I don't know how Christopher Nolan is supposed to be able to do both the Batman and Superman franchises simultaneously. Unless he's planning on doing a Justice League movie, one of the two is going to suffer.
By Captain Celluloid at 6:07 PM ON 02/09/10
Nolan PRODUCES somebody else DIRECTS.
Not perfect but better than before.
By hermy at 6:11 PM ON 02/09/10
YES,YES,YES.Brian Singer tried. But made a boring superman movie.Like Kevin Smith said he turned superman into a winny little emo bitch. And i hope we get a diffrent villian than Lex Luther again and again.
By Hmm at 6:19 PM ON 02/09/10
Nolan's Batman doesn't really work in a world that has a Superman. Trying to out him in a Justice League movie would be a bad idea.
By classy at 6:36 PM ON 02/09/10
singers superman was good, he just chose the wrong villian, i really dont care about lex luthor.. he had the perfect superman brandon roth..
in the end he fought a rock.. lame, but when he was saving the city the effects were amazing..
let singer do it again wiht a different villain
By skyhawk at 6:38 PM ON 02/09/10
Yes! And Geoff Johns should write the script, Jon Favreau directs.
By Ratfan at 6:42 PM ON 02/09/10
Superman Begins? Bring it on!!! I'd love to see a "real-world" kinda Superman.
By vano75 at 6:42 PM ON 02/09/10
get rid of singer and routh!!! keep nolan and get someone new to be supes.
By SethSJ at 7:14 PM ON 02/09/10
It would be great to see Metropolis before Superman makes his presence known to the world: violent crimes, criminal infestation, corruption. The only place worse is Gotham!! Then: It's a bird! It's a plane! It's SUPERMAN!!
By Bill from MN at 7:16 PM ON 02/09/10
There was a lot of problems with Singer's Superman. First it was an homage to the Reeves movies, mistake IMO. It needed to be a reboot. Second, Luthor is a bumbling idiot (he needed to be the Ruthless Corporate leader), and third, Lois looked like she was 20 in this movie. What? Did she start working for the DP when she was 10?
Nolan's smart enough to know that this is not a gritty dark setting. Superman is about hope and the movie needs to reflect that.
By jgsugden at 7:17 PM ON 02/09/10
Superman is too powerful to be challenged by any realistic foe. Note that the best 2 super movies of recent days have been about characters that were basically normal guys that did the extraordinary and were incredibly smart (Batman and Iron Man). If you're going to be faithful to the Superman character you need a fantastic (as in fantasy) story. That requires something different than the Dark Knight treatment.
I don't think they should make SUperman movies, but he'd be fine to include in a Justice League movie. If you must make a Superman movie, you need a near omnipotent foe like Braniac or Apocalypse.
By SciFiFan at 7:17 PM ON 02/09/10
I agree! Chris Nolan seems to know how to bring a comic superhero to life. Whoever directs the next Superman should use Nolan as a Consultant!
I agree, Brandon Roth was a fantastic choice for Superman. Whoever came up with the lame story for Superman Returns should be the one blamed for what we got. Bring Brandon Roth back. I don't mind Lex Luthor being in the movie, but bring in a new villain. Bring in Zod or even better yet, bring in Brainiac.
By Superman at 7:18 PM ON 02/09/10
As long as the story does not contain or pertain to Lex Luthor, I am all for it. Lex Luthor is getting old.
By buttrd at 7:29 PM ON 02/09/10
Just don't do it in "4-D"!
By Haze at 7:41 PM ON 02/09/10
This is so DC. "we have on movie franchise that is working, so lets have him direct all our movies" SO, SO, SAD.
By Don-DARK at 7:57 PM ON 02/09/10
I think its great. Just bring on some real villians that push Superman. Like DarkSide, or Apocolypse. And film it right I got this scene in my head where sup's eyes are glowing red. You don't know its him till he floats out of the shadows into the light to stomp some thugs during a mugging. Come on Hollywood. Step up.
By Cerender at 8:00 PM ON 02/09/10
I don't think Superman works with a weird creepy voice...
By officer_bull at 8:38 PM ON 02/09/10
Would be great to have a new Superman movie. One that isn't boreing though. I liked that Superman Returns kept with the old music and stuff. Thought that was cool. We miss you Chris! Maybe try the guy that plays Clark in Smallville. I think he's an excellent choice for Superman. Besides I hate seeing all different actors play the same character, exp. the old Batman movies.
