Remember Daredevil, the 2003 film that put Ben Affleck in the scarlet suit in hopes of launching a franchise in the footsteps of the previous year's Spider-Man? That lackluster movie seemed to sink those hopes instead, but according to Nikki Finke over at deadline.com, Marvel's blind superhero will get a chance on the big screen again after all.
David Scarpa, who has already scripted one reboot—The Day the Earth Stood Still—will be writing the screenplay for the new Daredevil film, which will be released by New Regency and produced by former News Corp. president Peter Chernin.
Why is this all happening now? It all comes down to a case of—use it or lose it. Any Hollywood studios with Marvel superheros need to keep bringing those characters to the screen or else the rights will revert back to Disney-based Marvel.
So what do you think? Are you up for another Daredevil flick?
By Valar2000 at 9:16 PM ON 02/05/10
As long as Ben Affleck stays home, I'll watch it.
By splinter at 9:32 PM ON 02/05/10
Oh I want one. God yes. Just one with a good director and a good cast this time. I really loved the character as a kid, and really I would rather have Jackie Chan play Daredevil than Affleck. OK not really. Actually I always thought Jude Law looks more like Matt Murdock than most other folks I can think of. That's why I am curious to see how Law does as an action star in that movie Repo Men.
By Clemontine at 9:38 PM ON 02/05/10
Love Jude Law. I could probably go for that. Has he done an American accent before?
By tb83 at 9:46 PM ON 02/05/10
I might see it as long as there is a better story and Ben Affleck and Jenny Garner are not in it. They should have gotten Jon Faveur to direct it instead of being Ben's Partner it might have been better

"David Scarpa, who has already scripted one reboot—The Day The Earth Stood Still".
Actually, that was a *remake*, not a reboot.
The Director's Cut of Daredevil is very good. I wish they would've put that one out in the theater to begin with. I wouldn't mind seeing Affleck come back--but I doubt that'll happen.
By BK at 9:49 PM ON 02/05/10
Oh HELL yeah. Daredevil is one of my fave Marvel Movie translations.
Been waiting for another one ever since.

The Director's Cut of Daredevil was very good--too bad they didn't put that out in the theater to begin with. I also thought Affleck was fine in the role--but they'll almost certainly get someone new.

He did a Canadian accent in that film Existenz. I haven't seen any of his other non-British roles.

Oop! Sorry for the double post...
By divephotog at 9:53 PM ON 02/05/10
Well, nicer to see this than to have yet another Batman or other recreation.
Bizzare may be what we are, but it's unique that we truly seek. -kh

The 2003 one is my favorite movie ever. I hope Ben and Jen come back for this one!

Matt Damon as Davedevil.

