Frank Miller, creator of the comic on which Zack Snyder's insanely successful 300 was based, has told the L.A. Times that he's working on a follow-up to be titled Xerxes.
While the $450 million-grossing 300 depicted the Battle of Thermopylae, Miller says of Xerxes, which is set 10 years before 300, "It's the battle of Marathon through my lens." He goes on to say that "I've finished the plot and I'm getting started on the artwork."
Miller also indicated that Zack Snyder is interested in adapting Xerxes.
But can they pull it off? In the time since 300 came out, Miller made the really dreadful The Spirit and Snyder made Watchmen, which disappointed many. Can these two catch lightning in a bottle again, and inspire millions of guys to do lots of crunches so they get those rad Spartan abs?

I don't care if watchmen disappointed I loved it.

Watchmen didn't disappoint me and I have been a fan since the comics first came out.

"The Spirit" was hilarious if watched in the right light. How can you not think Samuel L. Jackson in a nazi uniform is funny?

Watchmen will get more popular as time goes on. It's a difficult film, a long sometimes boring always complicated multilayered, melancholy epic. I liked it overall but it's not a movie you can watch over and over again.

i like Watchmen. think it's a good movie. i never saw The Spirit. the movie trailer for it looks good. dunno if i should watch it or not. suggestions?

I find it interesting that Miller is perfectly happy to reduce his medium to quite literally nothing more than storyboarding for films.
That being said, 300 is my second favourite film, and I love the book. I'm looking forward to both the new book and the film - assuming Miller isn't directing.
They need Snyder. They NEED Snyder. He said when the 300 se/prequel news first broke over a year ago that he's interested in directing, but not until he sees a script. So he is open to the idea, which is good stuff.
They really need Snyder.
Also as a side note I think 300 died, not 299. I think there were 301 guys. The film mentions 'Leonidas and his brave 300', as well as other similar lines. Surely that would mean there are 301 of them, including Leonidas. The 300 of the title would therefore refer to the 300 who died, not the 301 who fought.

People need to stop hating on the Watchmen movie. I really enjoyed it. I didn't like it as much as I did the comics, but I thought Snyder and Co. did a great job. I saw the movie with a group of 6 friends, including 1 woman, and we all loved it. If someone wants a slavishly perfect video adaptation of the comics, try to sit through the Watchmen Motion Comics.

in my opinion (and The Spirit aside), Frank Miller rarely disappoints. i can't wait to read this book. and while we're on the Frank Miller subject, DC really needs to get on the ball for "All Star Batman and Robin."

I'd like to see the Battle of Salamis which proceeded the Battle of Thermopylae.
By rj472 at 6:47 AM ON 12/16/09
All died in 300 except for Theron. he was the storyteller of the movie that Leonidas asked to return the necklace to his wife for him.
By juss at 8:12 AM ON 12/16/09
*I* liked Watchmen, the film, and I hated the comic. I didn't find the film difficult or particularly complex, at all, and I question the intelligence of those who do.
IronOre--No one is funny in a Nazi uniform, ever. Okay, okay, MAYBE Mel Brooks.... but he's the only one!
By Imagica at 8:21 AM ON 12/16/09
@juss
You have not seen Inglorious Basterds have you?
Hitler was hysterical same with many different Nazis in that film. As well as in some scenes Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa!!!
By Paul at 8:36 AM ON 12/16/09
Two things:
1. Frank Miller is vastly overrated. The SPIRIT sucked badly, and as for All Star Batman and Robin, the only notable thing about it was the curse issue which got pulped. Also his Daredevil was bad. Popular but bad.
2. Juss is right. Nazi uniforms are not funny.

Watchmen absolutely ruled. Mainstream audiences missed out on it because it was a complex narrative and a cerebral film - just like it was as a comic. The Spirit, though...honestly, the only good thing about that movie was Scarlett's lean-over during the scene where Sam is going on about his damn wierd hopping friend. The rest of the movie boiled up from an unplugged septic tank.