By Goldilocks at 8:53 PM ON 02/09/10
Superman and Batman are both boring and over-used. let's see a big-=budget extravganza team-up of Dr. Fate (Kent Nelson) and Hourman (Rex Tyler) against a bunch of super-baddies! Or how about Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and The Flash (Barry Allen) against a super-villain cartel?! Or how about the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents agaist an array of super-villains and evil spies? Dynamo, Noman, Menthor, Lightning, the Thunder Squad...now there were some characters with great potential from the more obscure comics of the 60s. Against the Iron Maiden's minions? Bring it on!!
By Superman at 9:09 PM ON 02/09/10
How about doing The Dark Knight Returns story arc where Superman and Batman are put against each other and have the brutal battle where Superman nearly kills Batman.
By kryptoniteman at 9:33 PM ON 02/09/10
as long as he does two things: 1) NO ORIGIN STORY!!! they've been done to death, just bring on the fracas
2)keep the tone of the film in line with the character, i.e. lose the sense of gritty realism; keep the sense of wonder and hope yet maintain a sense of plausible fantasy without trying to outright replicate the Donnerverse. Donner's SUPERMAN is my favorite movie of all time, but we need to move on to something new. IT'S TIME TO BRING ON DARKSEID!!!
By ah394496 at 9:34 PM ON 02/09/10
I agree with an earlier poster... Superman Returns was good, it just had a weak villain. SUPERman needs to beat around a SUPERvillain. Lex could be a good secondary villain, but a motion picture needs someone bigger. I am optimistic.
By Morals at 10:57 PM ON 02/09/10
How about Doomsday, that could be the opening fight scene, then when he is brought back, but with no powers.
By Screenwriter72 at 10:59 PM ON 02/09/10
A darker cooler "Superman-The Movie," makes sense in a chaotic world! Bring it on, just be sure to enlist a great actor like Brando to play Jor-El... That's all I ask!
By witherstaff at 11:15 PM ON 02/09/10
Superman returns was good? How does anyone who liked it forget about superman Jr? First time he kicked as a baby and Lois would be ripped to shreds. (Niven did a nice list about superman being a father, fun stuff) I'd expect that sort of lame twist from a M Night movie, not from a superman title.
By ClubMixxer31 at 11:36 PM ON 02/09/10
If his involvement increases the likelihood of crossovers between Gotham City and Metropolis or a Justice League film, I approve with some reservation.
However they got to go balls to the wall with a villain for Superman. Lex can be behind the scenes (maybe running for office) but it's time for Darkseid or Brainiac since Smallville already used Zod & Doomsday.
By mcspoo at 11:38 PM ON 02/09/10
Why not just adapt it into the timeline of Smallville? That's better Superman than the last poor emo bitch excuse for Superman...
By jedidoh at 11:45 PM ON 02/09/10
@ClubMixxer31
Smallville has used Braniac, also. He was played by James Marsters.
By shadow at 12:18 AM ON 02/10/10
Can you guys imagine Superman telling a goon,” Swear to me!"
By shockologist at 3:04 AM ON 02/10/10
I think some one said above...scrap current superman,,,,,,DC work their issues out with WB and let Tom Welling end the show in the cape and take it to the big screen. We have invested a decade nearly for smallville. Anything less than seeing thjs guy in tights and flying is an insult imo.
By doomsday at 4:06 AM ON 02/10/10
I liked the last superman movie. It was ok but not great. The ending of that movie was lame and long list credits running in the beginning was annoying. Who cares about credits, cut to the chase already!
I think it's time for a new superman movie already. I wonder why they didn't do it already with all the other comic book movies being developed. Superman was the first of the kind to be successful at a such a genre.
Times have changed and he new movie should be about that as well. Don't take me wrong but nobody reads a newspaper anymore. Would you pay a dollar for a newspaper when you get the same info on the internet for almost free? Give him another day-job. Or do something like in Superman II, or better yet bring in the villain to be Doomsday (It's suppose to be the guy killed Superman in the comic books). Other than that make it a "R" rated movie. Change the costume also. It's kind of freaky to watch a guy wear a red underwear over his tights. Wolverine did four great money making movies and he's never shown wearing a black underwear over yellow tights, that would just be fcking disturbing! Take tips from the guy who did the xmen movies, oh wait, nevermind. Listen, just do a movie that is entertaining like The Dark Knight but not like Superman III where Superman has lost his mind. NUFF SAID!
By dakalmog at 5:14 AM ON 02/10/10
Bryan Singer poured so much love into Superman Returns, but unfortunately he forgot to tell a compelling story. Also, in that film Supes himself seemed to be off character. I mean, if he knew Lois had a kid and a new man, the Superman I know would have done the honourable thing and stayed the hell away instead of pursuing her. It felt wrong.