I would not mind another Daredevil movie. It wasn't great (#1), but it was watchable. I had heard that quite awhile back, there was a sketchy script or something floating around with the villians being The Kingpin (again) and Mr. Fear....
By Red Mask at 10:46 PM ON 02/05/10
I'd watch a Daredevil vs. Punisher film. But it needs a separate title that stands on its own. It needs to be plot driven while exploring the heroes own experience with the law.
By Imaginary Guy at 11:17 PM ON 02/05/10
I hope that they consider the Man Without Fear limited series from the mid '90s for a script source. It was very well written by Frank Miller, character driven, and told every important turning point of Matt Murdock's life that led him to becoming Daredevil. According to the forward in the book, it was originally intended to be a movie spec script before Miller turned it into a comic.
Also, please please please no wire work, no CGI stunts, keep it down to earth. This is a story about a guy who can know his surroundings with such accuracy and precision that he can fight bullets with a stick...but he can't leap a city block, he doesn't have all the neato toys and armor, and if he gets hurt he _stays_ hurt. Affleck's billy clubs were a great example of what was wrong with the 2003 movie-I know mechanical engineers and machinists who have been working in their industry for decades who couldn't make real devices like that, certainly not ones that could be light enough to carry on your hip or that would stand up to being used as weapons, nor that a lawyer who represented the destitute and downtrodden could afford. Look at movies like Kiss of the Dragon, the Bourne series, Taken, etc for the kind of realism that can really show off Daredevil as a character and not a cliche.
By Gaijin at 11:20 PM ON 02/05/10
I'm going to be honest and say that I really didn't have that much of a problem with the Daredevil film. In fact, I rather liked it. It's definitely one of the better Marvel Comics movies to be put out (especially when compared to the mid-80's Dolph Lundgren "Punisher" or the "Electra" spin-off). I wouldn't even mind a sequel that was better made. But, if we are doing a complete reboot, I'd encourage they go back the story out of the comics, tweek it only a bit, and take more direction from the story arcs by Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, and Michael Bendis. If I had my way, I'd make it more of a "Marvel Knights" movie, involving a three to four of the street-level Marvel heroes that grudgingly work together to face a superior foe(s).
By mykl at 11:37 PM ON 02/05/10
@Clemontine: I think he does one in ‘A.I.’, perhaps ‘Road to Perdition’… I am pretty sure “The Talented Mister Ripley’ has Law with no accent since he has to be an American.
I thought the first one was not that bad, I need to watch the Director's Cut I hear good things about it. Ben was OK but I thought they could have done better for DD. I would love to see Law do it or even try to get Cillan Murphy. If anything they need to make it a hard R rated version. I just don't know who they could get for a director. Kevin Smith would be a good choice due to his love for DD but he is a pretty simple director though, perhaps they should try to get someone who has experience with Noir like flicks, that may be the best avenue.
By Konn at 11:40 PM ON 02/05/10
I really enjoyed the Affleck DD. One of the only Affleck movies I liked him in. I am worried tho because the David Scarpa "Day" stunk. I love the idea of DD and Punisher teaming up against Kingpin. That could be a great movie.
By jpd3 at 11:55 PM ON 02/05/10
I have to admit I don't actually hate his movie.
Truth is I love DD so I've got no problem with another movie. I actually thing Daredevil would make a great TV series. Lawyer by day......vigilante by night............
By Gozer at 12:53 AM ON 02/06/10
Red Mask: "I'd watch a Daredevil vs. Punisher film."
Oh, yeah, that is a great idea! I'd totally watch that! Hopefully, they'd do well casting it. Maybe Ghost Rider could show up in a DVP sequel?
DD is one of my all-time favorite superheroes, so I'd love another movie.
BTW, great bod on Garner in the pic above!
By supercricket63 at 1:36 AM ON 02/06/10
DareDevil, if done better, would be welcome. I thought that the Affleck version was too campy, not serious like the character (imho) should be portrayed. Also, keep him more down to earth with gadgets to a minimum. He learned from Stick how to handle himself--let us see what he learned.
By UnRiel at 2:39 AM ON 02/06/10
I'd love to see Daredevil performed by a parcour artist, take the action up a notch and really make it realistic as a human throwing himself across the cityscape. Surely there's one out there that can act. Affleck was not bad, but Farrell overdid Bullseye.
I second the Daredevil vs Punisher idea
By cyfygal at 2:46 AM ON 02/06/10
I liked Daredevil. I'm not a huge fan of the Marvel adaptations, so I wasn't expecting much when I went into it, but I thought it was pretty good. I liked Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner in this movie (although I thought the Electra sequel was pretty bad, which is a shame, because I was looking forward to it after Daredevil). I'd love to see a Daredevil sequel. I just hope it's NOT in 3D.
By Norbi at 2:58 AM ON 02/06/10
Another reboot ? Come on :P
The Director's Cut of Daredevil is great, the cinema version was waay worse.
By aerynsboy at 4:38 AM ON 02/06/10
Am I up for another Daredevil movie? That's like asking if I'm up for a root canal!
By REDante at 6:25 AM ON 02/06/10
It has potential to be redeemed, but Im in no mood to see another cardboard choegraphed kung fu scene in the childrens park all for a name, Im in no mood to see a 70's porno reject looking bullseye, and im definitely in no mood for PG-13. If you want to make it more realistic, you gotta include the the drugs and the violence. You lready failed once, both Daredevil and Electra. Just like Punisher: Warzone, if its going to be an up hill battle to get any glory, you might as well go R rated, that way theres a chance you could succeed, or theres a chance where you could go out with a little decency. Thats how I felt with Punisher: Warzone, it went down, but it went down bloody.
By zsingerb at 9:46 AM ON 02/06/10
You mean the guy who ruined The Day the Earth Stood Still (Interstellar Eco Terrorism instead of Fear of each other) is going to ruin DD? Count me out.
By SonicRush at 10:38 AM ON 02/06/10
Maybe if MATT DAMON was DareDevil I'd consider it!
By ZeroEffect at 10:45 AM ON 02/06/10
I don't think it was an Affleck Problem more then a Mark Steven Johnson Problem, he is a comic book nerd but has proved himself inept with daredevil and ghost rider and anything else marvel is stupid enough to let him touch. but yes the formula seems to be simple find a good director/writer lead and supporting and all should go much better this time...
By SgtMug at 12:24 PM ON 02/06/10
I liked the movie, when they gave you the view of what Daredevil see's, I thought it added to the movie. I would go see a sequel. THe remake of "The Day the Earth" stood still wasn't good, they should have passed on the whole enviromental issue and kept the same premise as the original.
By hermy at 3:51 PM ON 02/06/10
We'll you knew it was only a matter of time.Like most of the others have said the director's cut was much better. But over all it was ok.I thought the Kingpin was kind of weak. And you know in a few years they will try another punisher.Maybe be he could be the bad guy in a new Daredevil movie
By Bamaboy at 4:12 PM ON 02/06/10
I'm there. One of my favorite comics as a kid. A darker version would be great.
By ah394496 at 4:31 PM ON 02/06/10
The original film really wasn't that bad... I think I'd be up more for a sequel than a reboot, but it would be a rental for me.
By M at 5:33 PM ON 02/06/10
"David Scarpa, who has already scripted one reboot—The Day The Earth Stood Still" Do people honestly think this so called "reboot" (god I'm sick of that word) was good? They should have simply stuck with a true remake, left the story alone. I didn't think the first DD was a bad movie.
By Cyrus at 6:04 PM ON 02/06/10
first of all, in my opinion, Daredevil is the best Marvel superhero—PERIOD!!! but that movie was wracked with problems, starting with Mark Steven Johnson. not only did he do a horrible job with the directing (the acting was abysmal), but the story made me ashamed of my love for comics—i felt like i owed everyone around me an explanation. everything that was right about Frank Miller’s original story was taken to an opposite extreme of ass sucking! Miller’s books are all about character driven stories. Johnson’s movie was all action with no regard for the characters except for the dazzlement of martial arts displays. NOTHING made any sense. Marvel might as well have made the entire movie as men in costumes hitting one another—in fact, that’s all Daredevil the film was. not to mention that my lazy, and blind-in-one-eye cat could have done a better job with the casting. what a let down. a terrible, terrible let down, (and don’t even get me started on how bad Johnson’s Ghost Rider was).
bottom line is, Daredevil needs to remain a great character driven story. we’ll care about the film when the creators take the characters seriously and bring the audience into their psyche. this doesn’t mean that it has to be an entirely cerebral type of film, but go back to the great Daredevil runs (such as Miller’s Born Again, or Bendis’ run where Daredevil proclaims himself the new Kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen) and rediscover that Matt Murdock kicking ass is so much sweeter when we actually care why he’s doing it in the first place, (much like the new Batman movies). put some real care into the characters, story and movie. stop producing campy crap that nobody likes, staring BS actors and run by idiot directors that make sub-moronic ass-clowns like McG look like a frakking visionary.

