Star Trek director J.J. Abrams has written a heartfelt tribute in Newsweek magazine to Randy Pausch, the computer-science professor who delivered the moving Last Lecture upon learning of his cancer diagnosis and who had a cameo in Abams' Trek, above.
Here's some of it:
We had fun on set, geeking out about his accomplishments. It was a heartbreaking notion that he might not live to see himself on screen [which he, in fact, did not]. But somehow, impossibly, in the face of such a grim diagnosis, Randy joked about wanting to be buried in his Starfleet uniform. Despite it all, he was radiant, kind, and good-humored.

The first thing I did after watching "The Last Lecture" was go online and order DVD copies for my brothers and their families. Truly an inspiring / uplifting story. Professor Pausch was a gifted man filled with grace.

What inspired me most about Pausch was what he said in an interview about whether he felt it was "unfair" for him to be stricken with cancer. His response was that since cancer is going to strike some number of people, it wasn't "unfair" but merely "unlucky" that it hit him. I found his lack of feeling sorry for himself in the face of death itself to be very profound and inspiring.

He can be buried in that uniformif he wants, but it is no way any kind of Starfleet uniform.

It's things like this that make me proud to be a geek. We have such incredible people among us . They say the geeks 'shall inherit the earth'. If the inheritors are in any way like Mr. Pausch, then make it so.
