Is the upcoming fourth Spider-Man in trouble?
First, there was the negative reaction to rumors about the film's new villains (Vulture? Vulturess??).
Now comes a rumor that preproduction on the Sam Raimi movie has been suspended indefinitely, according to IESB.net:
Apparently, several department heads working on the SPIDER-M4N production were notified of the halt last Thursday. Spidey and friends have some issues that need to be dealt with before production can move forward once again. Oh, and the film is known as SPIDER-M4N within the production offices so take note!
The site says there were problems with an incomplete script because director Raimi and Sony Pictures can't agree on a villain for the film.
Raimi is pushing hard for the Vulture to be the big baddie, something he also pushed for in the third film to star alongside the Sandman but didn't get and we all know how that one turned out. ...On the flip side, who does the studio want to be the villain? Our source says they seem to only be interested in featuring which ever character is selling books right now but basically they have no idea, just not the Vulture.
SuperheroHype, meanwhile, citing its own anonymous "studio source," said the report is untrue and that the production is simply shutting down for the holidays.
Bad news in Spideyland! What do you think?

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
Wealth and fame, he's ignored,
Action is his reward.
To him,
Life is a great big bang-up.
Wherever there's a hang-up,
You'll find the Spiderman!

They should poll the fans. The studio execs need to stay out of the voting :P

Vulture is a bad idea. He's a mediocre villain from the start and there was never a vultress. He works fine as a villain of the week for an animated series but he's not a great memorable villain for Spiderman. The hobgoblin and the Green Goblin are Spider Man's most known rivals followed by Dr. Octopus and The Lizard.
My personal fave (though lesser known) is Michael Morbius. Who doesn't love a super hero vs. a classic style vampire? I have no intention of seeing it if the villain is Vulture. He's just a glorified incubus.

I always thought that The Vulture was the worst villian of all time, worse than Carnage even. Where is the Chameleon? Or that hunter guy? Dare I say, even the Kingpin? There is a host of of others that are way better than the lame Vulture.
By Justo at 3:30 PM ON 12/17/09
I want something that's more epic. Kinda bored with the same old "stop the baddie before he destroys the city" routine. And god help us if Mary Jane is kidnapped, again. God help us!
By Bluesman at 3:32 PM ON 12/17/09
What about The Lizard? I think he'd be great, but then the films have shied away from Peter Parker's science nerd life. That was always a big part of the comics I read from the time I was six years old.

Hopefully this will mean that the talentless hack Raimi will be removed from this franchise. He has made one mistake after another ever since he was first hired.
The first and largest mistake was giving the role of Peter Parker to Tobey Maguire. If you can't pull off sarcasm and humor then you should never be allowed to be the wall crawler. Now Raimi wants to make grandpa Vulture the villain and turn Felicia Hardy into the "Vultress" instead of Black Cat. He proved in the last movie that if he doesn't like a character he will totally ruin it just out of spite (Venom).
Please get this fool away from Spidey immediately and give someone with talent who actually cares about the character a shot. There is no reason that they can't do some sort of story that involves the Lizard and Kraven. Both are much cooler characters than the Vulture, and wouldn't involve totally destroying yet another great character (Black Cat).
Please Sony, Raimi's version of Spider-Man is the equivilant of Tim Burton's Batman. Please let someone with the abilities of Christopher Nolan do to Spider-Man do what he did to Batman. Just ask Warner Bros. if it was worth the investment.
By evenevan at 3:50 PM ON 12/17/09
I thought with the way that they kept bringing in Dr. Connors that Lizard was on deck for the next movie... guess not.
By Carpe at 3:55 PM ON 12/17/09
I don't think Sony will remove Raimi since each of his Spider-Man movies have made 800 million worldwide. They are not going to rock the boat unless he decides to leave and do something else.
By UnRiel at 3:55 PM ON 12/17/09
I think the only worthwhile villians left that can translate to the big screen are Kraven or Morlun. The Black Cat can be an unorthodox ally that starts as a villain as well. We need to get dark and serious to compete with Iron Man and the other forthcoming Avengers movies. The Dark Knight showed we can put superheroes in a realistic background and make them seem possible. Let's move away from the cartoons. Spidey can still be a wisecracker and overcome super-serious villains. Tone down the background characters and the Daily Bugle and focus on Spidey's heroism and fortitude.
Let's recast Peter too. Tobey has been found wanting.