So you have no problem with an unknown radioactive goo blinding someone and giving them super-powered radar abilities. The same guy who has a girlfriend that happens to be a ninja. And a guy who can kill you from a block away with a playing card and a toothpick... It's just that his billy-clubs are unrealistic. Ok...
Mutants, Adamantium bonded skeletons, Walking on walls, Last son of Krypton... all good... but those darn billy clubs !!!!
By patches1964 at 7:56 PM ON 02/06/10
Jackie chan is too old for Matt Murdock. Leave electra out of the picture and bring Black Widow in it his Love before Electra.
By shadow at 10:00 PM ON 02/06/10
I say Simon Baker from The Mentalist should play Daredevil.
By Imaginary Guy at 10:00 PM ON 02/06/10
Actually, I said that the billy clubs were a "great example" of what was wrong with the first movie, never that they were the only thing poorly done. The clubs looked like something out of a James Bond movie instead of the kind of weapon that Matt Murdock could have actually made for himself. They were too flashy and complicated, just like many other elements of the movie. Yes, I've seen the director's cut, and yes, it was better, but even measuring it by that version the first Daredevil movie was not what it should have been, and I'm glad that the character is going to get a second shot at having a good movie.
This story is about a blind man who can "see" the world better than any sighted person, and who chooses to make the slightly insane decision to be a hero. His heightened senses are the only real advantage Matt Murdock has, and they're a given for the character-without them, you've got no story. But that's where the remarkable should end-the rest should be as grounded and real as possible. Writers like Miller and others have been making it work in the books for a while now (I point again to The Man Without Fear limited series, which won a Comic Buyer's Guide award). Is it too much to ask that the movie does the same thing without trying to dazzle us with flash and special effects?
By ryan23 at 10:45 PM ON 02/06/10
As long as Coolio is back, it'll be amazing.
By shikari23 at 11:42 PM ON 02/06/10
The Director's Cut is FAR superior to the theatrical release. They cut out an entire storyline which tied the plot together much better, and make the movie much more cohesive (in my opinion).
By P for Patel at 1:57 AM ON 02/07/10
YES....... if any movie deserved a reboot, it was this one. I love Daredevil. I liked the tone of the movie, but apart from that it was all bad.............. Affleck sucked, Farrell was a joke............ New director, new cast.........cool.......

