see a lot of complaints about how boring V is.
If the show is so boring, why are you still watching it?
I think humans are the source of the Bliss and that is why the Vs are coming.
Reminds me of the Torchwood mini series.

By TVObsessed at 10:53 PM ON 11/25/09

Lol, Scifi Wire is run by a bunch of morons that have no clue how to look at ratings. They probably think Heroes is doing better than Grey's Anatomy.

By theshadowboxer at 12:26 AM ON 11/26/09

This is good news. I've gone back to watch the episodes and I really am growing to like this show. I hope ABC will wise up and get this show back in production.

By cylon_conspiracy at 1:36 AM ON 11/26/09

Actually, if syfy is so against "V" I wouldn't be surprised that some of these negative comments are a different kind of V.

By Occasional at 1:47 AM ON 11/26/09

This show has a lot of potential. Too bad we live in a society where you lose interest in about 4 episodes and demand an explosion (hey, you got one) every other scene. I do think they are ratcheting up the action and confrontation, but the first couple episodes were the character build up.

Jericho was the last Network television series I tried to follow. Look what happened to that one, and it was quality writing. If you want to watch a million CIS, Law and Order, and reality DanceIdol shows, be my guest.

By diesel at 9:58 AM ON 11/26/09

V is Great show.
1 Great casting
2 Good storyline
3 Good pacing
4 It has action
5 Good character development
6 Good film quality
7 Good display of tech
8 Keeps you intested in seeing future episodes
9. Eye candy for both men and women

It's a good show so stop complaining.

Compare it to Stargate Universe which has none of the 9 points above and V is spectacular. V only had 4 episodes and viewers are already interested in the characters. Stargate Universe had more than double the episodes and the only character that is interesting is Eli.

Sometimes I think readers on this site just want to complain about everything. Give the good shows like V a chance.

By sonicRush at 11:50 AM ON 11/26/09

I have to say the show is following the original series pretty dead on, with a few modern advancements. Unfortunately this show is trying to hit way too many demographics to keep it's ratings up. ie:

1) 1st Generation V viewers
2) Teenagers (who feel their parents don't understand)
3) Women (Drama)
4) Men (Action & Scifi)
5) Black (Protagonist V character)
6) Women (Protagonist Main female character)
7) Men again (Hot Female villian)
8) Conspiracy junkies
9) End of the world junkies (2012)
10) and many many more.

The problem is very few Primetime networks have been able to successfully pull it off like X-files, Fringe, 24, Lost, & Alias.

Instead of trying to grab all the demographics in 1 shot and then subsequently alienating them one by one by not giving them enough what what they want, they need to pick a few, drop the rest and give those viewers exactly what they desire. Otherwise put this show on cable, where it will build strong ratings. Honestly, I think an hour on CNN might do CNN some good. LOL

Because at this rate I think we're destined to see one hit wonders in terms of Sci-Fi that last a few episodes before they are canceled.

Those are my comments.

By krista at 1:31 PM ON 11/26/09

Bring back Diana!
The pace is a bit slow, I have to admit. They should show more alien weirdness. And how come no one asks them about they homeplanet? that is the first question in reality everybody would want to know. Even that dark skinned alien fighting with the resistance -none of the humans seem to ask him questions. That is not realistic behaviour.
I hope they amp up the pacing and the writing. I am still keeping up hope for the show.

By guarddog8471 at 9:58 AM ON 11/27/09

I do agree that the show is moving a little slow. However, so did the original mini-series back in 1983. I also believe they are doing the right thing. They give you so much, and then pull back. They make you wanting more, which in turn makes you come back next week to see what happens. I loved the original. I also have to say that I am loving this version as well. Making us wait until March is kinda ridiculous, though. That is what doomed TSCC, and makes you lose interest in a show. Don't make the same mistakes that FOX makes, ABC!

By js27 at 5:00 PM ON 11/27/09

I do not understand how any of you can say V is boring. All you have to do is compare it to Stargate Universe (awful show, and slower than a snail), and V looks great. Plus it was pretty good for four episodes

By jeremykb at 5:26 PM ON 11/27/09

Please cancel this show!