Nolan is a great storyteller with an excellent feel for character and his influence should only be a positive for this franchise, I would hope.
By Muldfeld at 6:21 AM ON 02/10/10
Nolan is a great choice, but I'd prefer that Ronald D. Moore get a crack at it. He's a much better storyteller and even more thought-provoking, though he'd have to write the bloody thing and not just produce because then it would suck.
By fanboi at 6:45 AM ON 02/10/10

By rodee at 6:55 AM ON 02/10/10
Why not. I say let's see what he can do. He is a proven success. Maybe he can bring some new life to the "Man of Steel".
By Big Bob at 7:32 AM ON 02/10/10
It better be a Superman close to Christopher Reeve's portrayal, but with less cheese. And I have to agree with the comment about the origin story, but I would start it with just before the world knows about him. He sees something happening in the world that needs immediate attention and he makes himself known before he thought he was ready to reveal himself.
Start it off on a serious note, bring in a little humor in small bits at first, go serious again for a short while, then load up on the action. No love story for Superman's part, just let the gals get all GAGA over him, with someone special he notices toward the end.
That's how I would do it.
By Farview at 8:49 AM ON 02/10/10
The Superman Returns movie was HORRIBLE. Brandon Routh was OK as Superman, but everybody else was miscast and the story was the pits. Please, please, please break away from the 1970's movies and the crystal technology and all that garbage. I don't want a new origin story, but I don't want the same vision of Krypton that was in the 1970s movies. I agree that having a more fantasy-based, high stakes villain such as Darkseid would probably be best.
By ratticus58 at 8:50 AM ON 02/10/10
Let's utterly homogenized every classic superhero, put them in black of course;because we must be DARK, either a trenchcoat, biker's leathers or a rubber suit that makes him look like a steel-belted radial tire with a cape and have him mumble like he's been chain-smoking Marlboros all day.
Another example of the studio money-machine that says the hell with 40 or 50 years of comic book mythology, F-K the fans, and lets let the "name' director completely re-imagine the character. The bottom line is people want to see these creations come to life on the big screen, despite various director's "i'm not a comic fan" statements. So whether Nolan is helming Superman in any capacity we know where this is going.
By Kes at 9:13 AM ON 02/10/10
I liked Brian Singer's Superman. But the whole son bit was crap. And so was Lois Lane. I'd see a reboot. Maybe something darker. By dark I mean a darker movie, i want Superman to remain the same. Wouldnt mind if they keep Rooth (sp) has Superman.
By lookn_4_stars at 9:27 AM ON 02/10/10
Mere words cannot express how bad "Returns" was. Suffice it to say Nolan will do alot better job than Singer no matter what kind of story he writes. As long as nothing from Returns gets translated into the next chapter it will be better.
By radiodaze at 9:43 AM ON 02/10/10
I think the idea of Nolan guiding the next Superman project is a good one. Of course, we all thought Singer was a good choice too, so what do we know? Superman Returns was nothing more than a worn-out remake of the first two Superman films and that's not what anyone wanted or expected. I agree, we need to move on from Luthor as the villain and bring in somebody bigger in the raw power department. Darkseid would be good and I would LOVE to see the Doomsday storyline done right (I love Smallville, but they screwed Doomsday up royally!). And as nice as it might be to see Smallville carried over into some sort of Superman story with Tom Welling in the cape, I don't think it will ever happen. From what I've always heard Welling is terrified of being to closely associated with Superman and wants nothing to do with the cape or the tights. I think a really strong action story featuring a great villain that examines some real world consequences for having the kind of power Superman has would be a lot of fun. And I agree...NO new origin story! We all know where Supes came from and we don't need the story told again...
By Tom B at 9:57 AM ON 02/10/10
While a reboot of the Superman franchise might be good, why not take a different approach to the whole story. Why not make a classic, big budget sci-fi disaster flick to end all disaster flicks. Think I'm crazy? Perhaps. Consider this, however, and picture it on the big screen.
Krypton!
What if you knew the date the world would end?
The Scientist: Faced with an impossible deadline, if he wants to save any of his people, he may have to make a deal with the devil himself: an alien collector by the name of Brainiac.
The Wife: In the end, she'll be left with a terrible choice: allow her newborn son to die along with everyone else, or do something unforgiveable.
The Estranged Brother: He has enough to deal with keeping his home city of Argo safe. He has no time for his crazy brother and his wild claims. When someone from the central government contacts him and asks for his help in silencing the scientist, it's an offer too good to ignore.
The General: In the scientist's claims, he sees an opportunity to seize absolute power.