Boring. But if we must then please no Ben Affleck!!!
Can we get another Elektra one instead.
By MCP-001 at 8:53 AM ON 02/07/10
What do I think?
I think that they should go the route of the 1994 version of The Fantastic Four: film it, can it, forget it.
By amyfresh at 9:01 AM ON 02/07/10
Sam Worthington as Daredevil....
By Maddkelt at 10:19 AM ON 02/07/10
I'm still wondering why they don't go the obvious route of getting Kevin Smith to write the script. Hey saved the comic from oblivion, maybe he can do the same for the movie franchise.
By Misfit1981 at 4:15 PM ON 02/07/10
I would like to see another Daredevil film...so long as it doesn't suck like that last one. NO BEN AFFLECK...NO JENNIFER GARNER!!! Use a no name actor or something. If you are going to pick villains don't use Bullseye for awhile. Ferrell stab at the character still makes my head hurt.
Oh, NO NICK CAGE EITHER! He messed up Ghost Rider so bad. That's my favorite character.
While we are at it lets get another Punisher movie out. Ray Stevenson was awesome as Frank Castle. I don't think people supported it enough because everyone still remembered Tom Janes whimpering performance. The Punisher crying...NO! Suicidal? Well sure in the sense of, I am going to kill every single last bad guy or die trying kind of way. What do you all think?
By Celesto at 4:54 PM ON 02/07/10
spiderman has open ends, daredevil did not have one! daredevil is one of the unnecessary movies. too much comic picurization!

I know it's popular to bad mouth the 2003 Dare Devil and Ben Affleck in general, but really enjoyed that movie. If they did a reboot of the franchise, I would only hope that they made it was good as Affleck's. But given how lame the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still was (the original was vastly better, barring the 50-year gap in special effects), I'm a bit leery of what David Scarpa will put together, especially given the time constraints he's under. Maybe he'll surprise me, and I hope he does, but my expectations are guardedly low for the re-boot.
By Taiso at 10:52 AM ON 02/08/10
No, I don't need another Daredevil movie.
Right now.
Let the rights revert back.
Let ALL the rights revert back to Marvel.
Get the IPs under the same creative umbrella.
Like it's supposed to be.
THEN, and ONLY THEN, should they make another movie.
I have spoken. Let it be done.
By KrazyJoe at 11:56 AM ON 02/08/10
Enough with the reboots already! Just make a sequel! Daredevil is still one of the best Marvel movies ever made, on a par with the original Spider-Man. Just make a frakkin sequel.

I would like another movie, with a better cast for one thing Ben Affleck, was the wrong one to cast out of the Good Will Hunting duo, it should have been Mat Damon. Case in point Damon is a better actor, in the Born movies he showed he has the moves, and if you ever read the comic books or graphic novels he even looks like Mat Murdock and has the same frist name. Forget Jude Law, who does not look even close to Mat Murdock.