I can agree that Spiderman has gone as far as it can in it's present form. The first one was a bit corny and hokey with Toby and his character's Aunt and Uncle. Even Mary Jane was coming across as a bit of a damaged and confused tease. It needs a reboot with an actor that can handle dishing out sarcasm (Ryan Reynolds would be one example; body, compassion, and wit). A rebooted Venom would be my choice as the possible first villain.
By Dave at 4:10 PM ON 12/17/09
I hope it is true at least for a while, I want Raimi to get busy on the World of Warcraft movie. Another Spiderman movie can wait, but I think these are just false rumors anyway, Spiderman has made to much money for Sony to halt anything with it.
By David K. M. Klaus at 4:31 PM ON 12/17/09
Let's face it: the Vulture is the bald-headed old coot screaming at kids to get off his lawn, but with wings added. It's one thing to put him in a comic book, it's another to show young Tobey Maguire punching on a bald-headed old coot actor. It just doesn't make the hero sympathetic, and he's a poor choice for a movie supervillain. This should have been obvious from the first, and that it wasn't shows a certain lack of thoughtfulness, as in "Are you crazy? We can't do that!"
By THANK YOU!!! at 4:37 PM ON 12/17/09
Truthfully I may have been a little "hard" on Sam. He's a cute little man that I've been crushing over since his early work. If my parents ever found out their 41yr old son loves another man, they might kick me out of the basement for good...
By asfm at 4:44 PM ON 12/17/09
If they were seriously going to call it SPIDER-M4N, I'm glad it's been cancelled.
But I don't think film sites should be reporting rumours. It's not news. It's made-up news. A lot of websites just make stuff up for the traffic. And then the whole internet, to keep up, relays this make-believe nonsense.
I don't like it. It's bad for the reader.
But I seriously doubt Spiey 4 will be cancelled. It might not hit the utterly ridiculous release date Sony set for it (they said THIS YEAR that they wanted it out in May 2010, before even having a script, I think?), but I don't see this being a definite cancellation. Superheroes won't be huge forever.
Assuming the rumour is even actually true.
By tb83 at 4:49 PM ON 12/17/09
have to admit if this movie does not get made i will not be mad at all. if sam wants to ruin the movie more by putting this pathatic villiain in then let him but i will prob. not go see this one just cause how bad he did with the 3rd movie. i mean come on to find out he wanted to have Vulture over prob. one of the best villian ever
By Dr. Malcolm Long at 4:54 PM ON 12/17/09
I like Bluesman's point, maybe they could have Peter re-commit to science, and shy away from super-heroics. I remember as well that was a big point in the PPSSM series, and that ties in nicely with Dr. Connors and the Lizard.
By islesfan at 5:02 PM ON 12/17/09
This can only be good news. Spidy 1 was great and Spidy 2 was even better. Spidy 3 jumped the shark in a big way. What a major let down. Perhaps it would be best to let it go for a decade and try again with a whole new group of people.
By rofl at 5:02 PM ON 12/17/09
you have to be such a loser to waste life on WoW and an even bigger loser to go see a movie about it.
By Bluesman at 5:04 PM ON 12/17/09
Thanks, Doc! There was a long period in the 60's and a good deal of the 70's where he was a High School/College student trying to deal with the whole superhero thing AND being a normal guy. That's when he got to know the Pre-Lizard Dr. Connors.
By lordbrokenhalo at 5:17 PM ON 12/17/09
mysterio!! i've always wanted to see how they'd deal with this villain on the silver screen. i agree with the subject matter, though. the movie should a bit darker, with not so much focus on the bugle and mj.
By oddball at 5:23 PM ON 12/17/09
Sam Raimi needs to grow a pair of balls and tell Sony to back the f-off.
They hired him to do the job they need to take a step back and let the man work or get someone else.
But on the other side Raimi needs to start work on warcraft. There's enough spidermans already and all they are doing is overdoing it.
Warcraft has the potiential to be a good war movie if done correctly. And if there's going to be lots of sword fights there must be blood.... There must be a rated R.
By 13th Cyon at 6:47 PM ON 12/17/09
Ok, when the hell will the damn writers, and studio heads learn, they need to quit killing off the bad guys at the end of the movie. They killed Gobby, they killed Hob-Gobby, and they killed Venom. They have killed off the top three villains that spidey has. Gee is it any wonder they can't decide on what the baddy is supposed to be here?
I say we fire all the Studio heads and put the fans in charge.
By Krazy Joe at 6:50 PM ON 12/17/09
I hope it's not shut down. That would suck. I was psyched to see the Vulture on the big screen. He's one of the best Spidey villians. And the studio should learn from Spider-Man 3 not to mess with Raimi's villain choice.
By splinter at 6:54 PM ON 12/17/09
I personally really like the Vulture (the idea of a cranky super-powered geriatric frightens me), although I would most prefer to see the Lizard have a turn. I will say the the female Vulture idea is a bad one. I would also be happy to see the Rhino or electro some day. I do like Mysterio (especially his costume design), but I just don't think he would work well in a movie.
By PALADIN at 7:18 PM ON 12/17/09
I would trust SUPERHEROHYPE ( which started out as SPIDERMANHYPE) to have the correct take.
As for The Villain Issue; There is nothing wrong with The Vulture as a focal villain, provided he is handled correctly--just as with any other Spider-Man Villain.
Some of y`all act like a ' Daredevil' movie was announced with DD going against STILT-MAN...
( Alas, Wibur...He`s had his Day.....)