The Politician: Faced with budget shortfalls, an economic meltdown and rampant crime, he sees the scientist's wild claims as a threat to the future of himself and his political party. He will do whatever it takes to suppress the man and those claims.
The Child: In his tiny hands lies the salvation of a people -- just not his own.

If you are wondering about Nolan's possible involvement with the third chapter of Batman, the link above provides a possible answer. Nothing has been set into stone; thus, there has been no official word on a possible third movie.
When it comes to Nolan working on Superman -- Unless he has something very-very new to show, I think the Superman franchise is kind of dead.
By UPNetwork. at 11:07 AM ON 02/10/10
I think Nolan does a great job on the projects he works on. The Prestige was even great. But Nolan is a different kind of writer, director and producer. I think he would do a good job on a Superman movie. Just it wouldn't be what we're use to or understand.
Singer I think did a fabulous job trying to erase parts 3 and 4 of Superman. If Donner signed off on it, then it's gold. He started it all, he would know best. I liked Superman Returns for the fact they kept it storyline and didn't over use the special effects and CG.
Nolan should stay with Batman. And before anyone truly rushes to judgment, I think we should wait for Singer's next Superman movie. Hey Batman Begins rocked, but Dark Knight was the ultimate. Let's see if Singer can kill the Sophomore Jinx.
Or maybe get Shumacher, he can kill a franchise quick. Lol.

Compared to that mess they released some years ago, I'm glad to hear someone with some sense will bring us a great movie. Thank heavens!!!
By JRR at 11:42 AM ON 02/10/10
Am I the only one who thinks that TDK was the perfect set-up for the Man of Steel version of how Supes and Batman met? In that version Batman was an outlaw and Superman tried to arrest/capture him. He came to see that Gotham needs a different kind of hero.. from there they could join to deal with a common foe
By 13th Cylon at 12:54 PM ON 02/10/10
Many of you have hit it right on the head, IMO. Let’s not reboot to the beginning, lets start at the end... The Big Blue Boy Scout Vs. Doomsday. Let's kill Superman!
Open the door for Darkside et. al. to take over the earth. Let's do something we have never seen before in a Superman movie, Lets let evil win... for the moment anyway. Let's see the world fall apart without their hero. Then let’s end at the beginning, with Superman coming back from the dead.
How about it Mr. Nolan? Can you make us excited about a very clichéd and very tired franchise? Can you rev up the fans to embrace a new Superman? I would pay most any admission ticket price you want me to pay to see this.
Personally, I don't think it can be done. DC is just too protective about Superman. I don't think they will ever let “Superman: A Movie”, get as dark as the Dark Knight. Personally, I think Nolan will run into similar situation as Rami/Marvel faced with Spiderman 4. The producer want to go one way and the money wants to go another. I will remain hopeful for a good result, but not optimistic.
By Jpnoir at 2:55 PM ON 02/10/10
i don't buy this news. Nolan is a Noir type director and is more into character driven stories, Superman is too perfect and not much to grow with his character beside being in love with Lois. Just a jock that flies and lift heavy stuff. Get old really fast, no matter how many reboot Superman get.
By conanfan34 at 2:58 PM ON 02/10/10
I think nolan would do an awsome superman movie this movie needs a major reboot and lots of action. They need to go in the direction of the new Hulk.I think Chris Nolan would also do an awsome Tomb Raider reboot think about She goes all over the world just like batman and the way he does the high up sequences when batman is on top of the building and looks like an ant his Tomb Raider would be awesome. He also knows how to take classics and pay tribute to them but modernize them.I think Superman would be a great film for him.But i think he fits Tomb Raider more.

I don't know, because everybody got all exited when they found out that Brian Singer was directing Superman Returns and it wasn't the blockbuster everybody was hoping it would be. I didn't think it was a bad movie; I just didn't think it was great. Therefore, I'm not overly exited about Nolan's involvement in the Superman franchise. Honestly I wish they could just find a beefier actor. They don't have to be as big as Arnold, but after decades of average looking "Supermen" I think we deserve more.
I've never been completely satisfied with any of the Superman movies; while I've been mostly entertained there was always that one element that kept me from being . . . fulfilled.

Singer is one of the worst directors ever. If an airtight quality script doesn’t land in his lap, he hackneys the project. Please don’t rebut by listing anything good he's done, cause if you take an honest look at those movies. They succeed because they have brilliant actors who don’t need to be directed. And if not for their performance, most of those films lacked serious substance. As for Nolan, has he done anything that isn’t dark and edgy? Super man is not dark like batman. Finally I like Roth, but not as superman. Hopefully they find someone similar to Reeves