I never read any of the Watchmen books. I have seen the movie and cannot help but be impressed. I have seen 300 and I am amazed. Frank Miller is a great writer, but after the Spirit, he should go with his strong suits. Directing is not one of them

Jss and Pul need to desensitize. Te artocities that nazis committed are not funny, the uniforms can be. Uing a nazi uniform in a racist or supremicist way is inapproriate, using it as a humorous prop is fine, just ask Mel Brooks, a Jew, who was fine with it. It's all about context.
By Paul at 9:21 AM ON 12/16/09
Uh, action jim, if Nazi uniforms can be funny, why are they ILLEGAL in Germany? Mein Kampf is a riot too.
Try UNdesensitizing.

This is a terrible idea.
Frank Miller, what the hell happened to you?
I can't believe that the guy that gave us The Dark Knight Returns and Daredevil: Born Again has become such a caricature of himself.
He's fallen so low on the creative level that he's writing a sequel/prequel to 300? The original comic was average fare, at best. Other than the page format, there is nothing unique or even remotely intriguing about the original comic. It made for a greatly entertaining movie but the comic itself was so-so.
Miller used to be better than The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Batman and Robin All Stars, Sin City and so much of what he's done in the last 10-15 years.
Now he's writing follow ups no one asked for. Well, at least the expectations will be low this time around. With DK2, he shot for the moon and barely hit the puddle in the front yard.

Zack Snyder did a GREAT job Directing WATCHMEN!! The only problem I had was that it was too much information in too little of a time period. He should have made 2 films. He should be considered for Directing Frank Herbert's "DUNE" now that Peter Berg's lost the job. He would hopefully stay true to Frank Herbert's vision, and make 2 or 3 films out of the first book, not smashing it all in.

Paul, claiming German de-Nazification laws have something to do with whether Nazi uniforms can be used comedically doesn't fly.
Have you seen The Producers? The movie's been around over 40 years and is considered a classic film by many today (spawning a successful recent Broadway adaptation, and a not so successful Hollywood adapatation of that).
The use of Nazi imagery in comedy is a matter of aesthetic debate and taste. That said, people who make bold, absolutist statements, such as yourself, and cite laws whose purpose they don't fully understand, as you have, tend to not know what they're talking about in regards to the discussion at hand either.
Battle of Marathon would just be a bigger 300, I guess. I suppose people would see an exponential expression of the "same story" (bunch of ancient warriors rendered with great creative license engage in combat).
Good point, asfm, about not Miller reducing the comic book/graphic novel to simple storyboarding.
Watchmen was an ok movie. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't all that great either.
By John at 2:21 PM ON 12/16/09
Does Miller realize that Darius was the Persian emperor when Marathon took place, and he wasn't at the battle?
By RMS at 2:34 PM ON 12/16/09
The Watchmen was anti-Regan, anti-American, boring tripe. The Dark Knight was just as anti-Regan and anti-American as the Watchmen, but cool as hell. The Dark Knight Returns...SUCKED.
By M at 5:41 PM ON 12/16/09
Enjoyed both Watchmen and The Spirit. 300 was fun to watch but really, it was kind of ridiculous.... I mean seriously.... Come on.
Found the comments above about anti-regan, anti-american very funny. Did someones holy empire get dissed, and their senile-madman emperor? Too funny.

the spirit is in its own vein comedy, ive never seen the comic itself so i cant ompare. that said if u went to it out of the blue and not knowing anything u might enjoy it for its off the wall humor. its not for everyone. if the package appeals to you, then likely the movie will. in that mood watchmen is a different aspect. at its base is what we see a super heroes movie. and thats where it ends from first glance. the plot is a mystery at heart. who is killing the super heroes and why? the 2 flicks diverge one thin of plot the other had depth to it. the watchman movie was very good it contained many of the elements that the comic had except for the different ending. i had often wondered over the years how it would look after some director got his hands on it. i felt it was a well done job. but you got to realize whether you love the original or not a majority of the work that goes to the screen from other sources never meet up to our expectations or what we believe to be holy writ. please if you dont like it then vote with your dollar. that seems to be what hollywood or other media producers seem to understand.