Kraven hired to capture Spider-man by the Kingpin. Personally I'd like to see Carnage.
By Spiderm4n at 7:37 PM ON 12/17/09
How about the Sinister Six or the Hobgoblin
By newbloodforspidey at 8:08 PM ON 12/17/09
I agree Raimi needs to go. We need new talent for Spiderman. We all wanted the movies so bad that we settled for the wrong actor "Toby" and an inferior director in Raimi.
I agree in the comparison of Raimi's Spiderman to Burton's Batman. We know it can be done much better...see Nolan!

Let's go for the Rhino with a King Pin side story....done by someone elso of course.
By therhino at 9:40 PM ON 12/17/09
THE RHINO....!!!!!!
How could it be anyone else,,,?
By mmarus at 10:19 PM ON 12/17/09
It would be nice if they dropped Tobey... seriously.
Vulture, for crying out loud, just the thought is as bad, as them giving the Green Goblin a Ceramic/Plastic mask in the first movie (That was soooo weak, given the technology at their disposal... CGI anyone?).
In the series, the only villain that really did it for me was Doc Oc.... and only to a certain extent.
suggestions, for the next villain, yes, Rhino, would be cool...
Personally, I would like to see them stretch out the venom story and introduce, Carnage.... OOOOH YEAAAAAH!!!, however now that i think about, it, lets just save that story line for a darker director, cause Carnage in a PG-13 movie, is a contradiction in terms and would just ruin it for me....
By TheMoose at 12:02 AM ON 12/18/09
Rhino, Scorpion, Mysterio, Lizard, Kraven...classic Spider-man villains all. The Vulture isn't a bad choice, and Makovich would not be a bad person for the role.
By ziofizbane at 1:08 AM ON 12/18/09
How about Mysterio.......
Bear with me here, I know he's not the greatest character/vilian in the comics but he could be one helluva contender for the movie with his knack for special f/x and could really mess with spidey's head....
By Tarc at 1:15 AM ON 12/18/09
Good - if Raimi had chosen Vulture as the villain! How about two of Spiderman's greatest adversaries: Mysterio and Electro. One has brains, the other the raw power. Together or separately, they'd make a visually stunning movie.
By Goldilocks at 1:56 AM ON 12/18/09
This ain't the Geritol hour with Grandpa Munster wearing cockleburr shorts & a Tweety-bird costume! Forget Vulture, & Vulturess, too! Do The Lizard and Electro, for sure. And how about the Scorpion and Mysterio in the future?
By radiodaze at 9:24 AM ON 12/18/09
The Lizard and Kraven the Hunter! Doc Connors finally develops the lizard serum and goes scaly, bringing the great hunter Kraven to town to track him down. Spidey steps in to save the Doc and Kraven hunts him as well, sort of a "Most Dangerous Game" kinda vibe...
By virgil's diner at 10:00 AM ON 12/18/09
@radiodaze nailed it. I like that story. With the right actor, Kraven would be a blast. Lizard represents pure natural instinct, while Kraven is the epitome of celebrity-gone-bad. Spidey's trapped between both worlds - so he's almost fighting two extremes of himself. This could be a very tight story.
For pure power battles, Scorpion and Electro could be fun, but I'm not sure what kind of emotional arc you could build.
