New end of the world date found! You have until May 21, 2011

The new year is just beginning, but already at least one man says he's figured out when the world will end. Forget 2012: The real date is May 21, 2011.

That, anyway, is the conclusion of 88-year-old self-styled biblical scholar and civil engineer Harold Camping, according to the San Francisco Chronicle:

Camping, 88, has scrutinized the Bible for almost 70 years and says he has developed a mathematical system to interpret prophecies hidden within the Good Book. One night a few years ago, Camping, a civil engineer by trade, crunched the numbers and was stunned at what he'd found: The world will end May 21, 2011.

This is not the first time Camping has made a bold prediction about Judgment Day.

On Sept. 6, 1994, dozens of Camping's believers gathered inside Alameda's Veterans Memorial Building to await the return of Christ, an event Camping had promised for two years. Followers dressed children in their Sunday best and held Bibles open-faced toward heaven.

As you may have heard, the world did not end in 1994. But just in case he's right this time, we're liquidating all of our assets and going to Tahiti to wait it out.

Well, luckily we learned from Emmerich's film how to survive the apocalypse. Just stand somewhere that wouldn't be either thematically fitting or perfectly ironic for a huge crack to appear.

By the owlbear at 2:45 PM ON 01/04/10

Wow! I didn't know that anyone actually went to see 2012. But now at least I don't have to. Thanks Robert Ring! :)

By muadib at 3:04 PM ON 01/04/10

The world will end in May 21, 2011? Cool at least I can see the last Super Bowl!

By Poet at 5:07 PM ON 01/04/10

I hope we'll all be double-jointed
When the end of the world is neigh.
Then we can all bend over backwards
and kiss our ... selves ... goodbye.

By Falconer at 5:26 PM ON 01/04/10

It's pathetic that "believers" in a predicted date for the End of the World don't read the WHOLE Bible about what it says about the Last Days. Camping is a deluded fool, and so are his followers.

By green11420 at 6:11 PM ON 01/04/10

I hope he lives long enough to feel stupid... again.

By Jonas72 at 9:08 PM ON 01/04/10

Oh, yes! I was so depressed about the 2012 date, coz it meant I'd just get around to turn 40, and bang! The world would end! This way I'll be 39 forever! Go, Bible freak! Yay!

By BlakOpal at 10:08 PM ON 01/04/10

Speaking as a Christian, let me say this, not all of us follow idiots like this. Cuz unless I am wrong, I do believe Jesus said it best.....

No one knows the time or the day of the end save the Father. Not the Angels in heaven, not even the SON himself.

Yeah, so like, not even Jesus knows when he is coming back. I always pictured it in my head, that Jesus will be involved in a mean game of volleyball with the angels and God will come up to him and be like, "Hey! Time to go!", and Jesus will be like, "Now?? Come on! I'm winning here!" lol

The Bible says that only God knows when the end will come. If this guy were as much a Bible student as he claims, he would know that. Even the Joe-Average-Sunday-morning-only-casual-churchgoer should know THAT much.

Yes, the world will end someday, but I personally believe that, in order for God to be the only One who would know when, it's going to come on a date that NOBODY guesses. So you can pretty much rule out this guy's date, the entire year 2012, and any other date that anybody else tries to set. Now it could happen after those dates, or it could also happen BEFORE, so it would be wise to get ready by asking God to forgive you of your sins (everybody sins, people) and accepting Christ as Lord while you still have time.

By Nada Nuff at 9:51 AM ON 01/05/10

What an idiot. As someone else said, even people not familiar with the Bible knows there is no secret code or anything to determine when the end will come. "No one knows the day nor the hour."

At least it was somewhat funny, though. I got a great mental image of a bunch of idiots holding their Bibles to the heavens.

By numbr24601 at 10:14 AM ON 01/05/10

So if I believe the world will end tomorrow and my wife believes it will end the next day and my neighbor thinks it will end in 2 days, etc and everyone picks a different day, the world will never end?

By SciFiFan at 10:57 AM ON 01/05/10

What? I thought the world ended back on January 1 2000! How many times must the world end?

Dan 12:10 KJV - Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

2Pe 3:3 KJV - Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

It's the second prediction he's made and it's the second time he'll be wrong.. Religious zealots are funny sometimes.. you know, when they're not planning the destruction of all us infidels.

By Nada Nuff at 7:15 AM ON 01/06/10

@ landisbs :

Matt. 24:36-42--"“Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken along and the other be abandoned; two women will be grinding at the hand mill: one will be taken along and the other be abandoned. Keep on the watch, therefore, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know one thing, that if the householder had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have kept awake and not allowed his house to be broken into. On this account you too prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that you do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming."

By slowhand at 11:06 PM ON 01/06/10

Wow, you guy are slow. I have been listening to the humor of this guy for over a year now. He is a great relief from a hard day at work. Many times people stage call-ins to his show to confront him and they are dismissed with the same "and thank you for calling." It is really interesting to know also he's only predicted the end of the world would have happened on 2 other dates.

By rude at 12:20 AM ON 01/08/10

oh, its the end of the world as we know it but I fell fine.

1 thess. 5;2-6,read it carefully fools!!

By Robert at 7:27 PM ON 02/03/10

These verese are pretty clear;

(1Thessalonians 5:2-5) For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

(Revelation 3:3) Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

There are some that will know.
