That new Dune director sure gets around! Last week, we shared an interview in which Pierre Morel told how he loved the novel as a teenager, read it at least 10 times and intended his film to be faithful to the book. But now he's spilling even more details about his plans—and those plans could include 3-D!
In an interview with our friends over at IGN, the director of Taken and From Paris With Love talked about how he was intimidated by the project, and that he had to "erase the image that David Lynch did" in order to proceed. But he also said that—
"I'd love it to be 3D, of course. It's the kind of movie that has the scope to be 3D. Will they do it in 3D? I'd push for that, but I don't know. As a viewer, I've just been watching Avatar with my kids twice in the theater already and had a blast. It's an amazing experience."
So what do you think? Would a 3-D take add to a new cinematic Dune? Or would it just be a distraction?

Well 3D is just a gimick, but if they do do it I hope they do it in 4D - 3D AND a good story.

Like.. CGI 3D or avatar 3D?
By KC at 8:58 PM ON 02/04/10
How about No-D? That'd be even better.
By rabidk at 8:58 PM ON 02/04/10
Gimmick aside, you gotta admit the worm-rider sequence would be damn cool in 3d...

Is it not being 3D even a possibility at this point?
By allison&jack at 9:45 PM ON 02/04/10
After seeing Avatar in 3D, I simply will never go watch another 2D movie at the theater again.
3D for Dune is enough to get me interested, but there is still the bigger issue of how crappy Dune has been treated by Hollywood for decades now.
The 3D will get me to pay attention, but the trailers still have to sell me on it.

Like Roger Ebert said: "If a movie can't stand as 2D in a theatre, it is still not a movie when viewed in 3D."
If people are going just to see the 3D, then it isnothing more than a graphics show, and lets get big computers to throw up 3D scenes randomly for those thrill seekers.... -kh

That is true about what Ebert said, I didn't say I would go simply because it's in 3D though, I just said I won't go unless it's in 3D. It still has to look like a good movie for me to be interested.
Avatar was the first, and last 3D movie I'll go to simply because it was 3D. The movie wasn't that great, but the 3D effect sold me on going back to the theater again (something I've lost interest in over the last decade).

Can we please just assume that every big-budget, CGI-infused, action/fantasy/adventure movie scheduled to be released in the next two years will likely be in 3D?
It would save an awful lot of time.

You've just limited yourself. I don't expect to see a ton of 3D out there

I'm getting tot he point where I really hope the next 20 3D films tank at the box office so Hollywood Suits stop thinking that 3D = Money regardless of quality.
By HiddenVorlon at 7:36 AM ON 02/05/10
No no no no no.
While Dune has some action sequences, it is not meant to be a shoot 'em 3D action film. Dune is a cerebral epic. It should not be reduced to Star Wars (which rips of many elements from Dune).
The SyFy Channel's adaptation, was actually OK. Dune cannot be told in a 2 or 3 hour movie, so they shouldn't even try.

1. 3D would look great when the worm is shown in the movie.
2. I hope Morel makes DUNE into at least 2 movies, because every time he talks about DUNE he mentions only one film.
3. 3D films will most likely die off just as it did decades ago, but that doesn't mean people can't try to enjoy them.
4. I hope Morel considers using the same technology used on AVATAR, because whether anyone likes it or not, the technology used in that film is the new standard.
Now how about we start talking about actors?Patrick Stewart as Thufir Hawat, David Tennant as Piter, Max Von Sydow as the voice of Uliet Kynes, Gerard Butler as Leto Atreides, Angelina Jolie as Lady Jessica, Christian Bale or Eric Bana as Duncan Idaho, Edward James Olmos or Ian McShane as Stilgar or Emperor Shaddam IV, and short 18-year-old actors who look like they can be short 15-year-olds Paul(Black hair, pale complexion, and green eyes) and Chani(Red hair, no idea of what her complexion was, and blue within blue eyes can be taken care of by special effects). Anymore suggestions?

Am I the only one who doesn't like movies in 3D? I think its distraction, gimmicky, and it kinda makes me sick (like physically kind woosey). I just want it to be good!
By hemy at 12:42 PM ON 02/05/10
You said it @megan.some people get motion sickness very easily and those 3-D glasses don't fit very well over regular glasses.I have mixed feeling about it.I loved the book.but don't know about another movie attempt. The syfy channel one was ok.but the dessert looked like a set in a warehouse.at least Lynch made you feel like you were there on Arrakis and he did it in 2-D

Limited myself to what exactly? Watching movies on Blu-Ray at home? Something I've grown more accustom to over the last few years, vs something I've simply gotten sick of (going to the theater and having idiots on all sides blathering on during the entire film, with their cell phones ringing and txt messages lighting up the theater).
There hasn't been a decent reason to goto the movie theater in years.
Gimmick or not, it's a reason to finally go back to the theater. Also, gimmicks aren't inherently bad, it's all in how they are presented. People just try to associate a negative connotation to them because it serves their purpose to downplay something they personally don't like.

I'm starting to re-read the Dune series now, and I am excited to see a new Theatrical release of it. The Sci-Fi Mini Series was MUCH better than the first theatrical. The extended version of the first is much better, but they did butcher it up IMHO. If it's truly redone, My opinion is they should treat it much like Jackson did with LOTR, i.e. mixing various peices from many of the books yet keeping true to the primary peices of the story.
By Ejonlee at 5:48 PM ON 02/06/10
After reading all the books, and watching all the movies to date, the only way that the movie could be portrayed is as either a "longer" movie or done as a two to three parter.
It wouldn't take much to film more than one at at time, that is how they did the first two original Suerman movies.
And in the manner of actors, why have big name actors? Sure, they would draw people in just from name recognition alone. But they should not be the only reason that people should watch the movie(s).
By asdioby at 6:50 AM ON 02/07/10
Dune just doesn't film well. Maybe if they did something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes and give it a loooooooooooooong span to actually tell the story it could work. SciFi and Lynch both completely buried the "They have tried to take the life of my son" scene.
The time constraints of a movie or even a mini-series just doesn't allow for the characterization that's in the Frank Herbert books.
By MothershouldIbuildthewall at 2:47 PM ON 02/07/10
If Hollywood can co-op novels like Flash Forward for TV series, then there's no reason they couldn't do the same for Dune.
The movie format sucks compared to the TV series format anyway. They can tell far more interesting and deep stories with more vividly drawn characters than Movies ever dreamed of.
Movies are good for having a reason to go eat pop corn, but they'll never be able to compete with novels or a good television series in story telling. Don't know why they even bother trying with stuff like Dune.
In all reality, they are a step above video game storytelling, which is the lowest (ghetto) form of storytelling there is.

I wonder at what point we'll stop creating news headlines about which movie will be in 2D and which will be in 3D? Maybe when they invent holographic films....
By SethSJ at 10:40 AM ON 02/08/10
I do not agree with making DUNE a television series. It will most likely be canceled very fast or end after one season. Maybe if it was on HBO, Starz, or Showtime it would last longer, but I still don't think it will work.
