Time-travel movie next for Bowie's director son, Duncan Jones?

Time-travel movie next for Bowie\'s director son, Duncan Jones?

Fresh off his British Independent Film Award wins for Best Film and Best Debut Director this week for his low-budget mini-masterpiece Moon, Duncan Jones (formerly known as Zowie Bowie, son of rocker David Bowie) is gearing up to tackle the SF thriller Source Code. According to a Tweet from Production Weekly, Jones will start pre-production in a few weeks and will film this spring in Montreal.

Variety reports that Source Code is the story of a soldier who finds himself repeatedly placed in the body of another person just before the detonation of a bomb on a commuter train. Prince of Persia's Jake Gyllenhaal, currently starring in the drama Brothers with Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire, has been in negotiations to play the lead, replacing Topher Grace.

SF fans could say that this premise seems like a cocktail of Quantum Leap Groundhog's Day, and the time-travel show Seven Days. But if Jones showed such chops taking established SF tropes and making them seem fresh in Moon, do you think he can pull off the premise of Source Code?

I hope people stop labelling him as 'Bowie's son' some time pretty soon. 'Moon director' has so much more meaning. He's done more than enough to step out from under his father's shadow.

There have been a couple of really fantastic time travel films in the last few years (Primer, Timecrimes). It might be obviously riffing on Quantum Leap and Groundhog Day, but I have confidence in his ability to tell an original story.

I think it's pretty clear from Moon that we can't judge Jones' films by their basic concept.

I was kind of hoping Mute would be his next film, though. Duncan Jones writing a love letter to Blade Runner? Yes please.

Rian Johnson is also working on a cool-sounding time travel film, Looper. Seems like it's a hot topic right now.

2009 was a great year for real scifi.. Moon was great in it's story and style of decor, acting and general modesty. I can't wait for Duncan Jones' next movie! He proved with Moon that he's not just a naïve first time director trying scifi because it seems easy. Apart from that I dont think it;s bad to remember he's a Bowie. His father was great too.. so what.. The Jones's seem to be a great creative family.

This is good news. Jones is a great fresh director for the genre. I hope that he gets back to doing the Moon trilogy after this.

Does anyone know when Moon is coming out on DVD? Loved it in the theater.

tweekend,

Since you were able to post, uou clearly have access to the internet and yet you still had to ask that question? Maybe we're "tweeking" a bit too much this early into the weekend?

Regardless, Moon comes out January 12.

I agree - you have to stop referring to Duncan Jones as "Bowie's son" - he's earned what he's earned through hard work - not family lineage. You dishonor the man by such tactics.

Robert Llewellyn ("Red Dwarf") has a weekly web-interview program called CAR POOL and in one of the segments - he interviews Duncan Jones while - well - driving around, using bullet camera to record.
