Make it Sir: Star Trek's Patrick Stewart to be knighted

Make it Sir: \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\>\'s Patrick Stewart to be knighted

Patrick Stewart—Star Trek's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Charles Xavier—will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror.

In addition to appearing in films, Stewart has been spending much of the last decade performing on the British stage. He is to be knighted by the queen on this year's New Year's Honours list. (The news isn't official yet; the newspaper bases its report on anonymous sources.)

Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

If he is knighted, Stewart will join fellow X-Men star Ian McKellen.

Ironic, considering he played an knight in Excalibur.

By DarkSoul at 12:51 PM ON 12/19/09

Ironic, how? Alanis, is that you? ;)

Hope this is true but it being a report from The Mirror "newspaper" means that I'll have to wait until a more trustworthy news source reports it before I take it as fact.

I couldn't be more excited about this honor (or honour, as the case may be). I can't think of any actor more deserving. However, I do have a question: where is that picture from? It shows a much older Patrick Stewart wearing a 2360s uniform, but wearing a 2370s combadge on top of it. WTF?

By bignutball at 1:00 PM ON 12/19/09

Who really cares where the picture is from. If you are smart enough to identify the "blip" you should know the episode.

By KnitChick at 1:13 PM ON 12/19/09

@Antodav -- I believe that would be from the finale episode "All Good Things..." when Picard was bouncing around in time.

I do like hearing this news, I hope it is true because Patrick Stewart totally deserves it! He is an incredible actor and amazing in ANYTHING he does!

By rotorhead65 at 1:19 PM ON 12/19/09

You guys don't recognize the uniforms from Star Trek: Generations? Don't start calling yourselves Trekkies just yet now...

By Colonel_Ez at 1:26 PM ON 12/19/09

The real clue as to where the image is from is the lighting, its from Generations, no TNG episodes had the Enterprise bridge lit that way

By thedoc at 1:28 PM ON 12/19/09

Totally deserved and quite frankly about it! His work in the Royal Shakespeare is just stunning, alongside all his SciFi work.

@Antodav & @KnitChick The screenshot is actually from the film Star Trek Generations where Picard (and all the other characters) wanders around with that combo all the way through... There is a nice cross over to the new style uniforms throughout the film...

Wow, I really am a geek (and proud for the record)

By Natrino at 1:41 PM ON 12/19/09

@fury161 that's not ironic, it's coincidence

By FresnoTimeLord at 1:58 PM ON 12/19/09

It's about time!

Patrick Stewart is a Fantastic actor,

Why this hasn't happened yet is beyond me. If anyone has been more deserving of Knighthood, it's Patrick Stewart!

The only drawback of this is..This may make TREK Convention tickets Cost more..If he still does them!

By scap3goat at 2:30 PM ON 12/19/09

@FresnoTimeLord:

I doubt that any price change might be to blame on Stewart himself (if he thinks knighthood makes him that much more special all of a sudden, he doesn't deserve it, imho) and I do hope that he'd protest if he found out people try to make easy money with his name. He strikes me as the guy who keeps in mind that fans are people, too, and quickly realise when they're being led on.

By Paul at 2:52 PM ON 12/19/09

Wow, that is totally awesome! What a wonderful Christmas present, not just to PS but to all NextGen fans. I hope it is true.

By mgb at 3:39 PM ON 12/19/09

This honor is well deserved, and way past due in my opinion. Congratulations in advance (soon to be) Sir Stewart.

By hermy at 6:10 PM ON 12/19/09

I love patrick stewart.and think it's deserved.having said that.they do give alot of those out anymore.it's amost like a star on the walk of fame

By Unicorn at 8:12 PM ON 12/19/09

Alex, I will take Trek for $1,000

My answer - Star Trek: Generations

By Thunarr at 8:39 PM ON 12/19/09

Definitely richly deserved. Especially as he was born just down the road from where I live. He's a good old Mirfield lad, is Patrick!

By the way, mgb, that'll be Sir Patrick, not Sir Stewart.

By asfm at 8:03 AM ON 12/20/09

He has earned this a hundred times over, but if there's one particular thing he's earned it for, it has to be his bit on Extras.

Seriously.

By Captain Grumbles at 10:17 AM ON 12/20/09

Long overdue, the idea of Sir Patrick Stewart is just perfect.
Now... if only I could find an opportunity to see him on the stage.

By MCP-001 at 11:32 AM ON 12/20/09

I'm sorry, Unicorn.

But it must be phrased in the form of a question.

By RooksGambit at 12:03 PM ON 12/20/09

I was about to make a snarky comment about how it's, 'make it SO' not 'make it sir'.

oi I need more coffee.

Still good news, well deserved. I'm actually suprised it hadn't happened earlier given all his work.

By sgugeek at 2:38 PM ON 12/20/09

He's not just a TV actor remember: he was weaned on (and still wins at) stage performance. I suspect he has contributed more than enough to England's culture in that manner to earn Knighthood even without his work on Trek.

By Mandy at 6:27 PM ON 12/20/09

I love Patrick Stewart. I know it's a little obscure but my favourite role of his is Sir Simon de Canterville in the made for TV version of The Canterville ghost from the mid-nineties. He was so great in that. That was the best adaptation of that and it's one of my favourite Oscar Wilde stories.

By Fury161 at 10:21 PM ON 12/20/09

What a coincidence.

By hitchhiker at 8:47 AM ON 12/21/09

I Met Patrick at DragonCon last year and while I thanked him for his roles on Star Trek and X-Men I also told that I loved his work from stage and that he had the most wonderful voice for Shakespear and others types of roles. He bowed his head and seemed honored by my remarks. He is one of my favorite actors and richly desrves being honored with kighthood.

By jubalh at 9:27 PM ON 12/21/09

i agree with you Mandy, The Canterville Ghost was great and also his Scrooge in a Christmas Carol is one of my favorites.
This is a well deserved honor to a great actor.