All that said, I see a lot of potential with the Vulture from a special effects point of view. Mid-air fight sequences between the Vulture and Spidey could be spectacular in Raimi's hands. And if they do get Malkovich for the role? Wow. Can't wait to see what Raimi does with this character.
By Taiso at 12:09 PM ON 12/18/09
The Rhino
The LIzard
Electro
Mysterio
Kraven
The Scorpion
The Vulture
The Man-Wolf
Any of these are fine with me. They're classic Spidey villains and are part of one of the best rogues' galleries in all of comics.
You Vulture haters that don't like him because old need to get over yourselves.
Villains I don't want to see:
Venom
Carnage
Kaine
Jackal
Anything else to do with spider clones
Spider Slayer
Green Goblin
Hobgoblin
I only say Green Goblin and Hobgoblin beacuse I think that particular story channel is dried up. They kind of ended it all in Spider Man 3.
Returning villains I wouldn't complain about at all:
Sandman
Doctor Octopus
What I don't understand is why the studio feels they need to say anything at all about who is going to be in the movie. The movies make money and Raimi understands Spider-man well enough that the movies are popular. Why does the studio even care?
It probably has to do with the fact that they don't think kids will want to buy a toy based on the Vulture if it's just some old dude. These days, these movies are all about the merchandising except in very rare cases like The Dark Knight.
I just want Spidey to be more...SPIDEY when he dons the mask. Cracking wise and insulting the bad guys and being a motormouth. This is not Maguire's fault as he doesn't write the scripts.
By w0lfm4n at 12:21 PM ON 12/18/09
First of all, I think the King Pin would be great, except that property is owned by Warner Brothers when they produced Dare Devil. It was agreed that Sony and WB would never cross over thier characters (my understanding).
I think Spidey vs generic animal based villain is a bit stinky. Doc Oc worked because of the caliber of acter portraying him. That's primarily why Spidey 3 failed. The wrong actor played Brock, and 2 95% CGI villains were just wrong.
Kraven the Hunter or Mysterio would be good. As for the story, I always liked Parker as an underdog pining for MJ. Now that he's got the girl that story line is a bit lame. Don't have him questioning his callng as a hero as it was done in Spidey 2.
Maybe kill off Mj or at least give Kristin Dunst a hamburger, if she gets any skinnier it'll be Spiderman vs Skeletor!
By Shaun at 2:52 PM ON 12/18/09
i like the idea of having the vulture as the primary villain, and black cat (not vulturess) as an uneasy ally. but there should also be room for the lizard. having the lizard would bring a bit of symmetry to all of the films as a whole.
By beggly at 4:28 PM ON 12/18/09
Personally, I'd love to see some classic spiderman baddies.
Why not do a montage of villains who are being controlled by a villain mastermind like Kingpin? Just because Kingpin was in the Daredevil movie doesn't mean he can't pull a Spiderman movie out of his hat.
Vulture, Rhino, Hammerhead, Scopion, Electro, Kraven the Hunter... none of these guys could really carry a movie all by themselves, but as a group, I think they could be awesome. Hell, have JJJ hire Kraven to stalk and bring in Spidey, if nothing else!