It is just awful to watch - it is so ugly and cheap looking - and the dialogue is terrible - and the story is only slightly interesting. Put it out of it's misery and try something else. Maybe even something new?

By epic at 7:03 PM ON 11/27/09

In comparison to sloooow SGU, new "V"isitors is just "I'm having such a goood time, I'm the rocket ship in my way to Mars. Don't stop me NOW!".

New showrunner really might fix those little crapps, which was in the first four episodes of "V: Part I".

By kernel_thai at 5:01 AM ON 11/28/09

Pacing. The show isnt slow at all. The pacing is very fast in fact. The reason it seems boring is their determination to retell large parts of the original series. It's boring because u know whats coming to a large extent. They need to jettison themes like hybrid babies and the Lisa-Ty relationship and write new strong eps that pertain to 2009. They need to flesh out the characters they have. They passionate writing that makes the viewers want to be part of the resistance.

By stevenodd at 1:00 AM ON 11/29/09

I was sure I heard Jamie Bamber was going to be in the cast. Had anyone else heard that?

By Bobanort at 5:46 AM ON 11/29/09

What they need to do is stop making all the production mistakes that are too easy to spot and make the show painful to watch. In the pilot before they arrive the priest greets roy, who is in a wheelchair, on the middle landing of the church steps. There is no wheelchair ramp there (I stopped the video and checked to be sure). How did the guy in a wheelchair who couldn't walk get his chair up there? There was a bag lady pushing a shopping cart with a hubcap on the side on the same landing later in the show!! All that for a pretty camera shot, but it's obvious there is no way for her to get the cart up there.

Secondly, NO parish would be able to afford having 2 priests with the turnout they described. In case you didn't know, the Catholic church has had a shortage of priests for years. The 2 churches in my city have to share 1 priest who is on the verge of burning out and having a breakdown.

If you're going to cheap out and use modern firearms for the show, when a character shoots a guy and a squib blows out his back at the camera . . . when you drag him by his feet on his back he should leave a trail of blood. It doesn't just run out of entry wounds.

For all the money put into the effects, the daytime shots of the mothership look "off". The lighting on the mothership is inconsistent with the actual camera footage of the city and even the shadow is misplaced. The mothership is right over the tops of the buildings, which will block some sun at dawn and dusk and thus the mothership will leave a shadow at those times even when the sun is low in the sky. At midday the sun is much higher in the sky and the shadow will move a bit, but it will be present and more pronounced. It just isn't there!! Even Babylon 5 years ago made attempts to cover that and they were on a shoestring budget and didn't have radiosity and caustics as rendering options in Lightwave 3d back then (look it up at newtek.com). My point here is that IF you're going to remake a show and reimagine it . . . try to get someone without ADHD to do it so that it makes sense. You're supposed to make it BETTER than the original, but truth be told the original series had fewer production mistakes in the entire first miniseries than the pilot episode of this new one.

Keep in mind this was all noticed in just the pilot episode, though I've watched them all. I'm not going to go into the weak writing and stuff that everyone else described above me since I pretty much agree with them 100%. I'd still watch the new show, but I'm not glued to the set like I was when the original series was first on television.

By kmin at 4:33 PM ON 11/29/09

Why is there such hate for SGU? I think it's the most intelligently written "Lost in Space" type show I've seen since Earth 2. Remember that one from around ten years past? I enjoy the characters and the pacing. I think the stones are a great little device. I know I'm in the minority, I just don't know why? I couldn't stand Atlantis in the end and SG1 became a watered down version of Farscape once O'neil left. Folks, give SGU a chance before you spew the hate.

By Leto_II at 6:11 PM ON 11/29/09

Watching this show is the same experience as having my nether regions gently massaged by a roaring, burning chainsaw.

By ctmm at 7:51 PM ON 11/29/09

V&sgu both stink........... can't hardly wait til something new is on

By John at 2:45 PM ON 11/30/09

The show is still taking shape, so it's not great. However, it's still better than Heroes, or any crap currently on Syfy.
