U.S. zombie fans to be denied Romero's latest?

U.S. zombie fans to be denied Romero\'s latest?

So, in a world in which Zombieland grosses $75 million in the U.S. alone and zombie-themed video games generate entire industries, when the animated Resident Evil: Degeneration gets a pretty healthy release on DVD and Blu-ray, why can't George Romero, the guy who created the apocalyptic flesh-eating zombie genre in 1968 with his Night of the Living Dead, not even get a DVD release in the U.S. for his latest zombie movie, Survival of the Dead?

According to Dread Central, a DVD release of Romero's Survival of the Dead is available for pre-order in the U.K., with a street date of March 15, 2010. This is a neck-chomping bummer for fans in the U.S. Given all the truly wretched, eye-meltingly bad movies that go right to DVD, isn't Romero worthy of at least that kind of release here on these shores?

As we reported in July, Survival of the Dead (which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival) concerns people who try to keep their recently deceased loved ones at home so they can lead some sort of normal "lives" until a cure for the zombie infection can be found. Given Romero's talent for social satire, this looks pretty tasty to us.

Given Romero's fan base, wouldn't even a no-frills DVD release of Survival of the Dead be worthwhile?

"Diary of the Dead" and "Land of the Dead" lost their shock value as a social commentary vehicle to me IMHO. And zombies have permeated our culture we're not shocked by the cannibalism of the undead. It's evolved to comedic satire really where the shock of people eating people isn't "new" but funny...? Romero needs to jump-start, so to speak, the genre. It did with 28 Days Later (I know, infected versus undead, yeah...). But this genre has played itself out. What happened to World War Z?

I loved Romero's earlier films, but Land of the Dead just plain stunk and I had no desire to see Survival when I read what it was about. The remake of Dawn of the Dead and even the 1991 remake of Night of the Living Dead, heck, even Night of the Living Dead 3D (with Sid Haig - Captain Spaulding for you Rob Zombie fans) was better than Land of the Dead!!

Gonna have to go with tb83 on this one. Gonna file it under "Shoulda stayed buried".

What!?
Considering all the zombie crap that's come out lately, this seems ridiculous.

Survival of the Dead sounds like it expands upon the ideas presented in the beginning of the original Dawn of the Dead, and I for one would love to see it!

He should try a pure first person zombie film. None of this Blair Witch camera nonsense, but a true, we-see-what-the-person-sees thing.

I think I'd find that very exciting, if done right. It would bring back the sense of danger that's been lacking in zombie films for a long time.

Zombies have been done to death …no pun intended.

Better to see a Bad zombie movie then all of the vampire related crap out there!!

By alphantrion at 7:01 AM ON 12/12/09

If I have to choose between a film like Twilight and a Romero flick I'll always choose the Romero flick.

See if you can tell that to a twi-hard.

Come on - of course Americans will have a chance to see it - they can just order it on dvd from Canada when it's out there.

...and it will probably also be out on American dvd too - no matter what they say.

I like zombie movies and have been a fan since the original 'Dawn' but 'Diary' stunk IMHO big time. I wasn't exactly crazy about 'Zombieland' either. I did like 'Land of the Dead' though...I guess I'm the only one. :)

I'm sure I'll see 'Survival of the Dead' when I get the chance, but honestly?...holy sh!t it looks bad!

shadow,

No, you totally intended that pun! :)

Survival of the Dead has an intriguing plot. I'd totally check it out.

Land of the Dead was about what I expected and entertaining enough. Plus, it had Simon Baker (who's great on The Mentalist) and Asia Argento (one of my favorite good "bad" actresses).

Diary of the Dead was an okay idea, dull movie, and was dragged down even more by two insipidly boring lead actors.

What part of "will be released in the UK" equals "Won't be released in the US"

I hate to say it but I really can't trust Sci Fi WiREfor stories about anything but SyFy channel info any longer... between this and the rash of terribly misleading headlines used lately they've lost all credibility...

By Dr.Wily at 1:20 PM ON 12/12/09

Romero's out of ideas, Diary of the Dead was essentially just another remake of Night of the Living Dead

By MCP-001 at 4:53 PM ON 12/12/09

I'm finding it hard to believe that George Romero cannot find someone to master and replicate DVD's in North America.

Like a company that's into "niche" titles like Anchor Bay isn't interested?

If that doesn't work, shoot me an e-mail, I can master it and burn it locally by March/April 2010.

By Sci-Fi-Fan at 12:05 AM ON 12/13/09

I love the Romero movies, but this sounds like a serious remake of Fido.

By JK at 2:51 PM ON 12/13/09

Sorry, but I just don't care... I love zombies as much as the next fan, but Romero is past his expiration date.

By w0lfm4n at 11:10 AM ON 12/14/09

Fido was great! Thats what I was thinking when I first read through this article. Romero is basically clinging to a genre that he helped bring to the mainstream, but he doesn't have any fresh ideas.

Sadly the Zombie genre is good for almost nothing but comedy anymore except for a few gimmicky mods, like quarantine, Planet Terror and 28 Days Later.

Zombies are too common, lets look at some of the monsters out there that haven't gotten much attention and make some good scares and social commentary using them.

I don't mind vampires as long as they are more of an adult fanfare, anything less than an R rating nowadays wouldn't be that great.

By wilcoy at 11:45 AM ON 12/14/09

Well if I have my choice between Romero's 'Survival Of The Dead' or "Twilight teen vampires' I'd stick with Romero...C'mon release the darn dvd in The States! ASAP!

By Taiso at 12:13 PM ON 12/14/09

All the hate for Romero and his later zombie movies in this thread is unwarranted.

Diary was a reiteration of Night because Romero wanted to portray the first few days of the outbreak in the modern era where information exchange is more prevalent. He did this because he wanted to see how today's society would respond to this kind of crisis and how we would percieve it in this era of modern media coverage and internet culture. That's exactly what he intended it to be and that's exactly what it is. Criticizing it for this is the height of moronism and shows a gross lack of refinement.

Land Of The Dead was an examination of how man's inherent flaws will cause him to be selfish and erect fragile empires even in thef face of a global crisis. Rather than do something good and useful with all of the resources these people have, they created a society of inequity and opportunism where the privileged lived well and the destitute continued to suffer. Even in a world where we all might get eaten, there are people that will try to profit. Not just survive, but establish commerce and economy and then try to gain from it. The movie showed how it might go down in a zombie apocalypse.

Romero has always examined the social condition through his zombie movies. This is his ouevre, and he is STILL the master and every zombie movie he's made is worthy of praise.

If you disagree, please kill yourself IMMEDIATELY. You are wasting oxygen.

Then come back as a zombie so I can blow your freakin' head off with my shotgun. This will give me the dual satisfaction of committing an act of violence upon you for which I will not be held accountable and also destroying that thick gray noodle in your skull that could only anatomically defined as a 'brain' through medical science. For you, sir/ma'am, your 'brain' is purely a vestigial organ.
